Editorial
I remember very clearly the first time I ever saw the infinity symbol. It was on the old camera
that we used to take on family holidays. I was soon to learn that infinity did not exist in real life.
Infinity is reserved for mathematics, optics, the heavens, literature perhaps, and religious
people – forever and all time.
These categories certainly don’t include electrical engineering, yet despite this, we have
announced it our mission to produce “Endless possibilities”. We at OBO Bettermann are
convinced that there are always opportunities in our industry. It is these opportunities which we
want to pick up on and bring forward with an open mind. Therein lies our kind of endless
possibilities. Take our products for example. We will be presenting our new Complete Catalogue at Light+Building 2014. When you see it, it may well look almost infinite to you. OBO
offers a complete range in conjunction with perfect support. OBO products and systems create
mechanical and electrical connections – reliably, safely and at the highest level of quality.
Installation speed, the capacity to carry loads, functionality, availability and safety are all very
much in the foreground whenever we develop a new product.
OBO offers endless possibilities in the system solutions it offers. OBO applications are extraordinarily diverse and highly flexible for every single custom solution. Ongoing dialogue with the
trades, with retail and with industry produces endless possibilities for us all in terms of complex
system solutions – for tunnel construction, food production, industrial production, oil and gas
supply, airports and railway stations, shipbuilding, wind power, photovoltaics, power station
construction, biogas plants, data centres, office and administration buildings, hospitals, residential buildings, and sport and event venues.
We as a company also aim to offer endless possibilities – by means of our global OBO
pres-ence, as an employer, and with our OBO Support Plus scheme, for more service round
and about the product. “Conducting electricity. Routing data. Controlling energy.” New opportunities await us and our partners in this business. In the world of science it may be but an
abstract concept, but together with you and for you, we intend to make endless possibilities a
reality in our daily business affairs.

Endless possibilities
At a glance
It’s here at last. Our new Complete Catalogue gathers
together more than 30,000 OBO products – and makes
ordering very simple.
Clearly structured and designed, and focusing on the main information – this is the first time
that OBO has ever gathered together its complete range of more than 30,000 products in
one Complete Catalogue. Fitters and wholesalers can now gain quick-and-easy access to
all seven OBO product areas. Extending over 750 pages, our whole spectrum for installation
planning and practice can now be held in one hand. And with a dual set of index tabs you
can quickly find the product group you want. The catalogue also contains all of the information that you will need to place orders easily.
In its Complete Catalogue, OBO has structured its diverse product world in such a way that
any reader can quickly find their way around. More in-depth material is still provided by the
traditional OBO main catalogues, with their detailed foundational knowledge on the various
product areas, combined with planning aids.

Plus
Brand quality –
There is added value in every OBO product, from the idea all the way
to the support it comes with. Every OBO product carries a Plus within,
which only one brand can offer. Each one is developed, manufactured
and tested with enormous expertise, from the concept all the way to
final quality control. Each one comes together with people who train,
advise and assist at all times. Combined with comprehensive accessories, it ensures success in the practical world, and it is distributed
and explained to the people in that world through numerous channels.
Every step of the way is an added Plus for customers. One of many
successful examples is our OBO fire protection duct, PYROLINE®
Rapid.
A call from the world of work. The idea.
Electricians do not like to build ducts out of plasterboard, and they prefer to leave the cladding-in of
cable installations to drywall builders rather than
using concrete ducts. However, it is important to
encapsulate cables in I-ducts in order to prevent fire
from spreading along cables, and to prevent smoke
from escaping in the event of a cable fire in an
escape route. “Fire protection duct made of metal
which we can easily work with – can you make that?”
OBO can. We had the following idea: to combine the
kind of installation duct familiar to electricians with the
fire protection features of I-duct.
Fire testing at the
materials testing
institute
6 | OBO Blick 1/2014
Company
The new system takes shape. An in-house development.
For OBO’s developers, the Rapid 80 device installation duct made of metal provided exactly
the right foundation for the product. Using a pioneering process, a reactive coating was
applied to the smooth interior surface before the duct was bevelled. This makes every point
accessible and ensures that the necessary coating thickness can be monitored at any time.
They then assembled a portfolio of suitable moulded parts, end-pieces and T-junctions. And
because this system was intended to speed things up in practice, the new product was given
the name PYROLINE® Rapid.
Putting a seal on fire resistance. Testing and approvals.
The first preliminary testing was performed on a small test rig using hand-made prototypes of
the duct. The principle of the PYROLINE® Rapid fire protection duct is that in the event of a
fire, the interior coating foams up, thus protecting escape routes against any smoke and fire
which might otherwise come out. The new product was then “knighted” at the materials
testing institute. The fire protection duct fulfils DIN 4102 Part 11 in fire resistance categories
I30 to I120. What that means is that the duct stays enclosed for up to two hours. Official
approval for construction was then awarded as proof that the product can be used under
German building law.
OBO Blick 1/2014 | 7
Company
Highest manufacturing standards.
In-house production and QS.
Once the fire test had been passed, the go-ahead was given for a
pilot series of all of the components in the portfolio. Initial samples were tested by quality assurance, marginal changes were
adapted to the drawings and approved. Checking all of the parts
delivered to incoming goods by quality assurance is also mandatory. Everything OK? Then the PYROLINE® Rapid fire protection
duct can be manufactured, including matching moulded parts
and reducers.
In touch with practitioners. Training.
Now it is time for the tradesmen to speak.
How does the new product feel? Does it fulfil
practical demands? Electricians used sample
duct sections to learn how to use it. At the
OBO Campus, the whole system can be
assembled. And? Spot on! Thanks to its thin
material, PYROLINE® Rapid is slimline yet
voluminous inside. Its low weight makes
handling extremely easy. Detailed installation
instructions explain the most frequent
practical scenarios, and answer many fitters’
questions in advance. Easy, quick installation
and safe fire protection – in other words,
exactly what people in the practical world
had been asking for.
8 | OBO Blick 1/2014

