SEC RUNNERS OF THE WEEK (SEPT. 27)
Men’s Runner: Jacob Thomson, Kentucky
**Kentucky’s Jacob Thomson ran the fastest
8k in the SEC this weekend 24:12 to finish as
the top collegian attached to a team – second overall in the race – at the Texas A&M
Invitational.
**Thomson led the Wildcats to a runner-up
team finish.
**Thomson’s time was a season best.
Women’s Runner: Karis Jochen, Texas A&M
**Texas A&M’s Karis Jochen defended her
title at the Texas A&M Invitational, covering
the 6,000m course in a time of 20:14.2,
which is currently the top time in the SEC at
that distance this season. The Aggies placed
fifth in team scoring with 123 points to finish
behind Rice (70), Baylor (72), Lipscomb (80),
and Kentucky (82).
**Jochen recorded her second individual
victory of the season after claiming the Aggie
Opener at 4,100m three weeks ago.
**In bettering a field of 166 runners, Jochen
won by two-plus seconds over Abigail Cartwright of Rice (20:16.6).
Men’s Freshman: Brennan Fields, Kentucky
**Kentucky’s Brennan Fields was UK’s third
finisher -- 10th overall -- in 24:39.50 at the
Texas A&M Invitational helping UK to a runner-up team finish.
**His time is fastest 8k by a freshman this
season and the 22th fastest in the SEC so
far this year.
**Fields’ time was a PR by more than 50
seconds.
Women’s Freshman: Ashley Driscoll, Texas A&M
**For the second consecutive meet, Aggie
freshman Ashley Driscoll finished as the
second Texas A&M runner.
**She placed 19th overall with a time of
21:37.2 on the 6,000m course at the Texas
A&M Invitational.
**Among the field of 166 runners, Driscoll
was the third freshman finisher.

SEC Athletes of the Week
Each week, the Southeastern Conference will announce four Athlete of the Week honors for
the sport of cross country. The conference will honor a Runner of the Week for both men and
women, and also a Freshman of the Week for both men and women. Athletes of the Week are
announced each Tuesday by 12 p.m. CT from the SEC Office.

The 2016 SEC Cross Country Championships will be held Friday, Oct. 28 in Fayetteville, Ark. To

» Arkansas picked to win SEC titles
» SEC in the NCAA: Cross Country History
The University of Arkansas men and the Arkansas women have
been predicted to claim the 2016 Southeastern Conference Cross
Country Championships, as decided by a vote of the league’s head
coaches. The SEC on Aug. 29 released its 2016 SEC Cross Country
Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
Points for the men’s poll were awarded on a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-1011-12 basis, while the women’s poll was awarded on a 1-2-3-4-5-6-78-9-10-11-12-13 basis. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their
own teams.
The Arkansas men were predicted to win the 2016 SEC Cross
Country Championship. The Razorbacks claimed the 2015 SEC
Championship, their sixth consecutive SEC Championship and 23rd in
the last 25 years. The No. 8 Razorbacks garnered 10 first place votes,
while Ole Miss earned three first place votes.
The Arkansas women, who have won three consecutive SEC Cross
Country Championships, were selected to win the 2016 SEC Cross
Country Championship. The Razorbacks received 13 first place votes,
and Vanderbilt earned one first place vote.
The 2016 SEC Cross Country Championships are slated to take
place Friday, Oct. 28 in Fayetteville, Ark.
• The SEC has won eight NCAA Men’s Cross Country Championships,
with Arkansas claiming seven and Tennessee winning one. The last
SEC NCAA Championship came in 2000, with Arkansas winning its
third consecutive.

