The vision of St. Norbert School is to find God in all things through learning, faith and service.
St. Norbert School hosts a variety of events for students, parents, families and the community
throughout the year. The more involved families can be, the stronger the community. With many
demands and interests competing for your time, we are committed to offering rewarding opportunities
and creating awareness about them so that you are able to participate in as much as you are able.

Council, while many are also organized by parent-driven organizations such as the Home & School (H&S)
Association, Athletic Committee and School Advisory Board. See the committee or event leader for
more information on the items listed below, or on events that may not be included here. Most classspecific events are not listed here – please see the teacher or room parent.

Details
This time is open for Kindergarten students as well as new students in 1st-8th grade, with his/her
family. These students are encouraged to visit to meet teachers and get more information about
the school year. Registration is not needed. H&S will also have a used uniform sale.

meet to plan for the upcoming school year, and all enjoy a nice lunch.

Welcome back! The first day of school for Kindergarten through 8th grade students. This is a full
day of school. Don’t forgot your school supplies, the summer reading and math homework sent
out at the end of last school year, and the forms due back from the June and August packets.
Please join the school for a brief prayer service in the gym, just after 8:00.

Virtus Training. This training will be at St. Norbert in Grace Hall. Registration is required – go to

The new Kiddos lunch service starts on Tuesday, September 8th. For lunch the week of 9/07, orders
need to be placed online by 9am on Mo 8/31 (the open ordering is due by 9am on Monday for the
NEXT week at www.kiddoscatering.com). Kiddos is available to full day preschool and K-8th grade.

An evening for parents to get more information about the 2015-16 school year. All parents are
encouraged to attend in preschool through 8th grade. Please come meet the new principal as well
as the teacher and parents from your child’s class this year. This is an event for parents. The
evening starts in the church then moves to the school.

The Crusader Team Challenge (CTC) Pep Rally is an assembly that kicks off the CTC which will take
place on September 25th. The 2015 CTC student teams will be announced. Parents and siblings are
welcome to join us! In the St. Norbert Gym.

Children in Kindergarten - 7th grade at another school are invited to accompany a current student
to get a first-hand look at a day in the life of a St. Norbert student. The guest needs to bring a
completed permission form and a lunch. A personal tour or shadow day can be arranged for an
alternate day throughout the school year.

Let’s celebrate the new school year and meet families in the school community with a potluck
social after the 11:30am mass. All preschool families, including siblings, are welcome. In Grace
Hall.

School pictures will be taken of all students, preschool through 8th grade. Afternoon preschoolers
will take photos shortly after they arrive. These pictures will go into the school yearbook. This is an
out of uniform dress-up day for students, following the Student Handbook guidelines – please
don’t wear green due to the screen used. Please bring your order form and payment if you would
like to purchase photos; if you ordered online, please let the teacher know. Picture retake day will
be Thursday, 11/05, 9-10am. If you should decide on the need for a retake, please remember the
picture packet must be returned in order to have pictures retaken. The class composite photo is
distributed after the pictures from retake day are processed. In Grace Hall, north.

Eighth grade students from St. Norbert and neighboring Catholic schools will gather to learn more
about developing and demonstrating leadership skills. Students will take a bus to St. Joseph School
in Wilmette. (School pictures will be taken first thing in the morning.)

Whole school, team-based challenges during the day and evening, including food, music and
teacher competitions. Fun for the whole family! The evening is open to all school children and
their families. Pre-registration encouraged. CTC is also the primary fundraiser of the Home &
School Association and Athletic Committee.

visit the school in the afternoon to talk about his life and experiences in Catholic education to our
5th–8th grade students.

The Cook County Department of Health will be at St. Norbert School to screen students’ vision and
hearing. Students in preschool, Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 5th grade, 8th grade,
and students new to St. Norbert School are required to be tested. Parents must complete the form
sent home and return it to school by no later than Friday, October 16th.

A school spirit pep rally to celebrate the football team and homecoming game scheduled for
Sunday, October 25th. The 2015-16 Spirit Stick will be awarded! In the St. Norbert Gym. Open to
parents and siblings.

