Introduction
1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. SYSTEM OVERVIEW
The TMS 9000 is a flexible system for simultaneously monitoring the level of O2, CO2, CO, NOx, SOx or any
combination thereof, present in a single gas stream. Its completely modular design allows users with varying
gas measurement needs to construct a monitoring system that matches the specific parameters of their
application.
Each TMS 9000 is comprised of:
1. A shelve system for mounting the various subsystem modules. This shelve system includes an AC
power supply as well as a combination power distribution and RS-485 data buss.
2. Up to four different gas measurement modules (for a complete list of available gas measurement see
Chapter 5).
3.
A Terminus, which manages all internal, external and remote communications.
4. An optional display/keyboard interface module that allows direct interaction with the system.

GAS MEASUREMENT MODULES
Each measurement module includes a suite of analog sensors that detect the level of the specific target gas in
the sample stream. Other internal sensors detect data needed to calculate the gas concentration (e.g. sample
gas temperature, gas flow rate, etc.). Onboard circuitry converts the analog output from the sensors into digital
data, calculates the gas concentration and controls any pneumatic valves needed to manipulate the gas stream.
Slopes and offsets are calculated and stored locally in each module.
The slope and offset from the last calibration of the modules are stored in non-volatile memory. All other data
generated by the module is kept in temporary memory registers on the module. The module has no other longterm data storage or analysis capabilities so only the most recent concentration readings are available from each
module.
The modules are able to run at power-up without intervention of the Terminus. Internal dependencies between
module processes are handled locally by the module’s own controller. To are simplify debugging, key process
variables and status indicators are usually viewable via the display/keyboard interface module parameters or the
system’s I/O port
TERMINUS
The Terminus controls all internal and external communications. Internal data communications between the gas
measurement modules and the Terminus are conducted via and RS-485 using the Modbus® request/reply
messaging protocol. External communications are handled via an I/O port that is available as either Ethernet or
RS-232.
The Terminus is able to read enough configuration information from the modules that it can work at a minimal
level with any type of module that is added to the system, even types that were created after the revision of the
firmware currently being run by the Terminus was written.
DISPLAY/KEYBOARD INTERFACE MODULE
An optional display/keyboard interface module consists of a vacuum florescent display with two lines of 40 text
characters and a 9-button keypad. Together they function as a context sensitive interface, which allows the user
to navigate through various operations and procedures in a step-by-step manner. At each step, the TMS 9000
system firmware causes labels to appear on the bottom row of the display directly above each key, defining the
function of that key. Pressing a key causes the TMS 9000 system firmware to perform the related instruction.
The display/keyboard interface module communicates with the Terminus via an I2C buss.
INTERFACE METHODS
Interaction with the TMS 9000 system can be of several types:
• The TMS 9000 system can report data directly to an external datalogger using Modbus® protocol.
When queried by an external source (e.g. a datalogger or terminal emulation program), the Terminus in
turn queries the appropriate data register(s) of the specified module(s) then outputs this data in the form
of an ASCII data stream. The contents of all of the gas measurement module data registers are
available to be included in the data stream.
Contents of gas measurement modules data registers are also available for viewing via the optional
display/keyboard interface module.
• The TMS 9000 system can respond to commands that allow the user to:
• Initiate or check the calibration of a module;
• Perform certain setup and system configuration operations, or;

Users initiate operations, instructions or functions is by pressing one of the keys on the display/keyboard
interface module. The Terminus firmware reads the key closure and executes the appropriate

command. If the action requested involves one of the system’s modules, the Terminus uses the
system’s internal RS-485/Modbus® interface to set the value of data register associated with the desired
action. The module firmware reads the changed state of that register and executes the related
command.
Both of the above types of interaction with the system are available from remote locations as well. By using
either a terminal emulation program or Teledyne Instruments’ APICOM interface software commands can be
activated and data can be requested. Because the TMS 9000 system has only one externally available I/O port
it cannot be connected to both a datalogger and a terminal interface at the same time unless the terminal link is
made via a datalogger with pass through capability.
POWER SUPPLY AND DISTRIBUTION EITHER
AC line power is supplied to each of the modules from the main power supply located on the systems backplane.
Each module converts this line power into the various DC power levels and other AC power levels needed to
operate the module.
PNEUMATIC OPERATION
The TMS 9000 system pneumatics are fairly simple. Gas flow is provided by an external pump that is pneumatically connected to the exhaust ports of the TMS 9000 system’s gas measurement modules and is created by
keeping the sample gas inlets of each gas measurement modules near ambient pressure. While many of the
available gas measurement modules are able to share single pump, some modules, such as the 9200 series
require a separate pump for each module.

2.2. WARRANTY
Warranty Policy (02024C)
Prior to shipment, Teledyne Instruments equipment is thoroughly inspected and tested. Should equipment
failure occur, Teledyne Instruments assures its customers that prompt service and support will be available.
COVERAGE
After the warranty period and throughout the equipment lifetime, Teledyne Instruments stands ready to provide
on-site or in-plant service at reasonable rates similar to those of other manufacturers in the industry. All
maintenance and the first level of field troubleshooting is to be performed by the customer.
NON-API MANUFACTURED EQUIPMENT
Equipment provided but not manufactured by Teledyne Instruments is warranted and will be repaired to the
extent and according to the current terms and conditions of the respective equipment manufacturers' warranty.
GENERAL
Teledyne Instruments warrants each product manufactured by Teledyne Instruments to be free from defects in
material and workmanship under normal use and service for a period of one year from the date of delivery. All
replacement parts and repairs are warranted for 90 days after the purchase.
If a product fails to conform to its specifications within the warranty period, Teledyne Instruments shall correct
such defect by, in Teledyne Instruments’ discretion, repairing or replacing such defective product or refunding

3. GETTING STARTED
3.1. UNPACKING
CAUTION
THE VARIOUS COMPONENTS AND MODULES OF THE TMS 9000 SYSTEM ARE
HEAVY.
TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY, WE RECOMMEND USING TWO PERSONS TO LIFT
AND CARRY THE SYSTEM’S VARIOUS COMPONENTS AND MODULES.
5. Inspect the received packages for external shipping damage. If damaged, please advise the shipper
first, then Teledyne Instruments.
6. Some of the gas measurement modules accompanying your TMS 9000 system are accompanied by a
printed record of the final performance characterization performed at the factory. These records, titled
Final Test and Validation Data Sheets are an important quality assurance and calibration record. They
should be placed in the quality records file for this system.
7. Inspect the interior of the various modules and components to make sure all circuit boards and other
components are in good shape and properly seated.
8. Check all connectors of the various internal wiring harnesses and pneumatic hoses to make sure they
are firmly and properly seated.
NOTE
Printed circuit assemblies (PCAs) are sensitive to electro-static discharges too small to
be felt by the human nervous system. Failure to use ESD protection when working with
electronic assemblies will void the TMS 9000 system warranty.
See Chapter 12 for more information on preventing ESD damage.

3.3.2.1. Connecting the TMS 9000 System to a RS-232 Link
If your TMS 9000 system is configured for RS-232 communications, it will support two communicate modes.
• COMPUTER MODE: Used when the system is connected to a computer with a dedicated interface
program such as Teledyne Instruments’ APICOM. More information regarding APICOM can be found in
Section 7.6.
• INTERACTIVE MODE: Used with a terminal emulation programs such as HyperTerminal or a “dumb”
computer terminal. See Section 7.3 for a list of commands used in this mode.
Maximum communication speed is limited by the RS-232 port to 115.2 kBaud. See section 6.6.2.3 for
information on checking and setting the port’s baud rate.
To connect the TMS 9000 system to an RS-232 link:

2. Attach a standard, shielded, RS-232 compatible cable terminated with a straight-through DB-9F
connector to the serial I/O connector located on the Terminus.
CAUTION
Cables that appear to be compatible because of matching connectors may incorporate
internal wiring that make the link inoperable. Check cables acquired from sources other
than Teledyne Instruments for pin assignments before using.

3.3.2.2. Connecting to a LAN or the Internet
If your TMS 9000 system is configured for Ethernet, it can be connected to any local area network (LAN) running
TCP/IP using routers capable of operating at 10BaseT. The interface operates as a standard TCP/IP device on
port 3000. The firmware on board the Ethernet card automatically sets the communication modes and baud rate
(115 200 kBaud).
If Internet access is available through the LAN, this option also allows communication with the system over the
public Internet.

2. Attach a CAT5, Ethernet compatible cable with a Male RJ-45 connector into the appropriate place on the
Terminus casing (see Figure 3-4).
NOTE:
The TMS 9000 firmware supports dynamic IP addressing or DHCP.
If your network also supports DHCP, the system will automatically configure its LAN
connection appropriately,
If your network does not support DHCP, see Section 6.6.4.3 for instructions on manually
configuring the LAN connection.
3.3.3. Installing Gas Measurement Modules
Your TMS 9000 system may or may not arrive with the gas measurement modules already installed. If not this
section defines the proper manner for installing them.
NOTE
Because, some details may differ depending on module type, make sure to check the
operator’s manual for each.
Each module bay includes:
• Two shelf braces.
• An electrical connector for the power/RS-485 buss, and
• A pair of gas inlet/ exhaust outlet fixtures.

3.3.3.1. Module Electronic and Pneumatic Connections
Each gas measurement module is built on a metal base that is designed to slide into the guides formed along
the bottom of the shelf braces for each module bay.
1. Make sure the TMS 9000 system is turned off.
2. Start with the module to be installed in the bottom shelf bay and work upward.
3. Carefully lift the module so that the leading edge of the base nearest the module’s power supply and
controller card is inserted into the shelf guides (See Figure 3-11).
4. Slide the module into the shelf bay.
CAUTION
THE GAS MEASUREMENT MODULES CAN BE VERY HEAVY.
TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY, WE RECOMMEND TWO PERSONS LIFT AND CARRY
THE MODULE.
MAKE SURE TO SLIDE THE MODULE INTO THE BAY COMPLETELY.
5. Connect the modules power/RS-485 connector to the systems buss connector (See Figure 3-11).
• This connector is keyed so that it cannot be inserted incorrectly
6. Connect the module’s gas inlet line to the inner fixture of the bays gas inlet (See Figure 3-11). While it is
not always true, typically the module’s inlet line will be of smaller diameter. Consult the operator’s
manual for the module to be sure.
7. Connect the module’s exhaust line to the inner fixture of the bays exhaust outlet (See Figure 3-11).
Typically, the module’s inlet line will be of larger diameter. Consult the operator’s manual for the module
to be sure.
8. Use a wrench to make sure that hex nuts of the fixtures are tight.

3.3.4. SELECTING PUMPS FOR THE TMS 9000 SYSTEM
The gas flow for the TMS 9000 system is created by one or more external pumps. By keeping the sample gas
inlets of the system’s various gas measurement modules near ambient pressure, usually by means of a small
vent installed in the sample line at the inlet, a vacuum is created that pulls the gas through the module’s
pneumatic lines.
Each module requires a minimum gas flow rate to operate reliably and accurately, therefore it is important to
make sure that the pump(s) chosen are capable of meeting this minimum flow rate. One pump can be
connected to more than one module but the pump must be capable of achieving the total flow rate for all of the
modules to which it is attached.
Refer to the operator’s manuals for the modules included in your system for the specific gas flow rates for each
module.
Due to their sensitivity to possible fluctuations in gas glow rate and pressure caused by the opening and closing
of internal valves within other modules, all 9200 series gas measurement modules require a separate, dedicated
pump

To connect the pneumatic lines to the TMS 9000 system:
1. Attach a 1/4" exhaust line between the external pump(s) inlet port and the outlet ports of the system’s
gas measurement modules.
2. Attach an additional 1/4" exhaust line to the exhaust port of the pump.
Caution
The exhaust from the gas measurement modules needs to be vented outside the shelter
or immediate area surrounding the TMS 9000 system and conform to all safety
requirements using a maximum of 10 meters of 1/4” PTFE tubing.
3. Attach a sample supply line to the sample inlet port. Ideally, the pressure of the sample gas should be
equal to ambient atmospheric pressure.
• It is important that sample and calibration gases only come in contact with non-reactive substances.
Make sure that the gas supply lines are made of an appropriate material.

