HERMAperfect
HERMAperfect
Multi-layer coating technology
This technology involves the simultaneous application of different dispersion adhesives in the coating process. Each adhesive has its own
special properties. Working in combination, they give the customer
added value. An important advantage of HERMAperfect is that its
adhesive properties are not dependent on its processing properties.
When there is only one layer of adhesive, one must choose between
good adhesive properties and good processing properties. When
several adhesive coatings are applied at the same time, one can have
both.
This technology gives HERMA the means to develop and manufacture
new and innovative products.

Self-adhesive Materials for the food industry
“You eat with your eyes” – this is true not only for food, but also for packaging and labels. But appearance is only one factor in
labelling. Food labels can be applied under extremely difficult conditions. Labelling is performed at high speeds and in moist or cold
environments. Blow-on labelling is a non-contact method of application. Labels must be able to cope with all these conditions.
Legal requirements must be considered as well. Adhesives now have to be suitable for use with fatty foodstuffs. In particular,
with conventional packaging it must be ensured that the adhesive and label material do not migrate into the food if the film has
insufficient barrier properties.
Technical requirements:
Legal requirements:
• High tack
• BfR and FDA certification
• Insensitive to moist and cold surfaces
• ISEGA certification for contact with
• Suitable for pasteurisation
• Suitable for deep-freeze labels
foodstuffs with fatty surfaces
• REACH conformity
• No-label look
• Non-contact labelling
• Good perforation qualities
• Oil- and grease-repellent
10
Thanks to HERMA’s new multi-layer coating technology, its adhesives fully meet the
requirements in both areas. The middle layer provides much higher tack while helping
to minimise migration.

Self-adhesive Materials for the chemical industry
Most products used in the chemical industry require certification according to
British Standard 5609 Section 2. To comply with this standard, an affixed, unprinted label must
be able to withstand three months of immersion in seawater without separating from the substrate.
Containers with these labels can therefore be transported by sea without difficulty.
Many HERMA adhesive compounds have easily passed this test and can be used for this purpose.
Additional requirements of the chemical industry:
• Scratch-proof and tear-proof
• Resistant to chemicals
• UV stability
• Weather-proof
• Resistant to moisture, oils and greases
• Resistant to solvents
With its many types of adhesive, HERMA is able to offer you the right solution for even the most critical application.
UV-cured acrylate hot-melt adhesives provide especially strong adhesion, even on highly curved, rough, dusty and oily surfaces.

Solutions for any Industry
Self-adhesive Materials for the cosmetics industry
In the cosmetics industry, labels have to do more than just convey information. In no other sector are label appearance and
design so important. Labels are a primary means of advertising: they communicate the brand image, attract attention and
influence buying decisions.
In addition to design, the following physical properties are required:
CInsensitivity to water
CResistance to cleaning agents
COil repellence
CGood adhesion on small radii
CDurability
CMetallic look (high-quality appearance)
CHigh transparency
CFlexibility and pliability
CRuggedness
HERMA adhesive materials help cosmetic labels keep their decorative appearance even in tough day-to-day use.
HERMA’s new multi-layer coating technology guarantees excellent
stamping results, with no bleeding of adhesive. Minimal adhesive
tolerances ensure reliable production.
HERMA adhesives not only ensure reliable adhesion to the product
and easy dispensing, they are friendly to label printers.
18
In addition, most adhesives are certified for direct contact with
foodstuffs with fatty surfaces and are therefore safe to use.

Solutions for any Industry
Self-adhesive Materials for the pharmaceutical industry
In no other industry is reliable, accurate product identification of such critical importance. And it’s not just a matter of ensuring
that the product information is correct. The labels must also work flawlessly. This requires conscientious, professional attention
throughout the supply chain.
Thanks to state-of-the-art multi-layer coating technology, HERMA is able to apply adhesives with extreme precision and very
low tolerances (±1.5 g/m²). This technology also makes it possible to determine the tack and processing properties.
Our standard adhesives 62A, 62D, 62Z, 63B and 63Z are ISEGA-certified for direct labelling of blood bags. All of our standard
adhesives are ISEGA-certified for direct contact with foodstuffs, which means they are safe in every way.
Requirements:
Applications:
• Extremely strong adhesion
• Primary packaging
• Labelling of curved surfaces with small radii
• Direct labelling of blood bags
• Labelling around corners
• Sealing labels
• Tamper-proof
• Original closures and security labels
• Resistance to damage
• ISEGA certification for direct labelling of blood bags
(tamper-evident)
• Labels for blood collection tubes, syringes and vials
Our newest adhesive, HERMAsuperPerm 63S, was developed in our laboratory especially for original closures and security labels. Its excellent
adhesion makes it superior to other, more expensive solutions.

