The theater of the self, influenced by art history, pop culture, and fashion, takes center stage in this international exhibition. Every picture in this visually lush exhibition tells an aspect of the story of our times. Photographs of constructed realities in the Flora series were created in collaboration between Neeta Madahar and the subjects of the portraits. 8 Conversations—Marking 20 Years 5/16/14 to 9/21/14 Charlotte Crosby Kemper Gallery Conversations—Marking 20 Years brings together premiere works of art from the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art on the occasion of the Museum’s 20th anniversary. Pairings and clusters sparked dialogue between the visitor and the works of art, questions amongst friends who visit the exhibition, and conversations about the relationships between artists and the art that is a testament to their time. Marking 20 Years indeed marks a signature moment in the history of the Kemper Museum. 9 Summoning Ghosts: The Art of Hung Liu 10/10/14 to 1/11/15 Charlotte Crosby Kemper Gallery The exhibition Summoning Ghosts: The Art of Hung Liu is the first comprehensive survey of the artwork of Hung Liu—one of the most prominent Chinese painters working in the United States today. Featuring paintings, as well as personal ephemera such as photographs, sketch books, and informal painting studies from private and public collections around the world, the exhibition celebrates Liu’s career accomplishments and includes work completed in China before the artist arrived in the U.S. 10 This American Life Jarrett Mellenbruch: Float 2/18/14 to 9/19/14, Kemper Museum This exhibition presents works from the Kemper Museum’s permanent collection that explore the social, geographic, and historical subjects connected to aspects of life in America. Depictions of the familiar, images of people, places, and things, take on larger meaning when seen in the context of the exhibition. Among the artists featured are Christopher Brown, Rackstraw Downes, Janet Fish, Elizabeth Layton, and Jamie Wyeth. 5/16/14 to 9/1/14, Kemper Museum A site-specific installation on the grounds of the Museum by Kansas Citybased artist Jarrett Mellenbruch, who is known for his interest in community engagement and interaction. This series of 8 hammocks commissioned by the Kemper Museum for the outdoor space invite the audience to take leisure time and relax on and amongst contemporary art. The Center is a Moving Target 4/4/14 to 8/1/14, Kemper at the Crossroads The Center is a Moving Target highlights artists whose evolving practice and works speak to the impact and meaningful shifts in the term “regionalism” in contemporary art. The exhibition featured recent two- and three-dimensional and time-based-media works by 12 artists living and working within a 20-mile radius of Kansas City’s Crossroads District (a curator-designated region). Barry Anderson: Pigeon 4/18/14 to 2/1/15, Kemper Museum Reflecting on the poetics of place, Barry Anderson’s single-channel video installation Pigeon (2001) (7:37 minute loop) engages the viewer in both the activity and stillness of a site. In this digital film of a pigeon moving under an arch of flowing water in the Piazza del Campo in Siena, Italy, Anderson focuses on the quiet mystery and humor of the everyday. Accompanied by the existing sounds present in the piazza, the video grounds us in a sense of real-time for a brief and unexpected exchange. Depth and Meaning: 20th Anniversary Gifts 6/6/14 to 5/24/15, Kemper Museum Depth and Meaning: 20th Anniversary Gifts presents a selection of works of art gifted to the Museum by artists and collectors, dealers, and other friends of the Museum. The works on exhibition in the Meeting Room and Sally Kemper Wood galleries have been gifted in honor of the Museum’s twenty-year milestone. Additionally, these extraordinary gifts add depth and meaning to our understanding of the styles and influences of contemporary artists whose works are already a part of the Kemper Museum Permanent Collection. Make Your Mark 9/5/14 to 8/8/15, Kemper at the Crossroads Making a mark can be an expression of an artist’s signature style, the literal result of the artist’s gesture interacting with the surface of a work, or more simply the manipulation of material. Make Your Mark features ten works from the Kemper Museum Permanent Collection that emphasize the individual tropes and gestures employed by a selection of artists in making their signature mark. This exhibition celebrates the distinctive marks that define the identifiable styles of these individual artists. 11 Education and Outreach Programs 2014 - Children and Family School Tours Free school tours engage students in discussions about modern and contemporary art and how it relates to their lives. More than 3,800 school children visited the Museum in 2014 for docentled tours. Transportation Cost Reimbursement Program The Kemper Museum provides funds to cover transportation costs for Title 1 schools, primarily in the Kansas City, Missouri, Center, and Kansas City, Kansas school districts. A total of 1,829 students from 29 schools utilized the program in 2014. ArtReach A collaboration with the Center for Child Health and Development at the University of Kansas Medical Center, the Museum offers four free ArtReach workshops each semester for children with and without developmental disabilities. During 2014, ArtReach expanded from 20 to 24 workshops allowing 60 additional children to participate. An exhibition of the children’s artwork was on display at Kemper at the Crossroads. Camp Kemper Camp Kemper is a free, 3-day spring and summer camp for children ages 6-8, and 9-12 (a spring session was added in 2015). Campers learn about the Museum’s Permanent Collection and special exhibitions while participating in gallery games, hands-on activities, and interactive discussions. Camp Kemper participants doubled in 2013 and 2014 from the level in 2012. 