Holy Day of Obligation: Friday,
Let Thy merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers
of Thy suppliant people; and that Thou mayest grant
them their petitions, make them to ask such things as
shall please Thee. Through our Lord.
SUNDAY EPISTLE: 1 Corinthians 10: 6-13
Brethren, let us not covet evil things, as they also coveted. Neither become ye idolaters, as some of them: as
it is written: The people sat down to eat and drink, and
rose up to play. Neither let us commit fornication, as
some of them committed fornication, and there fell in
one day three and twenty thousand. Neither let us
tempt Christ, as some of them tempted, and perished
by the serpents. Neither do you murmur, as some of
them murmured, and were destroyed by the destroyer.
Now all these things happened to them in figure, and
they are written for our correction, upon whom the
ends of the world are come. Wherefore he that thinketh himself to stand, let him take heed lest he fall. Let
no temptation take hold on you, but such as is human:
and God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be
tempted above that which you are able; but will make
also with temptation issue, that you may be able to
bear it.
..
SUNDAY GOSPEL: St. Luke 19: 41-47
At that time, when Jesus drew near to Jerusalem, seeing the city, He wept over it saying: If thou also hadst
known, and that in this day, the things that are to thy
peace: but now they are hidden from thy eyes. For the
days shall come upon thee, and thy enemies shall cast
a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and
straiten thee on every side; and beat thee flat to the
ground, and thy children who are in thee; and they
shall not leave in thee a stone upon a stone, because
thou hast not known the time of thy visitation. And entering into the temple, He began to cast out them that
sold therein, and them that bought, saying to them: It
is written, My house is the house of prayer, but you
have made it a den of thieves. And He was teaching
daily in the temple.
August 15, the Feast of the Assumption, is a Holy Day of Obligation.
Masses for the day will be 6:30am
(Low Mass), 11:30am (Low Mass),
and 6:30pm (Sung High Mass).
MMM Game Day: Father Lee would like to welcome
the children of the parish, ages 6-13, to play games
and have a snack from 2-4pm on Saturday, August 16
at the parish hall. We will finish with a short prayer in
the church and a blessing. Snacks and drinks will be
provided. Young people older than 13 years are welcome to come and help Father Lee. For more details,
please contact Elijah at
emundattuchundayil@yahoo.com.
This past Thursday morning, Bishop Olmsted kindly agreed to see Mr. and Mrs. Tom and Amy Walker and myself at
the chancery. Although he himself had returned late to Phoenix the night before to see his dying father, the Bishop
was the soul of hospitality. After about an hour of conversation in his office, the Bishop invited us to lunch which we
enjoyed in a private room. The Walkers and I ended up leaving the chancery around 130pm. We are very fortunate
to have such a good and fatherly bishop who takes such great interest and really looks after his own in this diocese.
Thank you to Ted Brennan for organizing and showcasing his grilling abilities at the Men’s BBQ Night last Saturday. Over twenty men showed up. Such events like this help foster and strengthen the bonds of parish life.
PAX
 Youth Meeting: Father Lee would like to meet and
play games with the youth of the parish, ages 14 and

weeks. There will be a box with dishes for pick-up near
the parish hall entrance.
 Daily Mass Stipend Hold: Please note that the
priests at Mater Misericordie Mission have a sufficient
number of stipends to fulfill at this time.
 Pro-Life Rosary, Schedule Updated Correctly:
Fr. Lee and Fr. Kemna would like to continue Fr. Terra
and Fr. Walker’s steadfast practice of praying outside
the abortion clinic on Monday and Thursday mornings.
Please join us if you are able to attend. The Rosary will

Parenthood site located at 5771 W. Eugie; and from

 Parish Directory: All families and single members
that regularly attend the Mission are encouraged to
participate, so that our parish can have more coherency, and so that the members can get to know each
other better. There is a form for this in the back of the

are interested and are a regular parishioner, please
follow the instructions on the form. The Knights of Columbus of our parish are taking over this project for Fr.
Kenneth Walker +.

August 12.—ST. CLARE, Abbess.
ON Palm Sunday, March 17, 1212, the Bishop of Assisi left the altar to present a palm to a noble maiden, eighteen
years of age, whom bashfulness had detained in her place. This maiden was St. Clare. Already she had learnt from
St. Francis to hate the world, and was secretly resolved to live for God alone. The same night she escaped, with one
companion, to the Church of the Portiuncula, where she was met by St. Francis and his brethren. At the altar of Our
Lady, St. Francis cut off her hair, clothed her in his habit of penance, a piece of sack-cloth, with his cord as a girdle.
Thus she was espoused to Christ. In a miserable house outside Assisi she founded her Order, and was joined by her
sister, fourteen years of age, and afterwards by her mother and other noble ladies. They went barefoot, observed
perpetual abstinence, constant silence, and perfect poverty. While the Saracen army of Frederick II. was ravaging
the valley of Spoleto, a body of infidels advanced to assault St. Clare's convent, which stood outside Assisi. The Saint
caused the Blessed Sacrament to be placed in a monstrance, above the gate of the monastery facing the enemy, and
kneeling before it, prayed, "Deliver not to beasts, O Lord, the souls of those who confess to Thee." A voice from the
Host replied, "My protection will never fail you." A sudden panic seized the infidel host, which took to flight, and the
Saint's convent was spared. During her illness of twenty-eight years the Holy Eucharist was her only support and
spinning linen for the altar the one work of her hands. She died in 1253, as the Passion was being read, and Our
Lady and the angels conducted her to glory.
Reflection.—In a luxurious and effeminate age, the daughters of St. Clare still bear the noble title of poor, and
preach by their daily lives the poverty of Jesus Christ.
August 15.—THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY.
IN this festival the Church commemorates the happy departure from life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and her translation into the kingdom of her Son, in which she received from Him a crown of immortal glory, and a throne above all
the other Saints and heavenly spirits. After Christ, as the triumphant Conqueror of death and hell, ascended into
heaven, His blessed Mother remained at Jerusalem, persevering in prayer with the disciples, till, with them, she had
received the Holy Ghost. She lived to a very advanced age, but finally paid the common debt of nature, none among
the children of Adam being exempt from that rigorous law. But the death of the Saints israther to be called a sweet
sleep than death; much more that of the Queen of Saints, who had been exempt from all sin. It is a traditionally pious belief, that the body of the Blessed Virgin was raised by God soon after her death, and taken up to glory, by a
singular privilege, before the general resurrection of the dead. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the
greatest of all the festivals which the Church celebrates in her honor. It is the consummation of all the other great
mysteries by which her life was rendered most wonderful; it is the birthday of her true greatness and glory, and the
crowning of all the virtues of her whole life, which we admire single in her other festivals.
Reflection.—Whilst we contemplate, in profound sentiments of veneration, astonishment, and praise, the glory to
which Mary is raised by her triumph on this day, we ought, for our own advantage, to consider by what means she
arrived at this sublime degree of honor and happiness, that we may walk in her steps. No other way is open to us.
The same path which conducted her to glory will also lead us thither; we shall be partners in her reward if we copy
her virtues.
