Issue 2, March 2014 Principal’s Message We have continued to have a busy time at both campuses. As well as teaching the curriculum we have organised the Year 7 Camp, senior music tour to Canberra (the band played in the Great Hall), the Year 11 workshop, the Year 7 BBQ, the Year 10 family orientation evening and BBQ, immunisations at both campuses, a very successful athletics day and Curriculum day for all staff. Self evaluation 2010-2013 and review Our school review was held on Thursday 20 March. We were congratulated by our reviewer Leon Kildea for our extensive self-evaluation process and for the high quality and depth of the analysis. Leon stated that we are in an excellent place and should be very proud of our achievements over the last four year period. All Leading Teachers presented at the review very confidently. Again we were congratulated on the quality of the presentations and the passion, knowledge and vision that came from all Leading Teachers and Principals. We then concentrated on the areas for improvement. Leon and fellow reviewer Emma Richardson helped us consider the next steps for the school. Peer principals Andrew Harnett (Bayside P-12) and Jim Cahill (Williamstown North Primary) also contributed very positively to the CALENDAR March 2014 27 –28 31 Year 9 Cadets Camp Alpine students return April 2014 2 3 4 21 22 25 29 30 — 4 May Year 7-9 P/T/S interviews (Bayview Campus) Year 10-12 P/T/S interviews (Pasco Campus Last day of term 1 Easter Monday —public holiday Term 2 begins ANZAC Day — public holiday Parents & Friends meeting Detachment (School Production) May 2014 6 8 8 — 11 12 — 16 13 — 15 Information Night 6.30pm (Year 7 2015) Elevate Educate Parent Seminar Generations of Jazz Festival (Senior Band) Yr 10 Cadets Sailing Camp NAPLAN Yr 7 & 9 discussion. I would also like to thank all staff and the school community for your contributions to the review process last year. I would also like to congratulate all staff as the very positive review is a consequence of us working so effectively together over the last four years. Curriculum day March 11 2014 All staff both teaching and educational support staff took part in professional development on March 11. The teachers worked further on our Instructional Model. We have previously on Curriculum Days concentrated on the “What” of teaching. That is developing our courses in an agreed format. We have also previously developed an accreditation process for our courses. At this curriculum day we concentrated on the “How” of teaching How to ensure students are stimulated and engaged in their learning. How best to deliver the content. How to get students to learn and be able to do the tasks and learn the skills How to get students to work collaboratively together This was a very successful day with all the strategies discussed in each Learning Area being documented and linked to our Instructional Model. The educational support staff had a guest speaker who helped them develop SMART goals for their Performance and Development Plans. Weeks ahead The term continues with many activities and events. We look forward to the Cadets’ Camp, Bayview working bee 22 March, Avid night for families, planning for the Centenary celebrations, Parent Teacher Student interviews at both Campuses, the return of our alpine students and the school production early term 2. (Make sure you get your tickets!) New School Council 2014 I would like to welcome the new members to the Williamstown High School Council. I am sure they will find membership of this team a really rewarding experience. I would like to thank them in advance for donating their time to WHS. I would like to also thank the members who have put their hand up for another two years-what commitment to WHS! This has not been an easy decision. This is my sixth year at Williamstown High School. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Williamstown especially as I live in the local community. Very few Principals get the chance to be the Principal of their local High School. I am very, very proud of the school and the staff and students achievements. I have decided however, that I need time for my 15 month old granddaughter, my eighty year old parents and four somewhat grown up children. The Principal role is very incredibly rewarding (especially at Williamstown High School) but also extremely demanding. After much thought I have decided this is the right time - for Williamstown High School and for me. The new Principal will start the new Strategic Plan cycle including developing a new Leadership profile to match the new plan. This is what I did five years ago. I will be at Williamstown High for the first six weeks of term 2 and then will take some Long Service Leave and will not return to Williamstown High School. Hopefully a new Principal will be in place for term 3 2014. 