12 No Boundaries Teen Art Initiative In 2014, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art introduced an innovative pilot program, the No Boundaries Teen Art Initiative. This unique program selected 18 teens ages 13-15 years from a diverse range of socioeconomic circumstances and area schools (including homeschoolers) to explore their talent and passion for art at Kemper at the Crossroads. Program goals include inspiring creativity and innovation, cultivating critical thinking and problem solving, and promoting communication and collaboration. To be selected for the program, students were nominated by their art teachers, answered a short questionnaire, and submitted a sample of their art. Three artist educators mentored and guided the group for eight consecutive sessions, and culminated in a public program and exhibition at Kemper at the Crossroads. The success of the 2014 pilot program led to the program’s adoption as an annual program in 2015. The inaugural class of teens and artist educators celebrated creativity and collaboration through the No Boundaries Teen Art Initiative. Hands-on ArtReach workshops allow children of all abilities to express themselves through the visual arts. 31 Homeschool Programs Homeschool Art Sampler and Fine Art First Friday serve homeschooling co-op groups or individual families. Each session is designed to be an interactive experience that encourages students to examine objects and ideas through observation, discussion and activities. These 2013 pilot programs garnered strong positive feedback from participant parents, and are now important parts of the Museum’s programming mix with six sessions planned per academic year. Scavenger Saturday Scavenger Saturday welcomes families to hone their art detective skills and discover something new. Children with adults may pick up a self-guided activity at the Visitor Services Desk and follow the clues through the Museum’s galleries on this “ART-astic” adventure. Tots on Tuesday Tots on Tuesday offers story-time, songs, expressive movement, and hands-on art making for 3 to 5 year olds led by a librarian and Museum educator. Art Stop! To encourage learning and sharing, Art Stop!, a self-guided handout, is developed each month featuring two Permanent Collection works, fun facts and guiding comparison questions. Art(full) Bag The Art(full) Bag is filled with objects to support and create educational connections to the Museum’s main gallery exhibition. Families are encouraged to use the hands-on materials for a deeper understanding of the exhibition and its beauty, intention, and meaning. Art for All Family Day Art for All Family Day programming includes adaptations and strategies to ensure accessible settings and inclusive experiences for all abilities. In 2014, visually impaired participants donned gloves and felt the Deborah Butterfield sculpture. This event was held in collaboration with Accessible Arts Kansas City. Gallery Conversations Gallery Conversations encourage drop-in tours led by staff-trained docents introduce visitors to current exhibition themes and help to convey in-depth understanding into the artists and art on view. 14 Self-directed activities, such as Art(full) Bag, and Art Stop!, allow opportunities for art adventures at your own pace. 11 Education and Outreach Programs 2014 - Adults Visiting Artist Program Sweet Summer Block Party With generous underwriting from Jack and Karen Holland, the Visiting Artist Program enabled more than 30 exhibiting artists and related civic and cultural leaders to interact with the public at the Museum through free Artist Talks, workshops, and as guest educators at the Museum’s youth programs in 2014. The Sweet Summer Block Party was designed to draw all ages together on a summer evening on the grounds of the Museum to enjoy the current exhibition, family-friendly films, and treats. Hands-on Workshops Hands-on Workshops have included watercolor painting, acrylic portrait painting, monotype printing, wire sculpture, collage, mixed media, and creative wrighting. Led by area artists, these workshops provide creative opportunities that expand on themes and media present in Kemper Museum exhibiting artists’ works. Double Visions = one artist + one expert • Don Lambert, who discovered Elizabeth “Grandma” Layton was joined by Arzie Umali from the UMKC Women’s Center in a spirited look at gender (in)equality in the visual arts. • Matt Rich, whose artworks are in the Kemper Permanent Collection, was joined by his dealer, Camily Alvarez, as they pulled back the curtain on the artist/dealer relationship. Sunday Cinema Typically curated by Museum staff or the artist(s) within the exhibitions, Sunday Cinema films are intended to provide viewers deeper insight into the artists’ worldviews. 16 Volunteer Docents Joy Blake-Krug Helga Blanco Greg Brown Donna Clark Judy Claycomb Wanda Colon Karen Conrad Elizabeth Darr Mark Dirkes Lynn Douthat John Escalada Carol Getty Merrily Goetz Nancy Graves Billie Hale Gabrielle Rhodes Handler Karen Hartzler Michael Holdgraf Janet Jakobe-Gray Bebe Kemper Mary Kent Jan Kyle Vicky Mayer, a volunteer docent, provides lively dialogues through exhibitions.
