The Three-way-valve (see Pos.5) applies
pressure to air operated elevator. The
Latch cylinder (Pos.4) will be actuated
and causes opening of the latch lock
and latch. The Latch will be locked in
opening position.

The Elevator can be attached to the
pipe. The Elevator will be closed when
a pipe touches the trigger. The Elevator
will be latched by the Latch and locked
by the Latch Lock. When the elevator is
completely closed the Latch Indicator
shows a green sign at the front.
Equip the elevators air supply with
a maintenance unit (Lubricator, air
regulator, filter) to make sure that
devices operate with clean compressed
air. An air regulator ensures constant
working pressure and guards the
pneumatic parts against break down.

When the latch is fully opened, valve
(Pos.3) will be operated by a cam plate.
Thereupon the valve (2) will be shifted
and the elevator cylinder (1) will be
actuated.
Then both bodyhalves will open,
pretension of the springs will be
increased and the trigger system will
move into a locked position and keep
the frame open. The three-way-valve
(Pos.5) has to be operated again and
compressed air of the system will
exhaust quickly through the valves Pos.

Greasing Points
Grease quality
In order to achieve efficient greasing even
at different environmental temperatures,
we recommend the following grease types
should be used (obtainable from Blohm +
Voss Repair GmbH):
Low-Viscosity grease
Type AVIATICON Grease XRF
Alternatively; use EP1 gear lubricating
grease for greasing ”non-oil tight gear
trains” when temp. < 0°C/32°F or EP2
when temp. > 0°C/32°F.
Grease Pump pneumatic
The lubricator unit should be filled with
antifreezing oil to prevent freezing of air
operated devices at temperatures up to
minus 20 °C/-4°F.
The valves, which are necessary to provide
the air operated elevator with compressed
air, should ensure quick ventilation of the
system.
33
MAINTENANCE
& INSPECTION
Lubricator and de-water
unit
Frequency of Inspection
Routine daily field Inspection
Visual field inspection of the elevator in an operating condition should be made by
the crew or the supervisor on a daily basis.
Semi – annual field Inspection
A thorough on the job shutdown inspection should be made on a periodic basic
typically at 2 month intervals, or as special circumstances may require. It is
advisable, that after field inspection a record should be made stating the extend of
inspection and inspection results.
Critical Load Inspection
Critical loads may be experienced, for example severe loads, impact loads such as
jarring, pulling on stuck pipe etc.
If in the judgement of the supervisor a critical load has occurred, or may occur, an
inspection equivalent to the semi-annual field inspection should be carried out.
If critical loads are anticipated, the inspection should be conducted prior to and
after the occurrence of such loading. If critical loads are unexpectedly encountered,
the inspection should be conducted immediately after such an occurrence.
Dismantling Inspection
When need is shown in a field inspection, dismantling of the elevator should be
made and an inspection in a suitably equipped facility should be carried out.
Wear of Equipment
MAINTENANCE
& INSPECTION
Normal wear of bushings and elevator ears caused by usage will eventually reduce
the load capacity of elevators.
The existence of cracks or the appearance of defects can indicate severe
deterioration and even failures. Prompt attention is required either to remove the
elevator from service immediately or to undertake appropriate repair.
A condition, that is by no means rare, is the dangerous wear of the 18 degree
Elevator/Bushing taper.
The 18 degree taper tends to round off and less contact area to the supporting
taper of the elevator will be availble.
The Elevator/Bushing taper, as a result, will begin to recess into the bore so that a
cylindrical surface of approximately the outside diameter of the tool joint will directly
be above the worn taper.
An occasionally large tool joint force may wedge itself down in the cylindrical
surface. The wedging may be that of a 2-3 degree angle instead of the 18 degree’s,
resulting in an extremely large spreading force.
A wear condition in its early stages is common. Frequently, it results in an tool joint
sticking to the elevator.
Elevators/Bushing showing hammer marks around the top of the bore should be
closely examined to determine whether it is the elevator, the tool joint or both are
faulty. Although the taper may appear to be correct (18 degree), check the entire
load bearing surface for deformations.
34
Methods of Inspection
Routine daily field Inspection procedure
Elevator should be visual inspected on a regular daily basis for cracks, elongations and
other signs of wear, corrosions or overloading. If any elevator show cracks, excessive
wear etc., the elevator should be removed from service.
All elevators should be examined to determine if the latch and the latchlock mechanism
as well as the trigger and pneumatic components are functioning properly.
Hinge pins, latch lug surfaces and link contact surfaces should be lubricated. Replace
ervery Warning Label which are damaged.
Semi-annual field Inspection
The periodic semi-annual or critical load inspection in the field should be conducted by
the crew with the supervisor.
Cleaning
Before the semi-annual or critical load inspection, all foreign matter should be removed
from the surfaces to be inspected.
Dismantling and Inspection
Dismantling of the elevator is required if a unifomity detailed inspection is necessary.
The 18 degree or 90 degree taper has to be inspected for unformity and depth of wear.
Uneven wear or worn recesses of 1/16 inch or more requires refacing of taper surface
or change the bushing.
Hinge pin and springs should be carefully inspected for excess wear and obvious
weakness.
Generally the Elevator Inspection should be carried out immediately when equipment is
returned to the base, warehouse etc. and is to be carried out prior to it´s being sent on
the next job.
The elevator should be dismantled and inspected in a suitable equipped facility
for excessive wear, cracks, flaws or deformations. Correction should be made in
accordance with recommendations which can be obtained from Blohm+Voss.
Weldings at the castings should be done only by Blohm+Voss or an authorized service
company.
Cleaning
Before inspection, all foreign material such as dirt, paint, grease, oil, scale etc. should
be removed from the areas to be inspected by a suitable method.

To identify the the conditions of the 18°
Elevator taper gauges are available for
all B+V Elevators (P/N 600018). A set
of gauges consists of an 18° gauge
(GOOD) and a 15° gauge (BAD)
1.
1. Using the GOOD gauge: If the gauge
sits directly on the bushing or BC without
showing any clearance between gauge and
bushing, the bushing or BC is OK.
2. If the gauge shows space between the
gauge and the bushing or BC, you have to
check with the second gauge.
3. Using the BAD 15° gauge: If the gauge
shows any clearance between gauge and
bushingor BC , the bushing or BC is OK.
4. If the gauge sits directly on the bushing
