Haverhill Golf Club Welcome Pack Introduction Membership Parklands Menus Dress Code Health & Safety Application Form Introduction About the Course Haverhill Golf Club is located 20 miles south east of Cambridge, 17 miles west of Bury St Edmunds, 18 miles north of Braintree and 30 miles north west of Colchester. The golf course is set in pleasant parkland, lying across two valleys. The front nine with its undulating fairways is admirably complimented by a saucer shaped back nine, which is bisected by Stour Brook as it meanders through the golf course with greens reputed to be the best in the county. The course will present a challenge to both the seasoned golfer and newcomers alike. The Clubhouse The Golf Club at Haverhill is a very friendly meeting place, incorporating all modern facilities including a spike bar, changing rooms, showers, bar, terrace and restaurant. After an enjoyable round of golf members can enjoy the friendly and relaxing atmosphere of the Clubhouse, where our staff offer a wide range of high quality food and beverages. Some of the social competitions are followed by an evening function, and during the winter months quite a few social functions are arranged which do not include golf, and you are welcome to bring along your friends and family. We also hire out the clubhouse and meeting room for functions at discounted rates for members, please contact the office for further details. Membership There is no discrimination between lady and gentlemen members. Subscriptions are the same and the course is available to all members at any time, providing there are no competitions taking place. No tee bookings are required. We have a very healthy junior section where the younger players are helped and encouraged extensively. All ladies, and men over 55 years, are invited to join the Senior Section, where you are guaranteed a playing partner nearly every weekday if you wish. Senior league matches take place throughout the year and there are many friendly inter-club matches too. You can pay your joining fee separately or combine with your subscription. We can accept payment by cheque, cash, credit card* (except American Express) or debit card. Haverhill Golf Club uses the facilities of Fairway Credit, which is an easy payment scheme for golfers, where the yearly subscriptions (and joining fee) can be spread over the playing year at 6.2% interest. Introduction Our membership ‘gold cards’ double up as debit cards, and after an initial payment onto the card (either by cash, cheque, debit or credit cards*), most purchases made from the bar receive a discount, providing your card is used for payment. Our bar staff can top up your balance at any time. If you like the sound of Haverhill Golf Club, complete your application form and send it in. Currently we are running a scheme for 7 day membership to join for £70 a month, without an upfront full joining fee, please contact the office for further details. The waiting list is not very long, as we are hoping to slowly expand our membership. A short informal interview with members of the Committee takes place before you join, which allows them to explain the various club rules. Other blind shots are 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th (into the green), 7th, 9th, 13th, 15th, 17th and 18th. Adjacent Fairways: A deviant ball can carry to adjacent fairways/tees and greens on virtually ALL holes, please shout FORE. Steep Banks/Ditches: 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th. River: A river comes into play on the 3rd, 5th, 6th, 11th, 15th and 17th holes. In some cases, the sides of the stream are steep and slippery. Lakes/ponds: Lakes feature on the 11th,15th/16th and between the 1st & 18th fairways. The water in the lakes, which may have steep and slippery slopes, is deep and there are silt deposits. Players MUST NOT under any circumstances retrieve balls from the lakes. Life belts are located alongside each lake. Trees & Bushes: A number of trees/bushes on the course have thorns that may cause injury/damage to clothing etc. Care should be taken when playing in close proximity to these and a penalty drop taken where appropriate. Bridges (Slip Hazard): Bridge coverings are liable to be slippery when wet, particularly on the 11th, 15th, 17th and 18th. Buggies: When leaving from the 5th green to go to the 6th tee, continue past the concrete steps and over the bridge leading from the 3rd tee. Beware of players teeing off from the 3rd tees. Steps: There are concrete steps leading from the 5th green to the 6th tee, which may be dangerous when wet, or in icy conditions. Beware of all wooden sleepers, especially when wet. Please use the steps where provided. Public Footpath: There are Public Footpaths and driveways to the left of the 11th hole and right of the 12th. Balls MUST NOT be retrieved from any out of bounds forming the boundary of the course. Other potential hazards: ☛ Be aware of the road and Golf club entrance/driveway on the left hand side of the 2nd, and the 3rd holes. ☛ Be aware that adults, children and animals may inadvertently enter onto the course, especially from the left hand side of the 7th, 8th, 10th, 13th, at the far end of the 13th green/14th tee and behind the 16th green. Toilets: There are Ladies and Gents toilets situated on the course by the 9th tee. For security purposes, these facilities are protected by an entry code that is available from the Pro shop. The Green Keeper’s Compound/Buildings: These are situated on the right hand side of the main entry road. This is a working area and players are not permitted to enter the compound under any circumstances. Other Health and Safety Considerations: ☛ Fertiliser and Insecticides etc. on the ground: Do not lick golf balls or fingers. A notice on the 1st Tee will advise when spraying is in progress. Players are advised to take heed of the warnings and protect themselves. ☛ Footwear: Ensure that you are wearing suitable footwear – you have a responsibility to yourself to avoid slipping on slopes and other awkward places. ☛ Green Keeping Staff: Green Keeping Staff have priority at all times. Always make sure that they are aware of your presence before you play your shot. The Green Keeping Staff are instructed to signal to you when it is safe to play. Health & Safety THE PRACTICE GROUND Persons under the age of 13 MUST NOT use the practice ground without appropriate adult supervision; this includes crossing to/from the practice area to the golf club/pro shop. If the klaxon has been sounded, then a player is not entitled to override that decision and continue play. When the klaxon has been sounded for play to be suspended, players must discontinue play immediately. Persons using the practice area are expected to be aware at all times of danger to others and to themselves. Care must be taken at all times to avoid accidents or injuries to themselves or others who may be present on the practice area. Please make sure that the practice area is clear with due allowance for the possibility of an errant shot. Every effort will be made to ensure the warning is sounded with sufficient time to allow for all competitors, caddies and spectators to evacuate the course prior to an electric storm striking the course. Walking to/from the practice area requires crossing Coupals road at a point of limited visibility of approaching traffic. Extreme caution must be used at all times, especially when pushing a golf cart. Haverhill Golf Club cannot be held responsible for any accident however caused when crossing this road. Upon the signal being given, all players, caddies and spectators must comply with these conditions. RESUMPTION OF PLAY TWO SHORT BLASTS on the klaxon will notify players when it is safe to resume play. No player shall resume play until the klaxon has sounded. USE OF PRIVATELY OWNED BUGGIES The use of privately owned single seat ride-on buggies are permitted only by prior application to the Club Manager, and in line with any trolley ban etc. Buggies can be dangerous if driven without due care. Please always drive any buggies with due consideration to your own safety as well as that of other passengers/players. All buggies must be operated in accordance with our Golf Buggy Safety Policy (displayed at the pro shop and on each buggy). INCLEMENT WEATHER Darkness, rain, fog and ice: During inclement weather, the fact that the course has not been officially closed does not warrant that it is fit for play. Therefore, members and visitors should themselves determine whether they consider it safe to play. SUSPENSION OF PLAY Players must protect themselves in Health and Safety matters especially should there be a danger from lightning when play must stop immediately. WORK ON THE CLUB COURSE & PREMISES No work of any kind will take place on the club course or premises without prior knowledge of the club management. Any such work will be carried out by staff or other authorised persons including, subcontractors or volunteers and will be supervised as appropriate. Players have a duty of care to behave in such a way that others will not be injured by their actions. They also have a duty of care to ensure that they do not injure themselves. Rule 6-8 of the Rules of Golf makes it quite clear that a player is entitled to discontinue play if the player believes that there is a danger from lightning. All players must adhere to the following Suspension of Play procedure. A suspension of play for a dangerous situation (e.g. lightning) will be signalled by a prolonged single blast on the klaxon operated from the Pro-shop. However, even if the klaxon is not sounded and the players believe that there is real risk of, or danger from, lightning then the player is entitled to proceed under the provision of Rule 6-8 and discontinue play. During casual play, players have to proceed under Rule 6-8. This makes it the player’s own responsibility to discontinue play when, in his/her opinion, a danger from lightning exists. JUNIOR MEMBERS There is no discrimination on the course and in the clubhouse between adult and junior members. The course is available to all members at any time, providing there are no competitions taking place. No tee bookings are required. We have a very healthy junior section where the younger players are helped and encouraged extensively. The Club has a Junior Committee that is responsible for arranging the junior programme. We also have a Welfare Officer and a comprehensive set of Safeguarding and Protection of Children Policies and procedures, which ensures that all aspects of junior welfare are protected whilst juniors are in the confines of the Golf Club. Juniors may become club members at the age of 7 years old and are then allowed to play on the course. Under 7’s are allowed to play on the course, but for health and safety reasons, this is at the discretion of the Club Manager or the Club Professional. Under 7’s must be accompanied by an adult. All juniors, whether or not they have an official Club handicap may enter junior competitions. Club handicaps are achievable after three junior competition cards have been submitted. Club handicaps begin at 36 for boys and 54 for girls. There are a number of competitions which are specific to juniors and, in addition, juniors with the appropriate club handicap, 28 or below for boys, and 36 or below for girls, may enter adult medal and stableford competitions as well as the majority of adult competitions. A scheme is available, whereby any junior on payment of £30 joining fee will be entitled to play Monday to Friday for a trial period of one month before joining the club. This £30 will be deducted from any fees charged if the junior wishes to continue membership of Haverhill Golf Club. Members of the Junior Committee will explain in further detail at an informal interview, which parents/guardians are also requested to attend in order to discuss any queries you may have.
