Edge expertly shaved, otherwise well-centered, good very fine, of the highest rarity and the greatest historical importance. £8000-10,000 This is perhaps the earliest Islamic commemorative coin. It appears to be the only occasion where the word piruj/peroz is seen on an example of ‘Ubayd Allah’s otherwise abundant coinage, most of which was struck in Basra where he served as governor of Iraq for the Caliph Yazid I b. Mu’awiya. The accession of Yazid I caused strong divisions within the early Muslim community. Several very important leaders refused to give him their allegiance, the most significant of whom were the Prophet’s grandson al-Husayn bin ‘Ali and ‘Abd Allah al-Zubayr, later to be the counter-caliph. Although al-Husayn was advised to remain in Makka he set out to lead his followers in Iraq. Yazid responded by ordering ‘Ubayd Allah, his governor of Iraq, to deal firmly with the anticipated arrival of al-Husayn. This challenge resulted in the tragedy of Kerbala on the 10th of Muharram 61h, when al-Husayn and most of his followers met a bloody end, thus sealing the division between Sunni and Shi’a Islam, which lasts until this day. Kirman-Nar is usually read as Narmashir, a small and insignificant town south of Bamm in eastern Iran. Some have questioned the reading of this mint because more plausible alternatives could be deduced from the Pahlawi script. Album suggests that the suffix could be read as WAR, which in his opinion and that of this cataloguer could locate the mint in the important town of Bardasir, which was then capital of the province. 13 ‘Ubayd Allah b. Good very fine and extremely rare. £4000-5000 This Dirham was struck by order of Zubayda bint Abi Ja’far b. al-Mansur, wife of Harun al-Rashid and mother of Muhammad al-Amin, at a palace compound probably on an island near Baghdad. It is, in all likelihood, the earliest coin struck by authority of a woman in the history of Islam. The issuance of this coin is directly connected to the matter of the caliphal succession. In 175h al-Rashid designated his second, but purely Hashimid, son Muhammad al-Amin as his heir. In the succeeding years it became clear that his eldest, but slave-born son, ‘Abdallah al-Ma’mun, was better suited to rule than his younger brother. In 183h al-Rashid therefore designated al-Ma’mun as the second heir to the throne. While Zubayda had been a kindly stepmother to al-Ma’mun, her over-arching ambition was to see that al-Amin, the only heir to her body, became caliph after al-Rashid’s death. One can easily imagine that this imperious and powerful lady determined to make her position unmistakably clear by issuing this coin as a sharp reminder that she was the mother of the heir. 176 177 178 179 180 181 182 Yazid, Fals, Sijistan 178h, 2.77g (Lowick 811; A 335). Extremely fine and, extremely rare. £600-800 As Miles states in his note on the Dirham of Muhammad b. Bayhas, Dimashq 198h, “The numismatic record …. is valuable elaboration of the somewhat vague accounts in the chronicles …. about Damascus at the turn of the (3rd) century hijri”. Miles was speaking about the series of Dirhams struck by Ibn-Bayhas in Damascus between 198h and 209h. Jund was the title given to a military district. It would appear that for a time during the year 200h, while Ibn-Bayhas held the city of Damascus, his power was being challenged elsewhere by the otherwise unknown ‘Umara. The name ‘Umara is clear on this coin, but it appears to be missing or illegible on Lowick’s piece and the name of his father cannot be read on either coin with any degree of certainty. al-Amin, Silver Dirham, Ma’din Bajunays 194h, with Governor Da’ud, 2.37g (A 221.3b). Generally about fine and extremely rare, a very interesting group. (lot) £30,000-35,000 A tribal coinage of this kind probably met an economic need for small change in an area chronically short of cash, and the phrase li-ahl ... would have established it as being public property rather than privately owned by a tribe or clan. One of the earliest Islamic mints to be established on the shores of the Arabian Gulf was that of al-Bahrayn, a province which encompassed the island of Bahrain and the mainland areas around Jubayl and Qatif in eastern Sa‘udi Arabia. Most of the coins are rather crude because they were usually struck on thin flans by inexpert workmen, and a considerable number are either double-struck or overstruck on earlier issues. This is an important group of coins which provides a fresh insight into the monetary history of the Arabian peninsula. This hoard was acquired by an ARAMCO employee working in Saudi Arabia in the late 1950s.
