In addition to this abiding sense of gratitude, I want you to know that your willingness to partner with us empowers us to achieve our end – to provide a Christian and human education for the young and especially the economically challenged. It is not easy being a Catholic secondary school in any American city. However, I think the challenge is greater in Brooklyn and Queens than in many others. The demographic shifts in our two boroughs, and the precipitous closure of the Catholic elementary schools, account for much of the stress on the system. However, the challenge to provide for Loughlin’s long term sustainability and to establish Loughlin as the school of choice is both energizing and engaging. Your support enables us to achieve some extraordinary goals. While keeping a tight reign on expenses is in the interest of good stewardship; we have continued to grow programs while maintaining support for successful ones. We have increased the number of Advanced Placement courses to six and we look forward to adding Calculus and Music Composition to their ranks in the 2014-15 academic year. Our differentiated reading program, called Teen Biz, realizes tremendous gains in reading ability for both challenged and advanced readers. While consistently fielding successful basketball and track programs we have added Lacrosse to our athletic offerings. Our music program hosted a citywide venue for middle school orchestra, band and chorus. Proudly, five of our students made the prestigious All City Band. Once again we have a student named a semifinalist in the New York Times scholarship competition, and also an Achievement finalist from the National Merit Exam. These are added to a long line of Horatio Alger scholarship recipients. Remember that last year, 100% of our seniors were graduated and that 98% are attending a college of their choice. Look with pride at the good that you do! Your financial support of Loughlin gives us the necessary edge to remain competitive in this volatile urban environment. Be certain that your support is necessary and that it is used wisely to support and sustain the mission of our Founder, St. John Baptist De La Salle. In our Lasalllian schools, the teacher is viewed as an ambassador of Christ. Be assured that this reality is evidenced in every aspect of our school’s daily life from the morning prayer, to retreat days for all grade levels, to school wide liturgies, and to daily discipline. This is a snapshot of the good you help accomplish. Thank you for what you have done. I hope and pray that I, as well as our students, can count on you in the coming year. Live Jesus in our hearts. Forever. Sincerely, Brother Dennis Cronin, FSC President 4 THE CLERMONT Its Completed! Bishop Loughlin is home to Brooklyn’s second largest Green Roof The turf is a mix of sedum, succulents, grasses, and other drought tolerant plants—which do not need to be irrigated or replaced. In the wintertime the plants do not lose their leaves, only recede a bit and change color. The soil is mostly composed of expanded shale, which is sturdy in the wind and rain. Brooklyn got its newest green roof when Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School unveiled its new addition in a community ceremony on June 10, 2013. Two years ago, green roof architects Eric and Andrew Dalski, founders of Highview Creations, proposed the idea of installing a sustainable roof garden on top of the school. The project was financed through a quarter-million dollar grant from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, at no cost to the school, and now completed (end of July), the school boasts the second-largest green roof in the borough. “It happened by nature of an extended family connection,” said school president Brother Dennis Cronin, FSC. The Dalskis’ father is an alumnus of Bishop Loughlin’s class of 1961. The brothers, who have installed green roofs throughout the city, had the idea of installing a green roof at the school after their father attended a high school reunion. The city decided to award the grant to our project because the school is located in a low-lying sewage area, where severe rainfalls can cause flooding. The new green roof is designed to save about 5,000 gallons of water – and any accompanying pollutants – from entering the sewer system during heavy rain. Before the project began, city engineers assessed the 18,000 square foot school roof, and determined that it could bear up 60 pounds of additional weight per square foot. The roof garden, which is planted with succulents that can sustain extreme temperatures and exposed conditions, may also save the school heating and cooling costs for its 75-year-old building. School administrators are also excited about using the roof’s succulent garden as a laboratory for environmental science classes, as well as the possibility of using a section for an herb garden. “We want kids to realize that there’s an industry around that and that it’s healthy for the community,” Brother Cronin said. Basketball team wins CHSSA Brooklyn/Queens championship Queens Khadeen Carrington scores career-high 42 points in Bishop Loughlin’s 90 -71 win in title game by Johnathan Corbett New York Daily News Saturday, February 22, 2014 Khadeen Carrington and Bishop Loughlin owned Brooklyn/Queens on game night. And at the pace the