ANNUAL REPORT
“Together, we have the
power to change lives.”
Dear Friends and Alumni
I
am always struck by the number of people in the community who approach me at
events, functions and even the grocery store, to comment on the impact Dutchess
Community College has had on their lives or those of their loved ones. Part of our
region’s educational, cultural and social fabric for almost 55 years, the College has touched the hearts and minds
of tens of thousands of our friends and neighbors. Few institutions have had the privilege of serving our community so
positively and profoundly for decades.
I hope you share my pride in our faculty and staff, who each and every day, help students reach their potential and
equip them for success at a four-year college, in the workplace and in life. A recent letter sent to me by an alumna of
the class of 2000, regarding her wonderful experience at DCC – particularly as a student of newly retired History
Professor George Stevens – clearly illustrates the role the College plays in shaping lives. Now a professional who holds
a Master’s degree, she wrote: “I didn’t expect enlightenment of such duration when I signed up to take this [Professor
Stevens’] class. I never knew I would relish being a student, as I was a 30-year-old nontraditional student. I came to
DCC a broken person; I graduated an empowered woman with a degree and so many goals to reach!” Personal
stories such as this often come my way, and they always are welcome confirmation of why we are here.
The important work continues. I am happy to report that nearly 10,500 students enrolled at Dutchess Community
College in fall 2012, continuing a three-year trend of record enrollment. Ours remains the college of choice for
college-bound Dutchess County high school graduates, with 37% choosing to enroll at DCC directly after graduation.
Our new residence hall (opened in fall 2012) provides additional opportunities for students who wish to combine the
benefits of a community college education with the experience of living on a college campus.
At the College’s 53rd commencement in May, associate degrees and career certificates were conferred on almost
1,200 graduates. It is interesting to note that more DCC graduates than ever are transferring to four-year colleges,
which indicates that our students are motivated, well-prepared and successful.
The College has earned a reputation for providing an outstanding education while, for the 13th consecutive year,
charging the lowest tuition in New York state. While this makes DCC more accessible than most other colleges, many
of our students are facing difficulty in these challenging economic times.
You can make a very real and lasting difference in the lives of deserving students by making a donation in support
of Foundation scholarships. More than 150 DCC students received scholarships totaling $110,000 at our 2012
Convocation. Through the generosity of our alumni, faculty, staff, community and others who are committed to
educating the next generation of DCC graduates, we hope to continue expanding our scholarship program.
Together, we have the power to change lives. Thank you for your support of our students, DCC and the Foundation.

“With more than 60
programs offered, we
are the only solution
for so many!”
Dear Friends of DCC
W
e truly are blessed here at DCC! We have fabulous and dedicated instructors, hard-working
staff to support them, more than 10,000 students, and an administration and President who
always work to enhance educational opportunities and keep them affordable for area
residents. Our Foundation’s partnership with the College brings together your donations
with the College’s efforts to provide a high level of teaching and outstanding educational opportunities.
Many of our students are struggling to pay for their education and continue moving toward their degree.
We at the Foundation depend on gifts like yours to help them succeed. A majority of our students stay in
the Hudson Valley after graduation, or return to our area after completing a four-year degree elsewhere.
DCC helps workers in our area continue to be cutting-edge in their fields; whether it is in nursing, the arts,
marketing, technology or countless other fields. With more than 60 programs offered, we are the only
solution for so many!
The Foundation is so fortunate that alumni, business owners and other loyal supporters continue to help our
students every year! We thank you for your generous gifts, be they large or small, current or a bequest, a
restricted scholarship or an unrestricted donation that is used where the funds are most needed.
Thanking you, in advance, for your future gifts and for your past support.

