To make it easier for you our popular flush-mounted boxes
now have a common generic name. Instead of having to
remember old servants like VP2, JR and Blåbokser, you will
only have to know the name Multifix. And especially so if
the best functionality, the shortest installation time and the
maximum reliability are among your demands.

The NEW halogen-free Multifix...
In addition to the new name given to the Multifix family, improvements and product news have also
been added. Among the improvements you will notice that all boxes are 100% halogen-free and that
they withstand 850° glow wire testing and temperatures between -25°C and +90°C. The product news
include for instance the Multifix Prefal cast-in box “Fillegran” for ceiling vaults, enabling installations
from above! It goes without saying that all Multifix boxes are adapted to current building and apparatus
standards, and that they have a modular design that makes them fit in with each other and with all
accessories.

Fire classification
The 850° glow wire test is
passed by all boxes in the
Multifix family. This is of great
value to you, since no fire
should be able to start in
a box due to for instance a
flash-over.
p. 12, 34
This is your box choice when fire-protection has
the highest priority. The boxes are all provided
with an expandable bottom plate that restores
the fire classification of the wall by expanding
when there is a fire!
... a family of high lineage
While the name Multifix may be new to you, you most certainly will recognize some of the Thorsman

who by collecting the best products and sharpening the offer can present a complete range of flushmounted boxes. And everything is done with the aim of making your job easier!

Are you curious to know about the advantages of the Multifix boxes? Here you
have some of the explanations:
• No matter what you would like to do,
Multifix is the solution! The range is
complete.
• Multifix satisfies all building and electrical security standards.
• The boxes are based on a common
modular system, are easily installed
and have a fairly sized space for connection of all c/c 60 device series.
• Technology and material make the
boxes resistant to most types of
strains.
• Thanks to a halogen-free flame retardant the Multifix boxes are good to
both people and environment.
• You can save time by using a power
screw-driver. Here are the screws you
may need:

One single box cutter
In the Multifix system you will only have
to use one single size of box cutter,
max. Ø74 mm, to make a hole. Why?
Because the junction box has the same
dimension of the collar as the apparatus
box. The exception is the c/c 67 mm
junction box, requiring a Ø84 mm box
cutter.

the inlets. The boxes are suitable for 45 mm beams and they can be nailed or glued onto the beams,
it’s your choice. For bigger beams there are box fixings to adjust the front edge to the level of the wall
board. Strain relief devices and locking tabs secure the installation.

Single boxes
1.5 module boxes
Multifix Eco considerably facilitates the installation of devices. The screw
ring is threadedd and adjustable, always ensuring a correct position of
outlets and switches.
The 1.5 box for 1.5 module outlets is half as
big again as an ordinary single box, providing
a perfect fit for the installation of flush-mounted
double outlets. A modern outlet will then only jut
out 12 mm from the wall, i.e. less than an ordinary skirting-board. Practically all technique is in
the wall. Flat, nice and easily installed!

Multifix Fire
When fire-protection is highly prioritized
P117642
The weak point in fire classification is often the box. When there is a fire, smoke
and oxygen flow through the hole, increasing the force of the fire. The solution to
this problem is Multifix Fire; fire classified boxes acc. to SINTEF 050-0204, type
approved for walls (EI30, EI60 and EI90) and ceilings (EI30 and EI60). They are
installed in fire classified walls/ceilings, directly without extra adjustments. All
Multifix Fire boxes have a patented bottom plate that expands in case of fire and
forms an insulation against the fire centre, thus automatically restoring the original fire classification of walls and ceilings.

here are the exceptions to the rule! Thanks to the smart Multifix interface
of the 1.5 module and the double box you can connect the stubs or the

Multifix Shielded
For shielded installations
P117643
The number of electrical devices around us increase more and more, while the
tolerance against disturbance from electric and magnetic fields is decreasing. You
can easily and effectively attend to this problem by using Multifix Shielded boxes.
They are coated on the outside with a metal layer, they have rigid, shielded stubs,
and a connected earth wire. They are to be used together with shielded tubing/
flexible conduits and shielded outlets/switches.
18
Shieded stubs with
sealings and locking tabs
For shielded conduit systems. The screw ring of the box is
threaded and adjustable, thus always ensuring the correct
position of outlets/switches. Due to the square coupling space
and to the extra box depth of 57 mm, the box can house installations of larger devices. Available with flexible or rigid double stubs in two directions, shielded and provided with locking
tabs and sealings. Direct fit for 45 mm beams without separate
board fixings. Handles both single and double boards.
Rigid double stubs in both
directions, suitable for both

Shielded junction box c/c 60 mm
For shielded conduit systems. With the same threaded and
adjustable screw ring as the apparatus box. And the collar diameter is the same too, so you won’t have to change the box
cutter. Generous coupling space due to the box depth of 57
mm and the square bottom. Available with flexible or rigid double stubs in two directions, shielded and provided with locking
tabs and sealings. Handles both single and double boards.

Renovation of existing electric installations
You can just as eaily renovate older electric installations as
new ones. In old installations you use a shielding kit, in new
ones you use shielded boxes.

