BLACKHAWK TECHNICAL COLLEGE
Fall 2010 Community Education Schedule
Dear Blackhawk Technical College Community supporters,
Cyberspace? Online communities? Videoconferencing? It all sounds so technical
and so complicated, doesn’t it? Remember when we were able to put fifty cents
in a machine and get a Coke? Now we have to put a credit card into that machine,
and we get a performance. A mechanical arm will select the plastic bottle and
shoot it through a tube; and for the privilege of being able to see that happen, we
now get to pay two dollars instead of fifty cents. I don’t want to be cynical because
I grew up thinking about what things would be like in the future.
I watched the Jetsons on TV when I was a kid. This cartoon was about a family of
the future, and I liked the idea of the bubble car hovercraft he "drove" to work. I
wish I had one to avoid Interstate 90 so I could just cruise over to BTC in a couple of
minutes. The neatest invention of the future on that show was the automatic meal
machine that let you punch in what you wanted to eat; and it would then give you
a hot, tasty, and elegantly prepared meal. How cool was that? At first I thought it
was great that you pressed a button and received food from nothing; but then I
thought, "That just isn't right."
When I was younger and looked at the potential for the future, I liked the thought
of progress and innovation. When it was my chance to engage in that innovation,
however, I found I needed a new learning curve. In my day, we started using
computers in high school, but I didn't know of anyone who had one in their home.
I remember asking, “What button do I push to get this started?” I didn’t know all
of the things it could do. I thought it might type by itself. My first “a-ha” moment
of joy on the computer came when I saw that I could correct something in the
WordPerfect word processing program by simply typing over it. I remembered
typing papers on a typewriter and using correction fluid and those little chalky
strips of correction paper. Yuk!
Today, people are learning new conveniences of technology and millions are taking
classes online. I was a little apprehensive when I took my first online class; but I
learned there were a lot of first-timers out there, and there continues to
be more every day. I enjoyed the convenience of being able to spend
time with my family and the flexibility of turning on my computer
(I found the button) when I had the time to do a lesson. Blackhawk
Technical College has several options for online classes. Our Education
2 Go (Ed2go) classes provide students with 300 courses to choose
from in areas of computer software, writing, languages, and noncredit
certifications. You can really learn a lot on your own time and interact
with people in “cyberspace.” It wasn’t as hard as I thought, and I do like
being able to spend extra time at home with my family. We would love to
have you in our classrooms; but if that isn't convenient for you, consider
taking an online class with us. You can find all of our online selections
under “Community Education-Online Courses” on BTC’s website. You can also save
time by taking your hovercraft to campus, but we don’t have parking for that yet.

Make Your Celebrations Sweet
There are so many ways to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays and holidays…this year why not make them extra
special? The cake decorating classes at BTC can help you
learn essential techniques in creating beautiful and
delicious masterpieces for your next celebration.
BTC is lucky to have many talented culinary experts;
and today, we will focus on one of our very own cake
experts, Stef Culberson. She is not only an instructor
at BTC, but Stef is also a full time mother of two, a food
stylist, and farmer (founded The Goose Chaser Farm,
where she grows sustainable food) living in Blanchardville, Wisconsin.
“Cooking and baking is fun and should be treated as a creative outlet. I want the students in my
classes to see how fun baking and decorating
can be by expressing themselves in their edible
works of art.” –Stef Culberson
Stef moved to Wisconsin from Heidelberg, Germany
in 1998 and credits her baking/cooking skills from her
mother's influence, "decorating pastries, cakes and
cookies is a hobby of mine," Stef replied. She was a corporate Food Stylist for the Swiss Colony and has been
featured on the Food Network's well known show,
"The Secret Life of...a Food Stylist." In New Glarus,
she is known to many as the "Spaetzle" Chef with her
involvement in various events.
In 2009, Stef was invited to present "Sustainable Food
Three students from Stef's class with their creations.
Styling Techniques" at Boston University for the International Food Styling and Photographers Conference,
which became one of her most memorable experiences.
When you turn on the television and watch Cake Boss
on TLC, they make decorating with fondant and flowers look, well…like a piece of cake. According to Stef,
it really is easier than you may think. Cake decorating
is something anyone can do as long as they have determination and patience in practicing the techniques,
but it certainly offers “sweet rewards.”
When talking about goals for her classes, Stef wants
her students to have fun and take back skills and an
enthusiasm for the culinary world. 
“The technical colleges throughout Wisconsin
provide our residents with many opportunities
to expand their horizons and gain new skills. As
an instructor, I am able to meet students with
amazing backgrounds and interests that help me
continuously change the styles of my teaching.”
–Stef Culberson
Real Estate Education at its Finest
Community Education at Blackhawk Technical College
(BTC) has been fortunate to have many groups of great
instructors throughout the years. Robert Blakely is one
of those individuals and has been teaching real estate
courses at BTC since 1985. Bob started his teaching career with real estate practice courses and then added
continuing education for real estate licenses, for both
brokers and salespersons about five years later.
Bob is a self-employed attorney at Blakely & Blakely
Law Firm which has been serving the Beloit area for
more than thirty-two years. The firm specializes in real
estate and landlord tenant law, estate planning and
trusts, probate, and family and divorce law. Bob has
also participated in the drafting and reviewing of test
questions for the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing exam for brokers and salespersons.
He has also assisted in reviewing for accuracy the
Dearborn Publishing "Wisconsin Real Estate Practice
& Law book," which is also for
brokers and
salespersons. His experience
has
helped many people taking part in the community
education programs at BTC
achieve their goals in the
real estate business.

