Congratulations to everyone involved in this year's Stage Challenge - EGGS received first place overall.
Dear parents, caregivers and students
The anticipation and nervous excitement was palpable at the Aotea Centre last Friday
night as the judging began for Stage Challenge. Congratulations to Savannah, Emma and
their team and Nicola Rennie and her team on placing first! EGGS supporters were in the
audience in force and the performance captivated everyone. With Paradisum through to the
Finale of the Big Sing and the Kokako Trio in the Nationals of the Chamber Competition and
the Korean Group receiving a number of awards - details here. It has been an exciting term
for Arts and Culture all around.
The cycling team head off to their North Island Championships this weekend and the points
lead for the Premier Netball team in the Herald this week showed their progress through the
tournament to date as serious contenders. Vineta Teutau, Mauosamoa Gautusa and Madisyn
Ofa-Hindt have been selected for the Auckland U15 Girls rugby team which competed at
the Northern Region 15-a-side tournament this week, and won. Congratulations.
EGGS alumnae are featuring at the Rio Olympics - you can see the details here: Epsom-GirlsGrammar-Sport and it will be good to trace their Olympic journey in August.
This week has been Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori. The UN Education, Scientific and Cultural
Organisation estimates that of the 6000 languages spoken currently in the world, 43%
will have disappeared by the turn of the next century. Te Reo is a New Zealand national
treasure – a taonga. This is its home – Aotearoa New Zealand, a place for it to be nurtured
and treasured – something that this year’s Maori Language Week has at the heart of its
theme. Students have been able to join a number of activities this week and the Kotahitanga
students organised a quiz for staff where the competitive spirit ran high!
As the term comes to its end, students and staff look forward to the holiday break. For
some students there may be some school related holiday tasks but they should also make
sure that they have a good amount of time in the holidays to drop everything and have a
complete break.

Tertiary Info Evening - Tuesday 26 July
Students and families are invited to come along to this evening to speak to representatives from tertiary institutions (universities, polytechnics,
private training providers and the Defence Force). The evening is helpful for finding out more about courses available and especially any
subject requirements these courses may have. This information can then be taken into account when subjects are being chosen for 2017.
Senior Options Evening - Thursday 4 August
Following on from the Tertiary Information Evening, there will be a Senior Options Evening on Thursday 4th August 5.30-7.30pm. There will
be general information in the School Hall 5.30-6.00pm then displays and information in departments from 6.00-7.30pm. We strongly advise
families to attend both evenings ahead of making option selections for 2017 courses. Please note: parking will need to be outside the school
grounds for both evenings. Senior Course Selection Booklets and Career Education Pathways information will available on the school website
www.eggs.school.nz from the first day of Term 3, 25th July. An online Course Selection Form will be available on the Web Portal on Monday
1 August. Students will need to make their Option selections by Monday 15th August. Please put these dates in your calendars.
Gifted and Talented Education
As a part of the Auckland Central Community of Schools initiative a
team of teachers has been established to look at the specific learning
needs of our gifted and talented students. This group aims to develop
strategies that will ensure all students are experiencing “healthy
challenge” in their individual learning. This will look different for
each student depending on their need for extension and support.
In addition to this group the Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator, Cate
Campbell, has been running co-curricular programmes for junior
students.
Tournament of the Minds
EGGS teams will compete in the Tournament of the Minds (TOM)
competition for the first time this year. TOM is an inter-school creative
problem solving event for students. All teams must complete a Long
Term and Spontaneous Challenge. Teams are given six weeks to solve
an open-ended Challenge in the areas of Language Literature, Maths
Engineering, Humanities or Technology. Over 100 junior students
expressed interest in taking part in this competition, 35 Year 9 and 10
students were selected on the basis of the quality of their application
and teacher recommendations. Teams will be competing at the
Regional Competition on Saturday 3rd September.

From the Community EGG
Community Week 20th – 24th June
Student community leaders met in darkness to decorate the main entrance to
EGGS with blue and gold balloons, flowers and lanterns. Welcome messages
were written on the driveway and each student was handed a small note of
affirmation, on arriving at school. The week continued in the spirit of building
community. Activities included egg shaped cookie decorating, a Yoga class, an
international food court, a sausage sizzle and Disco. Thanks to all students who
helped in any way towards this successful week and all teachers who supported
their efforts.
Student Council
Student Council raised money for Sir Ray Avery’s Life Pods on Mufti day in
community week, “Come as Your Childhood Self”. Life Pods are special incubators
designed to function in the most challenging conditions. The students raised
over $2,000 which means that EGGS will be acknowledged on a life pod destined
for Cambodia.

Stage Challenge
It was a massive day down at the Aotea Centre for the Stage Challenge team
last Friday. Their performance based around the idea of Fortitude hit the stage
at 7pm and was a great success – EGGS received first overall as well as awards for
excellence for choreography, concept, and stage use, set and vision enhancement.
We also took out the award for most enthusiastic crowd!! Well done to Arts and
Cultural Leaders Savannah Poynter and Emma Harkness, along with teacher in
charge Nicola Rennie. Congratulations girls!
Drama
Drama Department Theatre
Trips
On 23rd June, Year 12 and 13 Drama
students saw the outstanding musical
“That Bloody Woman” by Luke Di Somma
& Gregory Cooper and directed by Kip
Chapman and performed at the Sky City
Theatre. The show used punk, rock and
pop music to explore the story of Kate
Sheppard’s life. This was an exceptionally
clever performance that highlighted the
huge burden of responsibility and the
sacrifices that were made by women in NZ
campaigning for the vote. On 10th June, Year 10 students viewed a
live performance by Ensemble Impact that
showcased a variety of plays by NZ playwright,
Arthur Meek. They enjoyed the physical and
humorous performance that presented themes
of colonialism, family and the importance of
tradition. This performance was held in one of
our Drama studios. On 30th June, they travelled
to Q Theatre on Queen St to see the Indian Ink
Theatre Company perform “The Elephant Thief”,
written by Justin Lewis and directed by Jacob
Rajan. This was a comedy that used mask, live
music, physical theatre and a huge puppet of
an elephant to tell a story set in the future when
elephants were almost extinct. The themes
were about looking after the environment,
communication and globalisation.
Year 11 Drama students
perform at Highwic House
This term, Year 11 Drama students have
been researching and devising drama
about Highwic House. Students performed
characters from the early 1900s who may
have had an association with the historic
home. From their research, they were able
to create plausible situations and imagine
the lives of those from their community at
another time. been a delight to watch the
students create the world of
these wacky characters.
The style of our performance
is stripped back in the
sense that there is minimal
technology. This puts the
focus on the performance
of the students; I have been
amazed by their talent. They
have brought to life a raucous
horse race, a tango, a song

Wheeler’s Luck
Ms Beckett's Year 12 class hit the stage on June 22nd and 23rd in the
second production of our annual curriculum season with the New
Zealand comedy "Wheelers Luck."
Audiences were thoroughly delighted by the girls' energy, humour
and Ms Beckett's superb direction. Below is Ms Beckett’s director

“I chose Wheeler’s Luck because it is bold, physically challenging and
lots of fun. At its heart is the small town community of Bellend and