Classes choose a theme and decorate a pumpkin for the contest. Starting Th 10/29, raffle tickets
can be purchased for 50 cents through Student Council and entered to win the pumpkin of choice.
On Fr 10/30 winners will be selected for each pumpkin.

A fun adults-only evening with teams competing in trivia and costumes with food and music. If
you have not attended Trivia Night before, consider getting more information about it from
someone who has. Open to the school and parish community. Pre-registration encouraged. In the
St. Norbert Gym. Doors open at 6:15pm to setup food and decorate tables. Games begin at
7:00pm. This year’s theme for costumes and decorations is Halloween – gather your team and
start planning!

Football game with Homecoming Tailgate for the whole school community on Sunday, 10/25, at
Loyola Academy (1100 Laramie Ave, Wilmette, IL 60091). The Varsity game will begin at noon
followed by the JV game at 1:30pm, St. Norbert/Sacred Heart Vaders vs. Wilmette Catholic.

St. Norbert School will have a Children's Book Drive 10/26-11/13, for new and gently used
children's books for ages birth through 6th grade. (Please, no workbooks, text books or reference
books.) Collected books will go to Bernie's Book Bank, a non-profit organization that distributes
the books to children via schools and social services organizations in the Chicagoland area to
support children’s literacy. The class to collect the most books will receive a pizza party!

In conjunction with the upcoming Book Fair, students across the school are asked to earn coins or
dollars to put books in the hands of kids at our school and in other communities. This annual
service project is in partnership with the “Scholastic All for Books” program in which the school
gets books for our library and Scholastic matches the collection by donating books to students
across the country through two established non-profit organizations. A Ziploc bag with a note and
red ticket inside were sent home through school take home folders for this worthwhile collection;
please write your student’s name on the back of the red ticket to be entered in a drawing.
Students in 4th and 5th grade are participating in this program through a fun cross-class
competition called “Penny Wars.”

In honor of national Red Ribbon Week, all students are asked to wear something red with their
school uniform (e.g. socks, sweater). Red Ribbon Week brings awareness to schools and
communities about the dangers of illegal drug use. For more information, visit

All Souls Mass

Courtesy of the 2015 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks, come see the Stanley Cup in the
St. Norbert Gym! Pre-registration is encouraged. Space will be limited and priority line access will
go to those who pre-register. For a donation of $20, you may have a professional photo taken
with The Cup with up to 5 people in your picture. Beneficiaries of the event are the non-profit
organizations Northfield Food Pantry and EASING (Emergency Aid Serving Northbrook and
Glenview). Food and beverages will be available at the Courtside Café. The Blackhawks game will
be on and viewable in the Gym. More details are available on the school website.

Students may wear costumes, following the guidelines provided by the school and individual
teachers. We will have a parade around the outside of the school (weather permitting) at 1:30
PM – open to parents and siblings. Some classrooms will have a party.

The St. Norbert / Sacred Heart Junior Varsity Football Banquet will be held on Sunday, November
1st, 4-5pm, in the St. Norbert Gym, while the Varsity Football Banquet will be held on Monday,

siblings please – with reservations requested. Dinner is served.

If you have excess candy from Halloween or otherwise, please bring it to school by Friday,
November 6th. The candy will be packaged and mailed to an organization that sends it to troops
overseas. Please send the candy in a bag to avoid messes.
Post event note: Thanks to the generous contribution of the St. Norbert School community, we
sent 188 pounds of candy to our Troops! Students helped to sort and prepare the candy to be
shipped. A big thank you to Kati Spaniak and @properties for paying for the shipping.

In conjunction with the candy collection for our troops and in celebration of Veteran’s Day on
November 11th, students (and parents) are welcome to send a letter or drawing to Service
Members. Students should only include first names. Please send loose letters or drawings to
school by Tuesday, November 11th (no envelopes please). These wonderful expressions of thanks
will be included in care packages distributed by the organization Operation Gratitude. For more

Post event note: The school sent 145 letters/drawings that will be included in care packages

visit St. Norbert School to meet with our 3rd - 5th grade students. Students from both schools will

and writing letters to our soldiers.

have not attended Virtus Training already, please register. If you are unsure if you have
completed the in-person Virtus training, ask Mrs. Huettl. To register, go to the archdiocese
website www.virtus.org > create a log-in > click on “Live Training” on the left pane. Registration is
required – no walk-ins. In the Church basement.

