Kitaj Prints
A Catalogue Raisonné
Jennifer Ramkalawon
n American-born
artist R.B. Kitaj (1932–2007) was one of the most controversial
artists of the second half of the twentieth century. His distinctive, highly personal
and often challenging works drew on many influences ranging from literature to
politics and film. The British Museum holds a near complete set of the artist’s
proofs, the best representation of the artist’s graphic works in the UK
n Kitaj
worked in England for almost forty years. It was in London that he had
developed his early style and influenced many of his friends, including David
Hockney, Lucian Freud and Frank Auerbach. This led Kitaj to coin the term ‘School of
London’, later associated with this group of purely figurative artists
n This
is the first publication to examine in detail Kitaj’s prints for almost twenty
years, featuring specially commissioned new photography of pieces spanning his
entire career – from his early prints of fragmented images and collages to his later
figurative works
n Published
to complement a major exhibition at the British Museum from 30 May to
1 September 2013
Jennifer Ramkalawon is a curator of prints and drawings at the British Museum,
where she has organized many print displays. She is a specialist in late nineteenth- and
twentieth-century art and culture, and is the author of Toulouse-Lautrec and Love and
Marriage.

Propaganda
Asian art of war and revolution
Mary Ginsberg
n In
revolutionary and wartime societies, propaganda is considered a vital part
of education and political participation. Propaganda encourages or condemns;
reinforces existing attitudes and behaviour; promotes social membership within
nation, class or work unit. Where political transformation had occurred before
widespread modernization and literacy, art was the most effective way to
communicate powerful messages
n Drawing
on the British Museum’s wide-ranging collections, this intriguing and
thought-provoking illustrated catalogue provides a fascinating contextual survey of
political art across Asia from 1900 to 1976, ending with the Cultural Revolution and
Mao’s death and the end of the Vietnam War
n Over
100 works of art from China, Japan, Vietnam, Korea, India and other countries
are represented, ranging from posters to prints, cartoons to calligraphy, textiles
to badges, to coins and medals, some published for the first time. Through these
powerful images, the author explores the themes of propaganda in daily life, heroes
and villains, the use of the past, symbolism, dissent and revolutionary inspirations
n Published
to complement an exhibition at the British Museum, opening May 2013
Mary Ginsberg is a guest curator at the British Museum, specialising in Chinese art.

A Little Gay History
Desire and Diversity across the World
Richard Parkinson
n How
old is the oldest chat-up line between men? Who was the first ‘lesbian’?
Were ancient Greek men who had sex together necessarily ‘gay’? And what did
Shakespeare think about cross-dressing?
Little Gay History takes objects ranging from Ancient Egyptian papyri and the
erotic scenes on the Roman Warren Cup to images by modern artists including
David Hockney and Bhupen Khakhar to consider questions such as these
n A
n Explores
the intimate issues behind forty artefacts from ancient times to the
present, and from cultures across the world, to ask a question that concerns us all:
how easily can we recognize love in history?
Richard Parkinson is internationally known as a specialist in Ancient Egyptian texts and
a curator of ancient Egyptian culture at the British Museum. His books for the British
Museum Press include Voices from Ancient Egypt, The Tomb-Chapel of Nebamun, and (for
children) Pocket Guide to Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs.

Masks
The Art of Expression
Edited by John Mack
n Beautiful,
elaborate, fierce, grotesque or elegant, masks are extraordinary objects that
demonstrate the creative skills and aesthetics of many different periods and cultures
n Masks
are a nearly universal phenomenon, but their uses and meanings are strikingly
different across cultures. In ritual and religious use, as today in Africa or Oceania,
mask-wearers may be thought to be possessed by – or even become – a spirit or a
god. In ancient Egypt, funerary masks were intended to equip the dead with divine
powers and attributes, while the masks used in Japanese Noh plays or in ancient
Greek drama helped to portray character
n In
this new edition of a classic book, eight leading experts explore the fascinating
stories, meanings and power of masks across ancient and modern civilizations
n Richly
illustrated with objects from the outstanding collection of the British
Museum and other important collections
John Mack is Professor of World Art Studies at the University of East Anglia and was
formerly Senior Keeper at the British Museum, where he remains an advisor for the
Museum’s Africa Programme. He is an internationally-recognized authority on the
arts and cultures of Africa and has published extensively on many subjects, taking a
broadly anthropological approach to art, material, culture and archaeology. His recent
publications include Preserving the Cultural Heritage of Africa: Crisis or Renaissance?
(James Currey Publications, 2008) and The Art of Small Things (The British Museum
Press, 2007).

created by people with minds as intelligent, imaginative and curious as our own.
Drawing together unique discoveries from across Europe for the first time (and
possibly the last as they are too fragile to travel again), this groundbreaking
exhibition will lift the time barrier to show how we are connected to these
artists from the last Ice Age – artistically, creatively and spiritually. It features
the world’s oldest examples of sculpture, portrait and ceramic art alongside
modern works influenced by the period.
Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to discover real contemporary
art, just 40,000 years old.
Tickets on sale from November 2012
There will be many free exhibitions and displays at the Museum in 2013, covering everything from
19th-century drawings of classical Greece to African textiles. To keep up to date, visit britishmuseum.org

journey to the heart of Islam
