It looks like winter weather has returned with a
vengeance! Along with the increasingly brisk and
snowy weather, late November also brought two
additional topics of high interest around Mount
Markham (I don't just mean Thanksgiving
turkey!) – the public hearing regarding our
impending capital project vote and the Genesis
Group `Celebration of Education' event.
On November 19th, we held the first of two
capital project informational sessions/hearings
in the high school auditorium. This was a great
opportunity for our community members to
hear directly from the architects and financial
advisors regarding the December 9th project
vote. We would like to thank the staff and community members who came out to learn more
about the key elements of the project, and

Guidance News
Applications for the Clark Foundation Scholarship will
soon be available in the Guidance Office. All seniors at
Mount Markham High School will be eligible to apply
and the Clark Foundation will select recipients of the
scholarship. Students will be encouraged to complete
a draft application which they will need to fill out in its
entirety. We highly recommend that students be
prepared to write several drafts of their essay as well
as meet with an English teacher for suggestions. The
final essay needs to be free from spelling, grammar,
and punctuation errors. Students then need to meet
with their Guidance Counselor to go over their draft
application. Like last year, the Clark Foundation would
like these application submitted online through the
Community Force website. All of the seniors will soon
be invited to a brief meeting to go over the application
process as well as deadline dates.
In other news, seniors should be well into, if not
already through, the college application process. Many
colleges have application deadlines in January. Once
an application arrives in the Guidance Office, it takes
several business days to prep it for mailing. If teacher
recommendations are not ready, the process can take
even longer. Missing a college application deadline is
never a good thing. Please check with your child to
make sure that s/he is on track to meet application
deadlines.
Students who submit applications on-line must
remember to inform the guidance staff of their
application. There is a short form in the guidance
office that students should complete after they have
applied.
Beginning in January, seniors will be eligible to apply
for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The web address for the online FAFSA application is
www.fafsa.ed.gov. It is recommended that you fill out a
“FAFSA on the web” worksheet prior to completing the
online application. This worksheet can be printed from
the FAFSA website but be sure to print the 2015-2016
version. Online submission of the FAFSA itself can begin
any time after January 1st. Income tax returns do not
have to be started or completed in order to fill out the
form. Last year’s tax forms, a current bank statement,
and a current paycheck stub will provide most of the
information you need.
Please be aware that the process of applying for
financial aid is free. If you are on a website that is
charging you to submit the FAFSA, log off. There are
some sites with addresses very similar to the above site
which charge for what you can do for free.
While this is a busy college application time for seniors,
we encourage juniors to be looking at colleges now.
Although the internet is a great place to start, it should
not replace actual campus visits. Don’t get caught
scrambling in your senior year. Use February, April, and
summer break to get your visits completed. It is much
more valuable to be on a college campus when it is in
session than it is during the quiet months of summer.
Talking to admissions, taking a campus tour, sitting in on
a class, and eating in the dining hall are all options to be
considered for each college visit. The more in-depth the
visit, the better able you are to judge whether the college
fits your needs. Also, developing a relationship with
admissions counselors before you apply indicates to
them that you are interested in the college and could
increase your chance of getting accepted by the college.
Babysitter training
The Mount Markham High School will host the American
Red Cross Babysitter’s Training in the Family & Consumer
Sciences classroom (A-102) from 8am to 1:00pm on
Monday and Tuesday, December 29 & 30, 2014. Trainees should be 11 years of age or older and have submitted a completed registration form and a $45.00 check
payable to Cathie Peck by Friday, December 13, 2014.
The fee includes a 168 page babysitter handbook, Emergency Reference Guide; CD-ROM; certification card; and
class supplies. There is a course limit of 10 students.
Parents should make arrangements to provide transportation for their child.
Babysitters should get a good night’s rest and eat
breakfast before beginning their intensive training.
Dress for comfort and the weather. Some training will
involve working on the floor and the room may be a little
chilly. Be prepared to work with old friends and make
new friends. You will be required to participate in all the
training, even the dreaded chocolate pudding test. To
earn your certification you must demonstrate skills in
the required areas of infant care and first aid. Bring a
pen or pencil and the babysitter’s handbook. There will
be two short breaks (10 and 11:30 am) during the
training. Bring a snack (not candy) to help keep focused and energized. Cell phones are to be turned off
during the training sessions. Trainees may use their
phones during their scheduled breaks.
Take good care of yourself. Trainees must be in attendance on both days. Do not attend the training, if
you are not feeling well. There is no nurse to care for
you and no bus driver to take you home. There will be
no make up dates for trainees who have missed any
portion of the training sessions. Failure to attend ALL
classes will result in the loss of the certification. Every
effort will be made to provide a partial refund for those
who are unable to complete the training.
Contact Cathie Peck at the high school (822-2900)
for additional information on the training. Registration
forms are available in all building offices. They may also
be downloaded from the Resource tab in the American
Red Cross Babysitter’s Training Group on My Big Campus at this link http://www.mybigcampus.com/groups/