Available anywhere at any time.
Handling.
PYROLINE® Rapid is now readily
available in two different sizes from
OBO’s warehouses. The moulded parts
are individually packed and labelled so
they can be easily identified. Long
pieces of up to two metres are also
available from the warehouses or
through wholesalers; because fitters
have been waiting for this new product
for a long time, many retailers have
already ordered the new OBO PYROLINE® Rapid fire protection duct.
Assistance in every channel. Support Plus.
Online or analogue, all of the most important specifications, images, texts and diagrams
are included in the PYROLINE® Rapid system instructions so that no question remains
unanswered. Users will find information in many different channels: on the Internet, in the
BSS catalogue and in the press. And in person, of course. Consultants on the OBO
Hotline can answer any technical question expertly. Sales representatives will come and
visit you at your site. And should circumstances arise as a result of special requirements,
the OBO product manager responsible can issue statements relating to fire protection.

New powder coating system enables a
greater number of colours, surface textures
and processing standards
An ultramodern powder coating plant was commissioned at OBO’s
Menden-Bösperde site in March 2014. This has spelled an end to long
periods of waiting following surface treatment. The powder paint which it
applies hardens immediately once baked, and the parts can then be
processed further.
New application technology
Products of up to six metres long, such as cable ladders, can be treated
using the new system. In the first step, pre-treatment, almost any metal – aside from coloured sheets of brass or copper – can be treated with
water and chemical additives. The parts are then placed in the dryer
before moving to the powder cabin, where the powder paint is applied in
an electrostatic process. The new application technique enables the use
of additional types of powder. From now on, product surfaces can be
prepared for extreme conditions. The choice of surface textures is equally
diverse – rough, medium-rough and smooth surfaces are all possible.

Quick and eco-friendly
Colours can be changed in just ten minutes thanks to the new quickchange cabin. This process previously took two hours. The new technology is also much more eco-friendly than conventional painting methods. “We don’t use any solvents for it, since most powders are based on
natural resins,” explains Frank Stötzel of OBO. And the water used by the
preparation system is treated in a vacuum evaporator and fed fully back
into the system where it is reused.

Endless possibilities.
With intelligently networked systems.
OBO Bettermann is constantly investing in research and development for
products that will offer added value in the way they are worked with and
used. All seven of our product areas have been extended with new and
evolved products again this year. For example, new, walk-on cable trays,
elegant oval service poles, and our new irod lightning interceptor system.
Our PYROCOMB® Intube insulation has already been designated “Fire
Protection Product of the Year 2014”. This and other useful products from
OBO help make electrical installations in buildings and plants even safer,
more convenient and more economical.

