The Croft Children’s Centre Opens Its Doors Don Valley MP Caroline Flint was on hand this week to open The Croft, Doncaster’s latest Children’s Centre, located at Sheep Dip Lane Primary School, Dunscroft. Ms Flint joined Headteacher Carolyn Richardson and local councillors Ken Knight and Beryl Harrison for the official opening. Said Caroline: “When families are facing a tough time, the support Children’s Centres like The Croft can offer families with young children is really valuable. This Centre is a really exciting addition right in the heart of Dunscroft.” Said Cllr Beryl Harrison: “Just a few weeks after the new Heathfield Health Centre opened its doors, this Children’s Centre is a sign of the investment the Labour Government is making in Hatfield, Dunscroft and Dunsville. I couldn’t be more proud of what has been achieved.” Said Cllr Ken Knight: “The range of activities already advertised by The Croft and the partnership with the Primary School are recipes for success. The enthusiasm for the new Children’s Centre is there for all to see. I hope parents will look in and make the most of it.” Ms Flint also had special praise for Headteacher Carolyn Richardson: “This Children’s Centre could not have found a better school to support it. Carolyn Richardson has been pushing at the boundaries of what a good community school delivers for years. The breakfast club and the family learning activities are fantastic additions to the school.” Pictures show: Cllr Ken Knight, Lizzie Tiplady, Caroline Flint, Laura Banks and Cllr Beryl Harrison. Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School News Hello again everyone, Our Spring term has got off to a good start. Lots is happening in our school. Mrs Blount is retiring at Easter and the governors have appointed a new Head teacher to take up her post already. Some pupils were involved in the appointment process and had an opportunity to question all the candidates and report their thoughts to the governors. Mrs Blount is very proud of how mature we were. We are delighted to tell you that Mrs Helen Acton, who is currently the deputy at Travis Infant School is to be our new head. Years 3, 4,and 5 have been on a visit already this term. They have been to Gainsborough Old Hall to support their work on the Tudors. A number of parents accompanied both visits. Their help was much appreciated. The children were complimented on their good behaviour which Mrs Blount is very pleased about. A new garden area is being established in school and we are going to grow vegetables. Mrs Blount made a successful bid to Scottish Power for the funding for the project. We will be planting in the Spring. We are looking forward to next week when dance sessions for all classes have been booked as well as a truck safety event. We know that our teachers are planning something for National Science Week in March. We will tell you about that next time. We look forward to updating you next month. Friend A friend is something so precious and just, Who is someone to marvel from dawn to dusk, Each small thing you do in every single way, Will make them feel happy each and every day. A friend is someone who makes you giggle, And doesn’t laugh at your attempted squiggles. They’re someone you can turn to in times of distress, They’d say something that would lead to success. Every time you do something wrong, They stand by you as if it never happened all along. Even if you have a small fight, You know you’ll make up and put everything right. A friend is someone who fills our life, With joy, pleasure and so little strife. Let’s put it this way if you lost your friend, Would you be able to live each day as content? By Tanvi Khetan There’s no doubt about it, walking is good for you. It’s good for your heart, it’s good for your lungs, it’s good for the muscle and bone growth of your children and it’s good for your feeling of wellbeing! Strong scientific evidence now supports the many benefits to health of regular walking – it is recommended that we take at least 10,000 steps a day. Studies show that walking can: Reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke Lower blood pressure Reduce high cholesterol Reduce body fat Enhance mental well being Walking offers a great way to help kids get the active habit. If parents express excitement about the prospect of a walk in the countryside, they are more likely to transmit this feeling to their children. It’s important to treat the walk as an exploration or adventure and to go at the child’s pace, no matter how often they want to stop and look at things; take treats to eat and plenty to drink; and head for some landmark that will appeal to them such as a castle, a playground, an ice cream van or a boating pond. If children experience walking as part of a fun activity they are more likely to want to go again. So, how do you find out what is on offer? John Harris, a keen walker, got fed up with the lack of information on walks in the County. So, he decided that if he couldn’t find what he was looking for – he had better create it! So www.walkinginyorkshire.co.uk came into being. www.walkinginyorkshire.co.uk gives you all the information you need for the best walking in the County: Details of more than 350 walks to download and print free, details of all the Somerset walking groups, maps and walk books – plus loads more information. So check out the website and get walking! 