The most direct method for communicating with the TMS 9000 system is via the system’s display/keyboard
interface module. In most respects, the TMS 9000 system display/keyboard interface module is identical in
operation as the front panel display and keyboard found on any Teledyne Instruments’ E-Series gas analyzer.
As the software is operated, labels appear on the bottom row of the display directly above certain keys, defining
the function of that key as it is relevant for the operation being performed. Only keys over which a label appears
are active. Pressing an active key causes the associated instruction to be performed by the system. The keys
do not auto-repeat. In circumstances where the same key must be activated for two consecutive operations, it
must be released and re-pressed.
The most significant difference is a result of the TMS 9000 system’s modular design making it, in effect, several
instruments sharing one display and keyboard. The addition of a SCROLL key allows the user to select which
module is currently accessible by the display and keyboard.

The keyboard/display interface electronics watches the status of the nine front panel keys, alerts the Terminus
when keys are depressed, translates data from parallel to serial and back and manages communications
between the keyboard, the Terminus and the front panel display. Except for a keyboard interrupt status bit, all
communication between the Terminus and the keyboard/display are handled by way of the system’s I2C buss.
3.4.1.1. Scrolling Though the List of Modules
By default, the Terminus firmware is active on the display and keyboard. To switch to a different module press:

After electrical and pneumatic connections are made, turn on the system and supply power to the external
pump(s). The display should immediately display a single, horizontal dash in the upper left corner of the display.
This will last approximately 30 seconds while the Terminus’ CPU loads the operating system.
Once the CPU has completed this activity, it will begin loading the system firmware and configuration data.
During this process, a string of messages will appear on the system’s display/keyboard module as shown in

3.4.2.1. Module Detection during Initial Startup
The TMS 9000 system Terminus keeps a list of currently installed modules in memory. Whenever the system is
started it will poll the systems internal Modbus® and compare any modules found to those recorded on this list
(for more information about adding or removing modules to TMS 9000 system see Section 11.3).
If a module is discovered that does not match the list because either the Modbus® address (see Section 3.3.3.2)
or the type of module is different, a message will appear asking whether or not the user wishes to add the
module to the list.
The first time a TMS 9000 system is started this list will be empty so it will stop and ask the user to verify each
module (see Figure 3-18).
• Answering YES adds the module to the list.
• Answering NO does not add the module to the permanent list.
• Answering NO means that should the module be changed or fail and disappear from the buss the
Terminus will not be able issue a warning message. Also, every time the system is restarted it will
stop the start up process to ask if this module should be added and that should the module
malfunction and disappear
• The module is still recognized by the Terminus and operated normally. Data form the module is still
available for output and commands can still be issued to the module.
3.4.3. WARM-UP
The TMS 9000 system requires at least 60 minutes warm-up time before accurate gas measurements can be
taken. During that time, various portions of the system’s display/keyboard module will behave as follows.

3.4.4. WARNING MESSAGES
During warm-up, internal temperatures and other parameters may be outside of specified limits. The software
will suppress most warning conditions for 30 minutes after power up.
The following table includes a brief description of the various warning messages that may appear during or after
the system’s warm-up time has passed. If warning messages persist after 30 minutes, investigate their cause
using the troubleshooting guidelines in Chapter 11:

3.4.5. FUNCTIONAL CHECK
After the system’s components have warmed up for at least 60 minutes check to make sure that the systems
gas measurement modules are functioning within allowable operating parameters.
The operating manual for each gas measurement modules includes a list of test functions that are viewable
using the display/keyboard interface module. These test functions can be used to predict failures by looking at
trends in their values. They can also be used to isolate and identify many operational problems when combined
with a thorough understanding of the gas measurement modules’ theory of operation.
We recommend that the value of these functions be viewed and compared to the values that appear on the Test
and Validation Data Form accompanying the gas measurement module. Should any values fall outside the
limits listed on the form, contact Teledyne Instruments’ customer service dept.
EXAMPLE:

At this writing, the only test function available for the Terminus module is the TIME.
3.5. CALIBRATION
Before placing the TMS 9000 system into service, it is necessary to perform a calibration of each of the gas
measurement modules’. This initial calibration should be carried out using the same reporting range used during
the module’s factory calibration as listed on the Final Test and Validation Data Sheet shipped with the module.
3.5.1. REQUIRED EQUIPMENT, SUPPLIES, AND EXPENDABLES
Calibration of the TMS 9000 system requires a certain amount of equipment and supplies. These include, but
are not limited to, the following:
• Zero-air source.
• Span gas source for each gas type.
• A recording device such as a strip-chart recorder and/or data logger (optional). For electronic
documentation, the internal data acquisition system can be used.

3.5.2. ZERO AIR
Zero air is similar in chemical composition to the Earth’s atmosphere but scrubbed of all components that might
affect the system’s readings. See the operator’s manual for each of the gas measurement modules in you
system for specific information of possible interfering substances that should be specifically removed from your
zero air source. Zero air should be devoid of water vapor.
Devices such as the API Model 701 zero air generator that condition ambient air by drying and removal of
pollutants are available. We recommend this type of device for generating zero air.
3.5.3. SPAN CALIBRATION GAS STANDARDS & TRACEABILITY
Span gas is specifically mixed to match the chemical composition of the gas being measured and should have a
concentration of about 80% of the desired full measurement range for the module being calibrated. For
example. Span gases should be certified to a specific accuracy to ensure accurate calibration of the system.
Where ever possible calibration gases should be verified against standards of the National Institute for
Standards and Technology (NIST). To ensure NIST traceability, we recommend acquiring cylinders of working
gas that are certified to be traceable to NIST standard reference materials (SRM). The following table list some
typical NIST SRM’s that are suitable for use with TMS 9000 system gas measurement modules.

3.5.4. GENERAL CALIBRATION NOTES
While the specific calibration procedures for each gas measurement modules differ and are described in detail in
the operator’s manual for that manual there are some general characteristics that a common between all
modules.
• Use the scroll key on the display/keyboard interface module to select the module to be calibrated
• Make sure that the gas concentration is being displayed in the message field of the display.
• Perform the zero point cal on each module first.
• Remove the sample gas sources from the module’s gas inlet.
• Once the zero air or calibration gases are applied to the modules gas inlet it is imperative to wait until the
previous gas is completely purged from the inlet line and the module’s internal pneumatics.
• This can up to 10-15 minutes
• Watch the concentration value on the display. Wait until is stabilizes.
• Once the final step of each module’s specific zero point or span point calibration procedure is activated
the SLOPE and OFFSET for that module is immediately recalculated.
• The previous values for the parameters will be lost.
•
Be very careful to do this only when the proper gas zero air or span calibration gas for that module is
being supplied to the module.

4.1. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: How often do I need to change the particulate filters on the gas measurement modules sample supply lines?
A: Once per week. Table 10-1 contains a maintenance schedule listing the most important, regular
maintenance tasks. Highly polluted sample air may require changes that are more frequent.
Q: How long does the sample pump last?
A: The sample pump should last one to two years and the pump head should be replaced when necessary.
Q: Why does my RS-232 / Ethernet connection not work?
A: There are several possible reasons:
1. The wrong cable (do not use a “null-modem” type cable);
2. The I/O port Selector Switch on the Terminus is not set properly (see Section 3.3.2);
3. The baud rate of the analyzer’s COM port does not match that of the serial port of your computer/data
logger (see Sections 6.6.2.3 and 6.6.4.1)

DIAG - Acronym for diagnostics, the diagnostic menu or settings of the system
DHCP: acronym for dynamic host configuration protocol. A protocol used by LAN or Internet servers to set up
the interface protocols automatically between themselves and any other addressable device connected to the
network.
DOC – Acronym for Disk On Chip, the system’s central storage area for system operating system, firmware and
data. This is a solid-state device without mechanical parts that acts as a computer hard disk drive under DOS
with disk drive label “C”. DOC chips come with 8 mb space in the E-series system standard configuration but
are available in larger sizes
DOS - Disk Operating System. The E-series systems use DR DOS
EEPROM - also referred to as a FLASH chip.
FEP - Acronym for Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene polymer, one of the polymers that du Pont markets as

MODBUS® – Modbus® is an application layer, request/reply messaging protocol that provides client/server
communication between devices connected on different types of buses or networks. There are three versions of
Modbus®:
• Modbus® RTU - When devices communicate on a MODBUS serial line using the RTU (Remote Terminal
Unit) mode, each 8–bit byte in a message contains two 4–bit hexadecimal characters. The main
advantage of this mode is that its greater character density allows better data throughput than ASCII
mode for the same baud rate. Each message must be transmitted in a continuous stream of
characters.
• Modbus® ASCII - When devices are setup to communicate on a MODBUS serial line using ASCII
(American Standard Code for Information Interchange) mode, each 8–bit byte in a message is sent as
two ASCII characters. This mode is used when the physical communication link or the capabilities of
the device does not allow the conformance with RTU mode requirements regarding timers
management.
• Modbus® TCP/IP – A variant of the MODBUS family that covers the use of MODBUS messaging in an
‘Intranet’ or ‘Internet’ environment using the TCP/IP protocols. The most common use of these protocols
at this time are for Ethernet attachment of PLC’s, I/O modules, and ‘gateways’ to other simple field buses
or I/O networks.
PCA - Acronym for Printed Circuit Assembly, this is the Æ PCB with electronic components installed and ready

5. OPTIONAL HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE
5.1. GAS MEASUREMENT MODULES
This section includes a description of the hardware and software options available for the TMS 9000 System.
Each module is a stand-alone, microprocessor-controlled, gas sensor. Calibration of these modules is
performed in software and usually does not require physical adjustments to the system or its gas measurement
modules. During calibration, the microprocessor measures the sensor output signal when known amounts of the
target gas(es) are supplied calculates a slope and offset based on these measurements and stores these
measurements in non-volatile memory. These calibration values, along with other performance parameters, are
used to compute final concentration values.
The measured concentration values are stored in the modules temporary memory registers and reported either
via the system’s display/keyboard interface module or to an external datalogger or terminal device through the
Terminus’ I/O port.
Each module requires an external pump be pneumatically connected to its exhaust gas port and that sample and
calibration gases be supplied at ambient atmospheric pressure in order to establish a constant gas flow through
the module’s sensor suite.
5.1.1. TMS 9020 O2 GAS MEASUREMENT MODULE
The 9020 gas measurement modules determine the molecular oxygen (O2) of the gas stream using a
paramagnetic measurement method. It takes advantage of molecular oxygen’s reactivity with magnetic fields to
generate a variable current that reflects the O2 content of the gas stream.

5.1.2. TMS 9060 CO2 GAS MEASUREMENT MODULE
The 9060 gas measurement module uses a silicon based non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensor and a singlebeam, dual wavelength measurement method to measures the CO2 concentration in the sample gas stream.
The module computes the ratio between a reference signal and a measurement signal to determine the degree
of light absorbed by CO2 present in the gas stream. This dual wavelength method the CO2 measurement
allows the module to compensate for ancillary effects like sensor aging and contamination.

