Internship Study Guide Adaptation Physiology Group
Aim
The aim of the internship is to provide an opportunity for the student to broaden their scientific horizon in an
organization outside Wageningen University. A host organization will be chosen in the Netherlands or abroad,
where the student is provided with a 'taste' of a potential future working environment; it provides the student
his/her working experience on an academic level in a professional organization.
Preferably, the internship should at least contain:
• the possibility of learning the “ins and outs” of an organization
• a defined research part to be carried out by the student
Planning
For an orientation towards internships it is recommended to contact senior students who have already done
their internships. There are also Social Evening meetings on internships organized by the study association
the ‘Veetelers’. At the Adaptation Physiology secretariat a database with information about experience of
students at different institutes is available.
Please contact us at least 6 months in advance. Make an appointment with the educational coordinator,
dr. Wouter Hazeleger via the Adaptation Physiology secretariat (phone +31 (0) 3178483120 or e8mail
office.adp@wur.nl).
The first contact with the host organization will be done by the coordinator, after which the student will
arrange the internship in more detail with the host organization directly.
During the time that students are busy with their internship (or thesis), it is almost impossible to do courses as
well. Therefore, it is advisable to finish courses as much as possible before one starts with an internship.
Report and evaluation
The internship report consists of two parts. Part A is a short report and Part B is a scientific report.
Both reports should include the following information:
• name, subject, size (ECTS) and duration of the internship
• short report with technical information, including the mission statement of the internship provider; an
overview of the students’ activities, impressions/opinions
• a scientific report (in most cases) about the work done and its results/discussion, comparable to a
(small) thesis (max 20 pages)
The report should be in English, except in the case the internship was done at a Dutch organization.
The report should be handed in within 3 months after the end of the internship to the secretary.
At the end of the internship the student has to contact the secretary (office.adp@wur.nl). The students will
receive an evaluation form and an evaluation form will be sent to the internship provider.
Presentation/colloquia
After the internship the student is expected to present their final result. Every second Tuesday of the month
there is a possibility for MSc students to hold their colloquium (in English). Contact at least three weeks
before the date one of the secretaries to plan your colloquium.
Final examination
Two members of the staff who is familiar with the research topics of the internship evaluates the internship
with the student. The student will receive an individual mark based on the report, evaluation form of the
internship provider, the final examination and colloquium.
If you have any questions please contact Dr. Wouter Hazeleger (wouter.hazeleger@wur.nl).
Documents and grants
The Adaptation Physiology secretariat can help you with the following issues:
• Visa: This is often a time consuming procedure. For information about visa you can contact the embassy
or consulate. A letter of statement that you are registered as a university student and the internship is a
compulsory part of your study is available at the ADP8secretariat.
• Accommodation. If you wish you can sublet your room of Idealis. You can obtain the form Request for
Subletting at the department of Housing Services. Another possibility is to give notice to your old room
and get an urgency room after returning back. For more information please contact Idealis.
• Travelling insurance. Wageningen University pays for travelling insurance. Therefore you need a
statement of the department which is availably at the ADP8secretariat.
• OV Jaarkaart (only for Dutch students). It is possible to postpone the ‘OV jaarkaart’ by filling up a
standard form. Available by internet (www.ib8groep.nl).
All forms, statements and/or letters are made and signed by one of the secretaries.