8 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements Be the talk of the town this Year. I’m not a pensioner so don’t get winter fuel allowance – what am I entitled to? The government announced in September 2008 that every household will now qualify for at least 50% off loft and cavity wall insulation and a range of other energy saving devices such as low energy light bulbs, real time displays and energy saver plugs are also available. 11 million lower income and pensioner households qualify for these free of charge. More information is available by calling 0800 512 012. You may be able to reduce your fuel bills by choosing a payment method which offers a discount, by efficient use of gas and electricity or by insulating your home. Check carefully the terms of the payment schemes and social tariffs your fuel supplier offers and consider switching to save. If you are in receipt of certain benefits you could access the Warm Front scheme, this provides energy advice and grants to help with the costs of home insulation. More information is available by calling 0800 316 2805. Some energy suppliers have set up independent charitable trusts which give grants to some of their customers to help them pay off arrears on their bills. I remember starting in a group called the Little Dragons and at first I didn’t know anyone but I soon made lots of new friends. We played games such as Dodgeball and other games where you need to run around a lot. My instructors were really good and taught me how to exercise, do kicks, punches and self-defence. I moved up to the Junior Basic Training group when I was 5 years old. I learned a lot of new skills and was given stars and ‘You Rock’ cards if I performed the best I could. Next, I joined the Black Belt Group. This group was much harder and I needed to do a lot of exercises to keep fit and strong. I also started sparring and for this I wore body armour, shin pads, chest guard, head guard, feet pads and gloves. To get my black belt I needed to show that I was good to other people. I had to show that I used Honesty, Integrity, Modesty, Perseverance and self Control in class, at home and at school. In the three months leading up to passing my black belt I had to do 20 sit-ups, 20 press-ups, 20 star jumps and 20 squat thrusts six days a week, 72 rounds of sparring and 100 performances of Martial Arts forms. I then had to pass my Black Belt grading which was on the 20th December 2008. On this day I went to Premier Martial Arts in Doncaster and for 2 hours I performed exercises, did Sparring, showed my self defence skills and performed martial arts forms. The instructors then told me and my family that I had passed my Black Belt. My Mum and Dad were really proud. Ben Morrell Ben has worked extremely hard over the last 4 years to gain his Black Belt success. Bens Dad and I are really proud of him. Well done Ben! Julie Morrell. If anyone would like any information regarding joining The Premier Martial Arts, Armthorpe, please call 01302 300000. There were Beavers from all over Doncaster that came together for the day. It was a cold and wet day, but that didn't worry the Beavers, as they had a great time anyway! The Museum was closed to the public, so we were quite privileged, that the museum staff gave there time for just us. We were able to ride on the vintage trolleybuses, and they even had a conductor to give us a ticket! The children were able to look around the 1950's/1960's street scene, which featured shop windows and a bungalow, so they could see what life was like at that time. They were also able to play on the old buses in the garage, and even watched Madagascar in the Cinema. We ended the day in true Scouting style, with all the Beavers getting together for camp fire songs in the trolley bus garage! Thank you Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum for making it a great day. How do you go about joining Beavers? Any child (boys or girls), who are between 6-8 years old can become a Beaver. There are groups throughout Doncaster, but the Hatfield Beaver Scout Group meets on Wednesday evenings, between 6.00pm - 7.30pm. It costs £3.00 a week for subs, but all the money is used for activities, crafts and treats for the children. The Leaders are all voluntary, and have usually become involved by their children being involved in scouting. All Scouting Leaders and Parent helpers are police checked, as with any other organisation that cares for children. For further information about the Hatfield Beaver Scout Group contact Neil Venables on 07932617759 or Charlotte Mackie on 07988793143. Or for general information on Beavers, Cubs or Scouts, visit scoutbase.org.uk on the internet. 