Protection for inverters
PV systems solutions
Photovoltaic systems on roofs and in other exposed
positions are at risk from lightning strikes and surge
voltages. A photovoltaic system, once invested in,
therefore requires special protection, on both the DC
and the AC side. OBO offers a wide range of solutions
for protecting inverters with up to three separate MPP
trackers. A selection of preinstalled casings feature
up to six terminal points with cross-sections of
6 mm². PV combination conductors type 1 + 2 can be
accommodated there as can PV surge conductors.
Casings are suitable for outdoor use thanks to their
weather-resistant material and protection category of
IP 66. The cable gland set supplied with them makes
it easy to install them on-site in the shortest time.

Surge protection for LED street lamps
Energy-saving LED lamps are becoming more and
more common in street-lighting situations. But their
free-standing poles are doubly endangered: by lightning and by surges from the mains. OBO has now
developed a special surge conductor for protecting
the sensitive electronic drivers and LED lights inside
street lamps. The ÜSM-LED 230 type 2 conductor
has a high conductivity of up to 20 kA, but with a very
low protection level of below 1.3 kV it is also suitable
for protecting highly sensitive electronic components.
Its compact dimensions allow its casing to be fitted
inside street lamp connection cubicles or in the lamp
heads themselves. ÜSM-LED 230 conductors fulfil
the requirements of a type 2 protection device, as
defined in the latest product standard EN 61643-11.

Digital lightning current counter
Now you can even count lightning. OBO supplies not only numerous protection systems against lightning and surges, it also allows you to count
the number of strikes. The LC-01 lightning current counter records the
number of pulse and lightning currents and saves it permanently. You can
easily read the number from its digital display. Pulse currents of 0.3 to
100 kA are recorded. Thanks to its high protection category of IP 67, this
counter is suitable for installation indoors and outdoors.

Little work – lots of protection
PYROLIQ® casting compound system
Industry, shipbuilding and offshore – if conditions are extremely tough,
then the safest method is to cast around cables. The PYROLIQ®

Incorporate the latest flooring trends with ease
Form box for polished screed and terrazzo
Polished screed, natural-look screed or terrazzo-look – readyfinished screed is very much in fashion in modern interior design.
Aside from all the design possibilities it offers, this way of finishing
flooring is popular among builders and architects because it is economical. Ready-finished screed is used in residential and other
buildings as well as for flooring in commercial properties.
OBO Bettermann now offers a new underfloor solution for the
special processes involved in building a screed layer. Namely, the screed form box for the flush, seamless installation of
stainless steel cassettes in the surface of floors.
A casting form is placed floating on top of the underfloor box with
installation cover, and seals off the spaces between the box and the
cassette frame. The sidewalls of the form box are designed to be
compatible with the production of ready-finished screed, which
allows the full thickness of screed above the underfloor box to be
used. An aluminium protective cover, which flush-closes the stainless
steel cassette, can be ground over together with the screed surface.
Upmarket screed flooring can be enhanced even further using
this new form box, which supplies modern electrical installations
out of the floor. The stainless steel cassettes offer installation
space for up to twelve sockets as well as diverse data and multimedia connections from the OBO Modul 45 socket series.

OBO Bettermann equipped Dortmund’s Wambel Tunnel with tested,
standard-compliant electrical installation systems. From November 2012

Efficiently installing electricity and light –
OBO cable trays with integrated LED
luminaire support adaptors
On the premises of AUDI AG in Ingolstadt, three multi-storey car parks
with a total of 3,100 spaces were commissioned. More than seven
kilometres of OBO cable tray with integrated LED luminaire support
adapters carry cables safely through the building, and also provide
energy-saving, functional lighting. That is because thousands of LED
modules are integrated into the OBO DKS cable trays which run through
the parking levels in Ingolstadt by means of SKS luminaire support
adapters. OBO supplied this product in a special version with a side
height of 85 millimetres, to the precise specifications of AUDI AG.
The operators at Audi were impressed, above all, by the balanced
overall impression given by the installation, since the trays and adapters are of the same width. Lights, furthermore, are integrated into
the trays, so they no longer protrude from beneath. Because of the
adapters’ modular design, the lights could be positioned on the
cable trays precisely where they were needed around the site. Whether
driving in the shuttle bus or in an employee’s vehicle, OBO’s solutions in the parking areas always cast things in the right light.

