Statement of The former Blue Trail Garage has landmark, histoirical association, research, rarity and
Significance: representative significance. The garage is an early commercial building in Uralla that retains
a use relative to transport. It is historically linked to the ‘Blue Trail’ route from Adelaide to
Brisbane and the era of motoring throughout the 20th century Visually prominent on the
crest of the hill at an entry gateway into Uralla. It is a rare building as it still retains the name
'Blue Trail'. Establishment of the name is representative of the move by a motoring
association to establish a motoring trail identified by the colour blue.
Historical Notes The former Blue Trail Garage was originally built in about 1864 as a retail store for Mr
or Provenance: Kirkwood whose flour mill was located further down the hill at the rear.
The Uralla Council was informed in September 1921 by the Good Roads Association that it
was proposed to ‘blaze the main road from Adelaide to Brisbane’. From Albury to the border,
the road was to become ‘The Blue Trail’. A blue mark was to be affixed to telegraph poles
and other prominent landmarks along the route. Council decided to investigate costs
involved.
Norman Low was proprietor of the Blue Trail Garage in June 1922. Early in February 1929
Norman Low advertised that he had sold his business to Mr. K.F. Fearby. He thanked the
public for their support over the past seven years. At the same time, K.F. Fearby advertised
that he would retain the Blue Trail garage staff. In November 1930, Fearby advertised as a
car agent for Essex, Hudson Auburn, Austin and Marmon.
By October 1937, the Blue Trail Garage was conducted by Low and Donoghue. The garage

was an agent for Dodge cars and trucks. Low and Donoghue still advertised the business in
February 1952.
In June 1965, Frank Rowe celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary the appointment of the
country as official Ford dealer for Armidale and District. After World War Two, a branch was
established in Guyra. Mr Jack Donoghue who had for a number of years owned and
conducted the Blue Trail Garage at Uralla decided to join forces with Frank Rowe Limited.
Jack Donoghue became a Director of the new company and his brother Peter was appointed
manager. In June 1965, Mr Peter Donoghue was still manager and had been with the
garage for over ten years.

Statement of An important residual wool store façade using the regionally iconic ‘Armidale blue’ bricks
Significance: erected circa 1918 for local wool traders. The contrasting brickwork, in this case as yellow
dental capping bricks, was used often in religious buildings of this era and this façade
demonstrates the inter-changeability of masonry decoration between commercial and
religious masonry structures. Social significance arsises from the relationship that developed
between the pastoralist and wool buyer as the wool was brought to town at the end of the
shearing season. This small wool buying industry provides the opportunity to research each
similar business that was once found in every country town. The business is representative
of the development of small businesses to meet the needs of the wool industry.
Historical Notes Traditionally the wool trade and wool industry from the late 19th and throughout the 20th
or Provenance: century needed brokers to act between the producer and shipping agents. This building
demonstrates how smaller wool stores met the needs of local graziers but whose demise
arose due to changing global economics and corporatisation dealing with the wool clip.

Statement of The bank is significant in Bridge streetscape for its imposing stature and as evidence of the
Significance: economic development of Uralla and the banking history of NSW. It demonstrates the
importance placed by banks on constructing substantial and well-designed buildings
throughout NSW and ensuring that the bank manager and his family lived amongst the rural
communities, in this case, a good representative and well detailed example in the Inter-war
Mediterranean style. The building has landmark and streetscape significance because of its
location in relationship to the main street and surrounding businesses. Constructed from
1939 to 1940, it is an example of the interwar functionalist architecture. Comparisons can be
made of other buildings constructed throughout New England and Northwest during the
1930s; for example, the Bank of NSW in Armidale. The closure of the Bank of NSW is
representative of the banking policy developed from the 1980s to close banks and withdrew
banking staff from rural communities. The bank has landmark, streetscape, historical
association, social and representative significance.
Historical Notes In December 1938, the manager of the NSW Bank announced that a new bank and
or Provenance: residence would be constructed between Mr E. Copas’ office and the Imperial Hotel. The
bank and residence was to cost some ₤5000.
In February 1939 Uralla Council approved an application for improvements to the proposed
new Bank of NSW building. It was not until August 1939 that Uralla Council noted that the
land was transferred from W.J. Wales, proprietor of the Imperial Hotel, to the bank. The
Bank of NSW opened its new premises in June 1940 and the bank moved from the former
McCrossin residence on the eastern side of the street. Once Westpac moved from the
building in the 1990s the National Bank moved into the building.

