SECTION 15781 – SPLIT DX A/C & HEAT PUMP EQUIPMENT
PART 1 - GENERAL

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
A.
The extent of work is shown on drawings and in schedules, and by the requirements
of this section.
B.
The types of units required for this project include split DX air conditioner and heat
pump systems.
QUALITY ASSURANCE
A.
Manufacturers: Firms regularly engaged in manufacture of split DX air conditioners,
of types, sizes and capacities required, whose products have been in satisfactory
use in similar service for not less than 5 years.
B.
Installer: A firm with at least 3 years of successful installation experience on
projects with packaged room air-conditioning units.
C. Codes and Standards: The following codes and standards apply to all or part of the
products or procedures covered in this specification. Individual items of the
specification may refer more specifically to applicable sections of these codes or
standards.

SUBMITTALS
A.
In Accordance with 15010.
B.
Submit manufacturer's technical product data, including rated capacities or selected
model clearly indicated, weights, furnished specialties and accessories; and
installation and start-up instructions.
PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
A.
Deliver units in factory-fabricated protective containers.
B.
Handle units carefully to avoid damage to components, enclosures and finish. Do
not install damaged components; replace and return damaged components to unit
manufacturer.
C. Store units in clean dry place and protect from weather and construction traffic.

WARRANTY
A.
Provide with a five year compressor and aluminum coil warranty in addition to the
manufacturer's standard one year equipment warranty.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01
AIR-HANDLING UNIT (AHU)
A.
Provide DX air handling unit(s) of the size, model, and capacity indicated on drawings.
B.
General: Indoor, direct-expansion, AHU. Unit shall be shipped complete with
cooling coil, heating coil, fan, fan motor, piping connectors, and electrical controls.
C. Unit Cabinet: Cabinet shall be constructed of G-90 galvanized steel, phosphatized,
and finished with baked acrylic enamel paint. Bases, corner posts and tops shall be
minimum 18 gauge. Access panels shall be minimum 20 gauge.
D. Cabinet Insulation: The interior of the cabinet shall be thermally insulated with 1-inch
thick foil-faced, rigid fiberglass with a minimum R-value of 4.2. The insulation and
adhesive shall meet NFPA 90A requirements for flame spread and smoke generation.
E.
Evaporator Coil: Evaporator coil shall be copper tube with aluminum fins. Fins shall
be firmly bonded to the tubes by mechanical expansion. Coils shall be drainable and
have non-trapping circuits. Coils shall be factory leak tested.
F.
Condensate Drain Pan: Unit shall have factory-installed, double-sloped condensate
drain pan fabricated from plastic or stainless steel. Bottom of drain pan shall be
insulated to prevent condensation. Condensate drain connection(s) shall be minimum
3/4 inch and shall have fittings exposed to the outside of the cabinet. Pan and drains
shall comply with ASHRAE Standard 62-2001.
G. Blower: Blower shall be a forward-curved, centrifugal type, and shall be statically and
dynamically balanced.
H. Motors: Motors shall have sealed and permanently lubricated ball bearings, and shall
have inherent overload protection. Fan motor shall be variable speed.
2.02

Electric Heater: Provide factory electric heat as scheduled.
J.
Filters: Unit shall have factory-supplied pleated disposable 30% efficient filters
installed at the air inlet.
AIR-COOLED HEAT PUMPS (HP)
A.
Provide air-cooled heat pump unit(s) of the size, model, and capacity indicated on
drawings.
B.
Unit shall be matched to coil and capacity of associated air handling unit.

