The On-Going Appleton Advantage
Appleton uses a proprietary technique to protect and seal its’ products. The finish and its’ advantages come standard on all
our coated (formerly painted) products, providing superior protection at no extra cost. Epoxy powder coat products last longer,
thus reducing callbacks, lowering total installation and operation costs.
The Advantages:
Independent Testing:
An independent laboratory tested Appleton’s Epoxy Powder Coat Finish against competitive product finishes. The test results
show that our powder-coat finish has more than twice the corrosion resistance than our previous paint finish. It also showed
that our powder-coat finish has almost three times the corrosion resistance as some of our competitions’ standard paint
finishes.
Other tests have shown the epoxy powder coating to have the following physical properties when properly applied:
Impact (ASTM D-2794): 120 in. /lbs. Direct and reverse

Standard
Listing, UL’s most widely known service, means that UL has tested and evaluated representative samples of
your product and determined that they meet UL’s requirements. These requirements are based primarily on UL’s
published Standards for Safety. (Products that bear the UL Mark for Canada have been tested and evaluated to the
appropriate Canadian standards for safety).
UL Classified: Classification
Classification means that UL has tested and evaluated representative samples of your product with respect certain
properties of the product, a limited range of hazards or suitability of use under limited or special conditions. UL
Classifies products to applicable UL requirements and Standards for Safety, as well as to the standards of other
national and international organizations such as the NFPA, ASTM, NSF, ISO and IEC.
Page 3Page 3
Interchangeable Products with an Advantage
Standard on all Appleton coated products. Unilets, lighting and many conduit fittings get the epoxy powder coating as
the final finishing step.
Improved Triple-Coat Finish for malleable iron products. Epoxy powder coating is the third step in our exclusive
Triple-Coat Finish. Malleable iron products have the combined advantages of zinc plating, chromate dip and epoxy
powder coating.
Lasts 2 to 3 times longer. When tested under corrosive conditions, Appleton’s exclusive powder-coat finish lasted 2 to
3 times longer than our competitors’ standard paint finishes.
More flexible than paint. Products are more resistant to mechanical damage since the powder-coat finish does not
crack or chip like painted surfaces.
Environmentally-safe process. Unlike conventional painting processes, the Appleton Epoxy Powder Coat Finish is
completely environmentally safe. Airborne overspray particulates are nonexistent.
Ideal for harsh and corrosive environments. This new generation finish stands up to harsh and corrosive
environments longer. It’s the ideal choice for drilling rigs, chemical plants, refineries, pulp and paper plants, and any
other demanding application.

Appleton® Powertite® Plugs and Receptacles
Freedom of Choice.
Our workhorse line, and the basis for many of our plug and receptacle product
systems, is the Powertite Series. Housings constructed of non-corrosive,
copper-free aluminum, Powertite plugs and receptacles are designed to
handle moisture, inclement weather, as well as hazardous vapor or dust. Built
for use in locations where exposure to the elements is inevitable. When certain
applications require additional safety precautions, reverse service (-RS) or
contact rotation (-P4) options are available. Paired with the proper receptacle,
the Powertite plug can create a trusted connection for a hazardous location.
All aluminum construction ensures durability in these difficult environments.
Watertight design provides protection against potential failure or shock hazard.
Interchangeable.
Powertite plugs and receptacles comply with UL Standards 1682 and 1686
and are interchangeable with other plugs and receptacles complying with
these standards.
Full-Line Choice.
Powertite receptacles are available in 30-, 60-, 100-, 200-, and 400ampere units. Two grounding styles are available: Style 1, shell ground

Appleton® U-Line® Receptacles
Freedom of Choice.
Our U-Line blade style devices build out our vast product line. The
robust plug design permits portable equipment to be used safely in both
hazardous and standard location environments. With U-Line receptacles,
you have safety in design and convenience in function. The factory
sealed switched receptacle is explosionproof and designed to keep out
moisture and dust. A simple twist of the plug produces an audible “click,”
indicating that the receptacle is energized and the plug cannot be pulled
out accidentally. A spring-loaded cap adds additional protection when the
plug is disengaged. When operating portable electrically operated devices
in wet conditions, rely on the U-Line GFCI to meet all of the UL and CSA
requirements for ground fault protection in hazardous conditions.
Interchangeable.
U-Line and Contender U-Line are both intermateable with the CrouseHinds ENP plugs of like configurations. Contender U-Line receptacles are
UL Classified to mount on Crouse-Hinds EDS boxes.
Full-Line Choice.
U-Line comes standard with an aluminum cover and malleable iron
mounting box. Iron covers and aluminum mounting boxes are also
available. Both feature “Dead Front” construction. To operate, insert the
plug and rotate. The U-line receptacle is supplied with a top hinged, spring
door which may be rotated 180° or completely removed. The plugs’ NEMA
configured brass blades exert constant pressure along the entire contact
surface and provide a superior electrical contact. The positive mechanical
cable clamps prevent strain on cables that meet or exceed UL strain relief
pull-out requirements.

of devices within the enclosure, preventing ignition of combustible
atmospheres during control operation of motors and other equipment.
Contender Push Buttons, Selector Switches and Pilot Lights are available
for circuit control and/or selection and visual assurance that an electrical
function is being performed at a remote or local location. Contender
Series Control Stations can be used in classified areas where flammable
vapors, gases or highly combustible dusts are present. They are suitable
for installation in chemical and petrochemical plants, refineries and other
process industries or where corrosive elements are present.
Interchangeable.
Contender covers are UL Listed when used on Contender Bodies and are
UL Classified to interchange with Crouse-Hinds® EDS covers and bodies.
Full-Line Choice.
Contender factory sealed control station enclosures eliminate the need for
adding sealing fittings and compound at each conduit entrance. A ground
screw is factory installed in the back box for ground continuity. Corrosionresistant stainless steel hex head captive screws secure covers to back
boxes. Dozens of possible combinations of push buttons, pilot lights and
selector switches are available.
Standard Finishes and Properties.
Contender Series Control Station housings are malleable iron with a triple
coat–(1) zinc electroplate, (2) chromate, and (3) Epoxy Powder Coat finish.

IEC Product Solutions
There are two major technical standards that govern the use of
electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres worldwide:
1- IEC/CENELEC/ATEX* (common standard following agreement in
1991 on procedures for developing standards)
Inspectable Nickel-Plated
Brass Cable Gland
EEx “e” & “d”
2- NEC** CEC*** (products approved by UL, FM, CSA...).
IEC can be considered as the “international standard” accepted in
nearly every country.
Since 1996, NEC, Article 505, permits IEC Zone style installations
in the US. This offers users a greater variety of installation and
protection methods. For more detailed information consult NEC
Article 505.
Similar changes have been adopted by the CEC.
* IEC: International Electrotechnical Commission
CENELEC: European Committee of Electrotechnical Standards
ATEX: ATmosphere EXplosibles (French: Explosive Atmospheres)
** NEC: National Electrical Code.
