This week has been Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori. Te Reo is a New Zealand national treasure – a taonga. This is its home – Aotearoa New Zealand, a place for it to be nurtured and treasured – something that this year’s Maori Language Week has at the heart of its theme. Students have been able to join a number of activities this week and the Kotahitanga students organised a quiz for staff where the competitive spirit ran high! As the term comes to its end, students and staff look forward to the holiday break. On 30th June, they travelled to Q Theatre on Queen St to see the Indian Ink Theatre Company perform “The Elephant Thief”, written by Justin Lewis and directed by Jacob Rajan. This was a comedy that used mask, live music, physical theatre and a huge puppet of an elephant to tell a story set in the future when elephants were almost extinct. The themes were about looking after the environment, communication and globalisation. Year 11 Drama students perform at Highwic House This term, Year 11 Drama students have been researching and devising drama about Highwic House. From their research, they were able to create plausible situations and imagine the lives of those from their community at another time. been a delight to watch the students create the world of these wacky characters. The style of our performance is stripped back in the sense that there is minimal technology. This puts the focus on the performance of the students; I have been amazed by their talent.