– with a modern touch to give your soap that luxurious

of the soap we create in class. Bring old long sleeve shirt,
rubber gloves, safety goggles, a quart-size empty cardboard
milk container, and an old towel. All other supplies provided.

Introduction to Reflexology
Reflexology is the physical act of applying pressure to
the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger and hand
techniques without the use of oil or lotion. It is based on a
system of zones and reflex areas that reflect an image of the
body on the feet and hands with a premise that such work
effects a physical change to the body. You will be learning
these techniques to share and promote health and wellness.

Leadership:
Solution-Focused Communication
Examine your personality type along with the personalities of
those around you. Are you more like an otter, beaver, golden
retriever, or a lion? This will help determine why we respond
the way we do. Kids? Co-workers? Telemarketers? Spouses?
Each poses its own challenges. We are going to learn how to
“play our movie” forward to find the solution to conflicts and
obstacles in communication with others. There is a great reward
in communicating to find an answer. Join us and find out!

BTC Welcomes Tracey Wren to Community Education
Blackhawk Technical College (BTC)
would like to welcome Tracey
Wren into her new position at the
Monroe Campus. Tracey has been
with Blackhawk part-time since
July 2007 as a library aide, computer tutor and Student
Activities Advisor (for the past two years). The Community Education Department is excited to have Tracey
on board, in her new role as the Continuing Education
Specialist for Green County.
The confidence and drive that Tracey has shown in the
past three years at BTC will certainly continue in her new
position. As a graduate from the University of WisconsinStout with a degree in Business Administration and a
specialization in Human Resource Development and
Training, she will certainly be able to assess the needs of
the community and create courses to meet their needs.
Tracey and her family have lived in Green County since
1998. “Our family chose Monroe because it offered its
residents many opportunities for young families in both
recreation and education. There are so many organizations that work collectively to provide wonderful opportunities for the community,” she mentioned.
Tracey is the perfect fit for her new position, as she
understands how important continuing education is to
the people and businesses in our district and throughout Wisconsin.
“I believe creating partnerships can be an excellent
opportunity in offering a variety of continuing
education courses that are meaningful to the
community. We really have some talented people
in the community who are willing to share their
expertise, and it is great that we are able to offer a
variety of courses locally and affordably priced.”
–Tracey Wren
Education is a priority to Tracey, and she feels that
working at a technical college has given her the chance
to share with others the array of opportunities available and also provide support along the way. “I have
been encouraged by the students attending BTC. The
students who have been displaced from their jobs and
have turned their adversity into an opportunity for a
career change, and succeed…it is great to see!”
“I look forward to helping the students we serve
at BTC develop professional skills they can take
into the workplace!”
–Tracey Wren

Blackhawk Technical College (BTC) has had the opportunity to welcome many new areas of study into its Community Education courses. Susan Myoyu Andersen, Roshi,
has helped in initiating the training of Meditation to students throughout the area. Meditation isn’t something
new, but the need for relaxation and stress reduction has
been very high due to the changing economy and many
other factors affecting people in our communities.
Susan, a resident teacher at the Great Plains Zen Center
and an occupational therapist at a school for children
with autism, has been helping BTC students restore calm
and inner peace into their daily lives with her meditation classes. Meditation is a simple and inexpensive way
to improve a person’s emotional well-being and also
provide health benefits for those with certain medical
conditions.
“BTC is very lucky to have an open-minded,
innovative attitude within their administration.
There are not many colleges offering courses on
meditation, and it shows that BTC is a forwardthinking college because they are already offering
courses like this. I think more institutions will
follow their lead in the future.” –Susan Myoyu Andersen, Roshi
The Community Education Department at BTC has been
working with businesses in a variety of outreach centers
and are proud to be represented at the Great Plains Zen
Center with Susan’s Meditation courses. The students in
her classes have enjoyed taking the course in a facility
30

where regular meditation retreats are held because they
feel they can “connect” with the environment.
Susan has been impressed with the dedication that her
students show not only in the class, but also in their efforts
taken in practicing daily/weekly meditation retreats. “The
students help me understand how meditation is helping
them with their individual obstacles.” she responded. 
“With friendly and helpful
staff and innovative
course offerings, BTC is a
wonderful place to
be a lifelong learner. “
–Susan Myoyu Andersen, Roshi
(Robert Blakely article continued from pg. 3)
Bob chose to teach at Blackhawk Technical College
because he had always been interested in teaching
people who were “wanting to learn” new skills for their
career. The classroom atmosphere at BTC has been an
excellent way to learn as a student and an instructor.
“The thing I like best about teaching at BTC is the
interest the students have in learning and the
interesting discussions we have because of the
diverse nature and background the various students bring to the classroom.”
–Robert Blakely
“Throughout the years there have been many things that
have changed the way I teach through technology; however, the greatest emphasis still remains in the lecturing
and discussions in the classroom, “ Bob mentioned. The
“real-life experiences” which Bob shares with his students
as an attorney have assisted his students in the learning
process and in the working world. 
"Bob is an awesome instructor. He takes the time
to make sure his students understand the topic."