Oil Pump Station GNPS
Standing up to
tough conditions
The 2,228-kilometre-long Kazakhstan-China Pipeline
allows China to import oil directly via pipeline from
Central Asia for the first time. From 2011 to 2013,
OBO Bettermann delivered cable tray systems that
ensure a supply of electrical power to the Dzhumagaliyeva Oil Pump Station.
Oil pump stations are potentially explosive areas, so

Hosterwitz Waterworks
A tidy solution involving no drilling
Hosterwitz Waterworks supplies part of the City of Dresden with
drinking water. Safety lighting and general lighting throughout the
building were renewed between May and September 2011. In order
to fulfil stringent demands on corrosion protection and attachment
structures, various OBO wide span cable trays and cable ladders
made from high-grade V2A stainless steel were used.
In the Hosterwitz Waterworks project, safety lighting and general lighting
throughout the building were renewed. There were especially stringent
demands placed on the cable support system in terms of its attachment
structures and corrosion resistance. Wide span cable trays made of
stainless steel were fitted above the filter basins and attached at long
intervals. It was not possible to drill into the beams in the pure-water filter
hall, which fulfil an important load-bearing role, and OBO Bettermann was
able to demonstrate in impressive fashion its expertise as a specialist in
attachment solutions requiring no drilling.
To ensure that the project went smoothly, OBO’s sales engineer assisted
the project’s specialist planning engineers prior to the building phase.
OBO’s regional sales director was also available during the building
phase as a direct consultant to the construction manager. Close consulting on-site for the entire duration of the project meant that solutions
could be found quickly to meet the complex attachment requirements
relating to the cable support structure in the project. The installation work
was performed remarkably quickly, while the waterworks continued
operation.

Bürohaus an der Alten Oper, Frankfurt
Fire protection in hollow office floors with
OBO PYROLINE® Rapid fire protection duct
The 20-storey “Bürohaus an der Alten Oper” is a permanent feature of Frankfurt’s skyline, situated in an exceptional location within the banking quarter. As part of the core
refurbishment of the building, 300 metres of OBO PYROLINE® Rapid fire protection
duct were laid in the hollow floor of these upmarket offices in December 2012.
Because this installation greatly reduced the fire load in the hollow flooring, it
was no longer necessary to install a sprinkler system in the flooring – thus saving a considerable amount of money. Because the interior cross-section of OBO
PYROLINE® Rapid fire protection duct is almost identical to its exterior dimensions, there is a particularly large amount of space available to fill with cables.

Bottrop Miner’s Association Hospital
Insulated lightning protection arrestors
laid beneath facade cladding using
OBO’s isCon® system
As part of the refurbishment of Bottrop Miner’s Association Hospital, its
Class 2 lightning protection system was brought right up to date with the
DIN EN 62305 standard using the OBO isCon® system.
One of the challenges of refurbishing this lightning protection system was
laying the wiring on the facade for the room intercoms and electrically
operated roller shutters. This formed numerous crossovers with the
lightning protection system, at which points separation distances could
not be maintained. In the event of lightning striking the lightning protection system, conventional non-insulated arrestor routing along the building facade would have coupled lightning currents into the building.
However, using insulated OBO isCon® arrestors maintained the necessary separation at the crossover points, easily and in compliance with
standards, enabling lightning current to be conducted safely to earth.
Lösungen für das Gesundheitswesen
Further benefits make working with isCon arrestors especially easy. The
isCon® arrestor is delivered on disposable cable drums, allowing it to be
cut conveniently and ecologically to length on-site, while connection
elements can be fitted there, too. This allows fitters to accommodate
adjustments and alterations on building sites. They no longer have to
order ready-made arrestors in predefined lengths – which minimises
costly cut-offs and subsequent readjustments.

Paulinum Leipzig
Reconstruction of the Paulinum –
the main building of the University of Leipzig
The ultramodern and architecturally sophisticated
Paulinum is one of Leipzig’s most impressive buildings. The Paulinum gathers beneath its roof scientific
institutions and the main auditorium of the University
of Leipzig, as well as a prayer room. OBO Bettermann
supplied fire protection and cable support systems for
almost every area of the Paulinum.
The building’s transparent structure means that for
aesthetic reasons, most of the electrical installations
have to be hidden beneath false floors. The use of
fast-fitting RKS-Magic® cable trays and GR-Magic®
mesh cable trays enabled a cable support system
with and without function maintenance to be fitted
quickly. SKS and SKSU cable trays were also fitted in
various areas. KBK fire protection bags were used to
fit fire insulation in the holes in the walls through which
electrical installations pass – quickly, easily and
without producing dust.
Good cooperation between OBO’s representatives,
project managers and fitters helped to accelerate the
progress of building.