16 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements To advertise please call 01302 770 216 or 07854 756 820 17 Forget Predator V Alien…. It’s Warren V Spiral! As an apprentice grumpy 40 year old I often look back with fond memories of my times spent at the Spiral and Warren youth clubs. There will never be a feeling like the excitement over the Christmas party’s, the obligatory dance competitions and the various sporting activities that took place the whole year round. The 2 pictures I have included in this months article show the Spiral football team from circa 1985 and Ron Greens 50th birthday celebrations at the Warren. Both Ron, Wynn Spanswick who ran the Spiral and their colleagues worked hard to provide us with such great times and fond memories that I could honestly only begin to express my gratitude. The loss of these clubs has in my opinion left a huge void in the development and enjoyment within the youth of today. Ron organised fun activities, kept order, taught valuable lessons and also enabled children to understand the true meaning between right and wrong,…without the need for counselling or a help line !, I can see now why our Sally had a teenage crush on him. Ron would have a chat, and then leave you to contemplate your actions for 10 minutes, during which time you knew that the DJ would be playing Going Underground by the Jam and Jimmy Mack in the Disco….we always apologised for our misdemeanours and made sure we knew the error of our ways. Both clubs had their own character and culture for example at the Warren you had a superb sports hall with a trampoline coupled with a darkened disco where you might be able to grab a quick snog if you were lucky. Plus there will never be a feeling like using the trampoline after Tony Smith had been on in his 5 day old socks, people seemed to want to avoid actually coming down for a while. Order and safety were maintained at all times by the staff and there was always a feeling of fun and spirit. The Spiral had the inferno discothèque complete with revolving lights, 3 table tennis tables and often hosted the “inter-club” dancing competition. Those nights were packed with young people trying desperately to win an event for their respective clubs. The Soul and punk sections were always the best to witness…I know for a fact that Jane Stokes and Julie Thompson still polish their soul dancing trophies to this day! The Spiral also had a football team which was run by one of my all time heroes Don Matthews. You will see from the picture that there was no license over hair styles at this time and that some of those pictured will be cringing into their seats. Can anyone spot the future premiership winning footballer in this picture? One of my drunken claims to fame is that Don purchased me from Duncsroft Dynamos for 3 packets of grass seed, some lawn mower blades and a kit-kat to replace him when he left the team to pursue his professional career. On a final note, I sincerely hope this months article makes a few of you remember the great times that Ron and Wynn and all the youth leaders gave you along the way. Without their hard work maybe we wouldn’t miss them so much and maybe wish that as we grow older their could still be a time to feel like I did when I got to walk Christine Halsam home from the Spiral Christmas party !! After putting on their first performance the group became known as the ‘Cabaret Crew’. Following a few impromptu Cabaret evenings there became a mutual appetite for a more ambitious production. After approaching the Hatfield Woodhouse Village Hall Committee, who were very supportive of the Pantomime venture, ‘Woodhouse Phoenix’ was born to work in association with the Village Hall, and the production of the Cinderella Pantomime began. The cast was made up of local people, some of whom had never been on a stage before and others who have had years of experience. The crew was also made up of local people including the stage crew, the sound and lighting team, the prompter, producer, props and wardrobe mistress. Every member of ’Woodhouse Phoenix’ were determined to make ‘Cinderella’ a hugely enjoyable show for everyone and the excellent teamwork throughout helped make the show a success. I went along to the Saturday