It's a case of being spoiled for choice for the wire and cable
industry, with two exhibitions/conferences to keep everyone
occupied at the start of next month.
The biennial staging of wire South America gets underway in
São Paulo, Brazil, from 6th to 8th October. Running alongside
the ever-popular Tubotech, more than 15,000 visitors
attended the show two years ago in the city that prides itself
on being the beating heart of Brazil's economy.
Our coverage of the three-day exhibition starts on page 40.
A little nearer to home, the staging of the IWCS technical
symposium. The conference is being held a month earlier
than usual, but expectations are high that a move to Atlanta,
Georgia, and the Hyatt Regency Hotel, will be a popular
move.
This is a move away from the traditional 'homes' of Providence,
Rhode Island, and Charlotte, North Carolina, but one thing
that has stayed the same is the rich content of professional
development and training courses, and technical sessions.
The symposium – and table-top exhibition – is being staged
from 5th to 8th October. Our coverage, including exhibitor
editorials, starts on page 44.

Reelex Packaging Solutions has signed
four new licensees.
According to Reelex vice president of
business development Timothy Copp, the
company has never welcomed so many
new licensees in a six-month period. Copp
attributes improvements in the global
economy and a successful education
effort, aimed at differentiating genuine
Reelex from imitators, as catalysts.
“Our ongoing anti-counterfeit campaign
is aimed at increasing recognition of
knock-off packaging versus genuine
Reelex,” says Copp. “End-users are
becoming more aware that products in
genuine Reelex packaging are far less
prone to tangles, knots and damage to
the product, and are demanding that their
suppliers provide them with products in
stress-free packaging. This, in conjunction
10
reel deal
with our technology being protected by
patents and trademarks, we believe is
having a positive effect in expanding the
use of Reelex versus knockoff alternatives.”
Reelex technology is a proprietary
method of coiling wire or cable into a
precision-wound figure-eight pattern. The
coil dispenses from the inside out, without
twists, tangles or inertia, and is used to
package low voltage cabling products.
Licensees sign an agreement to use the
Reelex system via equipment designed
and manufactured by Reelex Packaging
Solutions. Licensees are also obliged to use
the Reelex trademark on their packages.
The four new licensees are: Zhaolong

Lightower Fiber Networks has closed
Industry analyst Pyramid Research expects
the number of FTTH and FTTB connections
in Latin America to reach 5.1 million by
the end of 2015, part of an overall trend
that will see connections increase at a
compound annual growth rate of 34.9
percent over the next five years. However,
research predicts that DSL is set to remain
as the dominant fixed line technology.
Overall, Pyramid expects the number of
fixed lines for voice and Internet services
to reach 163.8 million by the end of 2015,
an increase of 2.3 percent over 2014.
In Latin America, fixed lines are anticipated
to grow at a CAGR of 2.1 percent over
16
the next five years. “Growth within fixed
communications markets will be mainly
driven by the increase in broadband
lines,” said Marcelo Kawanami, senior
analyst at Pyramid Research. “Despite the
effort from operators to leverage FTTH/FTTB
services, prices charged for broadband
services through fiber technology remain
high, and service coverage is still restricted
to selected areas within major cities,” he