HERMA LAM (920)
Laser activatable Material
HERMA LAM is label paper which has been specially developed for use with CO2
lasers (colour change from white to black). Since the CO2 laser does not come into
contact with the labels, it produces no residual products which might smudge and
does not damage the paper.

CO2 lasers do not come into contact with the label and require little maintenance.
This has been demonstrated to perceptibly reduce idle times. Moreover, printing
can be carried out directly at the dispensing edge, allowing controlled allocation
of labels to products.

HERMAperfectTack (62Gpt)
The standard specialist for cool and moist surfaces!
The characteristics of the 62Gpt dispersion adhesive make it suitable as a standard adhesive for critical applications. It combines the
adhesive properties of a hot-melt adhesive (rubber-based) with the
advantages of a dispersion adhesive.
Advantages:
•Secure adhesion to moist surfaces
•Application temperature down to -10°C
•Service temperature from -30°C to 80°C
•Very high initial adhesion (tack), especially at low temperatures
•Excellent for wrap-around labelling
•ISEGA certification for direct contact with foodstuffs with fatty

We are constantly looking for new ways to manufacture adhesives
with no migration properties.
The new 62Dps dispersion adhesive represents a big step towards
this goal. The 62Dps has been tested and approved for direct contact
with foodstuffs by the ISEGA, an independent international testing
institute. The adhesive layer can make direct contact with dry, moist
and fatty foods. In addition, the adhesive properties have been
enhanced by our multi-layer coating technology. The tack (initial adhesion) is much greater, especially on cardboard and plastic surfaces.

Thanks to the innovative multilayer (double-layer) technology
it was possible to increase the cohesion and thus significantly
reduce the adhesive bleed. An ideal feed through can be achieved as well as the impurities caused by adhesive bleed can be
avoided by the use of the 62Dpc. The 62Dpc has an excellent
resistance to ageing, heat and light.
All ingredients of adhesive 62Dpc comply with recommendations BfR XIV or FDA 21 CFR 175.105 (Adhesives). The adhesive

layer can make direct contact with dry, wet and fatty foods that
have a correction factor of at least 2 according to Annex III,
Table 2 of EU Regulation 10/2011.
In comparison to 62G the adhesive 62Gpt shows a further
improved tack on cold surfaces down to -10 °C. Due to the
high initial tack even on moist surfaces 62Gpt is particularly
suited for labelling polar and nonpolar surfaces such as plastic
containers, film wrappings and other packaging materials.
The 62Gpt suits especially well for fast running dispensers, in
which the initial tack has to be built up extremely quickly as f.ex.
when the labels are blown on the substrate. Once labelled the
adhesive is highly waterproof.

labeling-processes.
Thus with 62W sophisticated label formats can be realized and
can be applied at high speeds even at low temperatures. All
ingredients of adhesive 62W comply with recommendations BfR

Adhesive 62Xpc has been produced in an innovative production
technique for synthetic face materials. Clearly better converting
properties can be reached through new developed middle layer

Adhesive 63Gpt shows excellent tack even on cold and moist

for labelling surfaces like milk bottles, plastic containers, film
wrappings and other packaging materials. Once labelled the
adhesive is highly waterproof.
All ingredients of adhesive 63Gpt comply with recommendations
BfR XIV or FDA 21 CFR 175.105 (Adhesives). The adhesive layer
can make direct contact with dry, wet and fatty foods that have a
correction factor of at least 4 according to Annex III, Table 2 of
EU Regulation 10/2011.
Adhesive 63S was specially developed to have extremely high
tack on various substrates. Because of the high final adhesion
63S is very suitable for long-term identification, for labelling of
difficult substrates and non-polar surfaces. This new kind of an
adhesive gives on various substrates like PE, PET, aluminium,
steel etc. similarly extreme high final adhesion values. Therefore
it is suitable with the right face material or security die cutting as
a tamper-evident-solution or as a seal for originality. Depending
on the substrate the final adhesion will be reached in some cases
in 24 hours. The tamper-evident-function is thus influenced by
the surface (in folded boxes from the applied varnish) and by
design of the substrate, by the design of the label and by the
conditions in the end use. 63S has a particularly good resistant
against light, heat and aging.