5.1.3. TMS 9100 SO2 GAS MEASUREMENT MODULE
The 9100 series gas measurement modules utilize a gas fluorescence measurement technique to determine the
SO2 content of the gas sample stream. Sample gas is exposed to ultraviolet light as it passes though the
module’s sensor suite causing the SO2 become excited SO2*. As these SO2* molecules decay into SO2 they
fluoresce. The module measures the amount of fluorescence to determine the amount of SO2 present in the
sample gas.

5.1.4. TMS 9200 NOX GAS MEASUREMENT MODULES
The 9200 series gas measurement modules uses a chemiluminescence measurement technique to determine
the concentration of nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and total nitrogen oxides (NOx, the sum of NO and
NO2) in the sample gas stream. Sample gas is exposed to ozone (O3), causing a chemical reaction that gives

amount of NO in the sample gas. A catalytic-reactive converter converts any NO2 in the sample gas to NO,
which is then measured and added to the original NO measurement and reported as the NOx content. NO2 is
calculated as the difference between the NOx measurement and the NO measurement.

5.1.5. TMS 9300 CO AND CO2 GAS MEASUREMENT MODULES
The 9300 series gas measurement modules use a gas filter correlation method for measuring the amount of
CO/CO2 present in the sample gas stream. A high-energy heated element generates a beam of IR light with a
known intensity (measured during Module calibration). This beam is directed through a multi-pass cell filled with
sample gas where some of the IR light is absorbed by the CO/CO2 present in the gas.
To overcome the interfering effects of substances such as water vapor (which also absorbs IR light) the light
beam is directed through a spinning wheel that includes two transparent, sealed chambers. One chamber, the

measure cell, is filled with pure N2. The other, the reference cell, is filled with a combination of N2 and a high
concentration of CO or CO2 (depending on module type). As the GFC wheel spins, the IR light alternately
passes through the two cavities.
• When the beam is exposed to the reference cell, the CO/CO2 in the gas filter wheel strips the beam of
almost all of the IR.
• When the light beam is exposed to the measurement cell, the N2 in the filter wheel does not absorb IR
light.
The 9300 series gas measurement modules determine the amount of CO/CO2 in the sample gas stream by
computing the ratio between these two conditions and comparing the ratio to a look-up table. Interpolation is
used to linearize the response of the sensor. This linearized value is combined with calibration slope and offset
values, which are then normalized for changes in gas pressure to produce the CO concentration.

6. OPERATING THE TMS 9000 TERMINUS
To assist in navigating the system’s software, a series of menu trees can be found in Appendix A of this manual.
NOTE
The flowcharts in this chapter depict the manner in which the display/keyboard
interface module is used to operate the TMS 9000 system.
They depict typical representations of the system’s display during the various
operations being described. They are not intended to be exact and may differ slightly
from the actual display of your system.
NOTE
The ENTR key may disappear if you select a setting that is invalid or out of the allowable
range for that parameter, such as trying to set the 24-hour clock to 25:00:00. Once you
adjust the setting to an allowable value, the ENTR key will re-appear.
6.1. OVERVIEW OF OPERATING MODES
The various modules of TMS 9000 system have a variety of operating modes.
Press the SCROLL key to change the module currently being accessed by the display/keyboard interface
module.

following Terminus functions.
• Version: This menu contains a list of revisions and versions of software and hardware that was used

• Password: Used to activate/deactivate the various levels of password security built into the system
firmware.

the Terminus operate.
• Diagnostic: As and aide to diagnosing problems with the system, this menu allows observation of the
current value and status of certain digital and analog signals in the Terminus and gas measurement
modules.

The TMS 9000 system gas measurement modules have three operating modes.
• SAMPLE mode: in this mode the display shows the following:
• Mode Field: In SAMPLE mode, this field displays the gas type the module is measuring. The
number following the gas type is the internal Modbus® address of the module (see Section 3.3.3.2).
• Message Field: This field will display a variety of measurement functions depending on the type of
gas measurement modules. By default, the currently measured concentration of the module’s target
gas is displayed.
• CALIBRATION mode: Pressing the CALS or CALZ keys switches the module into calibration mode.
• The CALZ key is used to initiate a calibration of the zero point.
• The CALS key is used to calibrate the span point of the system.
See the Operator’s Manual for the gas measurement module type for detailed information about
calibration and calibration checks.
• SETUP mode:
• Version: This menu contains a list of revisions and versions of software and hardware that was used
in constructing this gas measurement module.

6.4. SETUP Æ PASS: PASSWORD FEATURE
The TMS 9000 provides password protection of the calibration and setup functions to prevent unauthorized
adjustments. When the passwords have been enabled in the PASS menu item, the system will prompt the user
for a password anytime a password-protected function is requested.
There are three levels of password protection, which correspond to operator, maintenance and configuration
functions. Each level allows access to all of the functions in the previous level.

The TMS 9000 is equipped with an I/O communication port that can be configured at the factory as either an RS232 port or as an Ethernet compatible LAN port. The COMM menu includes functions that allow the user to
setup and manage the I/O function.
• Sections 6.6.2 and 6.6.3 describe the setup and use of the system’s I/O port is configured for RS-232
communications.
• Section 6.6.4 describes how to set up the port when it is configured for Ethernet communications
6.6.1. SYSTEM ADDRESS & MACHINE ID
The TMS 9000 system is designed to support its use in a network that can include more than one TMS 9000
system as well as other types of data gathering instruments, controllers, PLC device, etc. To that end, the TMS
9000 system firmware includes two methods for distinguishing each system as a separate, unique location on
the network.
• Machine ID: This identifier is used when the method for communicating with the instruments on the
network is not Modbus® such as a terminal emulator or Teledyne Instruments’ APICOM.
• System Address: This identifier is used when the communication method used on the network is one of
the Modbus® variants.
6.6.1.1. SETUP Æ COMM Æ ID: Setting the Machine ID
The default Machine ID code for all TMS 9000 systems is 9000.

The TMS 9000 system actually has two I/O ports.
• COM1 is used for internal RS-485 communications between the Terminus and the gas measurement
modules. Its setup is not adjustable by the user.
• COM2 is used for external communications and it this port that the operations described following
sections affect.
On systems configured for RS-232 I/O communications a sub-menu, titled COM2 will appear under the
SETUP Æ COMM menu that allows the user to adjust various aspects of the system’s RS-232 operation over
the COM2 I/O port.

6.6.2.1. RS-232 Default Settings
RS-232 was developed for allowing communications between data terminal equipment (DTE) and data
communication equipment (DCE). Basic terminals always fall into the DTE category whereas modems are
always considered DCE devices.
When received from the factory configured for RS-232, the system’s COM2 port is set up to emulate a DTE
terminal with the following settings.
• OPERATING MODE: PARITY = None
DATA BITS = 8 data bits with 1 stop bit.
• BAUD RATE: 19200 bits per second.
For information in how to connect the system to a standard DCE modem, see Section 3.3.2.1.
6.6.2.2. COM2 RS-232 Port Communication Modes

Also, make sure the system’s RS-232 COM2 port is set for a baud rate that is compatible with the modem and
that the modem is designed to operate with an 8-bit word length with one stop bit.
After the cable connections have been made, the systems COM2 port must be setup appropriately. This is a
three-step process.

6.6.4. SETUP ÆCOMM Æ INET: ETHERNET PORT SETUP
When received from the factory configured for Ethernet compatibility, the system can be connected to any
standard 10BaseT Ethernet network via low-cost network hubs, switches or routers. The interface operates as a
standard TCP/IP device on port 3000. This allows a remote computer to connect through the internet to the
system using APICOM, terminal emulators or other programs that are compatible with Ethernet.
6.6.4.1. Ethernet Default Settings
The firmware on board the Ethernet card automatically sets the communication modes (see Section 6.6.2.2) and
baud rate (115 200) for the COM2 port. These are not user editable.
When the TMS 9000 system is configured with the Ethernet card active the COM2 submenu (used to setup and
manage RS-232 communications) is replaced by a new submenu, INET. This submenu is used to manage and
configure the Ethernet interface with your LAN or Internet Server(s).

6.6.4.2. Configuring the Ethernet Interface Option using DHCP
The Ethernet option for you TMS 9000 uses Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) which will
automatically configure the system’s interface with your LAN if your network servers are also running DHCP.
The system will do this the first time you turn it on after it has been physically connected to your network. Once
the system is connected and turned on, it will appear as an active device on your network without any extra set
up steps or lengthy procedures.
Should you need to, the Ethernet configuration properties are viewable via the system’s display display/keyboard
module.

There are several circumstances when you may need to configure the interface settings of the system’s Ethernet
card manually using the INET sub-menu:
• Your LAN is not running a DHCP software package,
• The DHCP software is unable to initialize the system’s interface;
• You wish to program the interface with a specific set of IP addresses that may not be the ones
automatically chosen by DHCP.

The TMS 9000 system has several-user adjustable software variables, which define certain operational
parameters. Usually, these variables are automatically set by the system’s firmware, but can be manually redefined using the VARS menu. Table 6-5 lists all variables that are available within the 818 password protected
level for the current revision of the Terminus firmware.

A series of diagnostic tools is grouped together under the SETUP-MORE-DIAG menu. These parameters are
dependent on firmware revision. These tools can be used in a variety of troubleshooting and diagnostic
procedures and are referred to in many places of the maintenance and trouble-shooting sections.
Currently the only submenu appearing under the Terminus DIAG menu is SIGNAL I/O. This submenu allows
observation of certain digital and analog signals in the system.
NOTE
Other types of DIAG features may be added to the TMS 9000 system Terminus firmware
in the future.
Individual gas measurement modules may include a more extensive list of DIAG
features. Refer to the operator’s manual for each type of module.

The signal I/O diagnostic mode allows the user to review and change the digital and analog input/output

7. REMOTE OPERATION OF THE TMS 9000 SYSTEM
7.1. COMMUNICATION WITH EXTERNAL DEVICES
The Terminus is the I/O point for the TMS9000 system. The Terminus handles all data requests for all modules.
If the serial port is in ModBus® protocol mode, then ModBus® commands are passed through to the individual
modules. While each gas measurement modules can be directly to an RS-485 device or network this is not
advisable and most likely will only be done under very rare circumstances.
Ideally, communications with the gas measurement modules or a specific TMS 9000 system should be
accomplished via the systems Terminus. Its firmware and COMM port are designed to be more flexible in order
to allow interaction with a wide variety of peripheral devices.
•
The baud rate can be changed.
•
The Terminus serial port supports several different protocols. The terminus COMM port is RS232 by
default, but can be configured for Ethernet communications instead. .
•
Since terminals and computers use different communication schemes, therefore the Terminus COMM
port supports two communicate modes specifically designed to interface with these two types of devices.
•
Where as the TMS9000 gas measurement modules can be connected to generic ModBus® controllers
without the terminus as a slave unit that talks ModBus® RTU protocol, The terminus can communicate
to outside ModBus® controllers using either the ModBus® RTU or ASCII protocols.
•
The terminus also allows the user to interact with the gas measurement modules using Hyperterminal or
some other ASCII terminal program, as well as Teledyne Instruments’ APICOM display/keyboard
interface module emulator.
•
The terminus must be configured to support the ASCII command line protocol over its external port.
7.1.1. BASIC TMS 9000 SYSTEM COMMUNICATION PROTOCOLS
7.1.1.1. ModBus® Serial RTU
The binary ModBus® protocol. When devices communicate on a ModBus® serial line using the RTU (Remote
Terminal Unit) mode, each 8–bit byte in a message contains two 4–bit hexadecimal characters. The main
advantage of this mode is that its greater character density allows better data throughput than ASCII mode for
the same baud rate. Each message must be transmitted in a continuous stream of characters.
This is the protocol that is used by the Terminus for internal communications with the systems various modules.
7.1.1.2. ModBus® TCP/IP
While the Terminus may be configured to communicate via an Ethernet connection, the TMS 9000 system does
not currently support ModBus® TCP/IP. ModBus® RTU, ModBus® Serial ASCII or Teledyne Instruments’ own
Serial Command Line language must be used.