Continental AG
Comprehensive systems for
production and office areas
Continental is AG among the world’s leading automotive suppliers. From
September 2012 to October 2013, the company built a new factory for
fuel pumps near the town of Brasov, Romania. OBO Bettermann delivered
comprehensive systems for the complex’s production and office areas,
and provided technical support during the construction work.
The factory complex is divided into two areas: a production area and an
office section with canteen. Various OBO systems are used in both. In the
production area, a reliable network of OBO MKS cable trays supplies
machines and working areas with power and data. UFS underfloor
systems and LFS cable routing systems are installed in the office and
canteen areas. UZD underfloor boxes with GES6 service outlets, Rapid
80 aluminium device installation trunking and ISS service poles provide
flexible access to power and data – even in the middle of large open-plan
areas.
OBO construction engineers supported the facility planners with their
comprehensive knowledge of the demands placed on the electrical
infrastructure of large factory buildings.

Building certification to the DGNB standard
OBO issues the first ever Environmental
Product Declaration (EPD) for a cable
support system
The DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council) uses its certification
system to evaluate eco-friendly, resource-saving and economically efficient buildings. The demand for building certifications compliant with the
DGNB system standard has risen enormously in recent years. Planners
and architects covet the highly respected Gold certificate especially.
However, the DGNB’s system requires that the manufacturers of the
building products used issue what is known as EPDs, or Environmental
Product Declarations, providing details of the environmental properties of
the products. If, with the help of these product certificates, a building
meets the requirements of the DGNB to a specified degree, then the
council issues it a certificate in Bronze, Silver or Gold.
OBO Bettermann – which has been a member of DGNB since 2013 –
has now issued its first EPD for the “Magic cable support system, side
height 60 mm, perforated”. This type 3 Environmental Product Declaration
was drawn up in accordance with the requirements of EN 15804, and
verified by ift Rosenheim. It is the first ever Environmental Product Declaration for any cable support system anywhere, and opens up the way for
OBO to enter into building certification. With it, OBO has also provided
reliable details for the LEED and BREEAM certification systems, so that
buildings can be assessed by those means as well.

International expansion of new
factories in South Africa
OBO Bettermann Holding Africa has been developing
excellently ever since it took over its own production
facilities in South Africa in 2012. During a visit in
January 2014, the management of OBO, including for
the first time senior director Ulrich Bettermann, were
able to apprise themselves of the successes of the
local management team and OBO integration team.
OBO’s global corporate identity has now been introduced for the two African brands O-line and Armco. The
two of them have grown together well within OBO
Bettermann Holding Africa, and have brought profits to
the OBO Group. The local team is especially enthusiastic about the newly formed interfaces, which have
facilitated considerable synergies with the German
parent company.
Developing a strategy for the three Armco business
areas – construction products, transport safety
products and galvanising – was a considerable
challenge. The international rollout meant OBO taking
into account conditions on the African continent,
where the Group is known as a complete provider of
infrastructural solutions (such as in the field of mining),
as well as the requirements of other markets with
typical brand focuses. Investments, such as those
made in the new crash barrier plant at Armco, are
also a step towards expanding in other African
markets.

