Griplock’s fully adjustable Conductive Cable System is stronger than copper - more conductive than steel. The high
tensile strength of the cable allows it to both support and power any low-voltage Class 2 fixture. Conductive cables
support any class 2 application including lighting fixtures, light boxes, signage, etc. up to 100 watts, 60 volts DC (U.S.)
and 30 volts DC for Canada.
The CordFree System is offered in two cable sizes:
1/16”: the copper core of the 1/16” cable is the equivalent of a 24 AWG conductor and has a safe working load of 40 pounds.
3/32”: the copper core of the 3/32” cable is the equivalent of a 21 AWG conductor and has an SWL of 100 pounds.
Many of the type 15, 18, 25 and 30 grippers in this catalog are suitable for the CordFree System. Griplock’s engineers

Griplock designs, engineers, manufactures and distributes adjustable and fixed cable suspension systems for use in the lighting, retail
display, art display, suspended ceiling, trade show, rigging and defense industries. Since 1992 Griplock has provided manufacturers

THE GRIPLOCK® GRIPPER
The cable gripper is a fully adjustable cable suspension device for use with
7x7 and 7x19 aircraft cable only. It automatically locks anywhere on the cable
and can be moved up or down at the touch of a button. As shown in the drawings
opposite, the three ball bearings sit in three of the six grooves on the circumference
of the cable so the pressure on the cable is evenly distributed. As a result, the gripper
holds about 60% of the published break strength of the cable. Griplock recommends
a 5:1 safe working load (SWL) based upon that 60%. This makes the gripper
the fastest, strongest and simplest way to suspend lighting and other fixtures. During the
last 20 or so years, the aircraft cable / gripper combination has become the preferred
pendant lighting suspension system by manufacturers and installers worldwide.
The Griplock Gripper is precision built to our own specifications. We closely monitor
quality, and batch-test every shipment received. We continually refine the gripping
mechanism to produce better results.

GRIPLOCK’S ZF GRIPPERS
Lower cost ZF grippers in this catalog are competitively priced for use in industrial
lighting applications. ZF grippers are built to our specifications and are batch-tested
and 100% visually QC’d at our facility. Part numbers are in red, eg. ZF-15ZZ. Griplock
Systems recommends a lower safe working load (SWL) for ZF grippers than its
other gripping products. See page 35.
WHERE IT STOPS, IT LOCKS
Griplock Grippers. Sophisticated in design, simple to use:
• Insert the cable through the plunger into the gripper mechanism.
Slide the gripper to the desired position.
• To re-adjust, depress the plunger with your fingertip and move
the gripper to a new position. Release the plunger to lock.
• The 3- or 6-ball gripping mechanism is spring-loaded and allows
the gripper to move freely UP the cable. The gripper cannot move
DOWN the cable unless the plunger is depressed.
• An optional safety nut or safety cap can be added to completely
lock the mechanism in both directions. See examples on page 11.

ABOUT GRIPLOCK ® SYSTEMS

GRIPLOCK® CABLE
Griplock cables are 7x7 or 7x19 galvanized or stainless medium-to-high tensile strength aircraft cable and are factory fitted with
a variety of die-cast zinc, swaged aluminum, swaged copper or swaged steel terminals. Unless specified, Griplock terminals are
guaranteed to the full published break-strength of the cable, however, when used in conjunction with grippers, cables will have a
break strength that is less than the break strength of the cable alone. Please refer to the Installation and Weight Load Guidelines
on pages 34 and 35. In all cases Griplock recommends a STATIC safe working load (SWL) of no more than 1/5 of the
minimum break strength of the gripper / cable combination.

CUSTOM DESIGNS, ENGINEERING & SERVICE
Any combination of Griplock products can be assembled, packaged and labeled according to your
specifications. You may supply your own parts and instruction material for inclusion in your kits.
Pricing is usually lower than the cost of individual components purchased “a la carte”.
SolidWorks drawings of customer kits are available at no charge. Griplock engineering and
sales staff are ready to help you in your selection of cables, couplers and grippers. If you still
can’t find the part you need, we can design and build it for you.

The Griplock Seismic Bracing System conforms to California Building Code regulations. During a seismic event, forces
can quickly build up that may cause a lighting fixture to tear loose from its ceiling mountings. The Griplock Seismic
Bracing System is designed to limit such movement, not prevent it altogether.
System 1: A single 3/32” cable locks to existing vertical cables via the CC-UNICROSS, running up at a 45° angle to
attach to eye-bolts at the ceiling structure via the 25Z-1420-GHA.

INSTALLATION GUIDELINES

If this is the first time you’ve worked with Griplock Grippers, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION CAREFULLY.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
The information in the charts on pages 34 and 35 is not applicable to any other cable gripping product. Use of Griplock supplied cables
is assumed. Weight load guidelines and other specifications are for illustration purposes only. They should not be construed as a warranty
that the product or system will conform. Each purchaser is solely responsible for determining (1) that the product and/or system is
suitable for the intended application and (2) that the product and/or system complies with all federal, state and local safety and trade laws
and regulations. End-users are cautioned that the integrity of the structures to which these components are attached and the fasteners
used to attach them are critical to the integrity of the overall system and should therefore be evaluated by a qualified engineer or installer.
• Use only 7x7 or 7x19 uncoated galvanized or stainless steel aircraft cable.
• When feeding cable through a gripper always allow cable to pass 1” beyond the gripper mechanism. When cutting excess
cable always leave 1/2” of cable showing. Cable should be cut using purpose-built cutters as shown on page 33.
• Cable will not fray when cut unless passed repeatedly through the Griplock mechanism or otherwise overworked.
In this case trim the cable and apply a drop of super-glue.
• DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RUN AN ELECTICAL CURRENT THROUGH THESE CABLES. Use a separate power cord.

• DO NOT FEED EXCESS CABLE INTO A FIXTURE HOUSING OR J-BOX CONTAINING ELECTRICAL WIRING.
• Adhere strictly to the Weight Load Guidelines on pages 34 and 35. Use only gripper / cable combinations for
which a safe working load (SWL) has been specified, e.g. 1/16” cable with a Type 15 gripper.

• The Griplock system is generally not recommended for permanent outdoor installations. It should not be exposed
to wind or water or allowed to oscillate continuously. Avoid placing fixtures in chemical-laden environments such as
indoor swimming pools (for more information on these applications please call our office). Do not place unbraced
fixtures close to HVAC vents where they may be exposed to continual air currents. If in any doubt consult a
Griplock engineer or sales representative.
ANGLED APPLICATIONS
• Cables should not enter or exit couplers, grippers or tensioners at more than a 5° angle (above right).
• A pendant fixture exerts greater force on angled / non-vertical cables than it would on vertical cables.
To determine the force exerted on an angled cable, take the fixture weight and divide by the number of
cables. Multiply the result by the factor beneath the angle from the vertical in the chart below. If the weight
per cable is 20 lbs. and the angle is 60°, the force on the cable = 20 / 0.50 = 40 lbs. Angles over 60° from
the vertical are not recommended. For help with this please call our office.
