The trip was a collaboration of the school receiving a $75,000 grant through the Laura Bush Library Foundation Gulf Coast Initiative and the Official Kick Off in a Welcome New & Renewing Members partnership with First Book and Scholastic. Secretary Spelling also announced the 2007 Gulf Coast Summer Reading Initiative. Laura Bush was sched- uled to visit the school but was unable due to the horrific tragedy at Virginia Tech on April 16th. Secretary Spelling speaks to Educators & Children reading and that they come back ready to learn in the Fall. In spite of the adversity of Katrina, these students have continued to achieve and excel, recently earning a Level 5 Superior ranking by the State of Mississippi.” In addition, the Gulfview- Charles B. Murphy School will get a new schools in 2008 to make help with overcrowding. They were also a recipient of a new KABOOM playground and a $50,000 grant from the NEC. The Madison County Republican Women are proud to have played a small part in the rebuilding efforts of these schools. Spelling reads to students in Kiln Cathy Wilson, Public Relations Director with the Hancock County Schools was excited to report the Secretary’s visit with the MCRW. They are so proud to have been a part of such a wonderful program and the children are already benefiting! Principal Jan White commented "making things normal again starts with Gulfview-Charles B. Murphy's new library and keeping students' love of reading intact. Let's face it—books are the center of a school." Secretary Spelling writes on the Dept. of Education Website “She couldn't be more right! I hope these books help nurture these students' love for Secretary Spelling & students from Charles B. Inspired by the Republican Platform of 1872, which said: "The Republican Party is mindful of its obligation to the loyal women of America for their noble devotion to the cause of Freedom ...," Republican women’s clubs were off and running. In fact, the oldest such club on record was founded in Salt Lake City in the late 1800s. Hundreds of independent Republican women’s clubs grew up around the nation in the years to come. For example, there were 140 clubs in Indiana alone by the late 1930s. It was in 1938 that Marion Martin, assistant chairman of the Republican National Committee, called a meeting at the Palmer House in Chicago to organize these clubs into a national organization. States in which Republican women’s clubs were organized on a “statewide” basis – with 60 percent of their counties organized – sent delegates and alternates to that meeting with a request to affiliate with such an organization. The delegates adopted rules governing the establishment of a National Federation of Republican Women’s Clubs, with the following purposes: "to foster and encourage loyalty to the Republican Party and the ideals for which it stands to promote education along political lines - to encourage closer cooperation between independent groups and the regular party organization, which are working for the same objectives, namely sound government - to promote an interchange of ideas and experiences of various clubs to the end that the policies which have proven particularly effective in one state may be adopted in another - and to encourage a national attitude and national approach to the problems facing the Republican Party." At the time of NFRW’s founding, three states – Maryland, Virginia, and Alabama – had not even ratified the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution granting suffrage to women. THE PALMER HOUSE, CHICAGOThe NFRW was founded here The campaign of 1936 had reelected Franklin D. Roosevelt over Alf Landon with only two states – Maine and Vermont – going Republican. There were only six Republican governors, 89 Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives, and 16 in the Senate. And yet the National Federation of Republican Women – born in a climate of defeat – grew in size and strength, providing a vehicle for women concerned with the direction of our government. Today, the NFRW consists of approximately 100,000 members in about 1,825 local clubs in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands. The goals of those women who met in Chicago in 1938 continue to be the goals of the NFRW – to encourage women’s participation in the governing of our nation, to elect Republicans to office at all levels, and to promote public awareness of the issues that shape America. Thirty-three national conventions have been held in cities across the nation, with U.S. presidents and vice presidents, homemakers and first ladies, cabinet members and celebrities attending. Presidential candidates never miss these meetings. They know that many of those attending will be delegates to the Republican National Convention or will be instrumental in the delegate selection process. They know that these women are the Party’s grassroots activists. Millions of American women, ages 19 to 90, have helped shape our nation through wartime and peace, through depression and prosperity, through good times and bad – all through the National Federation of Republican Women. Programs such as NFRW’s campaign management schools, women candidate seminars, and polling schools have trained literally thousands of Republican women and men to help elect GOP candidates, and communities throughout the nation have benefited from the volunteer services of NFRW’s Caring for America and Barbara Bush Literacy programs. The Madison County Republican Women are in need of soccer ball donations to ship to our soldiers in Iraq. We will begin collecting soccer balls over the summer and will ship to the soldiers in Iraq in early fall. The Mississippi Federation as well as the National Federation of Republican Women will be tracking how many balls each club ships to Iraq as a 50 state Republican Women project. The Operation We Care will provide the Soccer balls, ball pumps, soccer shoes to help outfit the Iraqi children to play soccer. The Madison County Republican Women have contacted CPT Kevin Wainwright and are working toward shipping the balls in early fall. BG (Ret) James Hesson states “It is far better to have the young Iraqi’s kicking donated soccer balls than being trained to make IED’s. As Iraq gets stabilized we must convince the younger generation that our intentions