Matinee performance with my two sons and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute. As we arrived, we were greeted by a very professional front of house team. We received a free programme, all the children were given a free bag of sweets and we were shown to our seats. Sponsors had donated some marvellous raffle prizes and tea, coffee and inexpensive Choc Ices were provided during the interval. I was a little worried that my youngest son may become a little restless during the performance but I was pleasantly surprised when he sat, enthralled, throughout the whole of the pantomime. The Pantomime included lots of music and singing, including some amazing singing by Claire Jennings who played Dandini. The Ugly Sisters were hilarious, Grimelda, the evil stepmother, put on a brilliant performance, Cinderella was beautiful, Buttons was loveable and by getting the audience to join in at every opportunity, the show was hugely enjoyable. The whole cast put on a fantastic performance and the music, lighting, singing and costumes were of such a high standard that the Pantomime was a great success. Sue Lane, the producer, has been involved in amateur dramatics for over 30 years, however she has never previously produced a pantomime. I’m sure everyone who saw the show will agree that she did a wonderful job. As did Michael Jackson who single handedly provided all of the music and sound effects as well as being the Musical Director and compering the evening with a sense of humour. ‘Woodhouse Phoenix’ would like to thank all the local people and businesses that supported the production in any way and everyone who came to watch each performance. They hope you enjoyed the show and look forward to putting on more performances in the future. 22 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements To advertise please call 01302 770 216 or 07854 756 820 23 DUNSCROFT WELFARE CLUB Excellent Function Room For Hire seats up to 120/130 people and is available now for you to host your special event. *Birthdays *Christenings *Wedding receptions *Anniversaries *Surprise Parties Spacious Room - Dance area - Bar. It’s an ongoing competition to be the best investor, and used to have a TV programme on BBC3. It’s based on the actual stock exchange system, but instead of investing in businesses, you invest in celebrities. The price of their shares depends on how much publicity they get. The trader who has been the most successful over the week is named Top Trader. You are given £10,000 Celebdaq pounds, and can invest in celebrities from TV, music, fashion movies, and sport. When I looked at the “Movers and Losers”, Kate Nash and James Morrison’s shares were rising, and Zac Efron and Alexandra Burke were falling! There’s also a Sportdaq, where you invest in sports stars. To sign up, go to www.bbc.co.uk/celebdaq Coming Soon to a Cinema Near You! Here are some great films that are coming to the cinema in the next few weeks: Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist— A film for all indie rock fans, about two strangers with the same taste in music who randomly meet and end up searching for the secret concert of a famous band. He’s Just Not That Into You— The first chick flick of 2009, starring Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johansson and Drew Barrymore, is about the lives of a group of friends. Bolt— A sweet Disney film about a dog (John Travolta) that plays a superhero on a hit TV show in Hollywood, and his struggle to get back to his co-star, Penny (Miley Cyrus), when he finds himself in New York. Amazon MP3 Vs. iTunes: Who will win? Amazon MP3 has arrived—a new music store to rival iTunes. Amazon MP3 has a full range of over 5 million of MP3 tracks to choose from. On average they are cheaper than iTunes (between 59p and 79p), compared to iTunes constant 79p price. And once downloaded, they are filed straight in your iTunes library and can be put on your iPod without any hassle. They have some albums at only £3.00! Once they get TV shows and movies as well, I think they will have definitely conquered iTunes! Have a look at www.amazon.co.uk, and then Music, DVD and Games > MP3 Downloads. The Eleventh Doctor On 3rd January 2009, on Doctor Who Confidential, the Eleventh Doctor was announced. I thought I’d try to find out a bit more about him. At only 26, Matt Smith is a relatively young and unknown actor. He originally wanted to be a professional footballer, but instead went into acting and was a member of the National Youth Theatre. He’s done a lot of work with Billie Piper (who played the companion of the Ninth and Tenth doctor), in The Ruby and the Smoke and The Shadow in the North, but this is his first major role. His sister is a backing dancer for Take That! He won’t be on our screens with