T
his IST ignition system
is the first system for
V-twins to actively protect
the engine from the destructive
effects of knock, better known
as detonation. Simply put,
detonation is violent, uncontrolled
combustion that can destroy
engine components with intense
heat & mechanical stress.
Fuel quality, cylinder pressure,
combustion chamber design and ignition timing
are the major factors that contribute to knock. By
adjusting ignition timing knocking can be eliminated.

he intelligent spark technology system
accomplishes just that. The computerized
ecu-module integrates data from sensors that
other ignition systems do not use. The ist module
monitors the crank position sensor, cam position
sensor, map sensor, cylinder head temperature
sensor and an exclusive knock sensor that actually
detects detonation while the engine runs. This knock
sensor allows the ecu to automatically adjust ignition
timing to eliminate knock whenever it occurs.
I
n addition, this system
retains a memory of those
conditions & automatically
adjusts timing to prevent
it when those conditions
reoccur. On the other hand,
when conditions allow for
increased ignition timing,
the system will advance
timing as far as possible
without causing the engine
to knock. So, in effect, the system is writing a
custom ignition map for that motor. This ignition
map results in optimized power & fuel economy
while protecting the engine from the damaging
detonation. The beauty of the IST system is that if
ignition requirements change or if a lower grade of
fuel is introduced, the system automatically make
the necessary timing changes to avoid detonation
& possible engine damage. Should you change
cams, install a stroker or big bore kit or make
other modifications, the system will adjust to the
ignition requirements of the engine!