Lions’ star is playing at, it may not be long before the rest of the city belongs to them, too. Carrington showed Christ the King why he deserved to be the league’s MVP, scoring a career-high 42 points as Loughlin trounced the Royals, 90-71, in the championship game of the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens tournament at St. Francis Prep. “Personally, for me, it was a great game,” said Carrington, who is headed to Seton Hall. “It was a great game for the team and we tried to beat them when it count(ed), which is tonight.” The teams were battling back and forth for the first five minutes, but then Carrington threw down a one-handed jam, which opened the flood gate for the Lions as they would close out the first quarter on a 13 - 4 run. The Lions had everything going for them, scoring a total of 49 points in the first half, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by senior guard Darius James. “It got me fired up,” Carrington said of his fast 6 THE CLERMONT break dunk that turned the momentum. “It got the team fired up, the crowd, the bench and it got us going a little bit.” Carrington is used to having career moments against Christ the King. On Jan. 31 he scored his 2,000th career point against the Royals. That was the same night when Christ the King’s Adonis Delarosa received a technical foul and suspended for two games. Delarosa had 23 points and teammate Rawle Alkins added 17. “Bottom line is they played like they were suppose to,” Christ the King head coach Joe Arbitello said. “They have seven seniors who wanted to win the Brooklyn/Queens championship and Khandeen Carrington is just so under control and making shots, he’s tough to guard when he’s that good.” Carrington missed only four of his 19 shots and was getting to the line with ease. He was able to control the tempo of the game and had Christ the King in early foul trouble, which made it a lot easier for him to get to the rim. “The kid is an amazing player and the performance that he displayed today was unbelievable,” Loughlin head coach Edwin Khadeen Carrington and Mike Williams both hit career milestones in Bishop Loughlin 79-65 win over St. Francis Prep game by Justin Tasch New York Daily News Carrington becomes Lions’ alltime leading scorer with 1,561 points. Williams reaches 1,000 points for career. Tuesday, December 17, 2013 Khadeen Carrington (left) and Mike Williams (right), seniors playing together for the third straight year at Bishop Loughlin, have grown close on and off the court, emerging as a dominant backcourt duo and both inking letters of intent to Division I schools in New Jersey. Queens game. Gonzalez said. “There’s a certain look in his eye, I know that look, he had it in the last game and he had it this game, so I knew he was up for a big performance.” The two Daily News first-team All-City selections from last season were rooting for each other on Tuesday at their home gym in Fort Greene, as each eyed a career milestone, which they both accomplished in a 79-65 win against previously unbeaten St. Francis Prep (6-1, 5-1) in a CHSAA AA Brooklyn- Carrington, who will play for Seton Hall, broke the program’s all-time scoring record in style, finishing off an alley-oop with 1:31 left in the game to give him 1,561 points. JayVaughn Pinkston, a former McDonald’s All-American currently at Villanova, previously held the record with 1,560. Carrington needed 26 points to break the record and finished with 28. Carrington also had some big time help from Mike Williams, the future Rutgers guard, who totaled 19 points and made severel hustle plays that changed the game. He had 11 points at halftime. “Kill, kill, kill,” Williams said. “First game we played against them I had a good run and then I got injured and the second time we played them I didn’t play too well, having two points, so I told myself this, I have to step it up big time, this is where the players separate the men from the boys.” It was in that third quarter where Williams, a Rutgers signee playing through planter fasciitis in his right foot, put in a layup after an offensive rebound to hit the 1,000-point mark for his career. He needed 13 points and finished with 18, eight rebounds, four assists and four blocks for the Lions (3-1, 3-0.) Carrington and Williams, the top tandem in the league, are looking for their first city title together. The Lions have back-to-back byes in the intersectional playoffs, which begin Sunday. Loughlin is looking for its first city title since 1992. “We just need to win the next one - one game at a time,” Gonzalez said. “I need to keep these guys humble, I have to keep them hungry and I have to keep them focused.” “I did press a little bit because in the third quarter (Williams) told me I needed eight or something,” Carrington said. “But after I got to about five or four, I said ’I’m gonna get it.’” That landmark seemed to be weighing on Williams, who wanted to get it over with. “Big relief,” he said. “I felt myself getting closer and I started rushing a little bit. And then they were like,’Calm down, you’re gonna get it.’ I got it now and I can breathe easy now.” Each player was presented with a commemorative basketball encased in glass. They wanted the achievements to happen in the same game. “It’s amazing because we were talking about this after our loss on Sunday,” Williams said. “We said, ’How many points away are we?. . . .We can do this at home. That makes it even better to do it right in front of our home crowd.” “That’s beautiful,” Loughlin coach Ed Gonzalez said. “They were pulling for each other...they look out for each other.” – Reprinted with permission – Reprinted with permission BISHOP LOUGHLIN MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL 7 AROUND LOUGHLIN Our Students Excel Briana Lee ’14, National Merit Scholar ‘The Wiz’ comes to the Loughlin stage By Adrian Roque Silvas ’15 Congratulations to senior Briana Lee, who is a semifinalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Program. Congratulations to all. 8 THE CLERMONT With months of preparation and hard work from just about every performing arts group in the school, and under the direction of Ms. Sonya Wells, Communications and Marketing Coordinator, Bishop Loughlin Performing Arts brought their own version of ‘The Wiz’ to the Loughlin stage on March 14 and 16. Over 100 students participated in the largest performance undertaken in years at the school, either performing on the stage, or working behind the scenes as part of the stage crew. Uniquely bringing together the talents of the various student Bishop Loughlin performing arts groups, ‘The Wiz’ created a memorable display of a wide range of talent. This take on the play allowed the show to become a reflection of what our students are capable of doing. There were performances by student groups African Dance, Ballet, Chorus, House Dance, Latino Dance, Modern Dance, Step Team, and the Senior and the Junior Band—all in one show-stopping performance! ‘The Wiz’ was truly a magical production. We hope you enjoy the pictures on the facing page from the performances! Bishop Loughlin Performing Arts presented ‘The Wiz’ March 14 & 16, 2014 ALUMNI NEWS 60th Bishop Loughlin Games honors Ed Bowes ’60 Former Bishop Loughlin track and field coach Ed Bowes honored at 60th annual Bishop Loughlin Games indoor track meet at Armory Track and Field Center Staff Report New York Daily News Saturday, December 21, 2013 Ed Bowes was honored at the Armory Track and Field Center in Washington Heights on Saturday, when he oversaw his 31st and last Bishop Loughlin Games indoor track meet. But the former longtime Bishop Loughlin track coach was almost known for something entirely different. He was nearly a Big Apple sporting legend. Running the New York City Marathon for the very first time in the early 1970s, Bowes had a late lead and was looking very much like the eventual winner. But Bowes made a critical mistake in judgment even before the race started, and it cost him dearly. “I said, ’Let me do this. . .It can’t be that difficult,’” Bowes said. It’s not that Bowes wasn’t taking the Marathon seriously, but he had never run more than a few miles at a time. And back then, hydration wasn’t something that runners thought much about. “Basically I collapsed in the lead at the 23mile mark, up in the Harlem Hills,” Bowes said. “When I got up I was in an ambulance. 10 THE CLERMONT “I didn’t hit the wall, I hit a mountain,” he said. “Total dehydration. I didn’t want to slow up at the water stations. I paid the price for it.” Bowes can laugh at the moment now. In fact, it was one of the many highlights of a decades long career in running that was celebrated at The Armory during the 60th annual Bishop Loughlin Games. Bowes estimated that he had been involved in at least 54 of the Games, dating back to when he was a freshman at Loughlin High School in Brooklyn. Saturday’s event included about 4,000 athletes from over 200 high schools in seven states and, for the first time, the U.S. Virgin Islands. With a very big assist from Bowes, the Bishop Loughlin Games have become the biggest and most well-known indoor high school meet in the country. “It’s difficult (to walk away). But it’s getting too hard for me,” said the 71-year-old Bowes, who retired from teaching and coaching at Loughlin in 2003, after 39 years at the school. “I’m just gonna watch from the sidelines now.” Bowes is handing over the meet reigns to Angela Murdock-Ridley, a former track star at Loughlin who graduated from the school in 1984. Many of Bowes’ former athletes attended Saturday’s ceremony, some coming to the city from places like Rhode Island and Connecticut. “He’s just a class act,” said Bill Heaney, a member of the Bishop Loughlin Class of ’71 who ran for Bowes’ team. “You went to Loughlin to run track.” – Reprinted with permission Bishop Loughlin Council Luncheon presents annual Lionheart Award to Noreen Haffner ’63 This year, the Lionheart was awarded to Noreen Haffner ’63 of Bishop McDonnell (pictured here with Bishop Loughlin students). The Lionheart Award is presented to an alumnus or friend of Bishop Loughlin, St. Augustine, and Bishop McDonnell High Schools in recognition of their support of Lasallian Education at Bishop Loughlin and whose civil contributions have made a positive difference in so many lives.” Bowes estimated that he had been involved in at least 54 of the Games (out of 60), dating back to when he was a freshman at Loughlin. Your contributions are changing lives; again we are grateful for all your support of Catholic education in Brooklyn and look forward to seeing you at Bishop McDonnell events. 