THIRD GRADE NEWS COM ARTS MATH SOCIAL STUDIES September 16: Fundraising packets due September 23-27: Book Fair September 27: Elementary “Country Hoedown” Word Study: We will be working on Unit 2 Part 1 this week. For this unit we go to 16 words each week. We will add long i sounds this week with “igh” words. Monday we will read pages 28-29 and complete page 30. Tuesday will be page 31, Wednesday page 32, and Thursday will be page 33. Reading: This week we will read a story about Roberto Clemente. We will work with the strategies of visualization and identifying cause and effect. Monday we will preview the story and read it as a class. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday students will read the story again with a partner, individually, and a small group depending on the day. They will have various activities to complete depending on their reading group and the day. Writing: This week we will create an easel book to summarize our biography about Roberto Clemente. Students should be able to identify important events in the life of Roberto Clemente in order to write a summary of the story. The easel book will be due on Thursday, so students may need to finish their summary on Wednesday night if they don’t complete it in class. Students should be writing in complete sentences with correct punctuation and capitalization. Cursive: Tuesday we will complete pages 30-33 and Thursday will be pages 34 and 35. We will learn the undercurve, the downcurve, the overcurve and the slant strokes this week. We will continue working in chapter 2 this week. Monday we will complete lesson 2-2 to continue working on problem solving. Tuesday we will learn to estimate sums in lesson 2-3. Wednesday will be lesson 2-4 and two-digit addition. Thursday will be lesson 2-5; students will “go shopping” as they add money. Students will use the “store” in our math reference book as they try to spend money to get as close to $10 as they can without going over that amount. Friday we will work with three-digit addition in lesson 2-7. We will begin a worksheet in class. If the worksheet is not finished in class, it will be their homework. Monday we will complete our paragraph description of the longhouse for our Iroquois flag book, and then we will begin looking at clothing. Students will learn what the Iroquois clothing looked like and what materials were used during three different time periods: pre-European influence, post-European influence, and modern dress. They will create two flags for the flag book—one for male clothing and one for female clothing.
