Limit System Interconnects to Maintain Digital Signal Integrity
Maintaining signal integrity is crucial to any AV System design whether it is analog,
digital, or a combination of both . Digital signals are susceptible to degradation
from any number of factors; including system interconnects, such as gender
changers, placed in the signal path .
Digital signals are either on or off by nature, with virtually no middle ground . Signal
losses due to cable attenuation or multiple interconnection points within the
signal path can result in a frozen or partially frozen image, or abrupt gaps of lost
image data, and can be disruptive to image display, even disabling it completely .
Common symptoms include color sparkles, flashing and, in the worst case, a blank
screen . A digital signal can go from “good” to “gone” almost instantaneously, a
phenomenon known as “cliff effect .” The digital signal is said to have “hit the cliff,”
the threshold below which it cannot be recovered . For a more in-depth discussion

splices, joiners, or gender changers should be avoided .
Compare the two eye patterns below . Figure 1 depicts the result of a 1920x1200
DVI source signal at the end of a high-quality 12-foot (3 .6 m) cable connected
directly to the source device . Figure 2 depicts the result of the same 1920x1200
DVI source signal after passing through a high quality 6 foot (1 .8 m) DVI cable, then
through a DVI female-to-female coupler, and finally an additional 6 foot DVI cable .
This emphasizes the importance of proper design considerations for management
of all high resolution digital signals . Each point of connection within a digital
signal path introduces some degree of signal attenuation or degradation . System
interconnects should be kept to a minimum, and signal distribution equipment
should always feature signal conditioning capabilities to best accommodate
specific design challenges that may compromise digital video signal integrity .
Evaluating Digital Signal Paths
Eye patterns, the representation of a digital signal on an oscilloscope, are
used to evaluate the quality of digital signals when passed through cables or
signal extension devices, switchers, signal processors, or other electronics .
The signal becomes more and more susceptible to discontinuities along the
cable . Such discontinuities cause reflections which will degrade the signal .

of -70°C to +180°C, that is capable of testing for heat, humidity,
heat with humidity, and freezing, as required under UL60065 for

These and other accreditations allow our products to carry a minimum
of five certifications, including FCC, UL, cUL, CE, and C-Tick . Other
international standards are applied to specific product lines such as

restrictive UL Energy Efficiency, PSE (Japan), S-MARK (Argentina),
GS-MARK, (Germany), KC-MARK (Korea) certifications .
As a side benefit, having a fully certified testing facility in-house also
allows us to regularly check shipping products for quality consistency .
Products are randomly pulled from each manufacturing line and fully
tested to check for uniformity and quality of workmanship . Third-party
laboratories are used to corroborate final testing data, but the bulk of
the checks are completed in our lab . Through our initial and continuous
compliance efforts, a design is tested and evaluated repeatedly before
and after the product is released . Rigorous, random testing sustains

Decora®-style wallplates. They feature a
pass-through DVI-D, DisplayPort, VGA, or

The USB Extender Series enables USB

The Cable Cubby® 200 provides inconspicuous
access to one AC power outlet and
accommodates two single-space or one
double-space AAP Architectural Adapter
Plates and up to three data, audio, or video
cables. The Extron line of optional AAPs
allows you to customize the Cable Cubby with
almost any kind of pass-through connectivity
required. Cables can be pulled through the
openings in the adjustable panels — which
can be set up for varying cable diameters and
connector types — and then pushed back
through to be stored out of sight until needed.

Extron Cable Cubby® Power Modules are
double- or triple-space AAP-sized power
modules. They feature one or two unswitched
AC power outlets and are designed to work
with most Cable Cubby® Series and all
furniture-mountable TouchLink® touchpanels.
The US model is a double-space AAP-sized
module and features two unswitched AC
outlets with an attached 9.5' power cord.
Models for most world markets are triplespace AAP-sized modules and feature one
unswitched AC outlet with an IEC power
connector. The South Africa power module
includes a switch for compliance with local
safety regulations. Cable Cubby Power

The Extron Half Rack Shelf System of rack
shelves and related accessories is designed
for applications utilizing one-half rack width
and smaller products. The compact, 1U
half-rack width size allows the mounting of
half-, quarter-, and eighth-rack products in
space-constrained furniture such as lecterns
and cabinets that are not wide enough to
support the mounting of full width, 19” rack
shelves or electronics. The Half-Rack System
is comprised of the HRB 109 Basic Rack

The Extron AVTrac® is a low profile, floormounted raceway system that provides a

includes two double-space and two triplespace AAP Architectural Adapter Plate

single-space AAPs. The AAP 110 Enclosure
comes in four versions; no AC for AV
connectivity-only applications, or with one of

Twisted Pair Extender for USB Peripherals
The USB Extender Series enables USB
peripheral devices to be remotely located up to
450 feet (135 meters) from the host computer.
The extender consists of a transmitter and
receiver set that are linked using a single,
standard CAT 5/5e/6 or CAT 7 cable. The
receiver features a built-in, active four port
hub that supplies 5 Volts, 500 mA to each
port to power attached devices. This allows
peripherals such as smart phones, webcams,
personal media players, and mass storage
devices to be connected and powered or
charged at the same time. The USB Extender
Series is ideal for use in applications utilizing
the Extron Annotator and remote touchscreen
displays, as well as applications that require
the remote location of USB peripherals such as
interactive whiteboards, keyboards, mice, and
other human interface devices.

VGA and Audio Line Driver with EDID Minder ®
The Extron Extender Plus is a one input, one
buffered output line driver that extends VGAQXGA and HDTV component video signals up
to 250 feet (75 m) on Extron MHR Mini High
Resolution or similar cables. It also accepts
unbalanced computer stereo audio and
converts it to balanced, line level stereo audio.
A variable level/peaking control provides
equalization to compensate for signal loss and
high frequency attenuation due to long cable
runs. To simplify integration, the Extender Plus
features EDID Minder®, an Extron-exclusive
technology that automatically manages EDID
communication between devices. Available
in Decora®-style and AAP form factors, the
Extender Plus is ideal for a wide range of
applications to extend computer-video and
audio signals over long cable runs.

The CVEQ 100 AAP is a high performance
one input, one output line driver for composite

transmitter that provides active, balanced

Volume and Mute Controllers
The Extron VCM 100 AAP and VCM 100
MAAP provide remote volume and mute

Custom Engraving Services
for Architectural Adapter Plates
Extron is pleased to offer custom engraving services for MAAP - Mini
Architectural Adapter Plates, AAP - Architectural Adapter Plates, and
the CM-5BB/CM-20BB five-button and 20-button control module
AAPs. You can use the engraving to clearly indicate signal type and
to input numbers, or for any other labeling required for making signal
connections clear and easy.

Double-Space MAAP Samples
To order engraving for any of the AAPs, MAAPs, CM-5BB, or
the CM-20BB, download PDF versions of these forms from
the Extron Web site at http://www.extron.com/engraving.
Detailed instructions for completing the forms are included in the
PDF form.
Submit one Engraving Order Form for every unique plate design and
every module model ordered. If identical engraving is required on
several modules, then submit only one order form for each model
number ordered. Be sure to include a purchase order that specifically
authorizes purchase of the Extron products as well as the engraving
service charges.
