Talks started about the lighting of the Silverstar Casino in late 2006 with Howard Dembo of Northpoint Architects. Howard had given his brief to Paul Pamboukian, leading lighting designer and owner, of PPA, for the overall appearance and theme for the exterior lighting for casino. Using Howard's inspiration for the satellites on the casino roof from the Ndebele Hat, Paul designed the post tops and boardwalk fittings to reflect this as well. Regent Lighting manufactured the lights as specified by Paul. The post tops are made of laser cut mild steel on 3.8m (mounting height) aluminium poles powdercoated metallic light grey. Lamps used are 150W metal halide HCI G12 warm daylight. Howard really liked the Tower Lights designed and manufactured by Regent Lighting and decided to design light sculptures around these for the entrance to the casino. He came to Regent with his idea to see if they were able to produce something of this nature and Regent agreed to give it a go. Using 3D CAD the sculpture was developed virtually, engaging with the architects constantly to show them what the finished product would look like. The go ahead was given to Regent to put a mock up together and then the actual thing. The total height of the sculptures, including the Tower Light encased inside, is 5.053m by 1.4m wide comprising of a curved outer shield of brushed stainless steel on a mild steel inner frame. There are four of these sculptures. As this was a first for Regent the challenges were vast, not least was keeping external service providers on track to delivery deadline and at the last minute jumping in to actually install the fittings, something that is usually left to the electrical contractor, who in this case was completely unprepared for the complexity of this particular installation. With the opening looming large, the rain not staying away Regent rallied its staff to the rescue and erected the sculptures in record time. The only exterior lights burning bright at the press opening were those supplied by Regent! Having worked on the Braamfontein rejuvenation project Regent was in an ideal position to assist on three new areas: Jewel City, Hillbrow Health Precinct, and Hillbrow, Berea, Yeoville area. Jewel City has been in existence for 17 years occupying 4 city blocks on the eastern side of the city. It comprises of offices and workshops for 300 diamond dealers and manufacturers, including the Diamond Board and Bourse, Diamond Merchant Association, Rough Diamond Master Cutters' Association and the Jewellery Council. Melrose Arch beckoned and just as they were going to move the JDA (Johannesburg Development Agency) stepped in, and together with ApexHi and another private stakeholder, committed millions of Rands to clean up and rejuvenate the area which attracts about 1000 visitors a day mainly to buy cut, polished, unmounted diamonds. Hillbrow Health Precinct, bordered to the north by Kotze and Rissik streets, to the west by Joubert Street, Smit Street to the South and Klein to the East, boasts a number of private and public health facilities: Johannesburg Hospital, Donald Gordon Medical Centre, Park Lane, Brenthurst and Rand Clinics, and Wits Medical School. The JDA's objective in rejuvenating this area is to provide a safe and secure integrated and functional environment with improved pedestrian and traffic access to allow entry to world class education and training facilities and medical health service providers. Mbongeni Ngulube of Gapp Architects worked on both the Jewel City and Hillbrow Precinct projects. For Jewel City he wanted an aesthetically appealing street light instead of what one ordinarily sees and Regent was able to offer him a range of options. He specified the Wave 3 on a 7.5m mounting height poles for the secondary roads and Suns on 6m poles on the island. He also wanted to create an illusion of diamonds having been thrown on the pavement and suggested small in-ground lights. Regent's sales consultant was concerned about vandalism and suggested using mosaic instead. This resulted in the start up of a small business for the fortunate African craftsman that was found to do the job. He in turn hired and trained a small group of staff who now have the opportunity of future work of this nature. JEWEL CITY HILLBROW HEALTH PRECINCT HBY LUMINAIRE For the Hillbrow Health Precinct, lighting was specified for a secure parking area that had been created by demolishing an existing building. Double Jupiter fittings with banner arms on 6m poles were specified. Satin Chrome powder coating was chosen to give this more traditional looking fitting a modern feel. Hillbrow, Berea, Yeoville (HBY) is currently undergoing a facelift that will change the living space of tens of thousands of Southern Africans living in these areas. Street and pedestrian lighting with specifically designed poles are being incorporated into this project, enhancing and rejuvenating the surrounds. Regent Sun 250W HPS street lights and 100W HPS pedestrian lights, designed and developed in South Africa, were selected to achieve the desired lighting effect. As you read this article Regent are creating a number of specialised tree uplighters in conjunction with pedestrian lights to transform Able Rd in Hillbrow. The JDA has committed substantial