“Uli, tomorrow’s the day”
How Khodorkovsky flew
to freedom in OBO’s jet
Thursday, five days before Christmas Eve. Ulrich
Bettermann’s mobile phone rings at around four in the
afternoon. Hans-Dietrich Genscher is on the phone:
“Uli, tomorrow’s the day.” The former German Foreign
Minister had informed Bettermann of the circumstances weeks before, but the businessman had
spoken to nobody about it. Mikhail Khodorkovsky’s
release was imminent. An OBO plane was to fly
Russia’s most famous prisoner over to Germany.
The media had in fact reported that very day that the
Russian businessman was about to be pardoned after
ten years in prison. This was after Russia’s President
Vladimir Putin had made a statement to that effect on
the sidelines of a press conference in Moscow some
days before. But nobody knew that Khodorkovsky’s
pardon and release were quite so imminent, and that
86-year-old Genscher had been working towards the
outcome for two years through back-channel diplomacy.
Ulrich Bettermann had flown that Thursday to OBO’s
Hungarian factory in Bugyi near Budapest for a
Christmas party. He would have most liked to have
collected Khodorkovsky personally from St. Petersburg, but instead he put together a two-man crew in
50 | OBO Blick 1/2014
Marsch, who set off for St. Petersburg in an eightseater OBO Citation on the Friday morning. Before
they left, and under immense time-pressure, it had to
be ascertained whether the pilots could actually enter
Russia without visas. The telephones were going
non-stop between Bettermann, Genscher and Putin’s
Presidential Chancery. The world did not yet know
what was about to happen that day. At eight o’clock in
the morning, OBO’s boss rang his media advisor:
“There might be a bit of PR to do today.” Later in the
morning, the first reports of the pending release began
to come out of Russia. A little later it was said that
Khodorkovsky had already been released. Around
midday, the first news was issued that the former oil
magnate seemed already to be on the way to Germany. But how, with whom, and to where exactly? There
was no real news, no information, not even any
speculation.
By this time, Ulrich Bettermann already had his aircraft
with its ex-convict passenger firmly on his radar
screen. It was now flying over Poland, and entered
German airspace at 2.45 p.m. At precisely that
moment, OBO Bettermann released the following
press statement to the public:
Unternehmen
“At 9.20 a.m. CET on the morning of Friday 20
December, Mikhail Khodorkovsky left the penal camp
in the north of Russia near to the Finnish border. He
went straight to St. Petersburg airport. Waiting for him
there was a jet belonging to the OBO Bettermann
group of companies based in Menden, Sauerland,
ready to fly Russia’s most famous prisoner out of
Russia to Berlin.
On Friday morning, Russia’s president Vladimir Putin
had effected his pardon for the businessman, who had
been imprisoned for ten years. At 4 p.m. the previous
afternoon, OBO’s director Ulrich Bettermann had
received a phone call from his old friend Hans-Dietrich
Genscher, who had been working for years for the
release. The former German Foreign Minister asked
Bettermann to provide an aircraft belonging to OBO’s
airline at Arnsberg/Menden aerodrome (FAM).”
The OBO jet carrying Khodorkovsky landed at Berlin’s
Schönefeld airport at 3.09 p.m., where Hans-Dietrich
Genscher was waiting to receive the Russian. The
telephones at OBO Bettermann had not stopped
ringing. “I’ve never experienced such a media storm,”
said Ulrich Bettermann, despite his considerable
public relations experience. All of Germany’s news
agencies, newspapers, radio stations and television
channels were reporting on the event. FAZ, Die Welt,
Süddeutsche Zeitung, Handelsblatt, Bild, dpa, ARD,
ZDF and the private stations – all of them wanted to
now how, and by whom, Khodorkovsky had been
flown to his freedom in Germany. On the weekend, the
Sunday papers went at it all over again. “Putin, Gen-

scher, Bettermann – these three brought Khodorkovsky his freedom,” headlined Bild am Sonntag. European, American, Chinese and of course Russian
newspapers in their Cyrillic script reported on OBO
and its company patron. Just hours after
Khodorkovsky’s flight to freedom, Google registered
more than 6,000 different news sources under the
keyword Bettermann. A full-page portrait of Ulrich
Bettermann was published at the beginning of February in the highly respected Zeit newspaper, calling him
“one of Germany’s most successful businessmen”. He
himself, however, was somewhat more diffident when
he received the press on Monday, 23 December, at
Arnsberg/Menden aerodrome, together with the
Khodorkovsky pilot Heiko Bauer and female co-pilot
Kim Schlothmann. “I didn’t expect so much media
hype,” Bettermann said. “For me it was about helping
my friend Hans-Dietrich Genscher on a special mission
and flying Khodorkovsky out at the request of the
Russian government.”
New location in the middle of
India’s boomtown
OBO keeps growing – including in India.
The OBO Bettermann Group is currently investing
several million euros in the expansion of a new
location, including production, for the local Indian
market. To do this they purchased a piece of land in
Oragadam, which is a town near to the metropolis of
Chennai (Madras) in the state of Tamil Nadu. Tamil
Nadu is in the south of India and is the most industrialised part of the country, whose population is highly
educated. So there are many good reasons to settle in
this region.
Oragadam itself is currently the industrial location of
India. Numerous global corporations, especially from
the car industry, have settled there, a new international
airport is being planned, and a network of highways is
being built. The new buildings belonging to OBO
Bettermann India Private Limited, which has previously
52 | OBO Blick 1/2014
been situated in Chennai City, include areas for
production and logistics, as well as office space. They
plan to move to Oragadam in May 2014.
Back in January 2014, OBO Bettermann India visited
Elecrama, which is India’s trade fair for the electrical
installation industry. From 8 to 12 January, almost
1,000 local and international companies presented
themselves over an area of 70,000 square metres in
Bangalore. This was the fifth time that OBO had been
there. On its 120-square-metre booth in the German
Pavilion, the trade fair team exhibited all of OBO’s
product areas, as well as the products which will soon
be made on location in India. Sales workers from
across India, Sri Lanka and Germany all helped to run
booth at Elecrama.

