Harsh environment oscillators are an integral component for instrumentation used to make measurements during the drilling process as well as data recording of logging and permanent gage tools. The MtronPTI M2052 series provides a reliable solution for extreme environmental conditions. The HCMOS/TTL compatible clock oscillators were precisely designed to operate in harsh environment conditions. The small form factor 5x7 SMT packages offer an excellent heat transfer characteristics. In order to be able to withstand the extreme conditions, parts are hermetically sealed. MtronPTI is currently working to expand the packaging options of its harsh environment products. Leaded version of the 5x7 package along with a 14-pin DIP style of packaging are under development (Please contact the factory for availability). Logging while drilling tools, which are exposed to extreme temperatures and high levels of mechanical shock and vibration require oscillators that are able to handle rugged conditions. The unique crystal mounting structure used on MtronPTI’s high reliability oscillators is capable of surviving mechanical shocks up to 1000 g’s and vibration to 20 g’s. Logging tools which are used to record well potential production information and permanent gauges used to monitor producing wells will not only be exposed to extreme shock and vibration levels but also be high temperatures for extended periods of time. To demonstrate reliability in the length of operation, the MtronPTI harsh environment oscillators have successfully completed 2000 hours of high temperature operation testing at 225 degrees centigrade. Temperature cycles observed when tools are pulled up, changed and then redeployed can fatigue components to the point of failure. To simulate this condition, the MtronPTI harsh environment oscillators have been subjected to a 1000 temperature cycles with no failures found. The M205X series provide reliable operation with stabilities of ±250 ppm over an operating temperature range of -40° to +200°C. With power consumption being a critical parameter for down-hole applications these HCMOS/ TTL compatible XOs will draw as little as 1.5 mA of input current with a 3.3 V supply. MtronPTI utilizes a human-body model (HBM) and a charged-device model (CDM) for ESD-susceptibility testing and protection design evaluation. ESD voltage thresholds are dependent on the circuit parameters used to define the mode. Although no industry-wide standard has been adopted for the CDM, a standard HBM (resistance = 1500 Ω, capacitance = 100 pF) is widely used and therefore can be used for comparison purposes. The HBM ESD threshold presented here was obtained using these circuit parameters.