capital to these projects and we believe that many cities in and around SA will be adopting a similar approach as part of a programme to take back the inner city. Regent Lighting prides itself as a lighting solutions company that is able to enhance urban renewal projects. These developments will do much to change the laager mindset of many South Africans and create an environment for youngPRECINCT and old to enjoy our wonderful heritage for HILLBROW HEALTH generations to come. Incorporating 2 x 24W compact fluorescent lamps, with full cutoff anti-glare baffles, the fittings are unique in South Africa for bridge lighting. Using the original concept as inspiration, Regent has developed a new family of fittings, using energy efficient light sources called the Link Range: wall mounted, bollards and post top versions that can be used to enhance contemporary architecture. 350 50 NEW PRODUCT LINK FITTING 20mm O Hole - Cable Access CONCEPT DRAWING LINK BRIDGE LINK BRIDGE PL26W WALL BRACKET PL36W BOLLARD 55W POST TOP FEATURE REGENT LIGHTING WORKING WITH LED'S Regent Lighting has always prided itself on being on the forefront of technology and incorporating the use of LED's in the product lines is no exception. During 2007 work started in earnest to harness the capabilities of this technology for current and new product. This work was accelerated as a result of a request to use LED's in the exterior aluminium strip lighting of the Breakwater section at the V & A Waterfront, specifically the Bridge, apexes and two entrances. MELROSE BULKHEAD LED's have been around for a while but they are expensive and the light output has to date been limited. However, this technology is developing at an ever increasing rate and in time we will have LED's in street lighting and floodlighting. The energy crisis in South Africa has spurred the increase in enquiries and a range of product is being adapted and designed by Regent for LED's: up/down lights such as Tubo's and Shuttles, in ground fittings, pathway lights and even floodlights. PATHWAY LED STRIP LED With a lamp life of anything between 25000 hours and 50 000 hours, and a low energy consumption, the idea of using LED's in everything is very alluring, however there are several challenges that prevent it from becoming the panacea of all our energy crisis woes. Limited light output and costs are the first disadvantages to deal with. LED's are still very expensive and availability from manufacturers is not predictable because the technology is evolving so quickly that manufacturers and suppliers are hesitant to keep large quantities of stock. The biggest challenge to deal with, and one that is often overlooked, is heat management, which, if not managed correctly will affect the lamp life and colour. Regent has developed a heat sink to fit into housings to absorb the heat and protect the lamps from colour and life deterioration. Notwithstanding the current downsides, the technology developing at such a rate that these will be addressed in time. Increasing demand will bring down prices and the technology will stabilise. For Regent Lighting it is exciting to have something new to work with. Regent will continue to work closely with the top LED suppliers available and develop product that meets the exacting standards and innovation that it is known for. FEATURE INTERNATIONAL DARK SKY ASSOCIATION APPROVES REGENT LUMINAIRES. Scott Davis of the International Dark Sky Association presented a very informative paper at the IESSA Congress last year. He went to great lengths to explain to the delegates the harm we are doing to our skies by not controlling obtrusive light. He showed us many slides that he had taken locally of just how bad the lighting was and the effect it had on our skies. He stressed the importance of us claiming back our clear skies by making people aware of the harm we are doing to the environment. Always at the forefront of innovation, Regent Lighting decided to take the lead and submitted some of its products for Dark Sky approval. This was a time consuming process as all photometrics had to be supplied in electronic format as well as hard copy, so they could be run through the International Dark Skies software to check our compliance. CHALLENGER Regent Lighting is proud to announce that it received the Seal Of Approval for nine of its luminaires, these being: MINI CHALLENGER Challenger, Mini Challenger, Voyager, Mini Voyager, Milano, Sun, Lunar, Tuscan and Jupiter These luminaires all bear the International Dark Sky Association Seal of Approval and can proudly display the logo and are indeed Dark-Sky Friendly. It is believed that this is a first in South Africa. Randal Wahl, MD, Regent Lighting, says: “Having appreciated the importance of clear skies, and given the growth that South Africa has experienced and will continue to enjoy, load shedding or not, policies are needed that will accommodate growth as well as preserving the dark skies. Regent cannot make the policies but being a SABS and TUV ISO 9001:2000 certified company it can use its knowledge and experience to educate clients when they plan new developments.” VOYAGER Randal went on to say that Regent will continue to bring quality products to the market, and will strive to have more of its luminaires approved.
