5th International Conference Magnetism and Metallurgy WMM‘12 Co-sponsored by the UK Magnetics Society Ghent – Belgium June 20th to 22th, 2012 First Announcement International Conference „Magnetism and Metallurgy WMM’12" from June 20 to June 22, 2012 - Ghent, Belgium Scope of the International Conference: The 5th International Conference Magnetism and Metallurgy WMM’12 will, like the other editions, provide a general overview of status, trends and recent developments in the field of „Magnetism and Magnetic Materials and their Application“. Invited papers will be presented by experts on magnetism and magnetic materials from industry and universities. In addition a restricted number of exhibition or poster presentations will be included in the programme.. The aim of the WMM’12 is to bring together scientists from universities and research groups working on the development of magnetic materials, as well as electrical engineers from universities and industry, who are engaged in applications of magnetic materials. The 5th International Conference Magnetism and Metallurgy, WMM’12 will focus on applications in the fields of energy generation, higher energy efficient electrical machines and electrical machines operating at higher frequencies. The series of the International Conference on Magnetism and Metallurgy is organized by the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (TU BAF), Institute of Metal Forming in cooperation with Ghent University (UGent), Department of Material Science and Engineering. The WMM’12 will take place in Ghent, Belgium. The WMM’12 is again co-sponsored by the UK Magnetics Society. We expect the same kind of audience as for the 4th Conference. At the 4th International Conference Magnetism and Metallurgy, WMM’10, 2010 in Freiberg more than 140 participants from 21 countries were present during the conference. In addition to the delegates from the academic world and from research institutions, 20 participants from producers of magnetic materials joined the International Conference WMM10, including NSC, Wälzholz, Corus, Metglas, AMR Europe, AK Steel, Hitachi Metals, Arnold Magnetic Technologies, ThyssenKrupp Stahl, USSteel, Voestalpine, Nucor, Tempel Steel, Magnequench, Vacuumschmelze, ArcelorMittal, Shin-Etsu Chemical, JFE, Hoeganaes, as well as representatives from producers and users of electrical machines or electromagnetic components, including LCD Laser Cut, Kienle Spiess, Sundwik, SEW Eurodrive, Robert Bosch, SMS-Siemag, Siemens, Vatron, Brose Fahrzeugteile, VEM Sachsenwerk, Metis Instruments, Magnettechnik Kleine, ABB, Voith, Brockhaus Messtechnik, Institut Dr. Förster, EAAT, Daimler, VW. BMW, Honda, Laboratorio Elettrofisico. Danfos Compressors, Schneider Electric. Invited papers as well as posters were presented by experts of magnetism and magnetic materials from industry and universities. The presentations of the 24 invited speakers from 10 countries have demonstrated: the complexity of the topic and the need for a more extensive cooperation of the different partners to reach a better understanding and a larger progress concerning materials and products, the need for a more general discussion between material producers and producer of electrical machines of the different aspects: development of improved materials, material fabrication on one hand and market, design aspects, optimum choice and optimum use of the material on the other hand, the demand for an improved characterization of the magnetic materials, especially under complex exciting current the tendency to higher frequency application the need for evaluation of the effects of improved magnetic materials in electrical machines taken into account all components of the electrical machines as well as their life cycle. The organizers hope that the 5th International Conference WMM’12 in Ghent 2012 will provide latest developments to these aspects and demonstrate the progress. International experts from Europe, Japan, China, and USA will be again invited to cover by their papers the proposed topics of the 5th International Conference WMM’12. Topics of the WMM’12 are: Advances in process techniques: metallurgical routes Progresses in electrical steel grades and other soft magnetic materials Thin electrical steel grades Progress in modelling the evolution of microstructure and texture along the metallurgical processing route Progresses for high coercive NdFeB based hard magnetic materials and bonded NdFeB magnets Magnetic materials for automotive application Magnetic materials for energy generation Electrical steels for high energy efficient electrical machines and variable speed drives Special demands on electrical steels or alternative materials for different types of electrical machines Design-improved models for loss calculation Optimum use of magnetic materials in special application areas: optimum fabrication methods of the magnetic parts Chairpersons: Prof. R. Location: Ghent is one of the few cities in the world where the past and the present rub shoulders with each other comfortably creating a city of the 21st century wearing the mantle of a noble and prosperous past. No other city in Belgium has so many listed monuments. Situated where the Leie and the Schelde rivers meet, Ghent quickly became an influential and wealthy city during the 16th century, based on the textile and woolen trade. During these prosperous times Ghent rapidly expanded its network of cobbled streets and step gabled houses to make it one of the most picturesque yet relatively unknown cities in Flanders. The Castle of the Counts (Gravensteen) is an imposing building, surrounded by water, in the middle of Ghent. The St Bavo Cathedral houses the famous Van Eyck painting of “The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb” in the Baptistry, where Charles V was baptized in 1500. Saint Nicholas Church is the best remaining example of Scheldt Gothic architecture in Belgium and was built between the 13th and 15th century. Thanks to the Ghent Floralies, the largest flower show in Europe held every five years, Ghent has become known as the “City of Flowers”. Conference Location: The workshop will be held at the conference centre of Ghent University “Het Pand”, Onderbergen 1, 9000 Gent (further info at: https://www.ugent.be/en/facilities/pand on history and location of the site) How to reach the location: See also: https://www.ugent.be/en/facilities/pand/how_to_reach By public transport: - By car: Entering Ghent from the E40 or the E17, follow the parking-route to P7, "Sint Michiels Parking". This parking is only 50 m away from 'Het Pand'. - Arriving at Brussels airport: - Arriving by train in Brussels: Switch to one of the many intercity trains(IC) to, or via "Gent SintPieters”, Ghent's main railway station (Directions Brugge, Knokke, Blankenberghe, Oostende all stop in Ghent). Ghent is on the crossroads of the international lines "London - Brussels - Köln" and "Paris - Lille - Antwerpen" - From the railway station "Gent SintPieters": Take tram 1 from the tunnel under the railway station (every 6 minutes), get off at the "'Korenmarkt" and cross the river "Leie" (see map) via the bridge "Sint-Michielshelling". Turn left around the “Sint Michiels” church. "Het Pand" is situated next to the church. Hotel accommodation: There are many hotels in Ghent and Ghent area.