7.1.1.3. ModBus® Serial ASCII
This is an ASCII version of the ModBus® protocol. It allows computers to use 7-bit (ASCII) data instead of the 8bit binary data. The commands all require checksums, which can be time consuming to compute manually.
When devices are setup to communicate on a MODBUS serial line using ASCII (American Standard Code for
Information Interchange) mode, each 8–bit byte in a message is sent as two ASCII characters. This mode is
used when the physical communication link or the capabilities of the device does not allow the conformance with
RTU mode requirements regarding timers management.
NOTE
Do not try to use this protocol with a terminal emulator program.
The terminus recognizes ModBus® ASCII messages of the form:

This set of commands allows the user to interact with the TMS 9000 system and its gas measurement modules
via the Terminus COM2 I/O port by using a terminal emulator program such as Hyperterminal to issue ASCII
commands. This ASCII protocol is very similar to that for E Series TAPI analyzers and can be used regardless
of whether the Terminus’ COM2 port is configured for Ethernet or RS-232 communications.

7.2.1. GENERAL TMS 9000 SYSTEM MODBUS® RTU INFORMATION
The TMS 9000 system can communicate with external ModBus® controllers using either the ModBus® RTU or
ASCII protocols, however the user must activate the appropriate communication mode (see Section 6.6.2.2).
The communications protocol for the TMS9000 internal communications bus is a minor variation of the industry
standard ModBus® RTU protocol. Using ModBus® RTU it is possible to communicate with a gas measurement
modules directly or via a Terminus. The TMS9000 gas measurement modules implement the ModBus® protocol
with the following options and exceptions:
•
Some registers, primarily calibration registers, do not return command responses within the timeout
interval specified by the ModBus® protocol.
•
In a TMS9000, the 4 address spaces of the ModBus® protocol all overlap at address 0. This means that
holding register 0 is exactly the same as input register 0, and all of the 16 bits of the holding register can
be read out as coils or discrete inputs (0 - 15).
•
The following ModBus® function codes are not implemented in the TMS9000:

7.2.2. MODBUS® RTU REGISTERS AND PROCESSES
7.2.2.1. ModBus® RTU Registers as Implemented in the TMS 9000 System.
All ModBus® communications are done via ModBus® registers. All data is stored in registers, each of which has
a 16-bit numeric addresses. There are several different data types in the instrument, including bit, byte, 16-bit
integer and floating point. The floating-point numbers are 32-bit values taking up two consecutive16-bit
registers.
ModBus® bases its data model on a group of register types that have distinguishing characteristics. The four

7.2.2.2. ModBus® RTU Processes as Implemented in the TMS 9000 System.
All registers are grouped into croups called processes. A process is a collection of functions, persistent data
values and ModBus® registers designed to support a specific set of tasks within the module. For instance, in a
TMS 9200M NOx gas measurement module:
•
The control loop controlling some temperature of the reaction cell is one process.
•
The calculations to determine the SLOPE and OFFSET of one of the modules calibration ranges is
another process.
The advantage of grouping registers by processes is that the data related to a single process can be requested
with just one command.
Assigning and mapping register and processes is the primary method for customizing ModBus® for a particular
device and application. How many and what type of registers is determined by the number and types of
functions and operating modes that make up the processes performed by the device and how they are
partitioned. Each of these functions is assigned a data register or set of registers, as are the various modes
associated with each process.
For example, the operation of a specific TMS 9000 system gas measurement module might be organized as

7.2.3. FAST AND SLOW REGISTER BLOCKS
The TMS 9000 system ModBus® protocol is organized into two types of register blocks.
Every process has two process blocks in the ModBus® register address space. A fast block and a slow block.
•
Fast block registers are always read-only registers. They are used for values that are required to be
continuously monitored by the Terminus. This includes functions and modes that that report status, raw
readings and output those values to the Terminus.
•
Slow block registers are used to control the modules operation or change its configuration. Control
registers are used less frequently by the Terminus, since the modules are supposed to be able to
operate as stand-alone devices.
Organizing the TMS 9000 system gas measurement modules registers this way means that the information
needed most often is situated in one contiguous, smaller block.
This takes advantage of one of ModBus®’ advantages and avoids one of its drawbacks. Because ModBus® can
only transfer 250 bytes of data at one time it is time consuming to poll all of the registers continuously in a
certain module using multiple commands every polling cycle. On the other hand, ModBus’® has the ability
transfer the contents of a small group of contiguous registers with one command. Thus, the user can quickly
transfer, with only one command, all of the more significant register values every time a module is polled.

7.2.3.1. Register Block Outline
In the TMS 9000 system firmware, register are divided into blocks of $1000(hexadecimal) registers. This means
that the block has enough space for 1024 floating-point values. In each block, the bit addressing handles 1/16th
of the address space of the registers.
This block size is actually the maximum range that the bit address commands can cover. Data registers could
extend beyond this block range, but bit addresses cannot.

The REGMAP table for each module is a minimal description of the processes and ModBus® registers in a
module. Only ModBus® registers are called out in the REGMAP. Other types of memory that may exist
internally in the module do not appear in the register map.
Functions within the module software are broken down into sub-partitions called processes. Each type of
process is assigned a process ID:

ADC channels; RAM, flash memory or ModBus® registers.
7.2.4.1. TMS 9000 System Firmware Register Callouts within the REGMAP
The TMS 9000 system firmware uses a simple list with a preceding item count to construct the Register map.
Each Item includes:
• Process Entry: 16 bytes (8 registers) plus all register entries for this process:
• Process ID: (2 bytes)Process ID Code (see Table 7-4)
• Process Name: (11 bytes, 5.5 registers)
• Process Index: (1 byte, 0.5 registers)
• Number of Registers: (2 bytes) # of registers in the REGMAP table
• Register Table: (Total: 8 bytes * # of entries(N) in register table, 4 * n ModBus® registers)
The structure for each register table entry is as follows:
o Register Format (1 byte): Data format of this register can be floating point, byte, integer or an
array of any of these.
o Register Specification Code (2 bytes): This field is allows the Terminus firmware a chance to
guess at an appropriate label for a module code when it doesn’t have a full description of the type
of module. The method by which this of this field is USED not yet firmly specified therefore it is
not yet implemented.
o Top Byte: The top byte is a code indicating the parameter type. See Table 7-5 below
o Bottom Byte (optional): This includes:
- Top nibble: Indicates the units used for the parameter in this register. Interpretation of this value is
dependant on the parameter type code in the top byte.
- Bits 2-3: Reserved for future use
- Bits 0-1: index value (to discern between inlet and outlet pressure of a module for instance)

NOTE
Changes in the registers between firmware version (e.g. new processes representing
new features; deleted or added registers to existing processes) could cause changes the
register map of a single process and frequently result in offsetting the registers of other
processes.
It is therefore important to know which version of software the module is running and
to use the proper register map for that version.
It is HIGHLY recommended that the user’s interface software store register maps in an
internal lookup table so that register addresses can be dynamically updated to match
whatever software version is running in the attached TMS9000 module after module
replacement or software upgrade.

7.3. USING TELEDYNE INSTRUMENTS’ ASCII COMMAND LINE
PROTOCOL WITH THE TMS 9000 SYSTEM
7.3.1. OVERVIEW AND SET UP
Teledyne Instruments’ ASCII Command line protocol is very similar to that for E Series TAPI analyzers. This set
of commands allows the user to interact with the TMS 9000 system and its gas measurement modules via the
Terminus COM2 I/O port by using a terminal emulator program such as Hyperterminal to issue ASCII
commands.
While it can be used when the Terminus’ COM2 port is configured for either Ethernet or RS-232 communications
there is some set up required based on which of these two communications methods are in use.
NOTE
The Teledyne Instruments ASCII command line protocol only functions when
communication with the TMS 9200M module is performed via the Terminus.
It is not available when communicating with the module directly via its RS-485 port.
Direct RS-485 communications with a module must be made via either
ModBus® RTU or ModBus® ASCII protocol.
7.3.1.1. Set up for Computer Mode
This mode is used when the system is connected to a computer with a dedicated interface program such as
Teledyne Instruments’ APICOM. More information regarding APICOM can be found in later in this section or on
the Teledyne Instruments website at http://www.teledyne-api.com/software/apicom/.
To place the TMS 9000 system in computer mode, follow the instructions found in Sections 6.6.2.2 to set the
following modes:
• QUIET mode (ID 1) = ON
• COMPUTER mode (ID 2) = ON
• HARDWARE HANDSHAKE mode (ID 8) = ON
7.3.1.2. Set up of Interactive mode
This mode is used with terminal emulation programs such as HyperTerminal or a “dumb” computer terminal.
The commands that are used to operate the system in this mode are listed in Table 7-7 and 7-8.
To place the TMS 9000 system in interactive mode follow the instructions found in Sections 6.6.2.2 and set the
following modes
• QUIET mode (ID 1) = OFF
• COMPUTER mode (ID 2) = OFF
• HARDWARE HANDSHAKE mode (ID 8) = ON

7.3.2. TMS 9000 SYSTEM MODBUS® ASCII REGISTER NAMES
Using Teledyne Instruments’ ASCII Command protocol requires an understanding of the names of individual
registers and formatting conventions for those names.
TMS 9000 system ModBus® registers actually have two names:
7.3.2.1. Internal Name
This is the name assigned to the module for internal use by the TMS 9000 system and individual gas
measurement module firmware. The format for internal names is:
[Module Name].[Process Name].[Register Name]
Where:
Module Name
The name for the module is the Gas Type of the module and the Module Address
Number (see Section 3.3.3.2) separated by an underscore character (e.g.
NOX_1; CO_3; NOX_4; O2_1; etc.).
Process Name
Name of the process group to which the register belongs.
Register Name
The name of the register itself.

concNox1: This process calculates the NOx concentration for RANGE1 of the

This is the name that is appears on the display/keyboard interface module when the contents of a specific
register is viewed as either a Test Function or a VARS value. The format for internal names is:

7.3.4. THE “M” COMMAND SET
The most significant difference between the TMS 9000 system implementation of Teledyne Instruments’ ASCII
command line language is the addition of a set of commands that allow access to the ModBus® registers of the
various gas measurement modules.
7.3.4.1. M LIST Command
M LIST causes the TMS 9000 system to lists all the registers in all the modules by their external names and their
contents.
The syntax for this command is: M LIST<CR>
The response will be a list where each register is represented as a string of ASCII characters separated by a
carriage return. The syntax of each line is:
M [Time] [Machine ID] [External Register Name]=[Value]

The M LIST command can also be modified to focus the scope of the query to a group of registers by adding a
pattern string to the command that matches the text contained in some one or more of the external names of a
module's registers.

LIST command, it can include an optional pattern string to focus the query.

Most of the TMS 9000 system ModBus® registers are read-only however some can be assigned values. There
are several ways to determine if a register is settable or if it is read-only. The list of ModBus® registers found in
each of the individual gas measurement modules operator manuals includes this information. Additionally, in the
lists generated by the M-LIST command a range of values appears in parenthesis at the end of the line for that
register.

