Cabinet Cooling Solutions
Studies show 250% over-cooling is required when hot air is uncontrolled*
Without heat containment, hot air mixes with cold, leading to gross over-cooling. R.F. Mote addresses this problem by
focusing on containing hot or cold air to improve cooling efficiency by up to 40%.
Solutions for containing heat and preventing air mixing within the cabinet begins with the installation of Airstop Kits to
prevent air escaping around the equipment rails. Blanking Panels to fill empty Rack spaces as well as Top Entry Brush
Kits to block air passage from around cable entry.

Once hot and cold airflow is isolated through the cabinet, the next step is to provide a path for the hot air to be
removed from the cabinet. There are many options to achieve this. Perforated doors allow for IT equipment
fans to exhaust hot air out of the cabinet. Exhaust Fan doors and top of cabinet standard duty fan units can also
be deployed to manage airflow in lower heat load environments.

Aisle Containment
In order to optimize thermal performance as heat loads rise in data centres it is necessary to isolate hot and cold air
within the room. R.F.Mote solutions such as Hot or Cold Aisle Containment and passive or active Chimney Cabinets
block air escape routes and contain hot or cold air pathways this eliminates hot spots, prevents air mixing and
increases overall efficiency.
Aisle Containment
In a hot aisle cold aisle configuration End of row doors and ceiling containment panels are used to contain
either the Hot or Cold Aisle. Air escape routes are blocked preventing air mixing within the room. This
increases air conditioning efficiency by creating a higher Delta T or difference in temperature between
return air and supply.
HOT AISLE Containment. Hot exhaust air is isolated and directed back to the CRAC/CRAH unit.
COLD AISLE Containment: Cold air supply is isolated preventing it mixing with hot air within the room.

Maintaining Airflow
Since many Aisles are not perfect, row fillers may be used to block empty spaces between cabinets.
Custom valences overcome differences in cabinet heights and cabinet to floor seals block air escape routes under
cabinets. Floor grommets and CRAC Collars further enhance air flow dynamics within the room by blocking air
escape routes around cable openings and containing warm plenum air while directing it back to the AC unit

Solutions for equipment with side to side airflow
Equipment with side to side airflow poses a challenge to traditional hot aisle cold aisle configurations that are
designed to move air from front to back. Side car duct extenders bolt to the sides of RFM series cabinets and provide
an extra 6” of clearance for intake and exhaust air. Intake air is directed from the font of the sidecar to the side of
the equipment while exhaust air is directed from the side of the equipment out the rear of the sidecar duct.

Cabinet level and Row containment
Working with Geist, R.F. Mote has developed our AgileAir Ducted Cabinet
Solution capable of handling a 30kW heat load in a single cabinet. Our cabinet
level containment cooling philosophy centres on two critical components:
1) Containing heat
2) Expelling heat directly back to the CRAC units
This two step focus maintains the ideal temperature for data centre equipment.
The first step is addressed by expertly manufactured chimneys and enclosures.
The second step relies on sophisticated temperature and pressure sensors to
control fan speeds and exhaust hot air through the chimneys at the most
efficient rate. The combination of hot air containment and intelligently controlled
fan speed creates a consistent climate controlled environment in the data centre
and within the cabinet rows.
Chimneys and enclosures capture hot air and expel it beyond
the cold air surrounding the cabinet rows.
• Eliminates hot air mixing, wrap around heating, and hot spots
• Bypass eliminated, 100% use of cooled air
• Complete hot air separation enables highest CRAH/CRAH
return air temperatures.
• Suitable for slab or raised floor environments
• 1:1 air flow balance makes cooling over provision unnecessary
• Allows for more densely populated cabinets
Maximize IT density and lower operating costs
by relentlessly controlling hot air; automated
feedback cuts total fan energy by 40%.
• Contains and evacuates 100% of the heat; no mixing with
cooling simplifies the cooling circuit
• Heat exhaust direct from cabinets eliminates cool air bypass
• Maximizes chiller plant efficiency with highest possible return
air temperature (Delta T)
• Maintains a perfectly controlled and consistent IT environment

Cabinet level and Row containment
Sophisticated temperature and pressure
sensors control redundant fan speeds to
exhaust hot air through the chimneys at
the most efficient rate
Plug and play fan units make for easy installation and maintenance.
Scalable design allows for passive units to be converted to active as
needs change
Load Sharing
• Multiple units work together to share cabinet loads
• Operational redundancy increases as systems work in concert
• In the event of utility failure, heat continues to be exhausted
by cooling unit connected to your UPS
• If a fan is shutdown for maintenance or repair the load
transfers to others in the row
Automated control
• Automated load balancing eliminates micromanaging airflow
requirements
• Automatic notification of system threshold breach via email
or SNMP
• Environmental conditions reported automatically
• Embedded software allows for real time monitoring of heat
load, temperature and alarm conditions for each unit
• User friendly dashboard for quick viewing of performance data
• Integrates with DCIM software
Scalable Capacity
• System capacity automatically scales as loads are
added or removed
• Automated load sharing returns all heat directly
to return air plenum
• High density loads can be directly coupled for
single cabinet isolation
• Load sharing leads to lower cost per deployed kW,
allowing all fans to run at energy efficient speeds