buy the England-based manufacturer of
ties, insulation and protection systems for
automotive cable, HellermannTyton Group
Plc.
UK manufacturer Alloy Wire has invested
over £700,000 to boost productivity at two
of its sites.
Prysmian Group has a new contract with
Statnett SF and National Grid NSN Link, a
project specific subsidiary of National Grid.
Prysmian will provide an HVDC submarine
interconnector between Norway and the
UK.
The Russian government is to build an
underwater fiber optic communication line
from the Taman Peninsula, under the Kerch
Strait to the Crimean Peninsula.
Rupert Stadler, chief executive officer
of Audi AG, recently stated that digital
services will have the most impact on the
auto industry’s technology development
in coming years. Of the $1.7 billion
HellermannTyton acquisition, Delphi said
the purchase will help it capitalize on
growing demand for cars that connect to
mobile phones and other devices.
“Delphi continues to be focused on the
car of the future,” added Chris McNally,
an analyst at Evercore ISI in London.
“It’s leading this charge into the
connected-cars space.”
In a conference call, Kevin Clark, Delphi’s
CEO, said that: “The opportunity is really
big for our connector business to expand
outside the auto industry. The capability of
HellermannTyton and its strength of sales
give us a great opportunity to sell more of
our connector products.”
The company has installed three Zwick
tensile and hardness testing machines,
PMI material X-ray guns, a fully automated
multi-spindle spooling machine, a 5m
strand annealing furnace and a bespoke
wire finishing line. The additional facilities
will double Alloy Wire’s capacity.
MD Mark Venables commented: “Our
success has been down to our ability
to take on small batch quantities, fast
response times and the fact we can
manufacture in more than 60 different
alloys, including Inconel, Nimonic, Incoloy,
Hastelloy, and Ni-Span C902.”
Established in 1946, Alloy Wire is a
manufacturer of precision drawn round
wire, flat wire and shaped wire in a range
of high performance and exotic nickel
alloys. The company, which is now 100
percent staff-owned, supplies wire from
0.025mm (0.001”) to 21mm (0.827”).
The NSN Link will be the first power cable
system to connect the UK and Norway and
will enable power trading between the two
countries. It will be an important part of the
European grid reinforcement strategy, aimed
at reducing electricity prices, providing
cleaner energy, and to compensate for
the supply from ageing generation plants in
the UK that are to be taken out of service.
The overall project will set a new record as
the longest HVDC subsea cable link ever
installed, following a route of about 740km
in length between the converter stations in
Kvilldal in Norway and Blyth in the UK.
The contract is for the supply and installation
of a total of around 950km of submarine
and land cables in two sections (over 470km
route length in total) of the overall NSN Link
route length. The cables will be produced in
the Arco Felice factory, and marine cable
laying will be performed by the group’s Giulio
Verne cable laying vessel.
The corresponding decree has been
signed by prime minister Dmitry Medvedev
and posted on the Russian government’s
website. The project will be implemented
under the state program of socio-economic
development of the Crimean federal
district until 2020.
The line will have a capacity in excess of
200Gbit/s. Taking this into account, by 2018
the capacity of the channels ensuring
operation of the Crimean federal district’s
communication networks within Russia’s
single telecommunications network will
reach at least 310Gbit/s. This will make
it possible to create increased capacity
communication channels in Crimea for
ensuring the development of broadband
Internet access, telephone and television
on the peninsula.
The shallow (below 10m) 4.5km-wide Kerch
Strait separates Crimea from the Taman
Peninsula, and is used by up to a hundred
vessels per day.
Delivery and commissioning of the system is
scheduled for September 2021.

