IIDEA Workshop Session 2012 @ Tsinghua University
I. Introduction 导言
IIDEA, the International Institute for Developing Engineering Academics, is a global leadership
training institute focused on establishing a global network of engineering faculty development
programs to disseminate learning about the transformation of engineering education worldwide.
This will be carried out by twofold activities by: 1) providing a menu of development, capacity
building and training activities to engineering and related disciplines professors, administrators,
graduate students and other interested individuals, and 2) providing a professional growth
mechanism for the community of faculty developers in engineering education.
CEE, the Center for Engineering Education, Tsinghua University, is a cross-disciplinary research
center for engineering education studies. As a leading institute of engineering education research in
China, CEE has not only made broad academic impacts on engineering education, but also played a
think-tank role in policy-making of China’s engineering education reform in the past years. Now
CEE devotes to promote the transformation and development of engineering education in China
even worldwide.
In May 2011, CEE and IIDEA co-organized two 1-day workshops at Tsinghua University: 1)
Learning Environments: Bridging the Gap between How We Teach and the Practice of Engineering,
offered by John S. Lamancusa (Penn State University) and Lueny Morell (Hewlett Packard); 2)
Project and Problem Based Learning, offered by Anette Kolmos (Aalborg University) and Erik de
Graaff (Delft University of Technology and Aalborg University).
The IIDEA workshop season at Tsinghua University initiated a substantial cooperation between
IIDEA and CEE. In October 2011, CEE and IIDEA signed a Memorandum of Understanding for
Academic Cooperation to promote strategic collaborations as below:
1)Developing an engineering and related disciplines capacity building and training program in
China that includes both strategic (deans, department/program leaders) and tactic (professors,
graduate students, etc.) education and academic management areas.
2)With the support of respective academic resources and network, both parties try to promote the
cooperation in engineering education research and consultancy.

1. Workshop Abstracts 内容提要
Engineering Education for the 21st Century Workshop: the Role of Industry-University and
Accreditation (Two Days)
The evolution of the world economy and the challenges it faces are forcing countries and regions
develop keen strategies to enhance their economies and competitiveness. As we see around the
globe, many of these strategies are based on human capital and capacity building, science and
technology and innovation. Thus, engineering education plays a fundamental role in the creation of
wealth, economic development and in the improvement of the quality of life for citizens around the
globe. Better and closer cooperation between higher education institutions and industry is crucial to
increase employability of engineering future graduates, thus making countries more competitive.
This IIDEA session will address two important issues at the heart of this transformation: 1)
engineering program accreditation for global mobility and recognition of degrees, and, industryuniversity collaboration for education and innovation. The workshop will focus on best practices
and challenges of building and nurturing partnerships between universities and large/small
companies both for research and education, and, share and discuss engineering program
accreditation systems as a mean to continuously seek excellence and obtain recognition of
engineering education quality, and in particular, the US ABET accreditation process details.