7.4. STATUS REPORTING
Reporting of status messages as an audit trail is one of the three principal uses for the RS-232 interface (the
other two being the command line interface for controlling the system and the download of data in electronic
format). You can effectively disable the reporting feature by setting the interface to quiet mode (see Section
6.6.2.2).
Warning messages, calibration and diagnostic status messages. Refer to Appendix A- for a list of the possible
messages, and this section for information on controlling the system through the RS-232 interface.
GENERAL MESSAGE FORMAT
All messages from the system (including those in response to a command line request) are in the format:

Where

is a command type designator, usually a single character indicating the message type,
as shown in the Table 7-7.
DDD:HH:MM
is the time stamp, the date and time when the message was issued. It consists of the
Day-of-year (DDD) as a number from 1 to 366, the hour of the day (HH) as a number
from 00 to 23, and the minute (MM) as a number from 00 to 59.
[ID]
is the system ID, a number with 1 to 4 digits.
MESSAGE
is the message content that may contain warning messages, test measurements, iDAS
reports, variable values, etc.
<CRLF>
is a carriage return / line feed pair, which terminates the message.
The uniform nature of the output messages makes it easy for a host computer to parse them into an easy
structure. Keep in mind that the display/keyboard interface module does not give any information on the time a
message was issued; hence, it is useful to log such messages for trouble-shooting and reference purposes.
Terminal emulation programs such as HyperTerminal can capture these messages to text files for later review.

7.5. COM2 PORT PASSWORD SECURITY
In order to provide security for remote access of the TMS 9000 system, a LOGON feature can be enabled to
require a password before the system will accept commands. This is done by turning on the SECURITY MODE
(see Section 6.6.2.2). Once the SECURITY MODE is enabled, the following items apply.
•
A password is required before the port will respond or pass on commands.
•
If the port is inactive for one hour, it will automatically logoff, which can also be achieved with the
LOGOFF command.
•
Three unsuccessful attempts to log on with an incorrect password will cause subsequent logins to be
disabled for 1 hour, even if the correct password is used.
•
If not logged on, the only active command is the '?' request for the help screen.
•
The following messages will be returned at logon:

LOGON SUCCESSFUL - Correct password given
o
LOGON FAILED - Password not given or incorrect
o
LOGOFF SUCCESSFUL - Connection terminated successfully
To log on to the System enable the SECURITY MODE feature (see Section 6.6.2.2) then type “LOGON

7.6. APICOM REMOTE CONTROL PROGRAM
Teledyne Instruments’ APICOM is an easy-to-use, yet powerful interface program that allows access to and
control of the TMS 9000 system from a remote connection through direct cable, modem or Ethernet. It perfectly
emulates the display/keyboard interface module both in terms of look and function.
When running APICOM, a user can:
• Establish a link from a remote location to the SYSTEM through direct cable connection via RS-232
modem or Ethernet.
• View the system’s display and keyboard and remotely access all functions that could be accessed when
standing in front of the system.
• Remotely edit system parameters and set points.
• Download, view, graph and save data for predictive diagnostics or data analysis.
• Retrieve, view, edit, save and upload iDAS configurations.
• Check on system parameters for trouble-shooting and quality control.
APICOM is very helpful for initial setup, data analysis, maintenance and trouble-shooting.

9. THEORY OF OPERATION
9.1. MEASUREMENT METHOD

9.3.1. TERMINUS PCA
The Terminus PCA is mounted in an aluminum casing at the lower left of the TMS 9000 system back panel (See
Figure 3-1). This printed circuit assembly is capable of providing a multitude of functions. Some of these
functions, such as A/D conversion, digital input/output channels and temperature sensor signal processing are
not currently implemented in the TMS 9000 system.
Currently the Terminus’ primary functions are to supply the physical communications link between:
• The system’s CPU card and the system’s display/keyboard interface module via an I2C buss.
•
The system’s gas measurement modules and the display/keyboard interface module.
• The system’s gas measurement modules and external devices.
It also contains some circuitry that is used during system power up.
9.3.1.1. I2C Data Buss
I2C is a two-wire, clocked, digital serial I/O bus that is used widely in commercial and consumer electronic
systems. A transceiver on the motherboard converts data and control signals from the PC-104 bus to I2C. The
data are then fed to the keyboard/display module.
Interface circuits on the keyboard/display module convert the I2C data to parallel inputs and outputs. An
additional interrupt line from the keyboard to the motherboard allows the CPU to recognize and service key
strokes on the keyboard.
9.3.1.2. Power-up Circuit
This circuit monitors the +5V power supply during system start-up and sets the analog outputs, external digital
I/O ports, and I2C circuitry to specific values until the CPU boots and the system software can establish control.
9.3.2. TERMINUS CPU PCA
The CPU is a low power (5 VDC, 0.8A max), high performance, 386-based microcomputer running a version of
the DOS operating system. Its operation and assembly conform to the PC-104 specification, version 2.3 for
embedded PC and PC/AT applications. It has 2 MB of DRAM memory built into the CPU chip itself and
operates at 40 MHz clock rate over an internal, 32-bit data and address bus. Chip to chip data handling is
performed by two 4-channel, direct memory access (DMA) devices over data busses of either 8-bit or 16-bit
bandwidth. The CPU supports both RS-232 and RS-485 serial protocols. Figure 9-2 shows the CPU board.
The CPU PCA includes PCA two types of non-volatile data storage, one disk-on-chip and one or two flash chips.
The CPU performs the following functions:
• Non-volatile storage of the TMS 9000 Terminus firmware
• Operation of the TMS 9000 Terminus firmware
• Communication interface between the display/keyboard interface module and the system’s various gas
measurement modules over a clocked, digital, serial I/O bus using the I2C protocol (read I-square-C bus).
• Routs DC Power to the display/keyboard interface module.
The CPU does not include any long-term data storage of information generated by the gas measurement
modules.

9.3.2.1. Disk On Chip
Technically, the disk-on-chip is an EEPROM, but appears to the CPU as, behaves as, and performs the same
functions in the system as an 8 mb disk drive, internally labeled as DOS drive C:\. It is used to store the
computer’s operating system files and the TMS 9000 Terminus firmware and peripheral files.
9.3.2.2. Flash Chip
The flash chip is another, smaller EEPROM with about 64 kb of space, internally labeled as DOS drive B:\. The
TMS 9000 CPU board can accommodate up to two EEPROM flash chips. The TMS 9000 standard
configuration is one chip with 64 kb of storage capacity, which is used to store the system configuration as
created during final checkout at the factory. Separating these data onto a less frequently accessed chip
significantly decreases the chance of data corruption through drive failure.
In the unlikely event that the flash chip should fail, the system will continue to operate with just the DOC.
However, all configuration information will be lost, requiring the unit to be recalibrated.

9.3.2.3. Terminus and CPU Status Indicator (Watchdog)
A red LED labeled DS5 in the upper portion of the Terminus PCA (Figure 9-2), just to the right of the CPU board,
flashes when the CPU is running the main program. After power-up, DS5 should flash on and off about once per
second.
The CPU board has two red LEDs, the lower of which is the watchdog timer (the device that pulses the
motherboard watchdog). This LED is labeled LED2 and blinks about twice per second (twice as fast as the
motherboard LED) when operating normally. LED1 above LED2 should always be on. However, both CPU
LEDs only indicate if the CPU is powered-up and generally working. The lower LED can continue to blink even if
the either CPU or firmware is locked up.
9.4. POWER DISTRIBUTION &CIRCUIT BREAKER
The TMS 9000 system operates in two main AC power ranges: 100-120 VAC and 220-240 VAC (both ± 10%)
between 47 and 63 Hz. A 5-amp circuit breaker is built into the ON/OFF switch. In case of a wiring fault or
incorrect supply power, the circuit breaker will automatically turn off the system.
CAUTION
Should the power circuit breaker trip correct the condition causing
this situation before turning the system back on.

9.5. COMMUNICATIONS INTERFACE
9.6. OVERVIEW OF TMS 9000M MODULE COMMUNICATIONS
Communications with the TMS 9000 system or one of its gas measurement modules is different from the
standard Teledyne Instruments E-Series analyzer. There are no analog output channels, external digital status
outputs or external digital control inputs. Where the E-series analyzers have two serial I/O ports that can be
configured for Ethernet, RS-232 or RS-485 (with or without multidrop), the TMS 9000 system Terminus has only
one port that can be configured for either RS-232 or Ethernet but not both.
9.6.1.1. Inter-module Communication
The internal COMM port for each TMS 9000 gas measurement module is RS485: 57600,N,8,1. Always. No
exceptions. Do not try using your laptop’s RS232 port or a modem port to communicate directly with a TMS
9000 system gas measurement module. It will not work.
The physical communications bus is an RS485 port with the following specifications:

All TMS 9000 system gas measurement modules talk party line RS485 and are set up as a small multidrop
network where the Terminus is the master and the modules are the slaves. Every module must have a slave or
module address that is unique within that TMS9000 system (see Section 3.3.3.2).
Should you need to connect directly to a TMS 9000 system gas measurement module you must use a device set
up for RS-485.
The physical connector on the controller PCA for each gas measurement module is J9. It is connected by wiring
harness to an 8-pin connector (BP1) that plugs into the power/RS-485 buss connector of each shelf bay

Keyboard and Display module Block Diagram
The keyboard/display module electronics of the TMS 9000 System watches the status of the nine keys, alerts
the CPU when keys are depressed, translates data from parallel to serial and back and manages
communications between the keyboard, the CPU and the display display/keyboard module. Except for the
Keyboard interrupt status bit, all communication between the CPU and the display/keyboard interface module is
handled by way of the system’s I2C buss. The CPU controls the clock signal and determines when the various
devices on the bus are allowed to talk or required to listen. Data packets are labeled with addresses that identify
for which device the information is intended.

KEYPAD DECODER
Each key on the display display/keyboard module communicates with a decoder IC via a separate analog line.
When a key is depressed the decoder chip notices the change of state of the associated signal; latches and
holds the state of all eight lines (in effect creating an 8-bit data word); alerts the key-depress-detect circuit (a flipflop IC); translates the 8-bit word into serial data and; sends this to the I2C interface chip.
KEY-DEPRESS-DETECT CIRCUIT
This circuit flips the state of one of the inputs to the I2C interface chip causing it to send an interrupt signal to the
CPU
I2C INTERFACE CHIP
• This IC performs several functions:
• Using a dedicated digital status bit, it sends an interrupt signal alerting the CPU that new data from the
keyboard is ready to send.
• Upon acknowledgement by the CPU that it has received the new keyboard data, The I2C interface chip
resets the key-depress-detect flip-flop.
• In response to commands from the CPU, it turns the display display/keyboard module status displays on
and off and activates the beeper.
• Informs the CPU when the optional maintenance and second language switches have been opened or
closed (see Chapter 5 for information on these options).
DISPLAY DATA DECODER
This decoder translates the serial data sent by the CPU (in TTY format) into a bitmapped image that is sent over
a parallel data bus to the display.
DISPLAY CONTROLLER
This circuit manages the interactions between the display data decoder and the display itself. It generates a
clock pulse that keeps the two devices synchronized. It can also, in response to commands from the CPU turn
off and/or reset the display.
DISPLAY POWER WATCHDOG
The TMS 9000 system’s display can begin to show garbled information or lock-up if the DC voltage supplied to it
falls too low, even momentarily. To alleviate this, a brownout watchdog circuit monitors the level of the power
supply and in the event that the voltage level falls below a certain level resets the display by turning it off, then
back on.
I2C LINK TO THE RELAY PCA
While the CPU’s I2C communication with the relay board is also routed through the keyboard/display module,
information passed to and from the relay board via this channel is not recognized by, acted upon or affected by
the circuitry of the keyboard.