2 Bayview Street Campus: 9399 9228 Pasco Street Campus: 9397 1899 Bayview Street Update Williamstown High School Issue 1 - March 2014 One highlight of the last month has been Cultural Diversity Week. This week provides a formal opportunity to celebrate the rich array of cultures and backgrounds that make up the Williamstown High School community. During this week, our bell music featured a variety of musical genres from a range of countries (featuring very prominently the work of Yothu Yindi), home group quizzes were run through the daily bulletin, the canteen ran a special multicultural menu over the week, harmony ribbons were distributed and worn, the library ran a number of competitions, and several lunchtime activities (including boomerang painting) were held. One major event during the week was a presentation to all the year 8s by a group called The Flybz, two young rappers originally from Africa who have just released a song with Paul Kelly. The Flybz gave a talk about their lives as child soldiers and as refugees in the camps, performed a few raps, and then got our students involved with some dancing and rapping. You would know that one of the school values is “diversity in our curriculum, in each other and in our community” and Cultural Diversity Week is just one of the ways in which we respect and celebrate this value. March has also been a big month for sport and extracurricular events. Our inter-school debating program began with all three teams winning their debates. (The year 7 program starts later in the year.) There have been separate days for the year 7 and the year 8 summer sports round robin events (baseball, tennis, cricket and volleyball) and our triathlon and sailing teams have had excellent starts to their seasons. Our school athletics carnival held on Friday 21 March was a huge success -- a healthy, friendly, happy and enjoyable day for our students. You will find more detailed information about most of these events, and a whole lot more, throughout this edition of W-Files. It has been a very busy month in a very full term. You will also find a report on our recent working bee elsewhere in this newsletter. I would like to reiterate my thanks to those who helped on the day (and indeed to all our community members who contribute to the school in so many and varied ways, providing support and impetus to our young people in their learning and their growth.) I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our families a happy and fulfilling term one break. We look forward to seeing all our students back on deck on Tuesday 22 April. Darryn Kruse Campus Principal Work Placements Needed - Can You Help? It is crucial for all VCAL students to complete a work placement with a local employer. This practically reinforces what is being learnt at TAFE and is essential for them to gain their VCAL Certificate. Students require one day per week to observe and help out the employer for minimum payment. The areas that are of most need for 2014 are: Carpentry, Allied Health, and Hair & Beauty. Both the employer and the student are covered by the Education Department’s insurance and public liability, so it is a simple process with just one form to complete. The students and school would very much appreciate any assistance from the community in facilitating these work placements. Please contact the VCAL VET Coordinator Kat Perdriau on 9393 9055 or perdriau.kat.k@edumail.vic.gov.au for further information or if you can assist. 3 Bayview Street Campus: 9399 9228 Pasco Street Campus: 9397 1899 Williamstown High School Issue 2 - March 2014 What a busy and productive term it has been at the Pasco Campus. The Year 10’s have settled in well and have quickly learnt and adapted to the expectations at the senior campus. Our Year 11 students are thriving as they take on full VCE or VCAL programs. The Year 12 students have hit the ground running. Their attitude and work ethic towards their studies has been outstanding. I have visited the VCE Study Centre on numerous occasions this term. The Year 12 students, whether in a supervised session or not, are using this resource in the most productive way possible. Preparing for SAC’s, drafting essays, assisting each other and seeking outside of class teacher help are just some of the activities I have witnessed. Well done to all the students on taking these approaches, staff are certainly impressed with what they have seen. Pasco Street Update During the holidays we will be installing an air conditioner in our recently renovated music room as well as installing some new blinds. The 25 iMacs we have recently installed have certainly been appreciated by the music staff and students. Our students now have the latest devices allowing them to access and utilise the latest music software to support their learning whether in Year 10, VCE or VET music classes. Our library update will also continue, with new lighting and shelving installed and some painting work to also be conducted over the two week holiday period. Next term Assistant Campus Principal Ross Adamson