Doctor Who until 2010, but I’m looking forward to seeing how he does. 30 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements The children at Small World Day Nursery thoroughly enjoyed performing their Christmas Nativity. The constitution of the charitable group allows for the funds to be distributed at the discretion of the committee. We would therefore like to invite applications for funds from anyone living in/or providing a service to people who live in the 4 wards of the Parish of Hatfield i.e. Dunsville, Dunscroft, Hatfield and Hatfield Woodhouse. e.g. community centres, schools, church/chapels, sporting clubs, charities etc: Applications to be received in WRITING no later than 30th April 2009 and sent to-; Mr R. Avoid Congestion Try to avoid the rush hour if possible. Cars that can travel at suburban speeds instead of an inner-city crawl save half a litre of petrol every 10miles, saving drivers 43 pence. Information is a fuel saving: small cars stuck in traffic jams use up a litre of petrol every 60 minutes, costing drivers nearly 1.5 pence every minute. Medium-sized and larger cars lose petrol and money at double the rate. Before you leave, check your route on TV, radio or the Internet for hold-ups along the way and plan an alternative route. Avoid notorious bottlenecks at busy times. Service Vehicles Keep your vehicle regularly serviced. Dirty air filters, worn spark plugs and binding brakes can increase fuel consumption significantly. Air conditioning Using the air conditioning constantly at 30mph adds 12 pence to fuel costs every 10 miles, and eight pence every 10 miles at 70mph. Cut fuel consumption and costs by moderating use of the air con. In the early morning and late evening, the air vents may do the job just as well. Park in the shade if possible. Flow with the traffic read the road ahead and try to anticipate the traffic around you (eg at traffic lights, roundabouts, junctions) and try to avoid hard acceleration and braking. Cruise control is useful and economic for smooth driving on long journeys. Under-inflated tyres Can add 2.5 per cent to fuel consumption. Check your tyre pressures at least once a month, preferably when they are cold. Idling engines Switch off the engine if you are going to be stationary for some time (eg waiting to collect someone, at level crossings). Small cars use 1.5p of petrol every minute and medium-sized cars lose petrol and money at double that rate. Lighten the load Excess baggage can add 2.5 per cent to fuel consumption. Check that the contents of your boot are actually necessary to your trip. A roof rack storage box can also add another 2.5 per cent to fuel consumption. Remove it when not needed. While it’s all still fresh in your mind why not try your hand with our 2008 quiz. We will supply the quiz and all you have to do it sell it on. This is a great fundraiser but also great to win! Half of the money you make from selling the quizzes is donated to Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice while the other half is the prize for the most correct answers. Don’t worry though if more than one person answers the most questions correctly, just choose a name at random from all correct entries. Detox Your Home With five charity shops we need a constant supply of stock, these shops are a great source of reliable income for Bluebell Wood but it is only with the support of the public that we are able to keep the shops going. Why not give your house a Spring clean and help Bluebell Wood. Donations can be taken to any of our shops or, if you have 10 or more black sacks you can call us to arrange for our driver to collect them. As well as this we also hold a number of monthly ‘Bag it up’ days at locations across the region. Our van will be at Lakeside Village in Doncaster, Dobbies Garden World in Chesterfield and Parkgate in Rotherham as well as a number of Sainsbury’s stores across the region. For details of our ‘Bag it up’ days please call the Appeals Office on 0845 108 1579 or visit www.bluebellwood.org. Stand Up It costs £2.4million to run the Hospice every year and with less than 5% of this coming from the Government the support of the local community is vital to us. A great way to donate is with a standing order. Standing orders give Bluebell Wood a reliable, predictable source of income and with no administration costs your entire donation goes into running the Hospice and supporting its children and families. You can give as much or as little as you wish, here are some ideas how your donation would be used: £5 - will pay for two home cooked meals for one - OF of our children. THORNE £15 – will pay for a hydrotherapy, multi sensory session in our Spa pool. £30 – will pay for a one hour Home visit from our Home and Conservatory Community team.
