In a first aspect, the system, as illustrated in Figs. 1a and 2a, can be connected between an electrical power supply (102,12) and an electrical load (112,26) to form an operating circuit. When so connected, the system protects the circuit from overcurrents, has a normal operating condition and a fault condition, and comprises: a circuit interruption element (108,24) having a normal state which permits the flow of a normal current, INORMAL, when the system is in the normal operating condition, and a fault state which permits the flow of at most a reduced current, substantially less than INORMAL, when the system is in the fault condition; and a control element (104), connected in series with the circuit interruption element, the control element having a variable resistance which is low when the current in the system does not exceed the normal current, INORMAL, by a predetermined current amount, and increases by at least a predetermined resistance amount when the current in the system exceeds the normal current, INORMAL, by the predetermined current amount; the circuit interruption element changing from its normal state to its fault state, thereby causing the system to change from its normal operating condition to its fault condition, when the resistance of the control element has increased by the predetermined resistance amount. <IMAGE> Inventor • DUFFY HUGH (US) • WYNN CRAIG (US) • NICKOLS ST ELMOS III (US) • THOMAS BRIAN (US) Applicant TYCO ELECTRONICS CORP (US) IPC 1-7 (main, further and additional classification) H02H 9/02; H02H 3/02 IPC 8 full level (invention and additional information) H02H 3/02 (2006.01); H02H 9/02 (2006.01) CPC (invention and additional information) H02H 3/025 (2013.01); H02H 9/026 (2013.01) Designated contracting state (EPC) AT BE CH DE DK ES FI FR GB IE IT LI NL SE EPO simple patent family EP 1361637 A2 20031112; EP 1361637 A3 20041110 INPADOC legal status 2014-04-23 [18D] DEEMED TO BE WITHDRAWN - Effective date : 20131119 2005-07-27 [AKX] PAYMENT OF DESIGNATION FEES - Designated State(s) : AT BE CH DE DK ES FI FR GB IE IT LI NL SE 2004-11-10 [AK] DESIGNATED CONTRACTING STATES: - Kind Code of Ref Document : A3 - Designated State(s) : AT BE CH DE DK ES FI FR GB IE IT LI NL SE 2004-11-03 [RIC1] CLASSIFICATION (CORRECTION) - IPC : 7H 02H 3/02 B 2004-11-03 [RIC1] CLASSIFICATION (CORRECTION) - IPC : 7H 02H 9/02 A 2003-11-12 [17P] REQUEST FOR EXAMINATION FILED - Effective date : 20030718 2003-11-12 [AC] DIVISIONAL APPLICATION (ART. 76) OF: - Ref Document Number : 0850505 - Country of Ref Document : EP - Kind Code of Ref Document : P 2003-11-12 [AK] DESIGNATED CONTRACTING STATES: - Kind Code of Ref Document : A2 - Designated State(s) : AT BE CH DE DK ES FI FR GB IE IT LI NL SE
