Their sole purpose is to provide light and to show the path of egress in the event of an emergency. Assuring these life saving devices are operable and functional is the responsibility of every business manager and building owner. The last thing you want to be doing during a power outage is noting malfunctioning exit signs and emergency lights. Cintas professionals ensure that, if your facility goes dark, your emergency lighting will function properly. Our Testing MONTHLY, Our technicians: • Check • Verify AC ready light is on • Verify lamps are equipped and connected to battery backup • Test 8 for physical damage to the unit and verify the lamps illuminate when the test switch is depressed (30 second hold) AnnualLY, Our technicians: • Check for physical damage to the unit • Check operation of unit by activating the test button • Open the unit and check tightness and cleanliness of battery terminals • Measure the battery integrity by conducting a 90-minute burn test • Verify lamps are working and aligned correctly • Replace • Clean defective parts as needed and wipe down the unit Every Other YeaR: • Replace bulbs and batteries as necessary where the life cycles have diminished Consider This • A fire at the Fine Line Music Cafe occurred on the night of February 17, 2003 when a band's pyrotechnics ignited a fire in the ceiling. Despite extensive property damage, 120 patrons were escorted to safety within two minutes. •Three days later, a fire at The Station in West Warwick, Rhode Island took the lives of 99 people and injured more than 187. When they realized the club was on fire, most patrons tried to leave through the main entrance. Bodies were found stacked at the door. Properly functioning exit signage and well-lit paths of egress save lives. 9 KITCHEN HOOD SUPPRESSION SYSTEM TESTING & INSPECTION “At least semi-annually, maintenance shall be conducted in accordance with the manufacturer’s listed installation and maintenance manual.” NFPA 17A 7.3.3 Version 2010 10 CINTAS KITCHEN FIRE PROTECTION Your commercial kitchen continues to evolve as new technology and techniques for cooking are developed. That means your fire protection may need to evolve, too. As standards and regulations change, your Cintas professionals keep you and your employees' safety in mind. Our technicians undergo continuous training on all types of wet and dry pre-engineered suppression systems to ensure they are knowledgeable on manufacturer and NFPA 17A requirements. Additionally, our technicians are kept up-to-date on Underwriters Laboratory (UL) 300 standards for commercial kitchens to ensure your facility will meet required upgrades or improvements. Our Testing Semi-Annually, Our technicians: • Assess the kitchen setup to ensure all hazards are properly covered by the suppression system • After the system has been disarmed, make sure the system activates by both sources: the manual pull station and the heat detectors located in the hood • Verify that, when the system is activated, the gas and/or electric supply is shut off to the equipment protected under the hood • Replace every heat detector link in the detection line • Test piping and nozzles to ensure no blockage is present • Check tanks and agents stored within them for additional testing requirements Consider This • Studies conducted by the National Association of Fire Equipment Distributors found pre-engineered fire suppression systems in commercial kitchens to be 95% reliable and successful in suppressing cooking hazard fires. Of the 5% found not to have extinguished the fire, it was determined improper installation or tampering was the cause. 11 SPRINKLER SYSTEM TESTING & INSPECTION “The facility owner is required to have the automatic sprinkler system component tested annually, semi-annually, quarterly, or monthly, in accordance with NFPA 25. More frequent testing may be required by the local authority having jurisdiction." NFPA 25 Reasons sprinklers fail to operate Manual intervention defeated system 9% 2% Damaged component Lack of maintenance 15% 53% System shut off before fire Inappropriate system for fire 20% Cintas' comprehensive inspection & TESTING Think of your sprinkler system as your lowest cost employee. It is there 24/7, always on duty to help extinguish a fire automatically and report an alarm condition to the fire department. Cintas Fire Service Technicians inspect your systems with meticulous detail and care, keeping you and your facilities' safety in mind at all times. We ensure your system is properly inspected and ready to activate in a fire emergency. Every one of our technicians is dedicated to continuous education in these areas: • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 25 • State and local AHJ fire codes • Factory training and certification • National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies Cintas provides 24-hour emergency service to diagnose and repair any problems you may have with your system. 12 Over 90% of our advanced Fire Service Technicians across the country hold a NICET Level One certification or greater. Our Testing QUARTERLY, Our technicians INSPECT: • Water flow alarm devices • Valve supervisory alarm devices • Supervisory signal devices (except valve supervisory switches) • Hydraulic nameplate • Mechanical devices Annually, Our technicians INSPECT: • Buildings (prior to freezing weather) • Hanger/seismic bracing • Pipe fittings • Sprinklers • Spare sprinklers • Information signage • Antifreeze solution (if applicable) • Water flow alarm devices • Valve supervisory alarm devices • Supervisory signal devices (except valve supervisory switches) • Hydraulic nameplate • Mechanical devices Consider This • Sometime before midnight on October 15, 2004, a fire began on the 34th floor of a 56-story government office building in Caracas, Venezuela. Fortunately, the building was unoccupied at the time, except for a handful of security personnel who evacuated safely. • Despite the fact that a sprinkler system had been installed, the fire did more than $250 million in damage, burning the structure’s contents from the 34th floor to the 50th. Why? Because, as previous inspections revealed, the sprinkler system had not been properly tested or maintained, thus it wasn’t in working condition. The building designers said local fire alarm panels weren’t connected to a building-wide panel and the standpipe system was inoperable at the time of the fire. Properly maintained sprinklers save lives and prevent costly property damage. 13 FIRE ALARM SYSTEM TESTING & INSPECTION Facilities are required to have detection and alarm systems’ components visually inspected and tested monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually as spelled out in accordance with Table 10.3.1 of NFPA 72. “Visual inspections shall be performed in accordance with the schedules in Table 10.3.1 or more often if required by the authority having jurisdiction.” NFPA 72 Cintas Professionals Know Fire Alarms and what it takes to keep them operable At Cintas, our technicians are experienced and trained in the inspection, testing and maintenance of fire alarm systems to ensure code compliance and full functionality. Our training includes: • Factory certifications for specific fire alarm types and manufacturers • Local certifications by state and local authorities • Third party certifications such as CSA International, NAFED and NICET The Cintas dedication to continuous training and education for our fire alarm technicians ensures that inspections of your systems not only meet the standards of NFPA 72, but exceed them. Additionally, our technicians can provide design and installation support due to expansion, tenant improvement or local/national code changes. 14 Over 90% of our advanced Fire Service Technicians across the country hold a NICET Level One certification or greater.