goes on long service leave for a well-earned break and we wish him and his wife all the best for their overseas travels as they cycle 5500km across America from LA to Boston. Adam Potter will step into Ross’s role for the term and Rebecca Ferretti will step into Adam’s Student Engagement and Wellbeing role. We are currently in the process of organising Rebecca’s replacement for her Year 10 Student Management Leader role. Congratulations to one of our 2013 students, Cameron Davies, for receiving a prestigious Victorian Blue School Sports Award. I attended the awards ceremony with his parents and together we proudly watched Cameron being presented with his award. We wish Cameron continued success in his soccer career as he represents Australia at the World Schoolboys Championships and Green Gully Seniors (see pictures below). Please also see below a picture of Bayside Principal Andrew Harnett and myself signing a MoU for a partnership between Mobil Refinery, Transfield Services, Bayside SC and WHS. This partnership will see interested year 10/11 students having the opportunity to participate in the highly valued Students @ Work Program run on site at the refinery as well as extensive opportunities for our senior chemistry students to deepen their learning in a real life environment. Local media, CEO’s and Hobsons Bay Mayor Sandra Wilson were in attendance and very supportive of the partnership created that will greatly benefit our students. May I wish all our families a happy and safe holiday period, as well as encouraging senior students to see the term 1 holiday period as an opportunity to take a break and refresh, consolidate material covered and prepare for an equally successful term 2. Gino Catalano Pasco Campus Principal 4 Bayview Street Campus: 9399 9228 Pasco Street Campus: 9397 1899 Williamstown High School Issue 1 - March 2014 School Council report for W-Files Search for our new college principal begins now School Council was saddened to learn that college principal Lisa Sperling would be resigning from her position at the end of next term. It’s a pity Lisa will not be here when the school launches its centenary celebrations later in the year but we understand her need to put family first. Because Lisa has provided us with so much notice, School Council can begin the search for a replacement immediately. Our school community has a direct involvement in appointing the principal with representatives of Council sitting on the selection panel. This is one of the great advantages of the government education system. The selection process is thorough and time-consuming but Council will keep the community informed along the way. It is our intention that a new college principal will be ready to take up the position at the beginning of Term 3. Council will also ensure that the community gets the opportunity to formally farewell and thank Lisa for her contribution over the past five years. She has been an inspiring leader and her legacy will carry the school well into the future. This year School Council has 15 members, including six serving their first term. I was privileged to be returned as president, while parents Mary Vlahos and Mario Azzopardi were returned as vice-president and treasurer respectively. For the first time in many years we have co-opted three key community members to complement the elected members. Profiles of all Council members will be on the school website. Even before Lisa resigned, 2014 was shaping as a watershed year in the school’s history. Our principals and leading teachers completed our annual triennial review this term (postponed from 2013), presenting their findings at an all-day forum with our school reviewer Leon Kildea. This exhaustive analysis of the school’s data identified a number of areas for improvement and the steps needed to achieve this. As School Council president, I attended the all-day forum and was greatly impressed with the willingness of our senior staff to tackle the shortcomings identified. At the end of the day Mr Kildea told me how impressed he was with Williamstown High, noting that he would happily send his own children here. On behalf of the whole school community, I congratulate those on the staff who contributed to this important task and thank them for their hard work. Next term parent volunteers will be sought for a number of major events being planned to celebrate our centenary. The school’s centenary working party has developed a program that will be manageable but also suitable to celebrate this milestone. The first major event will be the official launch in October, and the last will be the centenary ball 12 months later. It will be a grand year with opportunities for past, present and future students and their families to be involved. Please keep an eye out for further information about our centenary events in coming weeks. Hugh Jones School Council president 5 Bayview Street Campus: 9399 9228 Pasco Street Campus: 9397 1899 