High-level contacts in countries
with new OBO factories
Ulrich Bettermann at the World Economic Forum in Davos
Ulrich Bettermann did not require much introduction to
anybody at this year’s World Economic Forum. Following global reports that a jet belonging to the OBO
Bettermann Group had flown Russian businessman
Mikhail Khodorkovsky to Germany just before Christmas, almost every one of the 2,500 international
business and political leaders in Davos knew who
Bettermann was. The high point of Bettermann’s
recent meetings there had been a one-hour discussion with the Indian Minister of Commerce and
Industry, Anand Sharma, at the end of January.
OBO Bettermann will be building another factory in
India this year. The Minister has already confirmed his
attendance at the opening ceremony. Ulrich Bettermann has been a permanent member of the World
Economic Forum (WEF) since 1983; just how useful
such an event can be was demonstrated by other
high-ranking contacts made by the electrical producer.
The evening before, he met with German Gref of
Sberbank, the head of the largest Russian financial
institution in Moscow. OBO is also planning its own
production facility in Russia for 2014. There was a
furore in Davos about a Russian-Hungarian treaty on
the construction of a new, ultramodern ten billion euro
nuclear power station in the city of Paks, 100 kilometres south of Budapest. “This should lower energy
costs in Hungary considerably, while in Germany they
rise without end,” said Bettermann, whose company
runs its second-biggest factory in Hungary, after
Menden in Sauerland, Germany.
Another of Bettermann’s interesting personal meetings
was a lunch with Neeraj Sahai, President of the ratings
agency Standard & Poor’s in New York. Bettermann’s
meeting with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev,
was not altogether surprising; the two men had
already met in the country’s capital, Baku. Bettermann
is on the board of the German-Azerbaijani Society.
Bettermann stayed in Davos until the very end of the
World Economic Forum, waiting in anticipation for
Israel’s president Shimon Peres, whom he had met
previously in Tel Aviv. Bettermann’s assessment of the
global economy after his time at Davos: “Cautiously
optimistic.”

OBO likes masters. And masters like us.
We assisted master training courses with free OBO products
Partnership, connectedness, closeness – these are all values which shape
OBO as a company, and most especially, close collaboration with the
trades, who are our most important customers. That is why we are now
assisting electrical technicians as they train to become master electricians.
Training to become a master electrician is expensive. Would-be masters
also have to pay for most of the installation materials used in their training.
For this reason, the master electrician class at Ulm Educational Academy
asked us whether we would provide them with free installation material.
And because we like masters, we did. OBO Bettermann, after all, has been
represented for more than a hundred years by high-quality and intelligent
products that are especially easy to fit. Our delivery of 1750 grip ISO clips
arrived in Ulm in the middle of November 2013. We wish the master electrician class of 2013 at Ulm Educational Academy every success in their
ongoing training.
Positive partnerships in the Middle East
OBO Bettermann has maintained its own office in the Dubai Airport
Free Zone since the beginning of 2013, and has invested increasingly
in the region. The number of employees has grown, investments have
flowed into the sales networks, and country-specific product ranges
have been extended. Partners of OBO Bettermann from the Middle
East region met recently for a three-day event at Menden. Attendees from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Abu Dhabi and Dubai
underwent training, discussed project solutions in the field of cable
management and exchanged views on marketing strategies. Newly
developed products as well as extensions of existing ranges, such as
specialised trunking systems for the Middle East, were also presented.
The tense situation in Ukraine has not
failed to affect our subsidiary in Kiev.