9.7. SOFTWARE OPERATION
The TMS 9000 system’s core module is a high performance, 386-based microcomputer running a version of
DOS. On top of the DOS shell, special software developed by Teledyne Instruments interprets user commands
from various interfaces, performs procedures and tasks and stores data in the CPU’s memory device.

10. GENERAL MAINTENANCE
Predictive diagnostic functions, including data acquisition records, failure warnings and test functions are built
into the some modules of the TMS 9000 system. These can allow the user to determine when repairs are
necessary without performing unnecessary, preventative maintenance procedures. See the operator’s manual
for each module type for more information.
There is a minimal number of simple procedures that, when performed regularly, will ensure that the system
continues to operate accurately and reliably over its lifetime. Repair and troubleshooting procedures for the
Terminus are covered in Chapter 11 of this manual.

11. GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING & REPAIR
This section contains a variety of methods for identifying and solving performance problems with the TMS 9000
system.
NOTE
The operations outlined in this chapter must be performed by qualified
maintenance personnel only.
CAUTION

the system running.
Exercise caution to avoid electrical shocks and electrostatic or
mechanical damage to the system. Do not drop tools or touch electric
connections with metallic tools.
NOTE
The information in this Section is general in nature and meant to offer an overview of
TMS 9000 system troubleshooting methods.
For detailed troubleshooting and repair information on each module se the operator’s
manual for each module type.
11.1. GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
The TMS 9000 system has been designed so that problems can be rapidly detected, evaluated and repaired.
During operation, the system continuously performs diagnostic tests and provides the ability to evaluate its key
operating parameters without disturbing monitoring operations.
A systematic approach to troubleshooting will generally consist of the following five steps:
• Note any warning messages and take corrective action as necessary.
• Examine the values of all TEST functions related to the module in question and compare them to factory
values. Note any major deviations from the factory values and take corrective action.
• Use the internal electronic status LED’s present on various PCA within each module to determine
whether the electronic communication channels are operating properly.
• Verify that the AC/DC power supplies are operating properly.
• SUSPECT A LEAK FIRST!
The majority of all problems are eventually traced to leaks in the pneumatic system of the TMS 9000
system (including the external pumps), the source of zero air or span gases or the sample gas delivery
system. Check for gas flow problems such as clogged or blocked internal/external gas lines, damaged
seals, punctured gas lines, a damaged pump diaphragm, etc.

11.1.1. WARNING MESSAGES
The most common and/or serious system or module failures will result in a warning message displayed on the
display/keyboard interface module. See the operator’s manual for each module type for more information.
It should be noted that if more than two or three warning messages occur at the same time, it is often an
indication that some fundamental system sub-system (power supply, relay board, motherboard) has failed rather
than an indication of the specific failures referenced by the warnings. In this case, a combined-error analysis
needs to be performed.
The TMS 9000 system will alert the user that a warning is active by displaying the keypad labels MSG and CLR
on the front panel and a text message in the top centerline of the display as shown in this example:

11.1.2. FAULT DIAGNOSIS WITH TEST FUNCTIONS
Besides being useful as predictive diagnostic tools, the TEST functions available for each gas measurement
modules (viewable from the front panel) can be used to isolate and identify many operational problems when
combined with a thorough understanding of the modules theory of operation (See the operator’s manual for each
module type for more information).
We recommend using the APICOM remote control program to download, graph and archive TEST data for
analysis and long-term monitoring of diagnostic data
11.1.3. USING THE DIAGNOSTIC SIGNAL I/O FUNCTION
The signal I/O parameters found under the diagnostics (DIAG) menu for each module combined with a thorough
understanding of the module’s theory of operation (See the operator’s manual for each module type for more
information) are useful for troubleshooting in three ways:
• The technician can view the raw, unprocessed signal level of a module’s critical inputs and outputs.
• All of the components and functions that are normally under module control can be manually changed.
• Analog and digital output signals can be manually controlled.
This allows the user to observe the effect of these functions on the operation of the system or module i n a
systematic manner. Section 6.8.1 shows how to use the signal I/O menu to view the raw voltage of an input
signal or to control the state of an output voltage or control signal. The specific parameter will vary depending
on the situation.

11.2. GENERAL HINTS ABOUT GAS FLOW PROBLEMS
In general, flow problems can be divided into three categories:
• Flow is too high
• Flow is greater than zero, but is too low, and/or unstable
• Flow is zero (no flow)
When troubleshooting flow problems, it is essential to confirm the actual flow rate without relying on the flow rate
displayed on the display/keyboard interface module for the module in question. The use of an independent,
external flow meter to perform a flow check, as described in Section 11.2.7, is essential.
When diagnosing gas flow problems, be sure to refer to the gas flow diagrams located in the operator’s manual
for each module type.
11.2.1. ZERO OR LOW FLOW PROBLEMS
11.2.1.1. Sample Flow is Zero or Low
If the sample gas flow rate shown on the display/keyboard interface module for a particular module reads XXXX
for the sample flow (See the operator’s manual for each module type for more information), confirm that the
external sample pump is operating and configured for the proper AC voltage.
NOTE
Sample and vacuum pressures mentioned in this chapter refer to operation of the
system at sea level. Pressure values need to be adjusted for elevated locations, as the
ambient pressure decreases by about 1 in-Hg per 300 m / 1000 ft.
If the pump is operating but the unit reports a XXXX gas flow, make the following three checks:
• Check for actual sample flow.
• Disconnect the sample gas supply tube from the inlet port of the module in question
• Make sure that the module is in basic SAMPLE mode.
• Use a flow meter to measure the actual flow.
• If there is proper flow (see the individual gas measurement module operator’s manuals for flow
rates), contact customer service.
•
If there is no flow or low flow, continue with the next step.
• Using the display/keyboard interface module check the pressure test function for the module in question
(See the operator’s manual for each module type for more information and the correct sample pressure).
• If the pressure is low, there is probably a cross-leak between some of the internal pneumatic lines
inside the module.
• If the sample pressure is around their nominal values but the display/keyboard interface module still
displays XXXX, carry out a leak check as described in Section 11.2.6.
• If gas flows through the module during the above tests but goes to zero or is low when it is connected to
zero air or span gas, the flow problem is not internal to the module but likely caused by the gas source
such as calibrators/generators, empty gas tanks, clogged valves, regulators and gas lines.

11.2.2. HIGH FLOW
Flows that are significantly higher than the allowed operating range (typically ±10-11% of the nominal flow)
should not occur in the TMS 9000 system unless a pressurized sample, zero or span gas is supplied to the inlet
ports.
• Ensure to vent excess pressure and flow just before the module inlet port.
When supplying sample, zero or span gas at ambient pressure, a high flow would indicate that one or more of
the critical flow orifices inside the module are physically broken (very unlikely case), allowing more than nominal
flow, or were replaced with an orifice of wrong specifications. See the operator’s manual for each module type
for more information for instructions on locating and repairing critical flow orifices.
If the flows are within 15% higher than normal, we recommend that you re-calibrate the flow electronically (See
the operator’s manual for each module type for instruction) followed by a regular review of these flows over time
to see if the new setting is retained properly.
11.2.3. EXCESSIVELY NOISY GAS MEASUREMENT
Excessive noise levels under normal operation usually indicate leaks in the sample supply or the module itself.
Make sure that the sample or span gas supply is leak-free and carry out a detailed leak check.
Less often, the excessive signal noise is the result of instability of the modules sensor suit electronics.
11.2.4. SLOW RESPONSE
If the module is responding too slowly to any changes in sample, zero or span gas, check for the following:
• Dirty or plugged sample filter or sample lines.
• Sample inlet line is too long.
• Leaking valve. Carry out a leak check.
• Dirty or plugged critical flow orifices. Check flows, pressures and, if necessary, change orifices.
• Wrong materials in contact with sample (see Table 3-3).
• Dirty reaction cell or sample chamber. Clean the reaction cell or sample chamber.
• Insufficient time allowed for purging of lines upstream of the module switching from sample to calibration
gases.
11.2.5. SIMPLE VACUUM LEAK AND PUMP CHECK
Leaks are the most common cause of TMS 9000 system malfunction. This section presents a simple leak
check, whereas Section 11.2.6 details a more thorough procedure. The method described here is easy, fast and
detects, but does not locate, most leaks. It also verifies the sample pump condition.
1. Turn the system ON, and allow at least 30 minutes for flows to stabilize.
2. Cap the sample inlet port of the module under test (cap must be wrench-tight).
3. After several minutes, when the pressures have stabilized, note the SAMP sample pressure of module
(viewed via the display/keyboard interface module).

4. It the reading is less than 10 in-Hg-A, the module is free of large leaks. It is still possible that the module
has minor leaks.
5.
This also indicates that the pump is in good condition.
NOTE
A new pump will create a pressure reading of about 4 in-Hg-A (at sea level).
11.2.6. DETAILED PRESSURE LEAK CHECK
If a leak cannot be located by the above procedure, obtain a leak checker similar to Teledyne Instruments part
number 01960, which contains a small pump, shut-off valve and pressure gauge to create both over-pressure
and vacuum.
Alternatively, a tank of pressurized gas, with the two-stage regulator adjusted to ≤ 15 psi, a shutoff valve and
pressure gauge may be used.
1. Turn OFF power to the TMS 9000 system.
2. Install a leak checker or a tank of gas (compressed, oil-free air or nitrogen) as described above on the
sample inlet of the module.
3. Disconnect the pump tubing from the exhaust port of the module.
4. Pressurize the module with the leak checker or tank gas, allowing enough time to pressurize the module
fully through the critical flow orifice.
5. Check each tube connection (fittings, hose clamps) with soap bubble solution, looking for fine bubbles.
CAUTION
Once tube fittings have been wetted with soap solution under a pressurized system, do
not apply or re-apply vacuum, as this will cause soap solution to be sucked into the
module contaminating inside surfaces.
Do not exceed 15 psi when pressurizing the system.
6. Once the leak has been located and repaired, the leak-down rate of the indicated pressure should be
less than 1 in-Hg-A (0.4 psi) in 5 minutes after the pressure is turned off.
7. Clean surfaces from soap solution.
8. Re-connect the sample and pump lines.
9. Replace the instrument cover.
10. Restart the system.

11.2.7. PERFORMING A SAMPLE FLOW CHECK
CAUTION
Use a separate, calibrated flow meter capable of measuring flows between 0 and 1000
cm³/min to measure the gas flow rate though the module. Do not use the built in flow
measurement viewable from the display/keyboard interface module.
A decreasing, actual sample flow may point to slowly clogging pneumatic paths, most likely critical flow orifices
or sintered filters. To perform a sample flow check:
• Disconnect the sample inlet tubing from the modules sample gas inlet port.
• Attach the outlet port of a flow meter to the sample inlet port of the module. Ensure that the inlet to the
flow meter is at atmospheric pressure.
• The sample flow measured with the external flow meter should be within ± 10% of the nominal values for
the module (See the operator’s manual for each module type for more information).
• Low flows indicate blockage somewhere in the pneumatic pathway.
11.3. REMOVING OR ADDING A GAS MEASUREMENT MODULES
There are various circumstances where it may be necessary to remove, exchange or add a gas measurement
module to your TMS 9000 system.
• To remove a malfunctioning module for repair (see Section 11.3.1).
• To add measurement capability to the system by adding an additional module to a system (see Section
3.3.3).
• To exchange a properly functioning module for one that is out of order (see Section 11.3.2).
• To change the measurement suite of a system be substituting a module of one gas type with one of a
different type (see Section 11.3.2).
The flexibility inherent in the modular design of the TMS 9000 system makes this a simple process.
11.3.1. REMOVING A GAS MEASUREMENT MODULE
1. Turn of the TMS 9000 system.
2. Disconnect the sample gas line from the module’s inlet port.
• If the sample gas supply line is being shared by more than this module, make sure to close off the
just-opened branch of that line to prevent ambient air from contaminating the input of the other
modules.
3. Disconnect the exhaust pump gas line from the module’s exhaust pump.
• If the one pump is supplying gas flow for more than one module, the just-opened branch of the
exhaust line must be closed in order to maintain the correct gas flow rate through the other modules.
4. Disconnect the power/RS-485 buss connector for this module from the system backplane.
5. Restart the system.

