From the President: Donald R. Ditter, CPD
Last Chance, The ASPE Technical Symposium is being held in Dearborn, Michigan at the end
of this month. If you plan on attending please let me know, there are a few people going and
you may want to share a ride.
Thank all that attended the September meeting. We had a great turn out and I hope that we will
be able to continue to show a strong attendance throughout the entire year. This is a vital part of
our chapter’s existence. Gregorio has once again set up quite a few interesting meetings for the
2009-2010 calendar year.
Our Chapter has “officially” given our past due rebate money back to the Society for the building fund. A special THANK YOU goes out to our entire chapter from Julius Ballanco, he
greatly appreciates the support.
This month, we will be visiting the Consol Energy Center construction site. Please remember to
bring work shoes, hard hat and safety vest to the tour. We will be meeting at the PJ Dick/Hunt
construction trailer prior to taking the tour for an introduction. McKamish will also have representatives on hand if there are any questions. I think this will be a great opportunity and I hope
to see you many of you there. Your board members have decided that we will take a Good Will
Donation at the site prior to the tour. Our Chapter will match those donations and we will contribute our collection to the Mario Lemieux Foundation.
I will see you on Monday, October 12th. I have attached a map of the site to show where we
will be meeting. You may park in any of the numerous lots around the site. If you have any further questions, please contact one of your chapter officers.
See ya then,
Don

From the VP Technical: Gregorio P. Torchia, CPD
Greetings and salutations to all and welcome to the Pittsburgh Chapter of ASPE’s October 12,
2009 meeting. Happy Columbus Day to all those that observe the holiday.
There are still a few openings for tabletops and presentations but I plan on having those filled
soon. Please contact me to reserve a spot for any of the open months before it’s too late. Also,
for the Holiday tabletops we are looking to have 10-12 sponsors at $50 per tabletop. I would
appreciate for those of you who are interested to contact me ASAP to confirm that our meeting
place will be able to hold the total tabletops.
I want to thank Don Waldorf and Michelle Carney of the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority for a very informative meeting in September. Don and Michelle are available to discuss new
projects requiring tap-in procedures for sanitary and water within the City of Pittsburgh at
412.255.0841 or email at mcarney@pgh2o.com. For additional information on details and applications, refer to their website at www.pgh2o.com.
October’s meeting will be a tour of the Consul Energy Center during the construction phase.
Please bring along with you a hard hat, safety vest (bright yellow or orange) and work shoes.
Refer to Donnie’s portion of the newsletter for additional details of the tour. Please arrive at the
PJ Dick/Hunt job trailer for 6pm.
There will be no tabletop or dinner for the month of October due to the tour.
The “Plumbing Systems & Design” magazine still offers members a way of earning CEU’s at
no cost. September’s topic for CEU’s is on “Hot Water System Design”. Members will need to
log in at www.psdmagazine.org, read the article and take the exam online. By receiving a 90%
or better, you have the potential of receiving 0.1 CEU’s.
Thanks,
GREGORIO

A letter from the Allegheny County Health Department, Plumbing Section dated September 15,
2009 indicates Department records show that there are numerous plumbers who have failed to
renew their registration and are currently delinquent and that their efforts to contact these persons has been exhausted. Per Section 106.7.4 of Article XV Plumbing, Rules and Regulations
of the Allegheny County Health Department employers are responsible and accountable to verify that employees hold a current and valid plumbing license. Licenses are valid for only 1 year
per each renewal. All of the department’s field staff are instructed to verify the license status of
the plumbers on the job as a part of the approval procedure of the work being performed. Individuals working and not holding a valid license will be assessed a civil penalty and/or legal
proceedings in accordance with Article XV. The Department’s offices are available by phone
or fax to verify the status of any holders license.
Thanks,
Jerry

From Secretary: Kevin M. Morrissey, GE
As of the printing of this newsletter, we have 43 people signed up to tour the Consol Energy
Arena this coming Monday. A special thank you to Greg Torchia for getting this set up with
the help of Don Ditter. Additionally, we appreciate the help of McKamish for hosting us on
this tour. There is still time if you have not signed up. It is first come / first serve. Send me an
email if you want to join us.
We will no longer publish the entire list of members for attendance. Instead, we will only list
those people who attended the previous month’s meeting.
REMINDER: We offer free announcements and want ads in this newsletter. A manufacturer’s
new product or updated website does not qualify. If your rep agency has taken on a new line,
that falls under the free announcement. If your firm has hired a new engineer, that also qualifies.
Hope to see you Monday!
Kevin
