Introduction
Welcome to the Petroleum Institute’s Record of Scholarly Publications for
2013. The Petroleum Institute (PI) is a teaching and research university,
dedicated to excellence in engineering and applied sciences related to
the oil and energy industries. The PI is internationally recognized for the
quality of its research and technology development.
This is a guide to all scholarly publications produced in 2013 by the PI’s
faculty, staff and graduate students in the College of Engineering, the Arts
and Sciences Program, the Advanced University Placement Department
and the Graduate Program. It presents the citation details for peerreviewed articles in prominent journals, as well as patents, books, book
chapters, edited collections and conference proceedings.
The record reflects the outstanding quality and diversity of research at
the PI. Amongst the highlights of this year’s achievements are the books authored by two of our distinguished faculty,
Dr. Jorge Gomes and Dr. Cornelis Peters. The breadth of research interests is demonstrated by the presence of
articles on such diverse topics as wind-farm output, the preservation of sabkha and gas turbine efficiency. It should
not be overlooked that much excellent research has been undertaken in non-scientific fields, such as communications
and engineering education.
This record offers our sponsors, the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, as well as interested
outside observers, an insight into research activity at the PI. I hope that it will serve the purpose of indicating to
potential collaborators the kinds of opportunities which exist for them to join us in initiating new projects.
I congratulate the whole PI community for a year of successful and impressive research and publication. We can be
justly proud of the academic achievements which you will find in the pages which follow.