14 THE CLERMONT BISHOP LOUGHLIN MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2012 - 2013 FROM THE BOARD Dear Alumni and Friends of Bishop Loughlin, Bishop McDonnell, and St. Augustine, I have the honor of writing to all of you as I end the first year of my term as Chairman of the Board of Governors of Bishop Loughlin. It has been a successful and rewarding year for the school, due in great measure to the dedicated service of our Board and the generosity of our loyal donors. Thank all of you for your commitment of time, talent and treasure to the laudable goal of sustaining the Lasallian tradition of educating New York’s urban young men and women. As you page through this annual report, I hope you can appreciate how well the faculty and administration of our school have used the resources you have provided. Academic achievements, 100% New York State regents diploma graduation rate, athletic excellence, artistic and cultural prowess, and community service all demonstrate how well Lasallian values have been instilled into the young men and women in our charge. We all should be proud of what has been done, and conscious of the need to sustain this “oasis of hope “we have created here in Brooklyn. I have been asked why Bishop Loughlin has thrived throughout the recent recession while other urban catholic schools have foundered. While there is no simple answer, and little margin to rest on our laurels, the Board of Governors undertook creation of a strategic plan with the goal of laying out a sustainable path for the school into future decades. We continue to monitor progress against the milestones of the plan, and I am pleased to report we have emerged from the recession with a stronger balance sheet than we began. Our President, Brother Dennis Cronin FSC, and his management team have been effective stewards of tuition and donated funds. Our Admissions team has maintained enrollment levels, and our Development group has opened new channels of economic support which have brought us through these tumultuous times. As the national economy continues to improve, the next phase of the strategic plan will begin. While we have made it through the recent challenging times, we recognize we have had to defer certain necessary capital improvements to our venerable, but aging school building. In addition, while the economy has been improving, unemployment and under employment still plagues many of the families in our school community, thus we have a need to significantly increase need-based scholarships to allow our students to complete their education and achieve their dreams. To respond to these needs the school and Loughlin Foundation have begun consideration of a capital campaign with the goal of substantially increasing funds available for scholarship and capital improvements. I know we can once again depend upon our base to be the catalyst of the effort even as we open new channels of support across the spectrum of people who have benefited from a Lasallian education or have been favorably exposed to those who have been so fortunate. A high quality education is, and always has been, the great equalizer in determining how well a person will fare throughout a lifetime. St. John Baptist De La Salle understood this very point so many years ago. Moreover, now more than ever, our country needs a broad base of young leaders to pursue a competitive edge in the global economy. Your generosity to 700 young people, who have such great potential, helps them individually, and helps us all continue the 150 year tradition of our three schools - now united under the purple and gold banner of the Lion – to develop leaders for generations to come. Again I thank you for your generosity, and I ask your greater benevolence as your means will allow. Faithfully yours, Bob Conry ’70 Board Chair 16 THE CLERMONT 2012 - 2013 FINANCIALS Revenue Total Revenue $7,689,129 Investment Return 3% Tuition$4,313,684 Fees $ 593,985 NY Mandated Services $ 623,376 Investment Return $ 211,837 Rental Income $ 10,000 Contributions $1,820,988 Other Revenue $ 115,259 Total Revenue $7,689,129 Rental Income <1% NY Mandated Services 8% Fees 7% Contributions 23.6% Other 2% Tuition 56% Operating Expenses Total Expenses $6,687,933 Student Support Services 6% Instruction $3,504,548 Administration $1,762,866 Student Support Services $ 411,061 Student Activities $ 129,192 Student Activities 2% Administration 26% Operation and Maintenance $ 568,807 Fundraising $ 198,498 General Expenses $ 112,961 Total Operating Expenses $6,687,933 Operation/ Maintenance 9% Fundraising 3% General Expenses 2% Instruction 52% BISHOP LOUGHLIN MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL 17 BISHOP LOUGHLIN LIST OF DONORS LASALLIAN BENEFACTOR $100,000 + Loughlin Alumni Association Foundation Michael W. Murphy ’60 by DR. ROBERT VIZZA ’51 When asked how has Bishop Loughlin influenced my life, I can sum it up in one word—values. Having entered Bishop Loughlin in my most formative and impressionable years, I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to be exposed to a values-based educational institution — not solely nor simply academic. The values I embrace are: • Our unique abilities are God-given, and therefore with that gift comes a responsibility to use those talents in a productive way. When I attended Loughlin, it was a