Volitis Notes on Degree Candidates Green and white tassels distinguish honors graduates: Summa Cum Laude GPA of 3.75–4.0 Magna Cum Laude GPA of 3.50–3.74 Cum Laude GPA of 3.25–3.49 GPA is the cumulative grade point average based on the available grades prior to spring semester. Cords, medallions, or colored tassels may be worn by some members of academic honor societies to signify their achievements. The standards for this distinction are set by each honor society. The cords are worn around the neck and drape down the front of the gown. Special intertwined green and white cords may be worn by 20 graduates today. This indicates that they were selected as the Class of 2011 Top 20 Seniors by a committee comprising faculty and staff from a variety of academic disciplines, based on leadership on campus, community involvement, and quality of character. Four international students will wear sashes displaying the colors and symbols of their home countries: Canada, Germany, and Japan. The list of candidates for degrees and honors today should not be considered an official list since it is based on information prior to collection of the credits and grades of the final semester. Please Note: This ceremony is being live-streamed. A webcast is viewable at plymouth.edu. Distinguished Adjunct Teaching Award Lisa Travis, Adjunct faculty, Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance A faculty member in the Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance since 2005, Lisa Travis’s 25-year career has blended two of her passions: teaching and choreography. An alumna of the Boston Conservatory of Music, Travis has performed with modern dance companies in California, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, and has danced with Emmy Award-winning dancer Billbob Brown since 2002. She is founder and artistic director of Terminal Hip Dance Theatre, a collaborative performance group based in Plymouth. Travis has choreographed musicals for private and public high schools throughout New Hampshire as well as for the Papermill Theater, a non-profit arts organization supporting the arts in northern New Hampshire. Recently she served as guest choreographer for the Vietnamese National Opera and Ballet. Distinguished Teaching Award Irene Cucina, Professor of Health Education, Department of Health and Human Performance Irene Cucina is a nationally recognized physical education and health researcher and educator. A faculty member in the Department of Health and Human Performance since 1998, Cucina serves as assistant chair of the department, directs the University’s teacher preparation and advanced preparation programs, and serves as the institutional coordinator for teacher education accreditation. Over the course of her career, Cucina has received numerous awards, including the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) Honor Award for outstanding professional achievement, the Eastern District Association Honor Award for career distinction, the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport’s Pathfinder Award for enhancing the role of women in sports, the New Hampshire AHPERD Outstanding Professional Award for College Teaching, and the Massachusetts Secondary Teacher of the Year Award. She has been inducted into the Northeast Women’s Hall of Fame, and is a fellow of the North American Society for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Cucina has served the organization in a variety of elected and appointed positions at the state, district, and national levels. She was recently elected president of AAHPERD, representing PSU on the national stage in advocating for healthier lifestyles and fitness. Honorary Doctorate of Business Dick and Betty Hanaway, New Hampshire business owners and humanitarians Dick and Betty Hanaway of Holderness, NH, are successful business leaders and longtime philanthropic supporters of the University who have sought to enrich the entire region through enhancing artistic, cultural, and recreational initiatives at PSU. To honor the loyal support offered by the Hanaways, Plymouth State named the 665-seat proscenium theatre in the Silver Center for the Arts the Hanaway Theatre, and the ice sheet in the newly-opened PSU Ice Arena is the Hanaway Rink. The impact of the Hanaway Rink is well aligned with the impact envisioned for the Hanaway Theatre when it opened more than 15 years ago— a vision based on institutional need combined with community inclusion for the betterment of all. The couple has created opportunities for student and professional programming in the Silver Center and offered sponsorship for the Department of Athletics. Avid skiers, climbers, and bikers who have scaled the highest peaks on five continents and biked four times across the US; ballroom dance partners with a passion for performance and perfection; and tireless volunteers who share their time and talents in myriad ways—the Hanaways have made a point of thoughtfully and deliberately living and giving, engaging with their community, and advocating for high quality of life for all area residents. Commencement Speaker Larry Haynes ’86, President and CEO for the Grappone Automotive Group Larry Haynes is president and chief executive officer for the Grappone Automotive Group, one of New Hampshire's largest automotive retailing groups, known for both business excellence and community service. Prior to joining Grappone, Haynes was employed at Deloitte & Touche, First NH Bank, and the MEG Companies in various financial and accounting