Nobody knows exactly how electric and magnetic fields
influence us. But why puzzle? Bu using an earthed shielding
you will reduce the fields around socket outlets by 98% and
around switches by 94%.

Many want to be halogen-free
The Multifix family is!
P89272
Why all this sudden talk about halogens? What are they exactly? And why did
Schneider Electric as early as in 2004 stop using flame retardants containing
halogens?
We would like to tell you more about this. Read more on the next page!
20
What are halogens?
Halogens are formed when certain elements are being mixed. They are
fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine. One by one, in small quantities and
in their natural spots, these salts and minerals do no harm. On the contrary, they are essential for various chemical processes in the earth crust
and in the oceans. But ever since halogens came into use as flame retardants in electrical products, their injurious effects have become ovious.
Much like lead, halogens are absorbed and stored by all living organisms,
and they are decomposed just as slowly and are extremely toxic.
Certificate
All boxes are tested and approved acc. to the
SEMKO standard for halogen-free materials.
EN50267-2-2:1999.
Why is it dangerous?
Experiments on animals show that bromated flame retardants may have
an effect on sex hormones and thyroxine. As a result, metabolic disturbance, learning difficulties, deteriorated memory functions and injuries to
the liver, the skin and the central nervous system may arise. Before 1960
halogens were not in use, and studies have shown that people had no
PBDE (halogens) in their blood at that time. But today the PBDE content
is doubled every 5 years in both human beings and wild animals.
For us 100% halogen-free material applies!
We take you, your health and our environment just as seriously as we do
the products that we produce and sell. Therefore, Schneider Electric decided as early as in 2004 to stop using halogen-containing flame retardants
with immediate effect. Other companies have chosen to phase out their
use.

Mounting instruction
Quick and easy installations in fire-classified walls and ceilings
The Multifix Fire box is type approved as a
fire-classified box, since it is provided with a fireproof bottom plate that expands when the heat
generation is intense, thus forming an insulation
against the fire centre. Therefore, you don’t have
to make special adjustments in the wall/ceiling
to keep the fire classification.
It can’t get quicker and easier than that!
Multifix Fire – the easy way to keep up the fire classification
Min. 200 mm
Installation of Multifix Fire boxes in a fire-classified wall EI60.
P105671
The Multifix Fire apparatus and junction boxes are
approved for installations in fire-classified walls
according to EI30, EI60 and EI90.
The Multifix Fire ceiling boxes are approved for
installations in fire-classified ceilings according to EI30
and EI60.
Installation of a Multifix Fire ceiling box with fire-classification EI30.
P105670
Installations in ceilings
Multifix Fire box installed in a wall EI60 with a board fixing
and a beam fixing respectively.
Installations in walls
Boxes provided with fire plate can either be fixed with a
beam fixing or with board fixings for 70 mm, 95 mm or
120 mm beams between opposite boards.
Boxes installed on either side of the wall should be
placed at a relative distance of at least 200 mm.
A cut-out for the c/c 60 mm apparatus/junction box
must not exceed 74 mm, and for the c/c 67 mm junction
box it must not exceed 86 mm. The cut-outs should be
made with a hole saw and after-treatment of the drill
hole is not allowed.
The apparatus/junction box should preferably be
placed in the centre of the drill hole.
ISC01543_09-2010_EN
Approved for all occurring beam constructions with a
surface layer made of fire-classified material.
A cut-out for the ceiling box with a c/c 70 mm suspension must not exceed 86 mm, and for the ceiling box
with a c/c 78 mm suspension it must not exceed 95
mm. The cut-outs should be made with a hole saw and
after-treatment of the drill holes is not allowed.
The ceiling box should preferably be placed in the
centre of the drill hole.