If the removal of the module is going to be permanent, edit the module list stored in the Terminus
memory.
11.3.2. EXCHANGING GAS MEASUREMENT MODULES
To exchange one gas module for another:
• Follow the procedure described in 11.3.1 to remove the originally installed module.
• Follow the procedure described in Section 3.3.3.
• Edit the module list in the Terminus’ memory.
• In this case both the “ADD…” and “REMOVE…” messages will appear. The order will depend on the
module ID (see Section 3.3.3.2) set selected for each module.
• If the module being removed and the module being added are the same type of module and are set
for the same module ID, there is no need to edit the Terminus’ module list.
11.4. TERMINUS TROUBLESHOOTING
11.4.1. STATUS LED’S
Several color-coded, light-emitting diodes (LED) are located on the Terminus PCA’s) that can be used to
determine if the Terminus’ CPU and I2C communications bus are functioning properly.

11.4.1.1. Motherboard Status Indicator (Watchdog)
A red LED labeled DS5 in the upper portion of the Terminus, just to the right of the CPU board, flashes when the
CPU is running the main program. After power-up, DS5 should flash on and off about once per second. If
characters are visible on the front panel display but DS5 does not flash then the program files have become
corrupted. Contact customer service because it may be possible to recover operation of the Terminus.
• If 30 - 60 seconds after a restart occurs neither DS5 is flashing nor any characters are visible on the
display/keyboard interface module, the firmware may be corrupted or the CPU may be defective.
•
If DS5 is permanently off or permanently on, the CPU board is likely locked up and the Terminus should
not respond (either with locked-up or dark front panel).
11.4.1.2. CPU Status Indicator
The CPU board has two red LEDs, the lower of which is the watchdog timer (the device that pulses the
motherboard watchdog). This LED is labeled LED2 and blinks about twice per second (twice as fast as the
motherboard LED) when operating normally. LED1 above LED2 should always be on. However, both CPU
LEDs only indicate if the CPU is powered-up generally working. The lower LED can continue to blink even if
either the CPU or the firmware is locked up.
11.4.2. AC POWER CONFIGURATION
The TMS 9000 system’s digital electronic systems will operate with any of the specified power regimes. As long
as system is connected to 100-120 VAC or 220-240 VAC at either 50 or 60 Hz it will turn on and after about 30
seconds show a front panel display. Internally, the status LEDs located on the Relay PCA, Motherboard and
CPU should turn on as soon as the power is supplied.
On the other hand, some of the gas measurement modules’ non-digital components, such as various AC
powered heaters, must be properly configured for the type of power being supplied to the module. See the
operator’s manual for each module type for more information.
11.4.3. I2C BUS
If the display is locked up or if the Terminus is not booting up at all, the I2C bus may be the cause. Contact
customer service if you suspect a problem with the I2C bus.
11.4.4. KEYBOARD / DISPLAY INTERFACE
The front panel keyboard, the display and the keyboard/display circuit board can be verified by observing the
operation of the display when power is applied to the system and when a key is pressed on the front panel.
Assuming that there are no wiring problems and that the DC power supply is operating properly:
• The vacuum fluorescence display is working properly if, on power-up, a “-“ character is visible on the
upper left hand corner of the display.
• If there is no “-“ character on the display at power-up but the D1 LED on the relay board is flashing, the
keyboard/display circuit may be bad.
• If the system starts operation with a normal display but pressing a key on the front panel does not change
the display, then there are three possible problems:
• One or more of the keys is bad,

• The interrupt signal between the keyboard and the motherboard is broken or
• The keyboard circuit is bad.
You can verify this failure by logging on to the system using APICOM or a terminal program. If the system
responds to remote commands and the display changes accordingly, the display wiring or the I2C bus may be
faulty.
11.4.5. TERMINUS PCA
Several color-coded, light-emitting diodes (LED) are located on the Terminus PCA’s) that can be used to
determine if the Terminus’ CPU and I2C communications bus are functioning properly.

11.4.5.2. CPU Status Indicator

motherboard LED) when operating normally. LED1 above LED2 should always be on. However, both CPU

either the CPU or the firmware is locked up.
11.4.6. CPU PCA
There are two major types of CPU board failures, a complete failure and a failure associated with the Disk-OnChip (DOC). If either of these failures occur, contact the factory.
For complete failures, assuming that the power supplies are operating properly and the wiring is intact, the CPU
is faulty if on power-on:
• The vacuum fluorescence display does not show a dash in the upper left hand corner
• There is no activity from the primary COM2 even if “? <RETURN>” is pressed.
In some rare circumstances, this failure may be caused by a bad IC on the Terminus, specifically U57, the large,
44pin device on the lower right hand side of the board. If this is true, removing U57 from its socket will allow the
system to start up but the measurements will be incorrect.
• If the system stops during initialization (the vacuum fluorescence display shows some text), it is likely that
the DOC, the firmware or the configuration and data files have been corrupted or that the wrong firmware
was uploaded or does not have the correct filename.

11.4.7. RS-232 COMMUNICATION
11.4.7.1. General RS-232 Troubleshooting
The TMS 9000 system uses RS-232 protocol as the standard, serial communications protocol. RS-232 is a
versatile standard, which has been used for many years but, at times, is difficult to configure. Teledyne
Instruments conforms to the standard pin assignments in the implementation of RS-232. Problems with RS-232
connections usually center around 4 general areas:
• Incorrect cabling and connectors. This is the most common problem. See 3.3.2.1for connector and pinout information.
• The communications (baud) rate and protocol parameters are incorrectly configured. See Section 6.6.2.3
on how to set the baud rate.
• The COM port communications mode is set incorrectly (Section 6.6.2.2).
• If a modem is used, additional configuration and wiring rules must be observed. See Section 6.6.3.
• Note that some laptops do not enable their RS-232 port when in power-saving mode. In this case, to
start communicating with the system, connect the laptop and start either APICOM or a Hyperterminal
window. This will enable the serial port on the laptop and the green LED should illuminate. You may
have to switch back and forth while communicating to get the right setting.
11.4.7.2. Modem or Terminal Operation
These are the general steps for troubleshooting problems with a modem connected to the TMS 9000 system.
• Check cables for proper connection to the modem, terminal or computer.
• Check to make sure that the cable used to connect the modem properly converts DTE to DCE as
described in Section 6.6.3.
• Check the correct setup command (Section 6.6.3).
• Verify that the Ready to Send (RTS) signal is at logic high. The TMS 9000 system RTS to greater than 3
volts to enable modem transmission.
• Make sure the baud rate, word length, and stop bit settings between modem and system match, see
Section 6.6.2.
• Use the RS-232 test function to send “w” characters to the modem, terminal or computer; See Section
6.6.2.4.
• Make sure that the communications software is functioning properly.
11.5. TERMINUS AND CPU REPAIR PROCEDURES
11.5.1. DISK-ON-CHIP REPLACEMENT
1. Ground yourself to prevent electrostatic damage to electronic components.
2. Turn off power to the system.
3. Locate the Disk-on-Chip on the CPU board.
• The chip should carry a label with TMS 9000 system firmware revision, date the chip was
programmed and initials of the programmer.

4. Remove the IC with a dedicated IC removal tool or by gently prying it up from the socket.
• Do not bend the connector pins.
5. Reinstall the new Disk-on-Chip, making sure the notch at the end of the chip matches the notch in the
socket.
• It may be necessary to straighten the pins somewhat to fit them into the socket. Gently but firmly
press the chip all the way in. Do not bend the pins.
6. Turn on power to the machine.
Generally, all of the setup information (such as COM2 set up) will need to be re-entered.
11.5.2. FLASH CHIP REPLACEMENT OR UPGRADE
The Terminus CPU board can accommodate up to two EEPROM flash chips. The standard configuration is one
chip with 64 kb of storage capacity, which is used to store the system configuration (e.g., COM 2 port Setup).
Replacing this chip will erase that configuration
Adding a second EEPROM chip to the existing chip will double memory but this procedure will require a BIOS
configuration and is not a standard sales option. Also, make sure that you receive a fully formatted EEPROM
chip for replacement. Contact the factory for details.
1. Ground yourself to prevent electrostatic damage to electronic components.
2. Turn off power to the system.
3. Locate the EEPROM chip in the left-most socket of the CPU board.
4. The chip is almost square with one corner cut off, the socket is shaped accordingly and the chip is
recessed into the socket.
5. Remove the old chip by using a special tool or gently pry the chip out using a very fine screwdriver.
Make sure not to bend or destroy any of the contacts of the socket.
6. Reinstall the new or additional EEPROM chip, making sure the cut-off edge matches that of the socket.
Press the chip symmetrically and straight all the way in.

Teledyne Instruments considers the prevention of damage caused by the discharge of static electricity to be
extremely important part of making sure that your analyzer continues to provide reliable service for a long time.
This section describes how static electricity occurs, why it is so dangerous to electronic components and
assemblies as well as how to prevent that damage from occurring.
12.1. HOW STATIC CHARGES ARE CREATED
Modern electronic devices such as the types used in the various electronic assemblies of your analyzer, are very
small, require very little power and operate very quickly. Unfortunately, the same characteristics that allow them
to do these things also make them very susceptible to damage from the discharge of static electricity.
Controlling electrostatic discharge begins with understanding how electro-static charges occur in the first place.
Static electricity is the result of something called triboelectric charging which happens whenever the atoms of the
surface layers of two materials rub against each other. As the atoms of the two surfaces move together and
separate, some electrons from one surface are retained by the other.

Triboelectric Charging
If one of the surfaces is a poor conductor or even a good conductor that is not grounded, the resulting positive or
negative charge cannot bleed off and becomes trapped in place, or static. The most common example of
triboelectric charging happens when someone wearing leather or rubber soled shoes walks across a nylon
carpet or linoleum tiled floor. With each step, electrons change places and the resulting electro-static charge
builds up, quickly reaching significant levels. Pushing an epoxy printed circuit board across a workbench, using
a plastic handled screwdriver or even the constant jostling of StyrofoamTM pellets during shipment can also build
hefty static charges

12.2. HOW ELECTRO-STATIC CHARGES CAUSE DAMAGE
Damage to components occurs when these static charges come into contact with an electronic device. Current
flows as the charge moves along the conductive circuitry of the device and the typically very high voltage levels
of the charge overheat the delicate traces of the integrated circuits, melting them or even vaporizing parts of
them. When examined by microscope the damage caused by electro-static discharge looks a lot like tiny bomb
craters littered across the landscape of the component’s circuitry.
A quick comparison of the values in Table 12-1 with the those shown in the Table 12-2, listing device
susceptibility levels, shows why Semiconductor Reliability News estimates that approximately 60% of device
failures are the result of damage due to electro-static discharge.

