A Lone Star
College System
Endeavor
“Lone Star College
System has several
workforce training
programs that are
specifically designed for
the trade skills needed
in the oil and gas
industry. In addition,
we have a tremendous
opportunity to come
together with other
colleges and universities
in the U.S. Gulf Coast
region to serve as the
intellectual capital that
will provide key oil and
gas training programs
to the workforce
of multinational
corporations.”

Carpenter, LSCS
Chancellor
A Dynamic Learning Center
Based on over 20 years of success in the energy and
manufacturing training and education sector, the opening of
the Lone Star College Energy & Manufacturing Institute (LSCEMI) sets new standards for producing highly-skilled, and
well-trained workforce, locally and globally. LSC-EMI offers
Lone Star College industry partners unparalleled access
to state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories designed to
prepare tomorrow’s energy technicians for the workplace.
Using the latest industry-standard equipment and software,
students learn cutting-edge techniques and processes through
simulations and in classes where low student-teacher ratios
allow for personalized attention and supervision. LSC-EMI
provides entry-level training options to learners looking
to enter the energy and manufacturing sector, and offers
opportunities for advancement for those already employed
in the industry.
With extensive input from energy and manufacturing
industry partners, all instruction and equipment are relevant
to current industrial needs and this cooperative environment
contributes to a comprehensive menu of continuing
education services. Whether training takes place at LSC-EMI
or on-location at plants and corporate offices, corporations
work closely with Lone Star College to design courses that
meet their needs and enrich the knowledge-base of their
incumbent worker populations.
Facilities
LSC-EMI is located at LSC-University Park in the new 70,000
square foot building. LSC-EMI also operates satellite sections
at all of the Lone Star College campuses. The LSC-EMI
facility houses 28 labs, five classrooms, and two simulation
rooms – designed to serve a larger student population and
meet the growing training needs of its industrial partners.

Laying the Groundwork for Success
Education and training at LSC-EMI is offered in Foundation
Courses, HSE, Machining, Manufacturing, Engineering
Technology, Maintenance, Energy Technology, Quality,
Computer Technology, Logistics, Welding, Language
Skills, English Language (ESOL) for the Workplace, Project
Management, Frontline Supervision, and more.
These programs give students a strong foundation in
scientific concepts and emphasize exposure to real-world
laboratory and industrial processes and equipment.
Meeting Training and Education Needs
Houston, known as the Energy Capitol of the world, is home
to thousands of energy-related companies covering every
segment of the oil and gas industry, alternative energy,
power generation and distribution and chemical plants and
refineries.
According to the Greater Houston Partnership,
manufacturing is also an important component of the
health of the Houston-area economy, with more than 5,100
manufacturers employing more than a quarter of a million
skilled workers.
As these corporations, and those that help support them in
related industries, project their workforce and training needs
into the future, they are faced with a shrinking pool of skilled
employees. Fewer and fewer young people are choosing
relevant technical careers, and current workers often require
extensive retraining in order to operate the latest equipment
efficiently and safely.
The goals of the Lone Star College Energy & Manufacturing
Institute also include efforts to specifically meet those needs
and help train the energy and manufacturing workforce of
tomorrow.