Electric and magnetic fields
Electromagnetic fields include the two elements electric and magnetic fields. They
usually appear together, but they can be separated and they have specific characteristics that differ in many respects.
Both electric and magnetic fields appear naturally. Examples of natural presence are
geomagnetic fields and electric fields occurring before a thunderstorm. These two
phenomena exist from time immemorial and as far as we know it they are not
injurious to man.
The difference between the natural fields and those created by man is that the
natural fields are static, i.e. they always have the same direction, whereas fields
generated by alternating voltage with a frequency of 50 Hz, change direction 100
times per second. They are called low-frequency electric and magnetic alternating
fields and these are the ones mainly discussed as far as fields in buildings are
concerned.
Electric fields
Electric fields are stated in the unit volt per metre (V/m) and depend on the difference
in tension and on the distance between two objects. Thus, there is no need for an
appliance to be turned on in order to generate an electric field; the mere connecting
of the plug to the wall socket will suffice.
Electric fields cannot penetrate the human body, the charge stays in the skin. Most
building materials can also provide a sufficient shield against electric fields. The best
shielding effect is obtained from a conductive material, for instance a thin metal foil
or a metal net that is connected to earth.
Magnetic fields
Magnetic fields are created where electric current is flowing through a conductor and
are stated in the unit tesla (T). Since tesla is a very large unit, a millionth part (µT,
micro-tesla) or a thousand millionth part (nT, nano-tesla) are usually preferred when
stating magnetic fields.
The force of the magnetic field depends on the amperage, on the distance from the
object, and on the geometry of the object. The decrease of the field is slower with an
increasing distance from a long and straight conductor, like an electric cable, than
from a concentrated source, like a transformer or a clock-radio. At a distance of one
metre, a stand-alone conductor originates a magnetic field of 0.2 µT (200nT) for
each ampere flowing through it.
Unlike the electric fields, the magnetic fields are very difficult to shield off. They pass
unhindered through most common materials, including the human body.
One way to reduce the exposure would be to let two equally large but counterdirectional fields cancel one another out. Two adjacent conductors of the same
amperage in both directions would each produce a magnetic field of the same size
but in the opposite direction to each other, which theoretically would result in no
magnetic field at all.
Thus, where the electric distribution mains are working as they should, i.e. the
current that comes in equals the return current, the installations cause no or low
magnetic fields. Unfortunately the current may sometimes find other ways back than
through the return wire, which results in so called vagabond currents.
Vagabond currents
The Swedish electric distribution mains are constructed as a so called four-wire
system, with three phases plus a joint neutral and protective conductor. If the casing
of an electric appliance should become live, the intention is that the current should
go back via the protective earth and the neutral conductor of the mains rather than
through a human being touching the appliance. The water, the sewage and the
district heating power systems are also normally earth protected in order to avoid
similar accidents.
Since the return current and the protective earth share a conductor in the four-wire
system, there is a possibility for the return current to choose its way back. The
current always takes the easiest way, so if there is a higher resistance in the ordinary
mains than in the water pipes via protective earth, a considerable part of the return
current can take the wrong way back. This results in two problems. Firstly magnetic
fields are generated around the water pipes, where they should not exist at all, and
secondly the phase current in the cables is no longer balanced by an equally large
return current, which also results in increased magnetic fields.
The currents that find other ways back than through the neutral conductors are
called vagabond currents. The operating voltage of vagabond currents is often too
low to be dangerous in itself, but the currents create magnetic fields where they
should not exist.

Technical information
Vagabond currents (cont.)
In a five-wire system the neutral and the protective conductor have been separated,
and the return current has no other choice but to return through the neutral conductor. Water pipes and other earth-connected equipment are dead, as they should be,
and since phase and return current are equal, the magnetic fields around water
pipes will essentially cancel each other out.
Source: Boverket. Förbättrad elmiljö vid nybyggnad (Improved electrical environment in new buildings).
Limit values
Boverket. God elmiljö från början (Good electrical environment from the start).
The former “National Building Administration” has introduced the recommended
values of 0.2 µT and 10 V/m that are used in most situations. These values have
rather been based on what can be achieved with a reasonable amount of effort than
on what has been medically demonstrated.
The Principle of Precaution
The Swedish authorities Arbetarskyddsstyrelsen (the Board for Occupational Safety
and Health), Boverket (the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning),
Elsäkerhetsverket (the National Electrical Safety Board), Socialstyrelsen (the
National Board of Health and Welfare) and Statens Strålskyddsinstitut (the National
Institute of Radiation Protection) have jointly made an evaluation of the conditions
involved in introducing limit values of electric and magnetic fields. They established
the fact that the prevailing research findings do not justify the introduction of limit
values or other imperative measures. They are of the opinion, however, that a certain
amount of precaution would not be out of place, since harmful effects cannot be
ruled out.
Therefore, the above mentioned authorities recommend the following principle of
precaution:
”If measures to generally reduce the exposure can be taken at reasonable costs and
other consequences, the aim should be to reduce fields that strongly differ from what
can be seen as normal in the environment in question. When it comes to new electric
plants and buildings the aim should, already at the planning stage, be to design and
locate them so as to limit the exposure.”
Limitation of electric fields
By using shielded apparatus and junction boxes from the Schneider Electric system,
in combination with shielded electric wiring conduits from Protec System and
devices from Eljo El-San, a very good shield against electric fields is obtained.
The shielded boxes with accessories have been developed and tested in combination with the device series Trend, El-San and with wiring conduits from Protec
System.
The tests of the system have been carried out at the EMC-Centre at Luleå Technical
University. The results are shown in report 20056709 (Internal ID-No.).
The assembly of the system creates a continuous shielded layer that catches the
electric field induced in the cables and conveys it to the boxes. From the box the draining wire forwards the field to the earth connection.
The boxes and the conduits both have an external shielding layer, which in combination with shielded devices and a shielded cover provides a shield against the electric
field in all directions.
Below the results from measurements of the electric field are shown, in a comparison between an unshielded installation and an installation using Schneider Electric
Multifix shielded boxes, Eljo El-San switches and conduits from Protec System. The
measurements have been carried out in different directions around the box at a
distance of 30 cm.
Limitation of magnetic fields
Twisted single-insulated wire is recommended to reduce magnetic fields.
To reduce vagabond currents a five-wire system is recommended.
