Employers in this sector tend to be more open to so-called Quereinsteiger. On 28 September 2010, the German Government presented its new energy plan which puts renewable energy in a central role in the future energy mix of the country. The Government wants to raise the share of renewable energy sources in power generation from the current 16% to 80% by 2050. In October, it was reported that Germany added 660MW of new wind capacity in the first six months of 2010, raising the country’s total to 26.4GW. Compared with installations totalling 802MW in the first half of 2009, this represents a reduction of nearly 18% and is “lower than expectations,” according to president of the German wind energy association. The German offshore wind sector, however, received a major boost in October, with news that Sweden’s state-owned utility, Vattenfall will invest in excess of €1b in a huge new offshore wind farm in the North Sea. Vattenfall has entered into a JV with German utility Stadtwerke München to build the DanTysk project, which will have an estimated installed capacity of 288MW and is due to start construction in 2012. In September, the European Investment Bank (EIB) announced it was considering a loan of up to €500m for a 288MW German offshore wind farm, to be developed by EnBW Energie BadenWurttemberg AG at a total cost of €1.2b. Global Player Solarvalley Mitteldeutschland Even if your German is not perfect, please have a look at the links to employers in the sector, which you can find at the end of the article! Neben dem Fraunhofer-Centrum für Silizium-Photovoltaik CSP als Forschungsinstitut in Halle sind in der Initiative Solarvalley Mitteldeutschland unter anderem namhafte Photovoltaikfirmen wie ErSol Solar Energy AG (Erfurt), QCells (Thalheim), Roth & Rau (Hohenstein-Ernstthal), SolarWatt AG (Dresden), SolarWorld AG und Deutsche Solar AG (Freiberg), sunways, Wacker Schott Solar (Jena) und von Ardenne (Dresden) eingebunden. http://www.wind-energie.de/en/The German wind energy association http://www.ampair.com/ampair/jobs.asp Jobs http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/rea/magazine magazine http://www.lowcarbon.com/ jobs http://www.environmentjob.co.uk/ jobs http://www.environmentjobs.co.uk/ another job site Settling in Germany Advice on living and working in Germany ADVICE FROM A SERVICE LEAVER WHO HAS JUST FOUND A JOB IN GERMANY The main advice I would pass to people is that it is just as valuable to let a company see you and experience what you could 'bring to the table' just as much as being able to show you have some qualifications behind you (to show CPD). For those people that are thinking about staying in Germany, my main advice would be for them to get in to speaking German and also writing the odd e-mail in German as well. Most of the time I have to write and communicate in German but I do also have to translate back in to English for our partners and investors in UK. I think that anyone getting out and going in to a management role will more than likely (in this day of open markets) have to prepare themselves for much of the same scenario. BRITISH VETERANS’ INSTALLATION ACCESS PASS HQ UKSC is pleased to announce that the Under Secretary of State and Minister for Veterans has agreed that this HQ can issue BFG Installation Access Passes to British Veterans living in Germany.
