Library staff can provide activities, books, and library information
at an event. Staff also can provide an information table, book
displays, and on-site checkout for any school occasion, such as
Reading Night, Math Night, and Science Fair orientation.
LIBRARY CARD DRIVES
The Library provides forms and assistance in registering students
for a library card. Forms available in English, Chinese, Korean,
Spanish, Vietnamese, and Urdu.
SUMMER READING
In May and June, Library staff is available to explain the Summer
Reading club, and talk about books related to the club’s theme.

BUMBLEBEE
ONCE UPON A FAIRY TALE
Compare versions of traditional tales from around the world. Test
your fairy tale knowledge! 45-60 minute presentation; grades 2-4.
BOOKS GALORE
Give your students a shot of reading inspiration with tempting
talks on books, authors, and series. Emphasis placed on newly
published books. 30 minute presentation; grades 3-5.
INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH: HOMEWORK AND PROJECTS
BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
Coordinated by Howard County Library and the Howard County
Public School System
Designed to introduce students to online tools for research and
homework. Topics include choosing credible web sites, accessing
the Library’s subscription databases, citing an Internet source, and
searching the Library’s catalog. Can include Live Homework
Help, AskUsNow, and LearnATest information. Library staff can
address specific topics, such as science fair and history day. 45
minute presentation; grades 4-5.
Battle of the Books, a reading competition for fifth graders,
engages students who love to read. Twenty-five teams will read a
total of 15 books each. During the competition, the moderator will
ask questions about the books. Each member of the winning team,
as well as the second and third place teams, will receive a prize.
SPIRIT OF AMERICA: AMERICAN REVOLUTION
Seventh-grade students read Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Speckled
Band,” then write an analytical essay. Materials available at
www.hclibrary.org and in branches in September. Deadline for
entries is in May. Winners announced at a special event in June.
Trace the beginnings of a new nation through great reading, as
you demonstrate your understanding of the Spirit of 1776. In a
“twenty questions” style game, students test their knowledge of
people, places, and events associated with the Revolution, its
pre-cursors and aftermath, and hear about related fiction and nonfiction. 60 minute presentation; grade 5.

The BumbleBee prepares students in grades 1-3 for the Howard
County Library Spelling Bee. The Library provides suggested
guidelines, lists of suggested words, and booklists to help students
prepare. The winners will be recognized at the Howard County
Library Spelling Bee.
SHERLOCK HOLMES ESSAY CONTEST
Sponsored by Watson’s Tin Box and
Barnes and Noble of Ellicott City
WORD UP! POETRY CONTEST
Cosponsored by Friends of Howard County Library
Students in grades 6-12 may submit up to three original poems to
the Library. Winners receive cash prizes, the opportunity to read
their poem at a Library event, and a printed volume of the year's
winning poetry. All entrants recognized at a Library event. Find

STORIES 101: MORE THAN JUST READING THE WORDS
Students will learn why reading aloud to preschoolers is important
and how to engage children in stories through the use of books,
props, and music. Students will learn about Library resources to
support reading aloud. 50 minutes; grades 9-12.

HOWARD COUNTY LIBRARY SPELLING BEE
Cosponsored by BB & T
Classroom and school bees for students in grades 4-8 are held
November through January. Winners advance to the Library’s
regional bee on March 14. The winner of the regional bee will
compete in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC. The
Howard County Spelling Bee is organized under the rules of the
Scripps National Spelling Bee. More information available at

DEBATE
This class combines research techniques and speaking skills to
help students participate in debates on important, interesting
topics. Students receive individual and team guidance and
coaching while competing in structured debating formats. All
participating students are invited to a spring speech and debate
tournament. 45 minutes; grades 6-8.
DEBATE TOURNAMENT
Middle school students who participate in the Debate class are
invited to compete in a speech tournament held in the spring.
Students receive individual and team guidance and coaching

LAW DAY MOCK TRIALS
Students learn the legal system by participating in a mock trial.
Interested classes can receive a template and may join a
competition that culminates on Law Day in the spring.
