Northeast Community College’s
service area consists of 20 counties
in Northeast Nebraska with a total
population of approximately 162,500.
The district is nearly 200 miles in
length and covers approximately
14,400 square miles. The main campus
is located in Norfolk, Nebraska, which
has a population of approximately
23,500. Northeast has Extended
Campus locations in O’Neill, South
Sioux City, and West Point and
Regional Offices in Ainsworth and
Hartington.
Northeast Community College is a
member of the National Association of
Colleges and Employers and complies
with the “Principles for Professional
Conduct for Career Services and
Employment Professionals” adopted by
the Association.
Vision 2020, the new
five -year strategic
p l a n at N o r t h e a s t
Community College,
contains four strategic
goals. Each one is
designed to not only
take the College to
the next level and
beyond, but to prepare
our students for being
an integral part of a
globally competitive
workforce. Whether
they directly enter the labor market after graduating
or continue their education at a four-year institution,
Northeast Community College students are well
prepared for the future.
The 2015 Graduate Employment Report contains
information that illustrates the success of our
graduates. Director of Career Services Terri
Heggemeyer and her administrative assistant, Amy
Koehler, are to be commended for their outstanding
efforts in compiling this report. Year-after-year, the
staff is successful with contacting our graduates
in order to compile this report. And this year is no
different with a 98-percent survey participation rate
of the 845 graduates.
A few highlights include:
99% success rate – Northeast students who are
employed or continuing their education
82% of students are employed in their field of study
90% of students that are continuing education are
doing so at a Nebraska institution – compared to
88% in 2014
63% of students who entered the workforce are
employed in the 20 county service area - up from
60% last year.
After reading the following report, you will have
a better understanding and appreciation about
how Northeast Community College continues to
meet its mission of dedicating itself to the success
of students and the region it serves. Year after
year, Northeast provides a well-trained workforce
for the 20-county region and beyond. On behalf
of the Board of Governors, faculty and staff, it is
our pleasure to share the results of the work we
are commissioned to do on behalf of our fellow
Northeast Nebraskans.

NORTHEAST PLAYS KEY ROLE IN
CAREER SUCCESS FOR NPPD LINEMEN
As an electric utility employee for 15
years with Nebraska Public Power
District (NPPD), T.J. Rutledge knows
first-hand the importance of good
connections.
Something as simple as a line jumper
(a small connecting wire high on a
power pole) coming loose – whether
because of time, weather or perhaps
a faulty piece of equipment – can
cause havoc; wind flipping the jumper
about, sparking from one power line to
another and, ultimately, causing lights
to go out and lives to be disrupted.
Yes, good connections are vital when it
comes to ensuring the reliable delivery
of electricity.
That
same
importance
with
connections can be placed upon
people, colleges and the industries who
hire graduates, said Terri Heggemeyer,
director of Career Services at Northeast
Community College in Norfolk.
“We set great value on relationships
we’ve cultivated over the years with
entities like NPPD. We’re always striving
to place a variety of life ‘choices’ in
front of our students, and NPPD offers
an impressive variety of resources and
opportunities.”
Heggemeyer’s sentiment is echoed by
NPPD’s human resources team leader
2
Kathryn Ackman. “NPPD is fortunate to
have Northeast Community College as
an educational partner,” Ackman said.
“Our relationship has been beneficial
to both organizations and to the many
graduates of Northeast who have
grown their careers at NPPD.”
Numbers support Ackman’s statements.
Of NPPD’s slightly more than 2,000 fulltime employees, approximately 140
(or 7 percent) have ties to Northeast.
Of those, almost 90 are graduates
of Northeast’s utility line program
and another 30 are in information
technology or electronics. NPPD has
employees with Northeast backgrounds
in, among other fields, drafting, at
power plants, as safety experts, and in
both transmission and distribution line
work.
“When you look around the state,
you see many Northeast graduates at
work at all levels of our organization,”
Ackman said. “This is a testament to
the quality programs students are
provided, ensuring they are ready to
meet the challenges of the electric
utility industry.”
Opportunity and being prepared to
meet challenges are what Rutledge,
who is today a distribution supervisor
in Chadron for NPPD, felt lay ahead
of him as he began his post-high
school education. “Northeast was a
great experience for me,” Rutledge
remembers. “They (are) the school
that set the standard for a utility line
program.
“Utility line at Northeast wasn’t
a program that you could coast
through and expect a degree,”
Rutledge continues. “The faculty held
you accountable for every decision
you made. That’s precisely how any
employer would be in the real world
as well. You don’t have the option to
pick and choose what days you want
to go to work, nor can you pick and
choose what time you show up for
work, so why should you get a free
pass for those types of decisions when
you’re in school?”
Bassett local manager Todd Keller is
another (of many) NPPD feel-good,
Northeast-influenced career stories.
“I enjoyed my Northeast experience,”
Keller said. “It was more than worth
it. The instructors knew what it would
take to succeed in the electric industry,
and they made sure I had the tools and
knowledge to make a career out of it.”
Rutledge’s and Keller’s career paths at
NPPD are similar, with both starting at
Northeast.
Rutledge’s first job with NPPD was
an apprentice line technician on the
District’s York substation construction
crew. From there, he transferred to
distribution operations in Humboldt,
where he was promoted to line
technician and then journey level.
“I then transferred to York because I
wanted to be exposed to more aspects
of being a lineman,” Rutledge said,
“and being in a larger city gave me that
opportunity.”
Wanting to do even more with his career,
Rutledge went back to school, earned a
bachelor’s degree in management and
then continued on to earn a master’s
degree in Organizational Leadership
– all the while continuing to work fulltime as a journey line technician. With
sheepskins in hand, he was promoted
to distribution supervisor in Chadron,
and he’s been at that position ever
since.
Keller began his NPPD career on the
York transmission construction crew.
From there, he went to the Lincoln
Operations and Maintenance crew,
then to the Ainsworth distribution
construction crew and then to Bassett
as local manager. He attributes his
career success to the instruction he
received at Northeast and to “hard
work, willingness to move to different
areas and a family that understands the
life of a lineman.”
Speaking of families, again Rutledge
and Keller are similar. Both are married
with three children. For Rutledge, there
are his wife, Megan, and daughters
Morgan, Maci and Mylie. Keller’s family
comprises his wife, Kerry, and children
Hannah, Trevor and Cohen.
Rutledge sums it up: “Having a good
baseline to begin with at Northeast
Community
College
has
been
important in my life and career. Other
factors contributing to my success at
NPPD must start with the people who
surround me at work every day. You
are only as good as your team, and I
have been blessed to work with highly
skilled individuals, past and present,
from whom I have learned a great
deal. Northeast wants its students to
succeed. NPPD wants me to succeed,”
Rutledge concludes.
Now, that seems as though connections,
teamwork and relationships are key to
career success and well worth the effort.

2015 GRADUATES CONTINUING
EDUCATION - TOTAL: 381
Northeast graduates feel connected to the College and take pride in sharing their plans after their program of study. In fact,
for the last six years, 98 percent of graduates have responded to the survey. This gives Northeast an advantage that many
other institutions might not have, and that is the ability to accurately measure the success of our students as they pursue
their career path. The contacts are made through personal conversations, classroom visits, telephone calls, emails, mailings,
texts and Facebook. “We work hard in making the connections with students because we truly care about their success,”
says Terri Heggemeyer, Director of Career Services. “Knowing that students are succeeding in their career path ensures that
as a campus we are fulfilling our mission.”