Williamstown High School Issue 1 - March 2014 Bayview Campus Working Bee The Bayview Campus working bee was held on Saturday 22 March. A lot was done on this day to improve the grounds and amenities at the school, including: weeding and mulching the “dry creek bed” at the front of the school; tidying, weeding and mulching the gardens around the main car park; weeding, turning over and replanting the horticulture area beds; planting rosemary and bulbs in the raised beds in front of the portables; repainting the large atrium chess set pieces; removing non-grafted passionfruit vines, overgrown grasses and branches in the horticulture area; cutting back trees from gutters and walls; thinning vegetation in the wetlands; installing mesh guard at the bottom of the portables. We would like to thank the following students, parents, siblings and staff members for their help on the day: Mario Azzopardi, Mark Frisby, Tom Frisby, Nick Frisby, James Frisby, Liam Michelsen, David Michelsen, Liam Gardner, Indre Kisonas, Jayden Smith, Paul Smith, Ralph Simpson, Dina Simpson, Michael Jackson, Kathryn Ball, Matthew Jackson, Chris Jackson, Jen Thompson, Penny Milhe, Cheryl Barnett, Dom Polanco, Julius Polanco, Mark Gailitis, Liz Brewer, Zach Leatham, Meredith Henkel, Michael Duffy, Adam Stewart, Noel Landry, Heidi Landry, James Landry, Kate Landry, Ned Landry, Tess Landry, Tiarah Minns, Joshua Minns, Megan Michelsen, Chris Morrow, Cindy Dalton, Sally Hayes, Doug Leckie, Tony Lopreiato, Jose Lu. Senior Constable Scott Sutton Youth resource officer, Leading Senior Constable Scott Sutton, from Altona North Police Station, has become a regular visitor to the Year 12 Senior VCAL class. He talked to the students about Police Powers vs Citizens’ Rights and educated the students about PSOs, safe driving, and crimes associated with online activity. At the end of the session Braedan Smolski-Keig and Chloe Rosenboom did a role-play and tried to question and arrest our visiting police officer. We would like to thank Leading Senior Constable Sutton for his time and look forward to more visits in the future. Kat Perdriau VCAL Coordinator 6 Bayview Street Campus: 9399 9228 Pasco Street Campus: 9397 1899 Williamstown High School Issue 2 - March 2014 The Environment Initiatives Team This year each class has a representative that is part of the Environmental Crusaders. This group will be looking at Recycling and Biodiversity in our endeavor to become a 5 star Resource Smart School for Sustainability. I congratulate those students who have taken on becoming Environmental Crusaders. We have involved ourselves in Clean Up Australia both in the community at the Marine Jawbone and also at the school level. Some members came to clean up the Jawbone and also were able to snorkel for Pacific Sea stars. No seastars were found which means the Jawbone is a very healthy environment. On March 4 Bayview St Campus had a whole school clean up at the end of the day. I would like to thank the administration, staff and students for their commitment to make a cleaner school grounds. Another activity the Crusaders have organized was the Ride to School Day on Wednesday 19 March. Over three hundred students rode or walked to school on this day. 7MM, 8LY and 9BN had the most students and won prizes for gaining this interest. I would like to thank Griffin Clements, Josh Clements and Thai Than our ambassador for their work in both activities. The Senior Campus under the guidance of Ross Adamson has completed an energy audit and are replacing lights that are energy users. The campus is working towards a sustainable campus with the help of Mr. Lu our maintenance manager. We have had a wonderful term across both campuses building a stronger understanding of what SWPBS looks and feels like with many students and teachers participating in a wide range of explicit teaching and wellbeing activities based around our behaviour matrix. At the Pasco Campus students and homegroup teachers have definitely made the most of their opportunities during homegroup sessions to part take and engage in team building, communication and lateral thinking activities. It was a sight to see two hundred year 12 students on the basketball courts laughing, full of energy and working together to achieve a common goal with their homegroup teachers in the mix. Where at the Bayview Campus homegroups have been on the film making trail, designing, directing and editing master task movies, which will be available for all to see on our website later in term two. Early in year, we put a call out to the families of our school community to raise awareness of and promote new opportunities for our “Success Pass” initiative. Families were encouraged to either suggest or donate where possible; ideas for rewards and recognition for our success pass winners. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of many of our families in the school community. It is important to acknowledge and thank everyone for these contributions. Without a doubt, the single most popular choice of award from the student body is the iTunes Voucher, with the Sun Theatre voucher running a close second. We have lots of ideas, energy and activities in the pipeline for SWPBS during term two and beyond. Some of which include a new success pass post box designed and decorated by Bayview students. We will have to roll out the red carpet for the premier of “The Master Task” movie starring all students from the Bayview Campus and most importantly we will continue to create and maintain a positive, safe learning environment that enhances our school culture where we maximise individual academic and social growth. We will continue to do this, working closely with families of the Williamstown High School Community. 8 Email: williamstown.hs@edumail.vic.gov.au Web Site: www.willihigh.vic.edu.au Williamstown High School Issue 2 - March 2014 P&F had a great turn out for our first meeting in Feb to hear college Principal Lisa Sperling present to the group on a range of topics This included a broad overview of the schools recent achievements, planned upgrades and curriculum changes. We had a number of students represent the state at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships held in Sydney during mid-March. Nathan Pearce raced in the final of the U/20 1500m finishing 10th. Jeremy Kirkham raced in the U/17 800m finished 5th and the 1500m also finishing 5th. Conor Lynch raced in the U/18 2000m steeple chase and finished 14th overall. Williamstown High School was also represented by some relay runners along with former student: Jack Rayner finished 3rd in the U/20 5000m just outside the qualifying time for the World Junior Athletics Championships. All of these students have continually represented the school at athletic carnivals and to achieve the results they have at a national level is an amazing effort. On Friday March 21 we held our school carnival at the Newport Athletics Track with many students performing well. Kane Densley 8LO and Natasha Inia 8KW winning multiple events at their year level. Both Peter Bourke and Andy Boudrie have started on building a base level of fitness for the students to progress on throughout the year. The aim is for this to be a solid base for the students to work towards hitting their peak around September when the interschool competitions start. Our students will again compete in a range of athletics events throughout the year. Good luck goes out to ex-student Morgan Mitchell (year 12 class of 2012) who in attempting to qualify for the Australian Athletics Team competing at the Commonwealth Games later this year. Morgan needs to run at least a B qualifying time in the next to grab an individual spot for the women’s 400m event and a spot in the women’s 4 X 400m relay team. Netball Our netball program has had a successful start to the year. The continuation of combining the year 8 and 9 program has been a highlight. It has become a very competitive and hard working environment where the students are continually challenged. Marg Lind has outlined the year for the girls working on developing all the different aspects of the game, the pathway is very important area that has been highlighted to the students. It is important all students are aware of the pathway and where they should be training and playing outside of school. For those students interested the State School Netball Team is holding trials for the 12 and under and 15 and under teams. To register your interest you need to click on the following link: https://www.ssv.vic.edu.au/TeamVic/Pages/default.aspx#netball and complete the application form. Registration closes April 23rd 2014. Triathlon This year the triathlon program has got off to a flying start with 15 new students entering the program. Our coaches Mat Tippett and Jamie Edwards are very excited about the potential that is being displayed amongst the group at our weekly alternating dry and wet training session. With our focus this year being on getting students involved in competitions, it was fantastic to have a group of students competing in the recent WSTC Labour Day Enduro event. For some students this was their first attempt at competing in a short course triathlon, of other students this event was a way of measuring their summer training. As special mention needs to go to the results achieved by 2 of our year 7 students Oscar Dart and Hamish Munro who finished 1st and 5th overall in the short course event. Students will be competing in 2 more races before the end of the triathlon season finishes mid April. Our webpage http://www.willihigh.vic.edu.au/?page_id=6228 has had a recent update to include our current training schedule and upcoming competition details. Any interested parents/students please have a look over the information posted on this page or contact me directly at gaylard.lauren.l@edumail.vic.gov.au 10 Bayview Street Campus: 9399 9228 