• The SEC has won one NCAA Women’s Cross Country Championship,
with Kentucky holding the only title, which the Wildcats won in 1988.
• The SEC boasts two NCAA Cross Country individual titles, as
Godfrey Siamusiye of Arkansas won back-to-back national crowns in
1995 and 1996.
• No SEC woman has ever claimed an NCAA Cross Country individual championship. Four SEC women have finished as the NCAA
runner-up: Shelly Steely, Florida (1984); Valerie McGovern, Kentucky
(1989); Deena Drossin, Arkansas (1992) and Amy Yoder, Arkansas
(1999).

» About the SEC
• Since its formation in 1933, the SEC has directed and organized
interscholastic athletic competitions, conducted tournaments and
prescribed eligibility rules for student-athletes. The Conference also
facilitates and assists its member institutions in maintaining intercollegiate athletic programs compatible with the highest standards of
education and competitive sports.
• The Southeastern Conference crowns champions in 21 sports - 12
women’s sports and nine men’s sports. They include baseball, men’s
and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, equestrian, football, men’s and women’s golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball,
men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s
tennis, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and
volleyball.
• In the fall of 2012, the University of Missouri and Texas A&M
University became the 13th and 14th members of the Southeastern
Conference. It marked the first expansion for the SEC since 1991 and
the second-ever increase for the league since its founding in 1933.
• The SEC’s mission statement reflects the priorities of the league.
“The purpose of the Southeastern Conference is to assist its member
institutions in the maintenance of programs of intercollegiate athletics which are compatible with the highest standards of education and
competitive sports.”

» Auburn
After a week off, Auburn cross country will return to action Saturday
at the Louisville Classic. Women: Senior Veronica Eder has gotten
off to a strong start this season with three-straight top-five finishes.
At the Commodore Classic on Sept. 17, Eder finished fifth in a field
of 261, that included runners from Vanderbilt, Missouri and Georgia.
Junior Anna Nelson has been Auburn’s second scorer in all three
matches this season, along with two top-ten finishes. Men: Auburn’s
men are coming off of a seventh place finish at the Commodore
Classic on Sept. 17 and will look to ramp up training to prepare for
the SEC Championships. Junior Kevin Wyss has led the way for the
Tigers, finishing as Auburn’s leading scorer in all three races. Wyss
finished 20th in the men’s 8k, at the Commodore Classic, in a race
that featured five SEC teams.
» Florida
This past Saturday the Gators hosted the Mountain Dew Invitational
at Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, where they swept the
men’s and women’s team titles for the second time in as many meets
this season. Florida’s men and women, both of which won by decisive
margins, swept the program’s only home meet of the year for the
first time since 2012. UF’s women won by 44 points to claim its third
consecutive MDI title, while the men won by 27 points to reclaim the
title for the first time since 2013. Freshman Jessica Pascoe led the
women, earning a runner-up finish in the 5k race. Senior Taylor Tubbs
was another one of the four Gators who cracked the Division I top 10,
crossing in fourth place. For the men, Carlos Miranda improved on his
time at the MDI from a year ago by roughly 39 seconds. At 25:06.24,
Miranda was the top Division I finisher by 24 seconds in the 8k race.
Freshman Colin Schaefer (third), sophomore Magnus Pettersen
(fourth), and Mac Reynolds (fifth) rounded out UF’s quartet of top-five
Division I finishers. Florida will race again this Saturday (Oct. 1) at the
highly-competitive Paul Short Run in Lehigh, Pa.
» Kentucky
Kentucky’s men’s team finished second to the host team at the Texas
A&M Invitational last week. Jacob Thomson finished as runner-up
individually Kentucky’s women’s team placed fourth overall with 82
points. Thomson earned his second runner-up finish of the season,
running a 2016 best 8,000-meter time of 24:12.70 – 19 seconds
behind winner Brian Barraza of Houston. Katy Kunc – winner of her
first two races this season – turned in another strong result placing
third overall in a 6k time of 20:18.50.
» Mississippi State
At the loaded Griak Invitational, the No. 29 Mississippi State cross
country team reeled off an eighth-place finish in a field of 36 teams,
finishing ahead of two nationally-ranked teams (No. 17 Iowa State,
No. 25 Minnesota). MSU collected 225 points in the 6K event, with
five athletes placing inside the Top 100. Senior All-American Rhianwedd Price once again paced the Maroon and White, finishing 22nd
overall with a time of 22:22. Sophomore Shannon Fair finished just
behind Price in 31st place, completing the race in 22:32. In her season-debut, Ffion Price placed 35th with a time of 22:35. Freshman
Stephanie Peterson checked in with a time of 23:00 to place 65th