“We continue to move
forward with confidence,
because of the loyalty
and dedication of our
extraordinary community.”
Dear Friends of DCC
I am pleased to present the Annual Report for 2011-2012.
W
e are so thankful for our Alumni giving, which increased by 20% over the year before and,
in the last 10 years, has increased a whopping 185%. This is incredibly important as the
Foundation continues to fund more than 200 scholarships each year valued at $380,000
collectively. We are proud of our support for the students of the Hudson Valley, and you too
should be proud!
Friends and faculty/staff of the College are another group of terrific donors. In the last 10 years they have
contributed more than $2,600,000 and our emeriti faculty donated nearly $1,000,000. We are overwhelmed
by this generosity. Thanks to the support of so many like you, who reached into your pockets and found
room in your hearts, even in these uncertain financial times, to give even more than in the past, we have
accomplished a lot.
Watch for new alumni events in the coming year! We want to welcome you back to campus and get to
know your families. After all, you are the face of DCC every day in the community. Your support is
crucial.
We continue to move forward with confidence, because of the loyalty and dedication of our extraordinary
community. You are the tangible evidence of the contribution DCC makes to the Hudson Valley! The
future could not be brighter, and I am grateful for all that you do to make it so.

Dear DCC Alumni and Friends
A
llow me to introduce myself; my name is Luke Cierniak. It has been an honor to
serve as this year’s Student Government Association (SGA) President and as the
Student Trustee on the Dutchess Community College board. I am pursuing a
double major in Criminal Justice and Business, and will receive my associate
degree in Criminal Justice this May.
I came to Dutchess Community College in the Fall of 2010 after taking a year
off from high school. Performing poorly in high school had soured me toward continuing my
education, but thanks to a few of my friends, I was encouraged to attend.
My first semester I had little to no interest in attending my classes nor did I have a drive to really excel academically. I never
talked to any of my fellow students in class and when my class was over I would just go home. I finished my first semester with
a 2.7 GPA, and as a student who never did really well, I thought that was pretty good. My second semester was almost an
exact repeat of the first, with the exception of talking to my peers and some professors. By the end of that spring semester I
had become more comfortable with who I was and where I was going, and I owe a great deal of thanks to one professor,
Barbara McArdle. She approached me about joining the Criminal Justice Club (CRJ Club) and becoming its president. This
was something I knew nothing about. I was terrified of fellow students looking at me to dictate the club’s future. Ever since that
day, my life has turned around.
I went from doing nothing with my time and not wanting to excel to not having enough time and wanting nothing more than to
get straight A’s. I came to realize the importance of getting involved and stepping out of your comfort zone. If it wasn’t for that
one moment I don’t know where I would be today. Through the CRJ Club I found SGA and learned what exactly it meant for
the students and the campus. I saw the power that the SGA had to make a positive difference, not only on campus but in the
community as well. I became very active in the events that were held on campus and became friends with many of my fellow
students.
This year as the Student Government President, I carry with me what Mrs. McArdle sent my way - encouragement. For the
fall semester we had a record number of senator applicants; we have raised money for several charities, including the Students
for Students Emergency Fund, the Hurricane Sandy Relief Drive and Toys for Tots. Currently we are planning many other
events and activities to help the community and encourage others to give back. I could not be more proud of my fellow students
for all of their hard work and dedication; without their help none of our initiatives would have been possible.
As a scholarship recipient (Dr. D. David Conklin Scholarship for Student Leadership) I am very grateful for your generosity
and continuing support of this amazing college. Dutchess Community College not only has provided me with an outstanding
education, but it also has shown me the power of community, and has given me the tools and support to find my path. I have had
the honor and privilege to work alongside other students who are recipients of scholarships and I am constantly being reminded
of how grateful they are for these awards. For many students a scholarship is the deciding factor that enables them to continue
their education.
In conclusion, I would like to thank the Foundation for all of its hard work and generosity and the Alumni who, like you,
generously give each year to create and fund these scholarships. These awards not only allow students to continue their
education at an outstanding college, but also help them become better community members by teaching the values of giving
back and helping those in need. I can say firsthand that your generosity has helped me become who I am, and I will continue to
do my part and give back. I am proud to say that soon I will be a Dutchess Community College Alumni.

