Do more than cross your fingers
We live in challenging times. Yet for the Cincinnati Area Chapter of the
American Red Cross the past year was a good year in many respects
because we did more than cross our fingers. Although the new National
marketing campaign released this month, ‘Do More Than Cross Your Fingers’,
refers to the wisdom of being prepared for emergencies, it can just as easily
be applied to our situation. Our chapter had a good year 2009 because we
didn’t sit around waiting for good fortune to come. Instead, we aggressively
worked it from all angles. We ran harder increasing our pace in so many
ways: in fundraising, making more
asks to new audiences using
modern technology; in service
delivery, recruiting more volunteers
and strengthening our partnerships;
in moving toward one Red Cross,
we’ve been helping our community
chapters and National organization
make significant headway on our
goal of delivering consistent highquality service to all with one voice.
We know that today more than ever
people are hurting because of the
economy and the American Red
Cross is there to help. Consider
the numbers of other services we
provide nationally:
• 200 times a day, American Red
Cross volunteers help a family
who lost everything in a house fire
or other disaster.
• 475 times a day, the Red Cross connects men and women who serve in
the armed forces with their families.
• 43,000 times a day, a person receives life-saving Red Cross health, safety
or preparedness training.
• 290,000 times a day, a child receives a measles vaccination from the Red
Cross and our partners
You’ll see many local examples in this Annual Report. We focused on our
mission, worked to be outstanding stewards of donor dollars, created new
ways to engage donors, leveraged new tools and looked toward the horizon
fully understanding that when times are tough, the country needs the Red
Cross even more and we’re committed to being at our very best. You’ll see
many examples of these efforts – efforts to do more than cross our fingers —
in the Year in Review.
Perhaps the most obvious example of doing more than just ‘hoping for
the best’ is finishing the construction of our new Headquarters/Disaster
Operations Center (DOC). Designed to prepare for and respond to daily and
major disasters, the new DOC is scalable, located in a highly visible area
for easy public access, and perhaps as important, it’s being built as a green
building. After years of planning, the DOC is finally becoming a reality with a
move in date of May 2010. We look forward to welcoming our community to
the Grand Opening in mid-June of 2010. Hope to see you there!

H I G H L I G H T S
This has been a year of accomplishments for the Cincinnati Area Chapter
of the American Red Cross. Our first brush with a Hurricane happened
last September when remnants of Ike swept through the Tri-state causing
large-scale damage and leaving hundreds of thousands without power.
Our Chapter was on the frontline to help meet the needs of the community,
opening six shelters in two hours; delivering a week-long relief effort that
served more than 25,000 meals and countless hundreds of bottles of
water to our neighbors.
The Chapter was able to activate quickly and effectively with the help
of the companies that participate in the Ready When the Time Comes
program. In all, 226 Ready When the Time Comes volunteers jumped into
action throughout the year, most of whom supported the relief efforts that
surrounded the Ike windstorm.
The Chapter’s young professional group, Club Red, teamed up with the
Bacchanalian Society to hold a standing-room-only wine tasting event to
support the Chapter’s disaster relief efforts.
March is Red Cross Month and this year the Chapter hit the ground
running. The goal to have two people trained in every household in the

region trained CPR was met beyond expectations. Classes filled up in
record time with more than 1,000 registrations, a 27 percent increase
over the prior year.
We broke ground on the new Disaster Operations Center. Over the
past 50 years, the need for Cincinnati Red Cross services has grown
tremendously. With a jurisdiction of 25 counties in the Tri-state region,
we can no longer meet the ever-growing needs of the community at
our downtown location efficiently.
Our Groundbreaking Ceremony in April was attended by a standing
room only crowd of elected officials, volunteers and friends. As each
piece is built, we remember that this building not only represents
the Red Cross, but this building’s core foundation represents the
community in which we serve. The new building will provide our
2,000 dedicated volunteers the tools they need to better prepare and
respond to disasters. As we all know, disasters don’t discriminate nor
do they have any set guidelines as to when and where they may strike.
The Red Cross is there to provide the resources the community needs.
The new Headquarters/Disaster Operations Center is to be running by
next spring.
In the aftermath of the September 14, 2008 Hurricane Ike windstorm, the Cincinnati Area Chapter Red Cross
opened six shelters, seven distribution centers, and distributed 26,000 meals and hundreds of bottled water.

properly smooth surfaces that must hold hundreds of volunteers and staff
during disaster operations. Their work may not be visible once the Disaster
Operations Center is completed but plays a crucial role in the strength of
the building. This is much like the work of our volunteers that may or may
not be seen but are the foundation of the American Red Cross.
Youth volunteers devoted some of their summer vacation to form the Red Cross Players, a drama troupe
dedicated to creating and performing skits with preparedness messages for children. Students wrote scripts,
created costumes and props and performed “Three to Get Ready”, which used three of Aesop’s fables to
encourage kids to make a disaster plan, get a disaster kit and get first aid trained. The show was performed
14 times at the Cincinnati Museum Center, reaching 812 people. Front – Kody Sexton Middle – (L-R) James

foundation for a new generation of prepared citizens. Through these
classroom presentations, area elementary students learn key Red Cross
preparedness messages about making a disaster plan, making a disaster
kit and getting trained in first aid. Student participants take home materials that help their families understand what they can do to take their
home preparedness to the next level. With staffing provided through our
partnership with AmeriCorps-Prepare Ohio, 9,500 students and their
families were impacted this year.

O U R
D O N O R S
The American Red Cross is a humanitarian
organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief
to victims of disasters and helps people prevent,
prepare for and respond to emergencies. This
mission is made possible by two critically important
groups of people – our volunteers and our generous
donors. Thanks to the generous donors below who
made gifts in 2008-2009.
Clara Barton Society
No name better symbolizes the spirit of caring and
of active volunteerism than Clara Barton, founder
of the American Red Cross. The human devastation
of the Civil War both horrified her and ignited her
determination to make a lasting difference. In 1881,
she brought the fledgling International Red Cross
movement to America, with its dedication to easing
human suffering and its reliance on voluntary
support. The generous donors listed below have
made an annual contribution of $1,000 or more
supporting the mission of the American Red Cross
and the vision of Clara Barton.
Saving Lives Society
Founded by William Howard Taft in 1905, the story
of the Cincinnati Area Chapter of American Red
Cross is a compelling one. We respond to more
than 700 fires a year, train thousands of volunteers
to be ready at any time to go across the country or
down the road to provide relief to disaster victims,
and help save lives by equipping every day citizens
with the needed skills of CPR and water safety. The
members of the Saving Lives Society drive these
accomplishments by providing the funding needed
to make the programs and services of the Red Cross
possible by making a five-year commitment of at
least $1,000 per year. This support ensures that the
Cincinnati Area Chapter of the American Red Cross
will be there well into the future.
Building Readiness Campaign
New emergency demands and an urgent call for
preparedness make it necessary for the Cincinnati
Area Chapter of the American Red Cross to expand
its disaster relief capabilities. To meet these needs
the chapter has started construction on a new technologically advanced Disaster Operations Center
(DOC) located at the Keystone Parke development at
Dana Avenue and Interstate 71. With this new facility, the Red Cross will be able to respond quickly
and effectively to disasters of any proportion.
The total project cost is $14.4 million including
technology, furnishings, moving expenses, land
acquisition, and contingency costs.
Completion of this project is slated for late spring
of 2010 and the chapter has raised nearly $12
million of the needed funds, thanks in large part to
this year’s Building Readiness Campaign donors.
Thank you!