Pasco Street Campus: 9397 1899 Williamstown High School Issue 2 - March 2014 Cricket The cricket program welcomes new comers Luke Whatman, Matt Turcinovich, Aaron Wedding, Ryan Caiger, Jagger Skilbeck, Charlie Carter, Liam Dawson and Gus Picking. It has been a fairly interrupted term however the enthusiasm has been second to none and have really enjoyed seeing a few of the older boys take on leadership roles. Again, the improvement in all of the boys has been very pleasing in all facets of the game. We have a game organised against Maribyrnong College that will take place late term 1. This will be a welcomed test and I know the boys will be up for the challenge. I am extremely pleased to announce that there will be a scholarship for a year 9 cricketer this year. It is called the ‘Footscray Edgewater CC scholarship’. What this entails is the accelerated cricket fees paid for by Footscray Edgewater CC, training apparel, the opportunity to train with the senior squad throughout pre-season and the opportunity to train every Tuesday night during the ‘in season’. This is a fantastic opportunity for the winner and will be exposed to training at the best Cricket Club in the Western Suburbs (Victoria premier cricket competition) with some of the best coaching staff which includes Mervyn Hughes and some of the best players in the state including John Hastings. The aim is for the scholarship to become an annual award. Year 7s, 8s and intermediate cricket teams all comfortably won the first stages of the school competition. Some very good performances in particular by Aaron Wedding and Ryan Caiger who have very quickly taken on board advice and been able to execute this in match conditions. Basketball The basketball program has started strongly. With an increase in numbers at year 7 and in the senior program we’ve had to make some adjustments and our thanks go to the parents for helping. At year 7 and 8 the boys and girls have been working on developing their fundamentals and court awareness. Darren Hindle is also developing offensive structures with the athletes to enable easier scoring opportunities for the team. For those students interested the State School Basketball Team is holding trials for the 12 and under (students born in 2002). To register your interest you need to click on the following link: https://www.ssv.vic.edu.au/TeamVic/Pages/Basketball.aspx and complete the application form. Registration closes May 19th 2014. Our Year 9-10-11 basketball program has again grown this year. We have 27 students involved in the program. Due to the large amount of numbers we have had to split the sessions. Our boys and girls now train separately. Training is on Thursday with the two groups alternating with a 7:15am before school session and a period 4 and lunchtime session. This has been a successful change in the program and it has allowed the training to focus on team structures and strategies as part of the training in preparation for upcoming tournaments in term 2. Teams have been entered at all year levels for the Victorian College championships that will be coming up in term two. This is one of the major tournaments we are entering for the year. Other program news: We are looking at an open night for parents during term 2. This night will involve students and their parents in the program attending the session and hearing from our coaches about the pathway in their chosen sport. We will also have a brand new uniform as an option for students on the night as well as the future direction for the program. Best regards, Martin Walsh and Adam Potter Accelerated sport coordinators. 11 Bayview Street Campus: 9399 9228 Pasco Street Campus: 9397 1899 Williamstown High School Issue 2 - March 2014 Victorian Life Saving championships held on the long weekend. The students have been working hard on a Community Learning Project, which they will implement when they return to school in Term 2. They have learnt to be much more independent – having to wash their own clothes, cook some of their own meals and being away from family and friends for 9 weeks. Students have built strong friendships with other students from country and city schools. The schools on campus this term include: Footscray City College Horsham SC Hoppers Crossing SC Ballarat SC Wendouree Williamstown HS Phoenix P12 College Keilor Downs College Goroke P12 College They have braved the outdoors on 3-day expeditions, walking and bike-riding with heavy packs for many km’s, presenting to primary school students in the area and running workshops and events for each other at the campus. We look forward to visiting the students and seeing all the schools present their Community Learning Project to all the teachers on Friday 28 March. You can follow them on Facebook as well as on Twitter at Gnurad Gundidj. 