MARSHALL, A Governor’s STEM Academy Courses

Aerospace Science
(1 Credit)
Students study aerodynamic principles, aviation history, electrical and mechanical systems, flight operations, safety and security, air traffic control,
airport design, economic impacts, rocketry, and satellite and space operations. Numerous lab activities include computer simulators, robotics, and
model aircraft design and testing.
Auto Technology
(1 Credit)
Students will study and learn from curricula designed by Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) which includes electrical electronics, brakes, steering
and suspension, and engine performance. Students will troubleshoot and perform diagnostic analysis of late model vehicles and may qualify for
SkillsUSA student competitions.
Chinese
(1 Credit) (Levels Offered: 1, 2, 3, 4, AP/ IB)
Students will study the Mandarin dialect and develop proficiency in the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Higher level
students will have sufficient knowledge of Chinese characters to interpret the content of assigned readings dealing with abstract concepts. Cultural
topics such as art, politics, and literature may be studied.
Cosmetology
(2 Credits, Every Day)
The two year cosmetology program provides an in-depth study and training on hair styling and cutting, coloring, straightening, and design.
Additionally students will learn how to care for skin and nails with an emphasis professional ethics. At the end of their second year, students will sit
for the State Boards and may earn their VA Cosmetology license.
Criminal Justice
(1 Credit)
The course prepares students for career and college opportunities within the criminal justice system. Specific areas of training will be provided in
criminal law and investigation, security training, communications, emergency response, crimes, search and seizures, arrests, crime prevention, court
procedure and police operations.
Introduction to Culinary Arts
(1 Credit)
Culinary Arts 1 (2 Credits)
Students will learn the basic skills needed for a career in the hotel or food service industry. Topics include sanitation, hot food production, meat
identification, and knife skills. Students will prepare original sauces, salads, desserts, and learn baking, reducing, and grilling techniques. Students
may earn their ServSafe certification and college credit.
Cyber: Computer Systems Tech 1 A+
(1 Credit Every Other Day)
Students will learn the operation and capabilities of both the hardware and operating systems of today’s computers and digital devices. They will
install components and troubleshoot system operations utilizing system tools and diagnostic software. Students prepare and sit for the Comptia
A+ Certification exam.
Cyber: Network Administration
(2 Credits, Every Day)
learn hands-on IT Computer Management and they set-up Client/Server and WAN/LAN networks in a “real-world” lab Students design. Students
install, implement, and manage operating systems for Clients, Servers, and Domain Controllers. Students learn Network and Cyber-Security.
Industry Certifications: Comptia Network +
Cyber: Routing & Switching, Cisco
(1 Credit)
Students will design, install, configure, operate and troubleshoot computer networks. Topics include network architecture, industry standards and
communications protocols, networking devices (such as routers and switches), media selection, topologies, data transmission and cabling for
LAN/WAN networks. Students prepare for Cisco Certified Entry Level Technician (CCENT) after the first year and Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
after the second year.
Cyber: Security + Capstone
(1 Credit)
Coursework provides students with the framework and knowledge to protect an organization’s cyber assets. The program focuses on prevention,
detection, countering, and recovery from cyber incidents. Students develop an understanding of system threats and risks, system protections,
network vulnerabilities, network defenses, and wireless network security and controls. Industry certification: CompTIA Security +
Entrepreneurship
(1 Credit)
Have you ever wanted to be in your own boss or to take something that you are passionate about and make money while you do it? This is the class
for you if you want to learn how to create a business plan, travel to New York City, be a real business owner and experience putting profits in your
pocket. You may earn 3 college credits for each level from NOVA while you earn a high school credit. Join us to see how you can have fun while
learning how to make money.
Geographic Information Systems (new for 2015-16 school year)
(1 Credit)
STEM Robotic Systems
(1 Credit – weighted .5 Honors credit)
Students explore GIS software and global positioning system equipment and data and employ models/guidelines for integrating, interpreting,
analyzing, and synthesizing data. This exciting technological development integrates remotely sensed (information collected from a distance) and
ground-based information into powerful decision making analytical tools.
Take your engineering interest and knowledge to the next level! Students investigate computer circuits, digital electronics and microprocessor
theory. Special topics include hands-on robotics and advanced electronics systems control and manufacturing. Opportunity to participate in
robotics competitions including VEX and First Robotics!

What is the difference between Marshall High School and
MARSHALL, A Governor’s STEM Academy?
MARSHALL, A Governor’s STEM Academy is a "school within a school” that offers a variety of specialized and technical
courses to highly motivated students in Fairfax County Public Schools. Classes are blended with students from
predominantly 7 High Schools in 13 course areas. We provide students the opportunity to obtain highly desirable industry
recognized certifications, licensure, post-secondary course credit, and valuable career experiences with local business
partners and leading national organizations in the greater Washington metropolitan area.
It is our mission to provide a student-centered learning environment that emphasizes hands-on learning, critical thinking,
college preparation, and career readiness. We are a performance-based educational institution which collaborates across
industries to keep up with trends in the industry and post-secondary education.
MARSHALL, A Governor’s STEM Academy classes are open to students in all grade levels if you are able to fit the class
into your schedule (Both 1 credit and 2 credit classes are offered).
MARSHALL, A Governor’s STEM Academy Courses REQUIRE an application!
1.
Fill out the Academy Application with your school counselor
(more information under the “Admissions” tab of our website)
2. All application materials must be submitted by your school counselor to the academy
by March 18th
3. You will be notified in May if you have been accepted or waitlisted into the academy class.
Admissions decisions are based on a variety of factors with current attendance and interest in
the course being the most important.

Visit - Come see for yourself!
Visits provide students the opportunity to experience the class first-hand, learn about course requirements and
expectations from the teacher, and see all that Marshall, A Governor’s STEM Academy has to offer. Visits occur during the
regular school day (through a pre-arranged absence in one of your current classes) and are available to students
Tuesdays and Thursdays from January 5th – February 25th. See your school counselor to arrange a visit. Seeing a class in
action can be really helpful in making your decision, but visits are optional.
Marshall Academy Open House for interested students and parents - Thursday, January 21th 8:30-3:30pm. The day will
include opportunities for parents and students to meet our teachers and see our state of the art classrooms and
laboratories.
