ATTENDANCE POLICY Students at Language Center International are expected to attend all their classes. Regular attendance is important for achievement and progress. Students who are often absent miss learning opportunities and active practice of English skills. They have more difficulty completing their assignments, being prepared for classes, understanding the materials taught, and improving their overall proficiency which is needed for advancement to a higher level of study. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Students are expected to attend all classes regularly. Students are expected to register only for classes which they can attend regularly. Students are expected to be on time. Students cannot expect the school to excuse their absences. Instructors and school administrators CANNOT GIVE PERMISSION for a student to be absent. Students who miss 20% of any class during a term receive a probation warning letter. Non F-1 students who miss 20% of total enrollment hours are placed on attendance probation. Non F-1 students who miss 80% of total enrollment hours in any term are immediately dismissed. F-1 students who miss 20% of enrollment hours required for SEVP compliance are placed on attendance probation. F-1 students who miss 80% of enrollment hours required for SEVP compliance in any term are immediately dismissed. PROBATION Students who miss 20% of any class will receive a probation warning letter and may be asked to meet with the School Registrar to discuss their attendance. A probation warning letter informs students that they should improve their attendance during the next term of registration to avoid attendance probation status and possible unsatisfactory academic progress. Students who miss 20% of their total (or in the case of F-1 students SEVP required) registered hours for a term will be placed on attendance probation status and will be asked to meet with the Registrar. Students have the following term to improve their attendance. Students who miss 80% or more of their total (or in the case of F-1 students SEVP required) registered hours during any term will be immediately dismissed from the school and are not allowed to enroll at LCI for one term. Dismissal will result in the termination of an F-1 student’s visa status. First-term F-1 students transferring out to another school who are in probation status at the end of their first term will be transferred in terminated status. F-1 students who have completed more than one term at LCI must not be on probation status at the time of transfer in order to transfer in good standing. SUSPENSION/DISMISSAL: Students who are placed on probation status for a total of three terms within a twelve-month period will be suspended and dismissed from the school. Students dismissed from the school may not return for one term. 1|Page Revised 2004, 2010, March 2013, June 2013, January 2015 Dismissal of an F-1 student will result in the termination of the student’s F-1 visa status. Attendance sheets are submitted to the Registrar each week and the information is recorded in each student’s record. Every student’s attendance is tracked for each class and for total registered hours. Absences are recorded in 15-minute periods. ATTENDANCE TRACKING GUIDELINES Recorded as Absent .25 .50 .75 1 1.25 1.50 1.75 2 2.25 2.5 Time Absent 1-15 minutes 16-30 minutes 30-45 minutes 46-60 minutes 61-75 minutes 76-90 minutes 91-105 minutes 106-120 minutes 121-135 minutes 136-150 minutes Students who sleep in class or who use personal computers, electronic devices, or telephones for activities unrelated to the class being taught will be marked absent according to the attendance tracking guidelines. Students may request a record of their attendance from the Registrar at any time. If a student does not agree with his/her attendance record, the student should request verification with the course instructor(s). An attendance history is recorded for the entire length of study for each student. Undocumented absences are not excused. Documented, written evidence for absences due to medical or exceptional emergency circumstances necessitating a leave of absence should be provided to the Registrar for review and inclusion in the student’s file in order to avoid probation and/or dismissal for attendance violations. In accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations (8 C.F.R. § 214.2(f)(6)(iii)(B) ), F-1 students may be placed on a reduced course load during a term with proper medical substantiation. “In order to authorize a reduced course load based upon a medical condition, the student must provide medical documentation from a licensed medical doctor, doctor of osteopathy, or licensed clinical psychologist.” Such absences will be recorded but excluded from the calculation of the total percentages. The above exclusion for proper medical documentation shall extend to all other LCI students regardless of their visa category. 3|Page Revised 2004, 2010, March 2013, June 2013, January 2015 ARRIVING LATE (TARDINESS) AND LEAVING EARLY (EARLY DEPARTURE) Students are expected to be in class on time and to remain in class until the class ends. Dismissal/Dismissed: A student is not allowed to continue his/her studies. The student cannot enroll for one term. Dismissal will result in the termination of an F-1 student’s visa status. Students who miss 80% of registered class hours in any term as defined by their attendance requirements or who are on probation status for three terms within a twelve-month period are subject to dismissal. Termination of status: An F-1 student loses his/her legal status in the United States due to a violation of US immigration regulations.