Annual free throw shooting contest for preschool through eighth grade with food, music, and
prizes. Preschool through 2nd grade will compete individually; while 3rd through 8th grade will
compete as a team with a parent. The schedule for the free throw shooting contest is PreschoolKindergarten 6:00-6:30pm, 1st-3rd grade 6:15-6:45pm, 4th-6th grade 6:45-7:15pm, and 7th-8th grade
7:15-7:45pm. No registration needed. In the St. Norbert Gym.

A school-wide Thanksgiving potluck lunch, all preschoolers through 8th grade. Students and
teachers are each asked to bring a specific type of item to share. The item will be assigned by
grade level, and teachers will provide the turkey. All parents, grandparents and siblings are invited
to join us from 12:00-1:30pm in the school gymnasium. Students will be dismissed at 1:30pm.
Please do not order Kiddos hot lunch for this day. Please RSVP for the Potluck Lunch by Monday,
November 16th.

Early Dismissal for Thanksgiving Potluck Luncheon
Following the Thanksgiving Potluck Lunch, students may dismiss early with a parent. After Care
will be available starting at 1:30pm. There will be no charge between 1:30-2:45pm. Regular After
Care rates will apply at 2:45pm. Please email Mrs. Philbin at dphilbin@stnorbertschool.org if
your child/ren will be attending After Care so she can plan for coverage.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Preschool through 8th grade. Please register on-line for your reserved time(s). Conferences are
generally scheduled for 15 minute increments 8:00-11:35am and 12:40-5:55pm with 5 minutes for
travel between appointments.

Thanksgiving Holiday
The Root Beer Float party is an annual event in honor of our beloved Father Valker’s birthday. The
floats will cost $2.50 each, and pre-order is required by Monday, 11/30. Proceeds go to Catholic
Relief Services/Operation Rice Bowl in memory/honor of Father Valker.

The student organization, Friends of Rachel (FOR) Club, will lead ‘Differences Awareness’
workshops with 4th - 8th grade students during religion class. The workshop will allow students to
see the way that people are treated based on their differences. The St. Norbert FOR Club is part of
the national Friends of Rachel program based on 17-year-old Rachel Scott who was the first
student killed at Columbine High School in 1999. Rachel left a legacy of reaching out to others who
were different, who were picked on by others, or who were new at her school. This workshop will
further her ideals at our school. Eighth grade FOR members will lead with the 7th grade class on
Thursday, 12/03, during religion class; the FOR members will lead with 4th-6th and with 8th grade
classes during religion on Friday, 12/04.

A family holiday tradition that includes decorating your own Gingerbread house, Christmas Carols,
Santa and a pizza dinner. Visit with other families and get in the holiday spirit! Registration
required; the registration deadline is Friday, November 20th. Open to the school and parish. In St.

After our all school mass, students will gather in the gym to take a picture for our school
Christmas card. Students may bring Santa hats, Christmas sweaters, red or green shirts, etc. to
wear for the picture over their uniform. The students will bring these items to school on Tuesday,
and then put them on after Mass. The students may wear the shirts/sweaters for the remainder of
the day after the picture. Preschool children can come to school dressed in red or green.

Stop in for the 9th annual St. Norbert Christmas Café! The breakfast café is put together by the St.
Norbert Second Grade class. The students go through a mini job process with interviews, job
descriptions and preparation to plan for and run this holiday event. This event is open to the
school and parish community. No registration needed. In Grace Hall. Note – the Christmas Café
was moved from 12/07 to 12/09 due to the school cancelation on 12/07.

The annual Christmas Program performed by the students. An afternoon dress rehearsal and the
evening performance are both open to families. With roles for preschool through junior high, this
annual event – with a new story this year – is always special. The 4th grade will perform the play
“A Christmas Star” with technical help from 5th grade, Preschool through 3rd grade will sing, the
school band will perform, and the school choir will sing. Registration is not needed. Please come
enjoy this holiday program!