13 Bayview Street Campus: 9399 9228 Pasco Street Campus: 9397 1899 Williamstown High School Issue 2 - March 2014 Harmony Week March 17-21 marked Cultural Diversity Week. Students and staff at Williamstown High School embraced this week by organising events and activities for all to participate in. These included a shared lunch, trivia on different cultures, activities in the library about where we come from, boomerang painting and a visit from African refugee rappers the FLYBZ. Athletics day also had a unity and cultural diversity theme with the student leaders painting the school emblem into the Olympic rings to represent all the continents we come from. FLYBZ On Thursday 20 March, the Year 8 students of Williamstown High school attended an informative and entertaining presentation by the African-Australian rap duo FLYBZ (pronounced Fly-beez) The duo consists of Fablice and G-Storm Manirakiza. They are based in Melbourne where they have toured and performed to many schools spreading awareness of the conditions in Africa through music and stories. There have recently collaborated with pop legend Paul Kelly to produce their new single ‘Child Soldier’. They told the students of their struggle with the living conditions in their home country Africa. The two boys connected after Fablice escaped his life in Burundi as a child soldier at the age of eleven, where they then met at a refugee camp. The boys continued to migrate to different refugee camps where they began experimenting with music in a worn torn environment where they witnessed first-hand cannibalism, murder and rape. Despite the devastating circumstances, the boy’s talent for music blossomed and FLYBZ was born. The duo performed to the students with the students interacting and participating by dancing and singing along with the duo. This runs every Thursday Lunchtime. We started by doing drawing exercises, but students are now working on their own art projects. Our number has now increased to about 18 students who have been coming along to do their artwork each Thursday lunchtime. This is a great opportunity for those students who love art, drawing or want to improve or learn new or different drawing techniques. I would really like to thank Mr. Minter for his enthusiasm in supporting this new initiative. Congratulations A huge congratulation to Michael Gibbon of Year 12 for being accepted and exhibited in Top Designs. This is a huge honor as there are hundreds of students who apply for this opportunity each year. Although Michael is currently in Year 12 he completed Year 12 Visual Communication and Design in 2013. His teacher Shelly Casey should also be congratulated for teaching and guiding Michael to this fantastic achievement. There was a group of us who went along to the opening of the Top Design exhibition on Friday night. This exhibition will be on at the Melbourne Museum until 13th July. It showcases work from many different school in the areas of furniture making, fashion, film, photography, food, websites, mechanical and electronic projects. It is well worth a visit and especially to see Michael work in VCD. The four action-packed days included climbing to the top of Australia’s highest mountain, six performances, exploring our capital city and making lifelong friends. This camp was the most remarkable experience I’d ever had. The outstanding views from the chairlift to the top of Mount Kosciusko ‘set the stage’ for ‘scaling’ the heights (and also a deep conversation about the physics of snow!) Then the musical journey started. From the first performance at Berridale Primary School (NSW) to our last at Garema Place (ACT) each performance was better than the last. Our major performance was in the Great Hall at Parliament House. Each band played their full repertoire and an astonishing performance of Divertimento from the clarinet and flute ensem- 0514: Senior Concert Band performing at Cooma North Primary School, Cooma. ble left everyone breathless. It was a privilege to play in such a significant public building. The next day’s performance was just a stone throws away from our accommodation: Garema Place. The Canberrians enjoyed our song selections, and the vibe was ‘upbeat’ the audience was unmistakeably impressed. In the days after the tour, each band member found themselves subconsciously humming or simply singing each song in their head, after having them etched into their brains with the smooth wave of each conductor’s baton. It was hard to accept that the tour was over. The days flowed into one another, each performance becoming more confident than the last. Many thanks to Mr Koren, Ms Brogan, Mr Giles, Ms Cabena, Mr Harry and Mr Will Salisbury, for without them the tour wouldn’t have been possible. Student accident insurance policies are available from some commercial insurers. These cover a range of medical expenses not covered by Medicare or private health insurance. Actions Required Parents/guardians are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs; 25 and reasonably low cost accident insurance policies are available from commercial insurers.