C. The units shall be complete with all factory controls, refrigerant piping, refrigerant
accessories, and refrigerant valving indicated and as necessary to achieve the
function specified on the drawings and schedules, and under this Section.
D. Unit Cabinet: Cabinet shall be constructed of galvanized steel, phosphatized, and
finished with baked acrylic enamel paint. All exterior hardware shall be stainless or
aluminized steel for corrosion resistance. Fully weatherproof for outdoor installation.
Openings provided for power and refrigerant connections. Panels removable to
provide access for servicing.
E.
Compressor: Compressor shall be a scroll hermetic type with crankcase heater.
Motors shall be equipped with internal overheat-overload protection.
F.
Condenser Coils: Condenser coils shall be copper tube with aluminum fins. Fins
shall be firmly bonded to the tubes by mechanical expansion. Coils shall be drainable
and have non-trapping circuits. Coils shall be factory leak tested.
G. Condenser Fan(s): Condenser fan(s) shall be propeller type arranged for vertical
discharge. Fans shall be statically and dynamically balanced, each fan driven by
separate fan motor. Each fan shall be protected by a heavy gauge, vinyl-coated fan
guard.
H. Condenser Fan Motor(s): Condenser fan motor(s) shall be direct drive and have
sealed and permanently lubricated ball bearings, and shall have inherent overload
protection.
2.03
I.
Refrigerant Circuit: Included in the refrigerant circuit shall be condenser fan cycling
head pressure control, accumulator, filter-drier, high pressure safety control (manualreset), low pressure safety control/loss of charge protector (auto-reset), hot gas
bypass valve with solenoid and dual gauge connections for high and low pressure
readings. A 24-volt pump down solenoid valve is shipped loose with the condensing
unit and is to be field installed in the liquid line as close to the air handler as possible.
Where reheat coil is used, the valve shall be factory installed in the air handler. The
refrigerant circuit shall be factory charged for shipment with dry nitrogen that can be
vented to the atmosphere.
J.
Electric Controls: Internally wired controls shall include the compressor anti-short
cycle timer, fan and compressor motor contactors or starters and 24v transformer
mounted in the sheet metal control panel. The 24-volt control circuit shall include a
low voltage terminal board.

A.
Provide split ductless ac unit(s) of the size, model, and capacity indicated on
drawings.
B.
Unit shall be matched to coil and capacity of associated air handling unit.
C. The units shall be complete with all factory controls, refrigerant piping, refrigerant
accessories, and refrigerant.
D. Unit shall be installed with factory wall-mounted controller.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01
INSTALLATION OF AIR-COOLED HEAT PUMP UNITS
A.
Set HP on 6-inch thick reinforced concrete pad on ground outside building in
location shown on plans. Concrete pad shall extend 6 inches beyond each side of
unit. Set unit level and bolt down. Maintain manufacturer recommended clearances
for proper air circulation and service.
B.
Provide all refrigerant piping complete with all fittings, valves, refrigerant specialties.
The supports for the refrigerant lines shall be installed in a manner to maintain
minimum line vibration.
C. Provide all control wiring for unit operation as required. The Electrical Contractor will
furnish and install power wiring to all motors (including disconnect switches furnished
under the heating and cooling contract).
D. Installation shall be in accordance with refrigerant practices and shall conform to the
manufacturer's instructions.
3.02
REFRIGERANT PIPING INSTALLATION
A.
Provide all refrigerant piping complete with all fittings, valves, refrigerant
specialties. The supports for the refrigerant lines shall be installed in a manner to
maintain minimum line vibration.
B.
The refrigerant piping shall be sized by the manufacturer's recommendations,
submitted and approved by the Engineer.
C. The refrigerant piping shall be installed as indicated on the drawings. Provide
refrigerant pipe routing as indicated on plans. Installation shall be in accordance with
refrigerant practices and shall strictly conform to the manufacturer’s instructions and
recommendations
D. All tubing shall remain capped until assembled.
E.
All equipment and piping shall be maintained absolutely dry and clean during
handling and assembly.
F.
Flux and solder, and scale if any, shall be thoroughly cleaned from the tube.

G. Tubing shall be filled with nitrogen while soldering to prevent oxidation.
H. The piping shall be carefully jointed with silver solder and completely leak tested
with a Halide torch or approved refrigerant leak tester.
I.
The suction piping shall have an oil trap and the suction line shall pitch down in the
direction of flow.
J.
Charging valves, expansion valve, solenoid valve, back seating type service valves,
and any other valves necessary for the safe and proper operation of the
refrigerating system shall be included in the installation. Seal caps shall be used on
all refrigerant valves.
K.
Should any of the above valves be furnished as a part of the manufacturer's
equipment, additional valves serving the same purpose will not be required.
L.
A suitable refrigerant filter-dryer which can be serviced without breaking the inlet
and outlet refrigerant connections shall be installed in the liquid line on the supply
side of the solenoid valve.
M. See Section 15250 for insulation on liquid and suction line.