scholarship school; you gained admission through a competitive exam. Your parish paid for its top two students based on test results and academic record. Every student had ability. • One must use those God-given abilities to make a difference, to make a contribution to the world in which we live, and to others. The example of the Christian Brothers, who dedicate their lives in the service of others, led me to pursue first a career in Education, having served as a Dean of a Christian Brothers College, and then as a CEO of a major cardiac hospital, and finally, still engaged as President of a Foundation that sponsors cancer research. • Loughlin taught me by example and academically that we are spiritual beings first and foremost. • Understanding the importance of integrity was the most important part of my character formation as a student at Bishop Loughlin. • Although academically demanding, which laid a good foundation for higher education, we were taught an appreciation for learning – how to learn, in addition to subject matter, since learning must be a life-long process. These educational values served me well as I later attended college and graduate school through to a terminal degree. WHY WE CHOOSE TO SUPPORT BLMHS AND BMDHS WITH ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS My wife Joan is a graduate of Bishop McDonnell High School and shares the importance we place on good values. We appreciate the opportunity we were given and would not have been able to attend these schools without financial aid. Therefore, we want to give others the same chance we had to make something of their lives. And, of course, we have enjoyed many blessings in life and want to give back in appreciation. My fondest memories of Bishop Loughlin center around sports and extracurricular activities where I made lasting friendships – friendships still there today. Loughlin always placed an emphasis on track, and though I started school in the cold weather of February, we were made as part of our gym class to change into shorts and go running on the track. One day, a classmate challenged me to a race around the 220 track. I was around the second turn when he finished! Little did I know that he would go on to gain Olympic fame as a track star. His name was Vernon Dixon. But I also concluded that my sport was something other than track. So I went on to other sports and activities where I developed friendships that continue to the present. Recently, one on my grandchildren had to write a report on someone they knew. He choose to write of my career and summed up his paper by stating that what he learned from his grandfather was the importance of “determination, hard-work, integrity, and respect for his fellow human beings.” I concluded that if that came across to an 11 year-old boy, then Loughlin really did a job on me, for which I am grateful. The best advice I received over those years was “when you are given an opportunity, or create one, don’t blow it.” Joan and I sincerely hope that being able to give others these opportunities will result in one or some of them writing this same kind of note in the future. Thank you for implementing our scholarship program. BISHOP LOUGHLIN MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL 25 Col. Daniel J. Murphy ’38 Mutual of America Thomas J. Myers ’53 Judge Robert L. Nahman ’57 Anthony J. St. John Baptist De La Salle, the Patron Saint of Teachers, would be proud that his legacy is alive today in more than 80 countries and thriving here in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, at our own Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School. THE JUSTINIAN SOCIETY Established in 2000 and named for Brother Justinian, who famously served as Principal for St. James Academy from 1870-1877. THE CALIXTUS SOCIETY Named for Brother Calixtus Peter, the first Principal (1909-1913) of Brother Justinian may be most remembered for his proud and unwavering stand against criticism of Catholic education. In fact, he challenged any school, public or private, to “meet his boys in public examination.” His challenge went unanswered and Bishop John Loughlin used the incident frequently to promote the cause of Catholic education. Justinian Society members contribute in a unique way. Society members recognize that our long-term financial health is paramount, and have included Bishop Loughlin in their estate plans. Making a planned gift achieves many goals. When you make a bequest to Bishop Loughlin, you enter into a covenant to benefit future generations of students. Also, planned gifts reduce your burden of income, capital gains, or estate taxes. Members of the Justinian Society include: Drew Bostinto ’72 Edward J. J. Bowes ’60 Gerard D. Buckley ’57 George J. Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School continues to build that same foundation with today’s student body. Members of the Calixtus Society include: John F. Wall ’65 Leonard P. Connor ’53 James F. McGowan ’53 St. Augustine. HOW CAN YOU JOIN? For more information on joining the Justinian or Calixtus Society, please contact Andrew Leary at aleary@blmhs.org or 718-857-2700 x2251. If you already have Bishop Loughlin in your plans, please let us know. 32 THE CLERMONT Richard G. Riccardi ’57 Latisha Richardson ’08 Anthony J. Richmond ’74 Michael Ridge ’71 John J.
