READING OUT LOUD...“ONCE IN A GREAT CITY: A DETROIT STORY” - Are you a former
Detroiter, or did you live in the Detroit area for any period of time? If so, you’ll be fascinated by the book
we’re reading out loud today. It’s 1963 and Detroit is on top of the world. The city’s leaders are among the
most visionary in America, it was the American auto makers’ best year and the revolution in music and politics
was underway. Despite all this, Once in a Great City shows that the shadows of collapse were evident even
then. Today’s chapter looks at the excitement of Motown music and its influence on the world. Re-kindle
memories and re-experience the joy of being read to when Megan Raphael and Karen Anderson continue
through this great book. Missed some or all of the book we have already read? No problem; each one is a

*NEW HISTORY DOCUMENTARY* HISTORY OF DETROIT: “DETROIT MOB
CONFIDENTIAL” - In great anticipation of David Mariniss, author of the bestseller, Once a Great City: The
Detroit Story, who is coming to speak to Cordia on October 6th, we will be showing Detroit-related videos and
movies over the next 10 days. Today’s program, Detroit Mob Confidential, looks at Detroit's La Cosa Nostra
Family, who was, in many ways, the most successful crime family in the United States. Typically, the media
only refers to the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa when talking about the history of the mafia in Detroit.
Producer Scott Burnstein, however, wanted to chronicle the deeper history of Detroit’s mob, and his film
explains how the Detroit mafia "family" created actual blood ties through the marriage of their sons and
daughters to the offspring of other reputed Mafiosi in Detroit and throughout the United States. This is a
glimpse into Detroit’s past that often doesn’t get spoken about. If you have any association with Detroit growing up there, living there for any period of time, etc. - you will thoroughly enjoy this fascinating
documentary. Join Megan Raphael from 4:15-5:45pm in the Theater. Run time: 1 hour , 28 minutes.
Not closed captioned.

NEUROSCIENCE OF OUR DEEPER YEARNING” - All the yoga, meditation, deep breathing, and
exercise won't keep you conscious when you're in the grips of your mindless habits--your soft addictions. We
all have soft addictions--whether it's procrastinating, over-shopping, overeating, too much TV...the list is
endless. These seemingly harmless habits that we so often overdo not only cost time, money, and energy, but
they also drain our productivity, numb our feelings, and mute our consciousness. The only reason we turn to
our soft addictions is that they are trying to let us know about something we yearn for -- it's just that they don't
deliver on that yearning. But if you wake up and pay attention, you can learn to design your life around these
deeper needs. And when you do, amazing things happen. Not only do your bad habits start to drop away, you
also save money, lose weight, have more energy, get more time in your day, and....you design a life of
consciousness and mindfulness. In this compelling presentation, Dr. Judith Wright shares the research and
neuroscience behind our deeper yearning and how you can use that information to not only let go of your soft
addictions, but also to create a spectacular life. Join Megan Raphael 10:00-11:00am in the Theater.
