Research Projects
PhD Research - Issues Related to Paramedic Professionals Transitioning into
Academia
This study will identify key issues that paramedic professionals face when attempting to transition from
clinical practice to work in universities. The participants will be recruited and the data will be gathered
using a mixed-methods approach utilising a quantitative survey and the thematic analysis of interviews.
Supervisors - Motivations and Related Teaching Activities (SMARTA) - In
Collaboration with Beyond Medical Education
This research will evaluate why a General Practitioner chooses to become and continue to be a GP
supervisor and whether their differing motives result in different teaching activities. The resulting
information will be a valuable resource that will be used in recruitment, training and support of GP
supervisors of registrars, PGPPP doctors, medical students and learners from other disciplines.
The project will also investigate a different supervision and teaching model that splits the clinical
supervision activities that are centred on ensuring the patient is safe from the educational supervision
activities that are centred on ensuring the registrar is learning. As increasing pressures impact upon the
viability of the traditional apprenticeship model of GP education this innovation may have a significant
contribution to the sustainability of general practice training.
This project is in line with the following overarching priorities from GPET’s Strategic Plan:
 Evaluating and improving the effectiveness of general practice training
 Understanding and overcoming barriers to the effectiveness and sustainability of general
practice training
 Building sustainable supervisory and educational capacity while fostering individual
professional enrichment
And with Key Result Areas:
 Improve and expand training capacity and resources
Can eye-tracking technology improve situational awareness and student
feedback during simulation? – In Collaboration with Monash University and the
University of Queensland.
This study will use eye tracking technology to investigate pre-professional students’ gaze and
situational awareness. This technology identifies individuals’ area of interest, gaze fixation/duration,
and scan path and enables analysis of where individuals are looking when decisions are made.