are honorable and we are friends”. Some of have son’s, daughters or grand children who have played soccer that have outgrown their shoes season after season. Lets put these shoes to good use and help our soldiers. Thank you for your kind words and support. The soccer balls do not have to be inflated. In fact, we prefer that they not be. It makes our soldiers feel good if they can go outside the wire and pass these items out to the children. You can send the boxes to... He, his wife Cherri Roberts Porter and their daughter Cady, currently reside at the Ross Barnett Reservoir. Charles' son Matt Porter, is beginning his own future and keeps his residence in Rankin County. As a citizen of Rankin County and an area builder, Charles Porter is aware of the concerns that face Madison and Rankin Counties. The past several years has shown a large growth with expanding areas and a population boom. Many areas in and around Madison and Rankin Counties are struggling to maintain or adjust its infrastructure. Congested roadways are a particular problem. Meeting the needs of a larger population… Special attention must be given to the education system in these two counties. Attracting qualified teachers and constructing new schools are important to facilitate the influx of new students to keep Madison and Rankin school systems on top. Area law enforcement agencies must also be assisted to meet the demands of an ever growing population. Additional law enforcement officers, state-ofthe-art equipment, and emergency management updates are important issues in assuring our communities remain peaceful and desirable living areas. President George Bush, Charles Porter & Mike Parker Constructing for the future… As a successful business owner of Porter Construction, Inc. since 1984, Charles Porter understands the value of hard work, how to plan well designed communities with its future in mind, manage time and budgets, and obtain desirable results to satisfy the home buyers of Madison and Rankin Counties for today and tomorrow. His ideal has always been to enhance the community with every detail built to endure. He can put this knowledge to work in the Mississippi Senate to lead these two great counties into a well planned, more structured future. I'm running for the State Senate because I want to see District 20 continue its outstanding growth in a manner that is in the best interest of families. I support enforcing Mississippi's immigration laws. * I support quality economic development. * I support the right to bear arms. Page 13 Madison County Republican Women News Meet the Candidate- Bobby Blake-Senate District 20 Mississippi is a great state, and it is getting better all the time. Our economy is growing, and education is improving. We are at a critical crossroads where we must ask ourselves: Can we sustain this growth or must we fall back into the same old rut? Why are we ranked last nationally in so many critical areas, and must we stay there? Having asked myself these same questions, I concluded that we could sustain our momentum and address our problem areas with the right leadership. We need leadership with the passion to fix problems that affect all of us, instead of following the agenda of a small special interest group. We need leadership with the strong desire to help our children learn, instead of giving education lip service and then forgetting about it post election. District 20 has safe communities, but how long will it take before the crime disease infesting parts of Jackson moves our way? Jackson is our Capital City, and all elected officials in the Metro area along with law enforcement and economic development authorities must work together to reclaim our State Capital. Jackson must become our state's pride again. The election primaries are August 7, and on that date I ask for you to vote and make Bobby Blake your District 20 State Senator. • • • • We need leadership that says crime in the Jackson area seriously affects Rankin County, Madison County, Hinds County and the State, instead of sticking our heads in the sand while pointing a finger at our Capital City and saying "It's their problem." So, I chose to run for the Mississippi State Senate District 20. I want to be a part of the solution… on the playing field, not as a spectator. Together let’s become a Mississippi that attracts new businesses and expands old ones. This will create more and better jobs for our children and grandchildren right here in the state. We will not have to watch our children move to other states looking for better jobs and lifestyles. To attract and expand businesses, we must offer quality education statewide. We must improve education for all our children. District 20 is blessed with excellent schools, but can we keep our children in Mississippi if jobs don’t exist when they graduate from high school and college? • • • • • • • • • • Married 36 years to Julie Norris Blake Father of 3 adult children and grandfather of 7 33 years of business management experience Senate District 20 Candidate-Bobby Blake 13 years as small business owner of Blake Publishing, Inc. with wife Julie • Graduate of Jackson Public School System • Graduate of Mississippi State University, College of Business & Industry • Fire Commissioner for the Rankin County Reservoir Fire Department Leader of Work Teams to the Mississippi Gulf Coast after Katrina Organized Habitat for Humanity work teams Past Mentor for Rankin County Human Services Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge Counselor • • • • • • Member of Saint Mark's United Methodist Church • Past Chairperson of Administrative Council St. Mark's UMC • Foreign Missions board member, Salt & Light Honduras Ministry • If you have questions or need more information go to: www.blakeforsenate.com Active member of Methodist Cursillo of Mississippi Community Active member of Mississippi Kairos Prison Ministry Active member and past president of St. Mark's United Methodist Men Past Lay member of the Board of Ministry, Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church Sunday School Teacher Member of Metro Jackson Chamber of Commerce Member of Rankin County Chamber of Commerce Member of Madison County Chamber of Commerce Member of Mississippi Association of REALTORS® Member of Meridian Board of REALTORS®, Inc.