Adhesive 42E shows good tack and adhesion in combination
with soft and clean removability from a wide variety of substrates. Especially on plastic surfaces like PP, PET, ABS 42E can be
removed easily.
42E is also suitable for different cardboards and non-coated
glass. The adhesive allows label application at a wide temperature range and it retains its removable properties even at low
temperatures. 42E features excellent resistance to light, heat
and ageing.
Adhesive 42Upp is a microsphere based adhesive. Suitable for
applications requiring medium tack combined with excellent
removability. It is particularly suited for labelling smooth objects like books, glass or metals. However, adhesion of 42Upp
is suboptimal on rough or extremely curved surfaces. Adhesive
42Upp is unplasticized and features good resistance to light,
temperature and ageing.
Face material, shape of the label, service conditions and contact
time may have an impact on removability profile. Tests of the
printed label under actual application conditions are strongly
recommended.

Storage Conditions for HERMA self-adhesive materials
HERMA self-adhesive materials are ideally stored in original packaging
in dark and dry place in a temperature of 20 plus or minus 5 degrees
and in a relative humidity of 45 plus or minus 5 %.
If the storage conditions and the conditions at the place of converting
are different, the material should have enough time for acclimatisation. Otherwise this might lead to converting problems. Generally the
material should unpacked just before converting.
60
Synthetic self-adhesive materials should not be stored under direct
sunlight or heat, as otherwise this might lead to brittleness of the film.
HERMA self-adhesive materials should be converted systematically
based on the principle “first-in-first-out”.

HERMA approvals according to BfR and FDA
In the food and pharmaceutical industry a large number of widely
differing labels are used. The labels are either affixed to the food
packing (indirect food contact) or directly on the food itself, e.g. meat,
cheese, fruit (direct food contact). Likewise there is direct application
on pharmaceutical products (primary label) and sales packing
(secondary label).
To reduce the risk of toxic constituents of the adhesive or of the label
from migrating into the food or pharmaceutical product, the adhesive,
the label material and backing paper are checked for conformity with
the requirements of the BfR (German federal institute for risk assessment) and of the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration).
HERMA has a large number of widely differing self-adhesive materials
for you that meet the requirements of the BfR and the FDA and are
suitable for the labelling of food and for pharmaceutical products.
To check HERMA adhesive, a special label material, a specific foil or a
release liner has the approval according to BfR and FDA please look
for the appropriate data sheet. You will find them on our website
www.herma.com or please contact your personal sales representative
or phone +49(0)711/7702-0.
HERMA self-adhesive materials according to BS-5609 certificate, section 2 (resistance to sea water)
For most of the products used in the chemical industry approval
according to British Standard 5609 Section 2 is required. Compliance with this requirement means that the affixed and unprinted
label can be stored for 3 months in seawater without the risk of
becoming detached. This allows labelled containers to be transported
by sea without any problems. With the UV-acrylic based adhesive
from HERMA in combination with suitable label material, you can
meet this challenge. The following combinations of materials meet
the BS-5609 certificate.

whole new kind of multi-layer coating technology, today we already have
the capability of simultaneously coating different layers of adhesive. With
this method, we produce a broad spectrum of adhesive paper and film
products from which our customers all over Europe manufacture labels
for all kinds of applications.
Virtually all processes right through to shipment of the finished rolls of
adhesive material are fully automated – one further guarantee for our
customers of top product quality and uninterrupted availability. We inspect, test and develop in our
own laboratory. And our customers appreciate the personal service they get in their daily work.
We are not solely concerned with strategic goals,
but also with the values which guide each and
every one of our employees in their routine
work and at the same time make up
HERMA‘s corporate culture.
