CLYDE MORRISON Watertown Winter Farm Show 1 Watertown Area Chamber of Commerce AGRICULTURE COMMITTEE The Watertown Area Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee welcomes you to the 70th Annual Watertown Winter Farm Show! Join us to capture the latest in technology, know-how, and excitement of South Dakota’s ag industry. The show boasts a wide variety of activities throughout the week: daily livestock shows and sales, a state crop show, home and family programs, edu2015 Ag Committee cational presentations, a homemade ice cream contest, and even a legislative cracker barrel. We also have nearly 150 commercial exhibit booths set up in both the Codington County Extension Complex and the Park & Rec Fieldhouse. Be sure to check them out; there are some new and innovative exhibits that you will not want to miss! The Farm Show continues to grow and improve each year, appealing to all ages. Children will enjoy participating in the live zoo demonstrations and expressing their creativity in the Lego contest. And everyone is sure to enjoy the delicious food provided at the 4-H lunch counters in both buildings! In addition to organizing the Farm Show, the Chamber Ag Committee organizes, supports, and participates in many other events throughout the year. Some of these include the Adopt the First Grade Program, 4-H BBQ, and Farm-Business Appreciation Banquet. The Adopt the First Program, which takes place in May of each year, gives Watertown’s first graders the invaluable opportunity to visit local producers to experience an interactive morning on the farm. In August, the Ag Committee serves the 4-H BBQ during the Codington County 4-H Achievement Days. The grand finale is the annual Farm-Business Appreciation Banquet in November. Tickets are purchased by local businesses and given to area farmers, in appreciation for their patronage throughout the year. At the banquet, the committee awards three scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to students who have been actively involved in the Watertown Winter Farm Show, 4-H, and the ag industry, and who are currently enrolled in a postsecondary educational institution. This year, Eric Tesch (pictured at left), of Goodwin, received the Fred Morris Memorial Scholarship. Eric is currently seeking a degree in animal science and ag leadership at South Dakota State University. The tenth annual LATI Scholarship recipient was Erin Begalka (pictured at right), of Estelline, who is currently studying the large animal technician option at Lake Area Technical Institute. The second annual Gene & Mary Lois Reichling Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Halley Becking (not pictured), of Florence. Halley is currently studying animal science at South Dakota State University. Eric, Erin, and Halley were chosen for their outstanding history of scholastic achievement, extracurricular endeavors, and involvement in the Farm Show, 4-H, and other ag-related activities. The Ag Committee is delighted to be able to award these scholarships. Congratulations to them all! The Chamber Ag Committee is dedicated to its mission statement: To serve the Watertown area through the promotion of agriculture. Our programs teach young people that agriculture is a vital part of our day-to-day lives. The Ag Committee also strives to provide new opportunities and programs to inform our community about the importance of agriculture. Please enjoy the show, and we hope to see you again in 2016! 2 Watertown Winter Farm Show 2015 Watertown Winter Farm Show Dedicated to Mike & Barb Bergh By Twila Schmitt, Public Opinion Staff Writer Just outside of Florence, the Bergh family has held a tradition of farming and ranching excellence for decades. As the Watertown Winter Farm Show celebrates its 70th year in 2015, it seems fitting to honor a family that has progressed and changed with the times, much as the Winter Farm Show has over the years The Watertown Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee, which organizes the annual event, honors someone annually who has spent years contributing to its success by dedicating the farm show to their name. This year, Mike and Barb Bergh will be so honored. “The Farm Show has been a big part of our lives,” said Mike Bergh. In fact, Bergh said he purchased his first registered Angus cow at the Winter Farm Show in 1959, when it was still housed in the Auditorium. Mike & Barb Bergh, along with their son Ryan, his wife, Kim, and their three grandsons, now oversee RBM Livestock, a family operation that continuously evolves to meet the needs of the commercial producers in this area. “The Berghs have been very involved with the show over the years,” said Chuck Langner, Ag Committee Chairman for the 2015 Watertown Winter Farm Show which runs February 10-14. “They have been long-term exhibitors and supporters and really reflect what the Winter Farm Show is all about.” Mike and Barb said they found it “hard to believe” they were selected for the dedication honor. “When we think about all the great people that have been inducted prior to this – like Fred Morris, Bob Schurrer and others – we’re very humbled,” said Mike Bergh. Barb Bergh, who grew up on a farm near Wallace, said her family was always involved in the Winter Farm Show as long as she could remember. The couple married in 1972. Prior to retirement, she worked 22 years as a program technician for Farm Service Agency in Hamlin and Codington Counties. In addition to partnering with their family at RBM Livestock, the couple also works together at Bergh & Owen Auction Service. Additionally, Mike and Barb are involved in numerous church and community activities. Both Barb and Mike have served as 4-H leaders and enjoyed working the lunch counter at the Winter Farm Show together for numerous years before they became exhibitors. They have also traveled to attend numerous other shows, but Mike says the Codington County