Dogger Bank go ahead
Up on the roof
A $300 million transatlantic cable, known
as AEConnect, has come ashore at Ross
Strand in Killala, County Mayo. The work,
carried out by Aqua Comms Transatlantic
Cable, was marked with a committee of
local councillors and officials, including
Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
ABB has commissioned the 800MW
DolWin1 HVDC offshore wind grid link in the
German North Sea for the Dutch-German
transmission system operator TenneT. The
DolWin1 grid connection is part of Germany's
Energiewende program, which aims to
generate in excess of 6.5GW offshore wind
capacity by 2020 and 15GW by 2030.
The UK government has given approval
to offshore wind consortium Forewind
for the development of Dogger Bank
Teesside A&B, in addition to the Dogger
Bank Creyke Beck A&B. Both consented
developments have a proposed installed
capacity of 2.4GW, making them the equal
largest renewable energy applications
to be approved in the UK, and together
at 4.8GW are believed to be the world's
biggest planned offshore wind scheme.
EvoEnergy will install a 3.8MW solar array
at the Telford, UK, distribution center of
workplace supplies provider Lyreco. The
23,000m2 installation will be among the
largest rooftop installations in the country
and, with almost 14,000 PV panels, will
become one of only five projects to
exceed 3.2MWh output each year.
The optic fiber cable will stretch from Shirley,
New York, a distance of 5,400km, and is
expected to generate a major economic
boost for the west of Ireland. The cable will
have the capacity to handle up to a third
of the world’s telephone calls and cover
the entire Internet traffic of Europe and
the US.
The system is expected to be live in early
2016 and will enable 53.8 millisecond
transfer speeds across the Atlantic.
Local councillor Jarlath Munnelly said the
project could “transform” Killala and the
north Mayo region. “This is an exciting
project… It has the potential to transform
North Mayo, not just Killala, by enhancing
the telecommunications infrastructure in
the area, and putting Ireland and Mayo
into the center of a global network.”
24
The DolWin1 connects the DolWin alpha
converter station to the landfall point
in Hilgenriedersiel, via a 75km subsea
cable, and then to the converter station
in Dörpen-West (Heede), in Lower Saxony,
Germany, as an underground cable system.
At present, the 215MW Borkum West II and
312MW Borkum Riffgrund I offshore wind
farms are connected to the DolWin alpha
through submarine cables.
ABB provided its HVDC Light voltage source
converter for the project, and also installed
the converter stations, and submarine and
underground cable systems.
With the commissioning of the DolWin1,
transmission capacity of offshore grid
connections in the North Sea reaches
around 4,300MW; a significant contribution
to the government's planned 6,500MW by
2020.
wiredInUSA - September 2015
The Forewind consortium of RWE, SSE,
Statkraft and Statoil has ceased work
on its remaining development consent
applications for the vast Dogger Bank area
to focus efforts on the four areas with consent.
The company commented: "These
four Dogger Bank projects are a huge
commitment and will require significant
resources and attention from the owner
companies to progress to the next
stages. Together their capacity is almost
equal to the total of all the offshore wind
farms currently in operation in the UK.”
The discontinued phase, known as Dogger
Bank Teesside C&D, has been removed
from Forewind's portfolio and the rights to
develop that area of seabed, along with
the remainder of the Dogger Bank Zone,
have been returned to The Crown Estate.
EUROPE NEWS
The array is projected to save £50,000 a year
in energy costs, as well as mitigating the
environmental impact of the distribution
center and Lyreco's delivery vehicle fleet.
Addison Energy Ltd, a company funded by
Guinness Asset Management's EIS service,
will own and operate the installation as
part of a 20-year power purchase
agreement.
“We are pleased to be investing in one
of the largest commercial rooftop solar
installations in the UK that will be built by
our long-term EPC partner, EvoEnergy,
and will enable industry leader Lyreco to
realize its environmental ambitions,” said
Malcolm King, investment manager for
Guinness Asset Management.

A global and China optical fiber preform
industry report, 2014-2017, shows preform
capacity amounted to 13,000 tons in
2014, mainly in the US, Japan and China.
China ranked first with a share of 39.8
percent. A major producer of optical fiber
preform, China is also a large consumer,
demanding 6,639 tons in 2014, 60.9
percent of global demand. The figure
is expected to increase to 7,144 tons in
2015.
Prior to 2010, due to technical limitations,
over 70 percent of China's demand for
optical fiber preform was imported. In
recent years, as domestic companies
have enhanced their capability for
independent research and development,
China's optical fiber preform production
capacity has continued to expand.
The self-sufficiency rate in optical fiber
preform rose from 20 percent in 2007 to
64.4 percent in 2014. It is expected to
reach 72.6 percent in 2015.

OMS chief executive officer Ronnie Lim
Hai Liang explained that Cable Orchestra
will be capable of installing as much as
5km of cable per day, depending on
seabed conditions. “It has the capacity to
carry 700 tonnes of cables, that equates
to about 200km,” he added.
In September, Cable Orchestra will start
work on a segment of the 20,000km
SEA-ME-WE 5 submarine cable system,
expected to last about 8 months. Lim said
that OMS plans to venture into deeper
waters, to depths of 50m to 3,000m, when
it acquires its next cable ship in 2017.

China’s solar
expansion
Construction has begun on a 200MW
solar energy project in China’s Gobi
Desert. Once completed, the facility is
expected to be the largest solar energy
project in the country with a project area
of 2,550 hectares. According to Qinghai
Solar-Thermal Power Group, the Qinghai
province facility is designed to produce
enough electricity to supply up to one
million regional households.
The facility is of a “solar energy tower”
design, thought to be more efficient than
the more commonly used “solar trough”
systems. Group board chair Wu Longyi
commented: “Its designed heat storage
is 15 hours, thus, it can guarantee stable,
continual power generation.”
The 200MW facility will be the country’s first
large-scale solar project under commercial
operation.
China is aiming to grow to 100GW of solar
capacity by the year 2020, up from around
28GW in 2014, but this represents only a
fraction of China’s electricity generation
capacity; fossil fuels remain dominant in
the country.