» Missouri
Mizzou travels to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Chile Pepper Invitational
on Oct. 1, coming off fifth-place finishes for the men’s and women’s
teams at the Commodore Classic on Sept. 17. The women will be led
by junior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa), who took home SEC
Runner of the Week honors after finishing first at the Commodore
Classic. Schweizer finished 13 seconds ahead of the runner up while
setting a personal-record time of 16:46.70 in the 5000m race. On
the men’s side, eight of Mizzou’s 10 runners finished in the top-70 at
the Commodore Classic, led by a 14th place finish from Ollie Lockley
(Colby, Isle of Man) in the 8000m, who passed the finish line with a
personal-record time of 25:01.20.
» Texas A&M
Texas A&M travels to South Bend, Indiana, to compete in Friday’s
Notre Dame Invitational. The women’s race will cover 5,000m while
the men race over a five mile distance. The Aggie men, who have
received votes in the national rankings, are ranked third in the South
Central region with the women ranked sixth. Men: Texas A&M claimed
a team victory over Kentucky by an eight-point margin (33-41) as
Austin Wells led the Aggie squad with a fifth-place finish at the Texas
A&M Invitational held on the Dale Watts course. Wells ran 24:12.7
over the 8,000m distance as Texas A&M placed five runners among
the top 11 overall finishers and they were separated by a 17-second
gap. Following Wells among the Aggie scoring five were Elliott Farris,
Jacob Perry, Cameron Villarreal and Christian Farris as they finished
4-5-7-8-9 in team scoring places. A second group of five Aggies also
finished within a 17-second gap as they were led by Colin Stoeber,
who placed 31st overall. Women: Aggie All-American Karis Jochen
defended her individual title from last season as she captured a
second win this season in covering the 6,000m distance in a time of
20:14.2, the fastest time over the distance in the SEC this season.
Texas A&M finished fifth in team scoring with 123 points behind Rice
(70), Baylor (72), Lipscomb (80) and Kentucky (82). Freshman Ashley
Driscoll was the second Aggie runner for the second consecutive
meet this season, running 21:37.1 as she placed 19th overall. The
rest of Texas A&M’s scoring five included Katie Watson (32nd), Devin
Norton (36th) and Kelsey Persyn (42nd).
» Vanderbilt
Hosting their only home meet of the season, the No. 26-ranked
Vanderbilt women ran into some tough weather on Sept, 17, but they
battled through the distractions and the delays to earn a third-place
finish among a talent-rich 25-team field at the Commodore Classic. Sophomore Sara Tsai led the way for Vanderbilt, finishing fifth
overall with a personal-record time of 17:08.6 for the Commodores,
who placed five runners among the Top-45 in the crowded field that
featured more than 260 runners. Maddie Criscione was the second
Commodore across the line, finishing 19th at 17:38.2. She was
followed by Reagan Anderson in 27th at 17:45.4, Megan Huebner in
28th at 17:48.3 and Devon Grisbaum in 45th at 18:01.2. Vanderbilt
was the highest finisher among the SEC schools in action. Missouri
finished fifth, Mississippi State was sixth, Georgia was 10th and
Auburn was 11th. On the men’s side, Vanderbilt finished 18th in the
8k race. The Commodores were paced by Jake Van Geffen, who was
69th at 26:08.8. The Vanderbilt men and women will next compete at
the Notre Dame Invitational.