Joe Porter (center) and Joe Hill (right), pictured at graduation, became friends at DCC and followed similar
paths, transferring to Cornell University after graduation. Each credits the resources and people at DCC with
preparing them to move into the ivy leagues.
“DCC is a place with abundant resources that can assist a student’s development, regardless of their academic
pursuits,” said Porter. “The faculty and staff encourage students to ask questions and to challenge themselves.
Every professor that I encountered taught not only the material, but universal skills such as time management and
good study habits.”
Hill also has found his time at DCC to be rewarding. “At DCC, a wide range of on-campus experiences helped
me thrive,” he said. “Intellectually stimulating classes, academic resources, a beautiful campus and the fellow
students with whom I made invaluable friendships, all combined to prepare me for Cornell.”

County’s Top Graduates Earn
Full Scholarships
Thirty-nine Dutchess Community College
freshmen were awarded the 2011 Charles E.
and Mabel E. Conklin Scholarship for
Academic Excellence last fall. When
combined with the Conklin scholars who
began at DCC in fall 2010, a record 80
students benefited from the initiative last
year. The Conklin Scholarship provides full
tuition for any Dutchess County high school
student who graduates in the top 10% of his
or her class. Conklin scholars have gone on
to top four-year colleges – including Cornell,
RPI, Smith, Vassar, Marist and SUNY schools
- after graduating from DCC.
The scholarships were established 17 years
ago through the DCC Foundation and subsequently funded by Charles and Mabel
Conklin.
Lecture Series Brings Luminaries
to Campus
Dr. James Waller, professor and Cohen
Chair of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at
Keene State College in New Hampshire, came
to DCC in December 2011 to discuss
“Becoming Evil: How Ordinary People Commit Genocide and Mass Killing.”
In Waller’s presentation, and book of the
same name, he explored both historic and
current acts of genocide and the multiple
factors that influence human behavior and
can lead to acts of mass killing.
His book was short-listed for the biennial
Raphael Lemkin Award from the International
Association of Genocide Scholars. In addition, Publisher’s Weekly praised the book for
“clearly and effectively synthesizing a wide
range of studies to develop an original and
persuasive model of the process by which
people can become evil.”
12
The lecture was arranged by DCC History
Professor Dr. Werner Steger, recipient of
the Greenspan Trust-Handel Foundation
Endowed Chair in Holocaust and Genocide
Studies. The event was sponsored by the
DCC Foundation.
Vassar College Sociology Professor Diane
Harriford came to DCC in March 2012 to
give a lecture about the importance of
broad-based education titled “Liberal Arts
and the Community College Student.”
The discussion focused on how diverse
offerings can illuminate new opportunities
for students, and advanced the belief
that college should be viewed as more
than a place to build skills before starting
a career.
Dr. Harriford had been an assistant to
former Congresswoman Bella Abzug. She
also worked closely with the Coalition of
Labor Union Women. Currently, Dr.
Harriford is involved in the National
Women’s Studies Association among other
groups. She has taught sociology, women’s
studies and African American studies at
Vassar for more than 20 years.
The lecture was presented by the Llelanie
Orcutt Endowed Faculty Chair and
facilitated by Dr. Navina Hooker, a
professor in DCC’s department of English
and Humanities.
Jeff Shesol, historian, communications
strategist and former speechwriter for President Bill Clinton, gave a presentation called
“Supreme Power: FDR’s Court Fight - and
Barack Obama’s” in April 2012.
Shesol discussed the battle between
President Franklin Roosevelt and the
conservative majority of the Supreme
Court, which rejected the major principles
of the president’s New Deal, prompting
Roosevelt’s subsequent strategy to pack
the court with liberals. In addition, Shesol
talked about President Obama’s relationship
with the Supreme Court and its decision on
campaign spending and deliberation on health
care reform.
Shesol’s most recent book is called “Supreme
Power: Franklin Roosevelt vs. The Supreme
Court.” His previous book, “Mutual Contempt: Lyndon Johnson, Robert Kennedy and
the Feud That Defined a Decade,” was a New
York Times Notable Book of the Year and a
Washington Post Critic’s Choice. He was
Deputy Chief Speechwriter for President
Clinton, playing a leading role in creating two
State of the Union Addresses among hundreds of others between 1997 and 2000. A
Rhodes Scholar, Shesol earned his master’s
degree from Oxford University.
The lecture was sponsored by the Handel
Family Endowed Faculty Chair to
Perpetuate the Legacy of Franklin and
Eleanor Roosevelt, Dutchess Community
College and the Gillespie Forum. Shesol was
invited to campus by Dr. Andrew Rieser,
associate professor in DCC’s History,
Government and Economics Department.
More Than $100,000 in Scholarships
Awarded to Students
At the Honors Convocation in May, 150 students either starting their second year at DCC
or graduating and entering four-year colleges
in the fall, were recognized for outstanding
achievements and received scholarships totaling more than $110,000. More than $1.1
million in scholarships has been awarded
by the DCC Foundation in the Convocation
ceremonies since they began 16 years ago.
The scholarships are funded by individuals
and organizations to reward academic
excellence. To learn more about establishing
a scholarship, contact the DCC Foundation