The School Advisory Board sends a message to parents about this once-a-year Teacher
Appreciation Fund gift collection for the school teachers and staff. The contributions are collected
by early December so the teachers and staff may receive this gift from the school community
before the Christmas holiday. Rather than buying individual gifts for your child’s teacher, we
encourage you to participate in this tradition to provide a Christmas bonus to all members of our

Students in Pre-3 through 2nd grade are invited for 8 weeks of instructional basketball in a fun and
supportive environment. The 8 sessions will be on Saturdays, 9:30-10:30am in January-April, with
sessions on 1/23, 2/06, 2/13, 2/20, 2/27, 4/09, 4/16 and 4/23. What is Biddy Basketball? The
game of biddy was developed to teach both boys and girls the skills and fundamentals of
basketball. Allowing smaller balls, shorter baskets, and closer free throw lines, younger students
are able to develop the skills and interest for playing basketball at an early age. We get down to
the basics and make sure they are having fun learning them through various games and activities.
Volunteer parents are the coaches. Registration is required, due by Friday, November 20th. In the
St. Norbert Gym.

The Annual Free Throw Shooting Contest for children ages 9 to 14. Students may arrive anytime
between 1:00 and 3:00pm. Each kid shoots 15 free throws. The highest scores by age group will be

Students collect change to help fund research for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Classes
compete to earn a lunch at school provided by Olive Garden. A few weeks in January with money
due by Fr 1/29.
Post event note: The school raised $1,590.92 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society – thank
you! Seventh grade won the Olive Garden lunch, raising $576.62.

Each year every child at St. Norbert in Kindergarten through 8th grade writes an essay about
his/her father or a father figure. The essays are written at home and submitted to school. The
school then submits the essays to the annual Illinois Fatherhood Initiative/Chicago White Sox
Fatherhood Essay Contest.

Veterans from the Vietnam, WWII and Iraq/Afghanistan Wars will share their experiences with

started around town. The goal is to locate the 14 numbered St. Norbert puzzle piece posters at
vendors in the community and write down the location where that piece number was found. Each
student that correctly locates the pieces and submits the completed form by Monday, 2/29, will
receive an out-of-uniform pass.

An annual night of poetry, usually with 7th grade students sharing poems and 8th grade students
performing monologues. The St. Norbert Gym is setup like a cabaret with small tables, so invite

Leisl Shurtliff, author of the popular book RUMP: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin and the new
book JACK: The Story of Jack and the Beanstalk, will talk to students in 3rd – 8th grades about being

enter a bookmark contest to win a lunch with the author. Students may bring or pre-order a copy
of one of Ms. Shurtliff’s books for her to sign.

Full school is dismissed early. Conferences are optional and available for Kindergarten through 8th
grade – preschool conferences will be 05/13. Closer to the date, register on-line for your reserved
time(s). Conferences are generally scheduled for 15 minute increments 12:00--5:55pm with 5
minutes for travel between appointments.
An annual service project, children receive cardboard ‘rice bowl’ boxes to collect coins during Lent
to help feed the poor in our Archdiocese and in the developing world. The rice bowls are returned
on Palm Sunday, 3/20, or they may be returned to the school Fr 3/18 Th 3/24. Students will learn

The sacrament of First Eucharist is generally completed in 2nd grade for St. Norbert School
students. Various First Communion preparation activities occur throughout the school year,
including a rehearsal the evening of Wednesday, 4/27. First Communion is part of the regular
mass in St. Norbert Church.

This is a time for the children to thank their teachers for all that they do for them throughout the
school year. Please have your child decide what they would like to do such as draw a picture,
write a card, pick some flowers, bake something, etc. So that teachers receive something each
day, room parents will suggest the day that each student will bring a "thank you" to his/her
teacher.

The all school mass includes a special May Crowning Ceremony in the church. The eighth and
second grade classes lead the school in this beautiful tradition of honoring Mary. Following the
ceremony is a reception in Grace Hall for eighth-graders and their parents.

