For the Week of: July 12 - 18, 2012 ISSUE #558 Weekly Community Magazine ~ Priceless ~ No News is “Good” News! www.heresthescoop.com | heresthescoop@shaw.ca | 403-948-5529 HELP WANTED Al Jones We’re hiring. We need several good people willing to fill temporary positions for a two-year term. Candidates should have good organizational skills, work well with others, be self-motivated and be able to improvise when necessary. They must be selfless and posses great integrity. They must have great people skills, as they will be responsible for managing and interacting with many others throughout their term. For the majority of the twoyear term, the work will be done in the evenings and odd weekends, approximately four or five hours a week. However, the final two weeks of the term will require many hours throughout the days as well. Oh yeah, at the end of the two-year term there will be no severance. In fact, there will be no salary paid to them throughout their two-year term. That’s right, folks, we want the best of the best and we want them to work for free. The above was the original help wanted ad I intended to run. After reading over it several times, I thought to myself, “Who in their right mind would apply for such a position?” I’ve surprised myself over the past week with the candidates that have already been attracted by my request for their talents despite there being no compensation. Some of them are well respected business leaders and community advocates. All of them, thus far, come with glowing recommendations and track records that would have many major corporations salivating at the opportu- Home & Auto • Business Commercial Auto • Oil & Gas Ph. 403.768-0690 Fax. 403-948-2732 Toll Free: 1-855-277-0690 #4, 532 - 1 Avenue NE Airdrie, Alberta T4B 1S1 Sparkling AUTOWASH Early Bird Special! So, what is it that allowed me to access such talents? Benefits. The benefits are unlike any offered by any insurance company. You won’t find any of these benefits listed on the Alberta Blue Cross website. And I’m very confident that you won’t find them offered by any government program. Before I list the benefits, I should probably clarify that the positions we are wanting to fill are not here at Scoop Central. When I say “we”, I’m not talking about our distribution centre or publication. Let me explain. Thanks to the hard work of a bid committee, led by former Mayor and all round good guy, Dan O’Neil, Airdrie was awarded the 2014 Alberta Summer Games. After a few weeks of celebration came another couple of weeks of hard work and deliberation at City Hall. City council and staff were tasked with appointing someone to Chair the 2014 Alberta Summer Games. Yours truly was honored with that privilege. Since then, I have reached out to some community and business leaders for some key positions. It is important that we surround ourselves with people who are not only talented and organized, but who are passionate about their community. I believe we have some of the best already committed, but despite knowing a lot of talented and passionate people, we don’t know everyone. We know there are a lot of people living in our city that would do their community proud that haven’t been discovered or approached yet. There are key Directors and Assistant Director positions that will need to be filled. Now for the benefit package, folks. All successful candidates will receive the following benefits: 1) The prestige of being a part of a high profile organization; 2) The ability to work with, and learn from, some of the best business and organizational minds; 3) The ability to mentor, teach and pass on your talents and skills to others; 4) The hands-on experience of hosting a large scale prestigious event; 5) The gratitude of your community and fellow volunteers; 6) The forming of friendships, some of which may last a lifetime; 7) Laughter…. Lots of it; and 8) Memories…. Too many to list! Interested parties should submit via email, their name, contact info, type of work they are accustomed to and what types of volunteering they have done in the past. Please email your details to SummerGames@Live.com. Passionate people need only apply. We look forward to working with you. One of the biggest musical acts in history, The Beatles were John Lennon (guitar), George Harrison (guitar), Paul McCartney (bass) and Ringo Starr (drums). Lennon and McCartney began playing together in a group known as “The Quarrymen” in 1957; Harrison joined later that year. Before they became “The Beatles”, they were also “Johnny and the Moondogs” and “The Silver Beatles.” In those early years, Lennon and McCArtney were joined at times by other bandmates including bassist Stuart Sutcliffe and drummer Pete Best. Sutcliffe left to join another group, and Best was replaced by Ringo to form the final foursome. The early Beatles performed shows in Hamburg, Germany and Liverpool, England, playing covers of early American rock and roll plus original songs by Lennon and McCartney. With hits like Love Me Do, She Loves You and movies A HardDay`s Night (1964) and `Help!`(1965) Beatlemania was boosted with a worldwide celebrity status.