positions. A native of North Stratford, NH, Haynes became a certified public accountant in 1988 and a certified financial planner in 1991. He received his MBA from Southern New Hampshire University in 2000 and completed the Leadership New Hampshire program in 2003. In May 2007, he was appointed as PSU representative to the University System Board of Trustees. Haynes also serves on the PSU President’s Council, the volunteer advisory group that provides leadership and support to the president of Plymouth State University regarding development and fundraising. An alumnus who lives the PSU motto of Ut prosim (That I may serve), Haynes in 2009 received the Plymouth State Distinguished Alumni Service Award and in 2010 was inducted into the PSU American Marketing Association Chapter Alumni Hall of Fame. The order used in today’s procession has evolved through many years of practice at Plymouth State University. At the front of the line is the faculty marshal, 2010 Distinguished Teaching Award recipient Warren Tomkiewicz, who will carry the University mace, a symbol of authority and unity. The marshal will be followed in the procession by two flag bearers, the president of Plymouth State University, the provost and vice president for academic affairs, members of the University System Board of Trustees, honored guests, speakers, vice presidents, and senior class officers. This group is followed by the faculty, who march in order of rank. The faculty is followed by the bachelor’s degree candidates. academic regalia The tradition of the academic mace began in the late fourteenth century when two ancient instruments, the royal scepter and the battle mace, were combined to form a symbol of authority of the rector of a university. Today, the academic mace, along with the presidential medallion, signifies that the president of the university is the temporary embodiment of the power, authority, and autonomy vested in the institution. The marshal carries the academic mace at public events such as commencement exercises and convocations as a symbol of the special stewardship authority and trust reposed in the faculty for the curriculum and academic affairs of the university. The PSU mace was designed and created by Professor of Sculpture Philip Lonergan in 2004. The caps, gowns, and hoods seen today have evolved from costumes worn during early religious processions to distinguish church and university members from the laity. In present times, the attire serves to indicate, by style and adornment, the chief academic degree attained, the major field of study, and the college or university attended by the wearer. The modern academic costume worn in the United States is based on an intercollegiate code established in 1895. Most gowns are black, but more American colleges and universities now permit the wearing of college colors. The bachelor’s gown has long, pointed sleeves, and is untrimmed and worn closed. The master’s gown, worn either open or closed, has long, crescent-shaped sleeves. The doctor’s gown has velvet panels down the front and around the neck, and velvet bars on the bell-shaped sleeves. The velvet is black or the color of the wearer’s major field of study. The customary head covering is either the mortarboard or the Oxford cap. The tassel on the mortarboard cap may be black or of a color indicating the degree. The doctor’s tassel is usually gold in color. The tassel is worn over the left front quarter of the mortarboard once the degree has been awarded. The hood, which drapes over the back of the gown, carries the greatest symbolism of all the components of the academic costume, and dates back to the twelfth century when it was intended as a head cover or shoulder cape. Its length and width denote the wearer’s highest academic achievement. The color of the velvet trim reveals the wearer’s major field of study. Linings, which are exposed in the center of the hood as it lies over the back of the gown, indicate the colors of the degree-granting institution. Those who hold more than one academic degree may wear only one hood at a time. academic gonfalons Gonfalons, which are banners hung from crosspieces on poles, have descended from medieval Italy where they were used as symbols of state or office. They have been adopted by many universities and colleges to enhance the ceremonial nature of the commencement exercises. Plymouth State has created its own gonfalons with the university colors of dark green and white on the outer panels and the inner panel of each representing one or more academic fields of study. Please refer to the following list for academic colors and gonfaloniers. academic department center velvet panel colors Art Brown Atmospheric Science Golden Yellow and Chemistry Biological Sciences Golden Yellow and Russet Business Drab (Tan) Communication Studies White and Crimson Computer Science and Technology Orange Counselor Education Dark Blue and Light Blue and School Psychology Criminal Justice Purple Education Light Blue English White Environmental Science and Policy Peacock Blue, Golden Yellow, and Russet Health and Human Performance Sage Green and Light Blue History and Philosophy Dark Blue and White Language and Linguistics White and Light Blue Library Lemon Yellow Mathematics Golden Yellow and Light Blue Music, Theatre, and Dance Pink and Brown Psychology Dark Blue and Golden Yellow Social Science White and Citron Social Work Citron Printed on FSC-certified paper containing 10 percent post-consumer recycled fiber E. gonfaloniers Meredith A.