Students in Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade from our sharing parish school, St. Margaret of
Scotland School, and our school will meet at The Chicago Botanic Gardens for a joint field trip.
Students from both schools will have the opportunity to meet while participating in a day of
activities.

In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of St. Norbert School, which started in September 1917, our
school will have a float in the Northbrook 4th of July Parade. Families are invited to reach out to
Rhonda Schaller to participate in the preparation and event.

Recurring Events
 The Crusader of Kindness Winner is announced each month, near the beginning of the month,
based on submissions/nominations from other students, teachers and staff for acts of kindness
performed by students at school. The winner, as well as a sampling of other nominations, is
displayed on the St. Norbert Stars bulletin board in the front lobby. This program is facilitated by the
student group Friends of Rachel (FOR) Club, led by Ms. Pittman.
 Masses
o 8:30am each Tuesday is All School Mass, unless communicated differently (e.g.
Grandparents’ Day, All Souls Day, Ash Wednesday). Children in Kindergarten through 8th
grade wear mass attire as defined in the Student Handbook, unless otherwise
communicated. Preschool students attending on mass days also attend mass each week.
Students sit with their buddy from their partner class. Grades rotate each week in
participating in specific roles during mass such as greeters, lectors and presenting the gifts.
Students are encouraged to bring a food item or paper product to donate to the parish food
pantry each week, if you can.
o 9:30am on Sunday is the Family Mass, options are expanding starting 9/20/15. Now every
week for preschool through 8th grade students. See the parish website for more information.
 St. Norbert School Choir, available to students in 3rd – 8th grade. Practices are each Thursday 8:008:30am in the Music room; starting February 2nd, practices will move to Tuesday morning at 8:00am
in the church. Students will participate in the choir during all school mass on alternating weeks,
singing one week and sitting with their buddy on the other week.
 St. Norbert School Band, available to students in 4th – 8th grade, with rehearsal in the gym each
Thursday 7:30-8:15am and lesson groups scheduled during the school day on Thursdays. Working
with the music teachers, students may participate in both band and choir.
 Variaday, out-of-uniform days on the last Friday of each month. Sponsored by Student Council.
Students are asked to give 50 cents per variaday, or $5 for the school year, to participate. Note, an
‘out of uniform pass’ may not be used on a mass day.

 Nine Class periods – The school day is based on nine, 40-minute periods with homeroom time at the
beginning and the end of the day and a few minutes for transition in-between each period. After
8:00-8:05 in the homeroom, P1 is 8:05-8:50am, P2 is 8:52-9:32am, P3 is 9:34-10:14am, P4 is 10:1610:56am, P5 is 10:58-11:38am, P6 is 11:40am-12:20pm, P7 is 12:22-1:02pm, P8 is 1:04-1:44pm, P9 is
1:46-2:26pm and the day concludes with home room 2:26-2:45pm.
 School Lunchtime for K-8th grade is split into three lunch periods with the following volunteer needs
(approximately 70 volunteer spots per month):
o 11:30-11:55 first lunch period for Kindergarten/1st/2nd – 2 volunteers needed
 Kindergarten/1st/2nd students have recess after lunch
o 11:58-12:18 second lunch period for 3rd/4th/5th grades – 1 volunteer needed
 3rd/4th/5th grade students have recess before lunch
o 12:22-12:42 third lunch period for 6th/7th/8th grades – 1 volunteer needed on Mo & Fr (only)
 Junior High has recess after lunch
 Full Day Preschool Lunchtime (pre-3 and junior kindergarten) is around 11:30am, following recess.
 Lunch Bunch is an optional program available to half day junior kindergarten students on Mondays
and Fridays, 10:45-11:45 am and led by Mrs. Philbin.
 Kiddos Hot Lunch Ordering remains open at www.kiddoscatering.com; however, orders must be
placed by 9am on Monday morning for food service the NEXT week. Hot lunch service starts Tu
9/08/2015, and Th 5/26/2016 is the last day. The lunch program is available to full day preschool
and K-8th grade students. Due to timing, it is not available for preschool ‘lunch bunch’.
 Students in 3rd – 7th grade are invited to participate in grade-level lunch groups with Ms. Pittman.
The lunch groups give students a safe space to participate, listen to one another and support each
other through activities and discussions related to day-to-day issues they are experiencing. Any
whole group issues that come up can also be addressed during group and a problem-solving
discussion will be facilitated. Ages and times are based on student interest:
o 3rd grade boys group – every Wednesday lunch
o 3rd / 4th grade girls group – Thursday lunch, rotate every other week
o 4th / 5th grade boys group – Tuesday lunch, rotate every other week
o 6th grade girls group – every Friday lunch
o 7th grade girls group – every Thursday lunch and recess
 The Rainbows group meets on Wednesdays during 7th period, 12:22-1:02pm. This group, led by Ms.
Pittman, is designed to help young people better understand their feelings related to recent
significant life changes, develop coping strategies, manage feelings in a healthy way, and support
each other.
 The Friends of Rachel (FOR) Club, comprised of 7th and 8th grade students, and led by Ms. Pittman,
meets on Tuesdays during Junior High lunch and recess. FOR Club is a leadership and service group
that helps our school and community by promoting kindness, compassion, and caring – particularly
when someone is new or ‘different’. As a supplement to the FOR program, the St. Norbert FOR Club
also uses the "We Act" program to focus our service projects around one local and one global issue.
 Young Rembrandts is an optional enrichment art class available to half-day pre-3 and half-day junior
kindergarten students. The program is held at the school, and led by outside art instructors, on
Wednesday mornings 10:45-11:45am.