Australia’s wind power
expansion
Progress for Brazilian
link
The chairman of the Pakistan atomic
Energy Commission (PAEC), Muhammad
Naeem, has confirmed a government-set
target of 40,000MW of electricity by 2050
to help resolve the electricity crisis in the
country.
Siemens and Neoen Australia have signed
a contract for the Hornsdale wind farm
project in South Australia. Neoen Australia is
investing around €166 million in the project
which will make a major contribution to the
Australian Capital Territory government's
target of 90 percent renewable energy
by 2020. The project is underpinned by a
20 year contract to supply energy to the
territory at a fixed price.
Angola Cables, the company that will
manage the operations of the fiber
optic submarine cable between Angola
and Brazil, has acquired a plot of land in
Fortaleza to accommodate a station and
data center for the cable.
“We are confident about achieving this
target within the stipulated period, as all
the requisite projects and plans are in
place for this purpose,” he said.
Muhammad Naeem was speaking at the
13th Convocation of the Karachi Institute
of Power Engineering (KINPOE), adjacent
to the Karachi nuclear power plant
(KANUPP). He added that PAEC is set to
meet the target set by the government
to produce 8,800MW of electricity by
2030.
Naeem said that the PAEC has worked
hard to enhance its role in power
generation, adding that an immense
contribution has been made to the
country's nuclear program by the
graduates of Pakistan Institute of
Engineering and Applied Sciences
(PIEAS) and Karachi Institute of Power
Engineering (KINPOE).
wiredInUSA - September 2015
After commissioning, the Hornsdale wind
power plant is expected to produce over
400GWh per year, equivalent to a fifth of the
territory's annual electricity consumption.
“At the Hornsdale wind farm we have three
factors of success combined: Neoen's
international expertise, Australia's natural
resources, and the efficiency of our cutting
edge direct drive technology.” Commented
Thomas Richterich, CEO onshore at Siemens
wind power and renewables division.
Construction will begin immediately.
Siemens will provide 32 wind turbines with
associated civil and electrical infrastructure.
Siemens will also maintain the wind farm
for Neoen on a long-term maintenance
contract signed simultaneously with the
EPC contract.
ASIA / AFRICA NEWS
The concession contract was signed in the
presence of Aristides Safeca, the Angolan
secretary of state for telecommunications;

Cosme; and Antonio Nunes, Angola
Cables’ chairman.
Antonio Nunes explained that the
submarine communications cable will offer
a capacity of 40 terabytes per second and
data speed exchange of 63 milliseconds.
Angola Cables will manage the 6,165km
cable within the framework of the Atlantic
Cable System, making it possible to connect
Africa and South America. Connection to
North America will be possible when the
fiber optic Monet system begins operations
between Brazil and Miami.

SS Fiber Laser 6003 Airline
Sikora’s Fiber Series 6000 offers continuous
online quality control of optical fibers in
the drawing tower. The Fiber Laser 6003
measures the diameter of uncoated and
coated fibers. Depending on its point of
installation, it provides information on the
position, vibration frequency, tension and
spinning. The measuring principle ensures an
accuracy of ± 0.05µm.
In addition to having a presence on the
exhibit floor, T & T will be taking part in
a technical presentation. At this year’s
conference, T & T’s technical director,
Paul Lorigan, will be presenting a paper
entitled “Quantification of the flexibility
of flame retardant insulation and jacket
materials when designing wire and cable
products.” When selecting wire and cable
insulation and jacket materials for flexible
constructions, design engineers typically
seek softer materials. The softness or hardness
is most often quantified by durometer testing
in the Shore A scale. Although there is good
correlation between hardness and flexibility
with unfilled non-flame retardant materials,
there is less correlation when flame retardant
fillers are added to flexible polymers.
Fiber Laser 6003 Airline detects airlines
and, in addition, the gauge heads
provide information on concentricity and
temperature of the optical fiber. Fiber Lump