Potentially damaging electro-static discharges can occur:
• Any time a charged surface (including the human body) discharges to a device. Even simple contact of a
finger to the leads of a sensitive device or assembly can allow enough discharge to cause damage. A
similar discharge can occur from a charged conductive object, such as a metallic tool or fixture.
• When static charges accumulated on a sensitive device discharges from the device to another surface
such as packaging materials, work surfaces, machine surfaces or other device. In some cases, charged
device discharges can be the most destructive.
A typical example of this is the simple act of installing an electronic assembly into the connector or
wiring harness of the equipment in which it is to function. If the assembly is carrying a static charge, as
it is connected to ground a discharge will occur.
• Whenever a sensitive device is moved into the field of an existing electro-static field, a charge may be
induced on the device in effect discharging the field onto the device. If the device is then momentarily
grounded while within the electrostatic field or removed from the region of the electrostatic field and
grounded somewhere else, a second discharge will occur as the charge is transferred from the device to
ground.

12.3. COMMON MYTHS ABOUT ESD DAMAGE
• I didn’t feel a shock so there was no electro-static discharge: The human nervous system isn’t able to
feel a static discharge of less than 3500 volts. Most devices are damaged by discharge levels much
lower than that.
• I didn’t touch it so there was no electro-static discharge: Electro Static charges are fields whose lines
of force can extend several inches or sometimes even feet away from the surface bearing the charge.
• It still works so there was no damage: Sometimes the damaged caused by electro-static discharge can
completely sever a circuit trace causing the device to fail immediately. More likely, the trace will be only
partially occluded by the damage causing degraded performance of the device or worse, weakening the
trace. This weakened circuit may seem to function fine for a short time, but even the very low voltage
and current levels of the device’s normal operating levels will eat away at the defect over time causing
the device to fail well before its designed lifetime is reached.
These latent failures are often the most costly since the failure of the equipment in which the damaged
device is installed causes down time, lost data, lost productivity, as well as possible failure and damage
to other pieces of equipment or property.
• Static Charges can’t build up on a conductive surface: There are two errors in this statement.
Conductive devices can build static charges if they are not grounded. The charge will be equalized
across the entire device, but without access to earth ground, they are still trapped and can still build to
high enough levels to cause damage when they are discharged.
A charge can be induced onto the conductive surface and/or discharge triggered in the presence of a
charged field such as a large static charge clinging to the surface of a nylon jacket of someone walking
up to a workbench.
• As long as my analyzer is properly installed, it is safe from damage caused by static discharges: It
is true that when properly installed the chassis ground of your analyzer is tied to earth ground and its
electronic components are prevented from building static electric charges themselves. This does not
prevent discharges from static fields built up on other things, like you and your clothing, from discharging
through the instrument and damaging it.
12.4. BASIC PRINCIPLES OF STATIC CONTROL
It is impossible to stop the creation of instantaneous static electric charges. It is not, however difficult to prevent
those charges from building to dangerous levels or prevent damage due to electro-static discharge from
occurring.
12.4.1. GENERAL RULES
Only handle or work on all electronic assemblies at a properly set up ESD station. Setting up an ESD safe
workstation need not be complicated. A protective mat properly tied to ground and a wrist strap are all that is
needed to create a basic anti-ESD workstation (see figure 12-2).

For technicians that work in the field, special lightweight and portable anti-ESD kits are available from most
suppliers of ESD protection gear. These include everything needed to create a temporary anti-ESD work area
anywhere.
• Always wear an Anti-ESD wrist strap when working on the electronic assemblies of your analyzer.
An anti-ESD wrist strap keeps the person wearing it at or near the same potential as other grounded
objects in the work area and allows static charges to dissipate before they can build to dangerous levels.
Anti-ESD wrist straps terminated with alligator clips are available for use in work areas where there is no
available grounded plug.
Also, anti-ESD wrist straps include a current limiting resistor (usually around one meg-ohm) that protects
you should you accidentally short yourself to the instrument’s power supply.
• Simply touching a grounded piece of metal is insufficient. While this may temporarily bleed off static
charges present at the time, once you stop touching the grounded metal new static charges will
immediately begin to re-build. In some conditions, a charge large enough to damage a component can
rebuild in just a few seconds.
• Always store sensitive components and assemblies in anti-ESD storage bags or bins: Even when
you are not working on them, store all devices and assemblies in a closed anti-Static bag or bin. This will
prevent induced charges from building up on the device or assembly and nearby static fields from
discharging through it.
• Use metallic anti-ESD bags for storing and shipping ESD sensitive components and assemblies
rather than pink-poly bags. The famous, pink-poly bags are made of a plastic that is impregnated with
a liquid (similar to liquid laundry detergent) which very slowly sweats onto the surface of the plastic
creating a slightly conductive layer over the surface of the bag.
While this layer may equalizes any charges that occur across the whole bag, it does not prevent the
build up of static charges. If laying on a conductive, grounded surface, these bags will allow charges to
bleed away but the very charges that build up on the surface of the bag itself can be transferred through
the bag by induction onto the circuits of your ESD sensitive device. Also, the liquid impregnating the
plastic is eventually used up after which the bag is as useless for preventing damage from ESD as any
ordinary plastic bag.
Anti-Static bags made of plastic impregnated with metal (usually silvery in color) provide all of the
charge equalizing abilities of the pink-poly bags but also, when properly sealed, create a Faraday cage
that completely isolates the contents from discharges and the inductive transfer of static charges.
Storage bins made of plastic impregnated with carbon (usually black in color) are also excellent at
dissipating static charges and isolating their contents from field effects and discharges.
• Never use ordinary plastic adhesive tape near an ESD sensitive device or to close an anti-ESD bag.
The act of pulling a piece of standard plastic adhesive tape, such as Scotch® tape, from its roll will
generate a static charge of several thousand or even tens of thousands of volts on the tape itself and an
associated field effect that can discharge through or be induced upon items up to a foot away.

12.4.2. BASIC ANTI-ESD PROCEDURES FOR ANALYZER REPAIR AND
MAINTENANCE
12.4.2.1. Working at the Instrument Rack
When working on the analyzer while it is in the instrument rack and plugged into a properly grounded power
supply
1. Attach you anti-ESD wrist strap to ground before doing anything else.
• Use a wrist strap terminated with an alligator clip and attach it to a bare metal portion of the
instrument chassis. This will safely connect you to the same ground level to which the instrument
and all of its components are connected.
2. Pause for a second or two to allow any static charges to bleed away.
3. Open the casing of the analyzer and begin work. Up to this point, the closed metal casing of your
analyzer has isolated the components and assemblies inside from any conducted or induced static
charges.
4. If you must remove a component from the instrument, do not lay it down on a non-ESD preventative
surface where static charges may lie in wait.
5. Only disconnect your wrist strap after you have finished work and closed the case of the analyzer.
12.4.2.2. Working at an Anti-ESD Work Bench.
When working on an instrument of an electronic assembly while it is resting on a anti-ESD work bench
1. Plug you anti-ESD wrist strap into the grounded receptacle of the work station before touching any items
on the work station and while standing at least a foot or so away. This will allow any charges you are
carrying to bleed away through the ground connection of the workstation and prevent discharges due to
field effects and induction from occurring.
2. Pause for a second or two to allow any static charges to bleed away.
3. Only open any anti-ESD storage bins or bags containing sensitive devices or assemblies after you have
plugged your wrist strap into the workstation.
• Lay the bag or bin on the workbench surface.
• Before opening the container, wait several seconds for any static charges on the outside surface of
the container to be bled away by the workstation’s grounded protective mat.
4. Do not pick up tools that may be carrying static charges while also touching or holding an ESD Sensitive
Device.
• Only lay tools or ESD-sensitive devices and assemblies on the conductive surface of your
workstation. Never lay them down on any non-ESD preventative surface.
5. Place any static sensitive devices or assemblies in anti-static storage bags or bins and close the bag or
bin before unplugging your wrist strap.
6. Disconnecting your wrist strap is always the last action taken before leaving the workbench.

12.4.2.3. Transferring Components from Rack to Bench and Back
When transferring a sensitive device from an installed Teledyne Instruments analyzer to an Anti-ESD workbench
or back:
1. Follow the instructions listed above for working at the instrument rack and workstation.
2. Never carry the component or assembly without placing it in an anti-ESD bag or bin.
3. Before using the bag or container allow any surface charges on it to dissipate:
• If you are at the instrument rack, hold the bag in one hand while your wrist strap is connected to a
ground point.
• If you are at an anti-ESD workbench, lay the container down on the conductive work surface.
• In either case wait several seconds.
4. Place the item in the container.
5. Seal the container. If using a bag, fold the end over and fastening it with anti-ESD tape.
• Folding the open end over isolates the component(s) inside from the effects of static fields.
• Leaving the bag open or simply stapling it shut without folding it closed prevents the bag from forming
a complete protective envelope around the device.
6. Once you have arrived at your destination, allow any surface charges that may have built up on the bag
or bin during travel to dissipate:
• Connect your wrist strap to ground.
• If you are at the instrument rack, hold the bag in one hand while your wrist strap is connected to a
ground point.
• If you are at a anti-ESD work bench, lay the container down on the conductive work surface
• In either case wait several seconds
7. Open the container.
12.4.2.4. Opening Shipments from Teledyne Instruments Customer Service.
Packing materials such as bubble pack and Styrofoam pellets are extremely efficient generators of static electric
charges. To prevent damage from ESD, Teledyne Instruments ships all electronic components and assemblies
in properly sealed ant-ESD containers.
Static charges will build up on the outer surface of the anti-ESD container during shipping as the packing
materials vibrate and rub against each other. To prevent these static charges from damaging the components or
assemblies being shipped make sure that you:
Always unpack shipments from Teledyne Instruments Customer Service by:
1. Opening the outer shipping box away from the anti-ESD work area
2. Carry the still sealed ant-ESD bag, tube or bin to the anti-ESD work area
3. Follow steps 6 and 7 of Section 12.4.2.3 above when opening the anti-ESD container at the work station
4. Reserve the anti-ESD container or bag to use when packing electronic components or assemblies to be
returned to Teledyne Instruments

Always pack electronic components and assemblies to be sent to Teledyne Instruments Customer Service in
anti-ESD bins, tubes or bags.
WARNING
• DO NOT use pink-poly bags.
• NEVER allow any standard plastic packaging materials to touch the
electronic component/assembly directly
• This includes, but is not limited to, plastic bubble-pack, Styrofoam
peanuts, open cell foam, closed cell foam, and adhesive tape
• DO NOT use standard adhesive tape as a sealer. Use ONLY anti-ESD
tape
1. Never carry the component or assembly without placing it in an anti-ESD bag or bin.
2. Before using the bag or container allow any surface charges on it to dissipate:
• If you are at the instrument rack, hold the bag in one hand while your wrist strap is connected to a
ground point.
• If you are at an anti-ESD workbench, lay the container down on the conductive work surface.
• In either case wait several seconds.
3. Place the item in the container.
4. Seal the container. If using a bag, fold the end over and fastening it with anti-ESD tape.
• Folding the open end over isolates the component(s) inside from the effects of static fields.
• Leaving the bag open or simply stapling it shut without folding it closed prevents the bag from forming
a complete protective envelope around the device.
NOTE
If you do not already have an adequate supply of anti-ESD bags or containers available,
Teledyne Instruments’ Customer Service department will supply them (see Section 11.6
for contact information).Follow the instructions listed above for working at the
instrument rack and workstation.