 Before care starting at 7:00am and After care until 6:00pm, Monday – Friday on regular school days.
Please contact Mrs. Philbin with specific schedule questions, particularly around holidays and early
dismissal days. More information about the Stay at School program is on the school website.
 Family Dining Night – The St. Norbert Athletic Committee hosts a family dining night at a local
restaurant most months. They are an opportunity for families to gather and eat out together (or
carry out food to take home) while a portion of the proceeds go to the school. Open to all families
and guests. Please bring the flier with you!
 Coffee with the Principal, 8:00-8:30 am – Stop by for coffee and conversation with our Principal,
Ms. Adamski, on the first Friday of the month October–May, excluding January (moved to 1/15) and
April when there is not school on those days.
 Faculty meeting – after school on Wednesdays 3-4pm.
 School Advisory Board meeting – first Monday evening of each month (closed to board members).
o New Board members for next school year. Generally, the School Advisory Board seeks one
or more new Board members each year, as terms of current Board members expire. Usually
a letter is sent out to parents in the spring. If you are interested in serving, please contact an
Advisory Board Member for an application.
 Home & School (H&S) Association meetings are open to all St. Norbert School families. H&S
meetings will be held on the first Thursday of each month at 8:30 am from September through June,
unless otherwise communicated. Changes, if applicable, will be shared via school news updates.
Please enter through the front door of the school. Please join any time after morning drop-off for
parent social time 8:00-8:30 am before the meeting! If you would like to attend, but are unable to
make it in person, please contact Rhonda Schaller (rschaller71@gmail.com) for a possible call in
number.
o Election of officers for next school year. The H&S nominating committee will be named in
the March H&S meeting, planned for 03/03/2016. The vote on next year’s H&S Executive
Officers will be in the May meeting planned for 05/05/2016.
 Athletic Committee meeting – third Monday evening of each month (closed to committee
members).
 Religious Education (RE) Classes – RE program classes meet in the school most weeks during one of
the following three times: Monday 4:30-5:45pm, Monday 6:15-7:30pm, or Wednesday 6:15-7:30pm.
 Sports Team practices and games – please see the Athletics page on the school website for more
information (Football, Cheerleading, Cross-country, Volleyball, Basketball, and Track & Field).
 PowerSchool updates – PowerSchool is an online resource to view student grades and attendance.
Teachers update the system periodically. Parents may access the information from the website or
app. Parents create their own account and then link to their children; the student account
information can be obtained from the school.