Extension facilities are superior. “I’ve had the opportunity to judge at area shows, but no other place even compares to the facilities we have here,” he said. The Berghs said the Winter Farm show is also an invaluable way for farmers and ranchers to stay in touch and keep up on the latest developments in the industry. “Times have certainly changed,” said Mike Bergh. “The technology in the cattle and farm business has changed and coming together once a year at the Farm Show helps everyone find new ideas.” While they are looking toward the future to keep their business edge, Mike and Barb also know their roots carry great significance as well. Stepping back into Bergh history, the operation started with two brothers (Maurice and Phil) operating as Bergh Bros. Each brother had a son – Mike & Larry. This operation was diversified… raising crops, cattle and hogs. The registered Angus started as Mike and Larry each purchased a bred heifer at the SD Angus State Sale held in Watertown in 1959. In 1981, Maurice and Phil (Bergh Bros.) decided that it was time for them to retire; therefore, a dispersion sale was held with the exception of the bred heifers. Each brother kept half – Mike eventually took Maurice’s interest. Phil kept doing business as Bergh Bros. It became apparent that a new name was needed for Mike, Barb and Ryan’s cow herd. “The idea came up of using each of our first initials, thus – RBM Livestock was started,” he said. RBM Livestock has grown from the original 25 bred heifers in 1981 to 300 plus mother cows in 2010, as well as, back grounding and finishing cattle. In 2006, a small group of registered Charolais cows were added to RBM. With Mike being involved with the local auction market, it became very apparent that RBM needed to raise the kind of seed stock that would be in demand at the auction markets. That became RBM’s goal – to raise seed stock for the needs of the commercial producers in this area. “The biggest reward for us is when the buyer of these cattle calls us back and wants your cattle again next year because they out did everything else he owned. That adds value to our customer’s calves,” said Mike. Rewards have also been tangible, as Mike and Barb received the 2014 South Dakota Angus Honorary Breeder of the Year award from the South Dakota Angus Association. Mike Bergh says that their operation benefits from generations of experience. While Mike’s initial education began by watching his own father and uncle’s business, he is now sharing his knowledge – while also learning from his son. There are so many reasons that Mike and Barb look forward to the Winter Farm Show every year, but the biggest one is seeing the people who come together in Watertown. “There are so many that you only see once a year. It’s a fantastic way to gather the ag and industry communities together,” said Mike. Beyond the business connections that occur, Barb added that families like theirs carry on the tradition of being involved in the Winter Farm Show. This year, the Berghs’ three grandsons (Tate, Trevor and Ty) will be exhibiting as well. “Ultimately the Watertown Winter Farm Show brings urban and rural together – and that is important for coming generations,” said Barb Bergh. BW: 4 WW: 61 YW: 112 Milk: 27 Dr. Grandin is a designer of livestock handling facilities and a Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University. Facilities she has designed are located in the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries. In North America, almost half of the cattle are handled in a center track restrainer system that she designed for meat plants. Curved chute and race systems she has designed for cattle are used worldwide and her writings on the flight zone and other principles of grazing animal behavior have helped many people to reduce stress on their animals during handling. She has also developed an objective scoring system for assessing handling of cattle and pigs at meat plants. This scoring system is being used by many large corporations to improve animal welfare. Other areas of research are: cattle temperament, environmental enrichment for pigs, reducing dark cutters and bruises, bull fertility, training procedures, and effective stunning methods for cattle and pigs at meat plants. She obtained her B.A. at Franklin Pierce College and her M.S. in Animal Science at Arizona State University. Dr. Grandin received her Ph.D in Animal Science from the University of Illinois in 1989. Today she teaches courses on livestock behaviour and facility design at Colorado State University and consults with the livestock industry on facility design, livestock handling, and animal welfare. She has appeared on television shows such as 20/20, 48 Hours, CNN Larry King Live, PrimeTime Live, 60 Minutes, the Today Show, and many shows in other countries. She has been featured in People Magazine, the New York Times, Forbes, U.S. News and World Report, Time Magazine, the New York Times book review, and Discover magazine. In 2010, Time Magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people. Interviews with Dr. Grandin have been broadcast on National Public Radio and she has a 2010 TED Lecture titled “The World Needs ALL Kinds of Minds.” She has also authored over 400 articles in both scientific journals and livestock periodicals on animal handling, welfare, and facility design. She is the author of “Thinking in Pictures”, “Livestock Handling and Transport,” “Genetics and the Behavior of Domestic Animals,” and “Humane Livestock Handling.” Her books “Animals in Translation” and “Animals Make Us Human” were both on the New York Times best seller list. “Animals Make Us Human” was also on the Canadian best seller list. Her life story has also been made into an HBO movie titled “Temple Grandin, staring Claire Danes,” which won seven Emmy awards and a Golden Globe. The movie shows her life as a teenager and how she started her career.