The NSW Bank (Westpac) building was later taken over by the National Bank. The National
Bank of Australasia was formed in Victoria in 1858 with early growth in the urban and rural
areas of Victoria and South Australia. Gradually it expanded and absorbed a number of
other banking institutions in Australia; Colonial Bank of Australasia taken over in 1918; Bank
of Queensland in 1922; the Queensland National Bank in 1948 and the Ballarat Company in
1955. In 1981 the Bank emerged with the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney to form
the National Australia Bank.
The Bank of NSW used this buildling. It opened an agency attached to the Armidale Branch
in leased premises on 4 December 1871 although the exact location is unknown. In 1872 it
leased premises from John McCrossin in Armidale Street and in 1874 the agency was
converted to a full branch. In September 1909 a new banking chamber, designed by
architect A. Allen of Waverley, was completed and in 1917 electric light was installed. In
1946 the Bank sold that premises to Uralla Pictures Ltd. It was in September 1938 that the
Bank of New South Wales bank manager announced the building of new premises in Uralla,
and in December 1938 a new bank and residence, at a cost of₤5000, to be constructed
between Mr E. Copas’ office and the Imperial Hotel (45 Bridge St). In February 1939 Uralla
Council approved an application for improvements to the proposed new Bank of NSW
building. The Council notes in August 1939 the land was transferred from W.J. Wales,
proprietor of the Imperial Hotel to the bank. The bank opened its new premises in June
1940. The Bank of NSW building (renamed Westpac) vacated the building in the 1980s. It
was then used by the National Bank before being converted to a residence.

Further Comments:
Criteria a) The bank is significant in the economic development of Uralla and demonstrates the
important of agricultural produce to banking during the mid 20th century. It demonstrates the
importance placed by banks on constructing substantial buildings throughout NSW and
ensuring that the bank managers and families lived in substantial accommodation amongst
the rural communities.
Criteria b) Historic associations with service provided by banking staff and manager to the residents of
a small rural town. The bank manager and his family lived with the community and played a
significant economic and social role in the community.
Criteria c) The building has landmark and streetscape significance because of its location in
relationship to the main street and surrounding businesses. Constructed from 1939 to 1940,
it is an example of the interwar functionalist architecture.
Research significance arises from the architectural detail of the building typical of the late
1930’s period inter-war functional style that provided a combined bank and manager’s
residence. Comparative studies could be made of other bank buildings completed in country
towns during this period; for example, the Bank of NSW in Armidale and the National Bank in

Comparative studies could be made of other bank buildings completed in country towns
during this period; for example, the Bank of NSW in Armidale and the National Bank in Guyra
Criteria f)
This building is a rare purpose built bank of this style in Uralla.
Criteria g) The bank is representative of the bank’s action to consolidate the economic development of
a small rural town by providing an essential banking service. It is representative of the Bank
of NSW’s intention to construct buildings during the Great Depression period. It
demonstrates how the Bank of NSW closed its doors during the period of economic
rationalism which reduced banking services in country towns and how the National Bank took
the building over and continued its services.

Significance: the New England Highway. It is a fine early inn/store that was protected by an earlier
conservation order. It has considerable social significance as the Uralla community fought to
ensure the building survived, and it remains a symbol of community solidarity. It retains
ooiginal cedar windows and doors, and a re-shingled roof. The building continues to be a
major contribution in the Uralla commercial precinct.
Historical Notes Built 1859-60 as an inn by John Kennedy, but never licensed. John Stoker, a tinsmith,
or Provenance: operated his business there from 1905, and then his son, Reg (Reginald Aubrey Stoker 19061978), ran a clothing shop. In 1980, the then new owner sought to demolish part of the
structure, but the NSW Heritage Council issued a Preservation Order to prevent this. Within
the Uralla community a fierce debate erupted, and went on for years. Given all the "bullets"
that were fired and all the hold-ups, the new Bushranger Motel is aptly named! In 1983 a
boarded up fireplace in the then derelict building yielded up a "treasure chest" of memorabilia
about the Stoker family. "Corporal Cecil Stoker", an exhibition at McCrossin's Mill Museum,
tells the moving story. Converted to restaurant in 1990s including removal of internal walls
and roof being re-shingled.

Significance: premises surviving from the beginning of the 20th century, and retains its original timber shop
front with side of its inset entry. It is representative of the large number of buildings once
found in country towns, many of which since destroyed by fire and local councils insistence
on new buildings being constructed of fire retardant materials from the 1920s. Architecturally
the building complements the surrounding brick businesses built between the 1870s to the
1930s. The building has streetscape, historical association, social and cultural significance,
rarity and representative significance.
Historical Notes In December 1904, G. Gillis of Barnden’s Boarding House called tenders for the erection of a
or Provenance: weatherboard shop in Armidale Street. J.P. Henry won the contract to construct the building
at a cost of ₤280. The Uralla Times, 21 December 1904 stated that ‘the design is somewhat
similar to the Uralla Cycle Works'.
This timber building has served as a tobacconist, billiard establishment and hairdressers.
Completed in March 1905 by Uralla builder J.P. Henry, the timber building measured 46 feet
by 24 feet. It included a billiard room 30ft. by 24ft as well as a hairdressing saloon and a fruit
shop, each measuring 7 feet by 11 feet. The structure was covered with a lantern roof with
skylights to allow for maximum light. At the time of its opening, it was light by acetylene gas.
Generally timber shops in main shopping centres have been destroyed by fire or replaced by
brick buildings constructed as a result of local government policy requiring the use of fire
retardant materials from the 1920s.