A New Chapter in the History of DCC Begins:
Students Move Into New Residence Hall
When 465 excited students — boxes, suitcases and supplies in hand and parents in
tow – moved into Conklin Hall on August 25,
2012, it marked a momentous event in their
lives, and in the history of DCC. Six years in
the planning, the new, on-campus, suite-style
residence hall is the first at any community
college in the region, although more than half
the community colleges in the state now have
— or are in the process of building —student
housing. It is expected that in the next four
years, all but a handful will offer housing to
enable students to combine the quality,
affordability and other benefits of a community college education with the experience of
living away at school.
Unlike most freshman and sophomore housing, Conklin Hall has large suite-style units
(averaging 1,100 square feet) with assorted
bedroom configurations, two bathrooms,
kitchenette (with full-sized refrigerator, microwave and sink) and living room. It also features lounges on each floor, a multi-purpose
atrium, fitness center, laundry facilities, cable
television and wireless Internet service and
other amenities. The residence hall — which

Planned Giving
Even 1 Percent Matters
Why Give a Percentage of Your Estate?
You may think you don’t have enough money to
donate and make any kind of impact, but that
simply isn’t true. Your gift, no matter the size,
can ensure a future for Dutchess Community
College and influence the lives of those who rely
on it.
Put it this way: The majority of American adults
give to a charitable organization each year—
even in these tumultuous economic times.
Meanwhile, only 8 percent of charitable giving
dollars in 2010 came from donations made
from wills.1
Yet, giving through your will won’t affect your
current income.
For those of you who want to help Dutchess
Community College, but don’t know where to
begin because of time or money limitations, a
bequest in your will or revocable living trust is a
great place to start. It also allows you to make
contributions—similar to annual donations—
after you’ve passed.
beneficiary—by dividing up your assets in
percentages—on your life insurance policy or
retirement plan assets. Simply contact your
insurance company to ask how you can change
beneficiaries in your life insurance policy. In
the case of retirement plan assets, ask your
retirement plan administrator for a change-ofbeneficiary form.
If you give annually and want to extend your
support for our work, these are smart ways to
leave a lasting legacy without affecting your
income, and they still allow you the flexibility to
change your mind in case your circumstances—
or the economy—changes.
Ask your estate planning attorney how to
set these up, or contact Trish Prunty at
(845) 431-8402 or prunty@sunydutchess.edu.
We’re here to help.

If your children are the beneficiaries

By putting aside a percentage of the assets in

can leave a legacy with DCC Foundation, while
making sure your family has the security they
may need in the future.
